LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Post operative treatment Dizzy spells, hot flashes, (palpatations but I get those anyway) I am on Atenolol I lost a lot of weight. I didn't gain weight. I lost my hips by three inches and two bra sizes ( cup size C to A ). However, that was almost four years ago. I was on the injection for almost 10 months. I have to do it again. The cysts are back and the Endo is acting up again. I am trying to find another optional treatment this medicine is extremely expensive without insurance. I am going to give this another try but more importantly I am not going to give in to this condition of Endo. It is all a metabolic condition and an auto immune disorder. Avoid red meat, caffine and chocolate on the treatment therapy. Walk as much as you can, meditate, pray and talk with others about your experiences. Lastly, READ, READ as much you can about your condition. Ask your Doctors every question you have for them and never settle for just one opinion. F 40 10 months

4  Endo- IBS- IC hot flashes, change in appetite, nausea I have had one shot after surgery to remove severe endo. I had my 1st shot on Monday. I experienced a brief hot flash and nausea for about an hour in the mornings. I am not sure if all is related to Lupron or not. I went from taking no pills to 16 a day since I got diagnosed with IBS and IC. I am on a schedule for 12 months worth of shots so I can hopefully get pregnant. So far the symtoms have not out weighed being pain free. I will continue this in hopes of it taking care of my problems. Please keep in mind that everyone is different!!! F 25 3 days

4  severe endometriosis pain in joints, headaches, mood swings, slight weight gain According to my OBGYN & Oncologist that performed a hysterectomy on me, I will be on Lupron for life. I was told by the Oncologist that I had the worst case of endometriosis that he's ever seen. The endometriosis cemented itself to my entire abdominal area & made a wall between my lower & uppper body. Doctor's are unable to remove it. I lost my right kidney due to this and was in severe pain (screaming at top of my lungs)before the surgery. I've been taking lupron shots for over 2 years now and I am completely pain free. I am very tired of taking the shots, but very thankful to God that I don't have to go through the pain that I had before. It was like hell on Earth. F 41 2 years

4  Endo. Hot flashes, decreased sex drive, moodiness, weight gain I personally loved this med. The first month was pretty rough, period was extremly heavy and painful. After second shot it got much better, I was finally pain free and period free for five wonderful months. The only bad thing was the sex drive went away and I guess I was very moody, hubby didn't like me very much and asked for divorce, but we worked through it. I didn't notice a difference in myself but he certainly did. F 30 6 months

4  Endometriosis depression resulting in a near nervous breakdown, joint pain, near-total loss of sexual appetite, weight gain, mental dullness, general tiredness I'm not sure how to rate it since I still have side effects- 2 1/2 months after supposed end of treatment still waiting on a period. After a lap to excise endo tissue and right ovary, doc strongly suggested lupron for my future fertility. I had 2 of the 3 month injections, took progest add-back, calcium supp's and vitamins, worked out 3 to 4 days a week and did yoga. 2 weeks after 1st injection I had the mega-period everyone has; but first 3 months were pretty much cake. But 2nd injection wreaked havoc. Became out of control depressed near breakdown and went on antidepressants for 3 months, tho' now off and better. Previously minor joint paint worsened, and I was very tired and mentally fuzzy, much ditzier than normal. Due to a schedule change at work I couldn't get to the gym more than 1 or 2 days a week but I kept doing yoga, which sortof helped. What's weird is being "off" it now for 2 1/2 months and I still have some symptoms worse than before. Going off progesterone a F 30 8 months

4  UTERINE FIBROIDS/ ABNORMAL BLEEDING Weight gain, extreme hot flashes, mood swings, aching joints, muscle spasms in legs and arms. Some dizziness. Lupron helped in a sense because when having uterine fibroids, you tend to have excessive bleeding. It completely stopped the bleeding and shrunk my fibroids some.If i have to take it again i will. It was a price to pay for relief. F 35 7 months

3  endometriosis hot flashes, night sweats, vaginitis, atopic dermatitis, mood swings, depression, anxiety, heart palpitations For me, this drug has been effective; the endometriosis tissue that was causing abdominal pain has been reduced and I haven't experienced any pain since starting the treatment. On the other hand, I stopped taking this drug after the fourth injection because of the psychological side effects I was experiencing. I don't have a history of mental illness but this drug was causing me to feel very sad and hopeless all the time. It's been a month since I stopped the treatment and I am still considering seeking psychiatrica care. Meanwhile, the night sweats continue and I have had to see a dermatologist for the atopic dermatitis to boot! If I had to take Lupron again, I would probably do it but I would definitely see a psychiatrist concurrently as a precaution. F 25 4 months

1  endometrosis Within the first month of treatment, I became gray in palor, listless, had daily migraines, developed a terrible full body folliculitis, and was barely able to walk across a room after the first week! The doctor insisted that this was a great drug, for me, IT RUINED MY LIFE!!! I would never take this for any reason again! I would rather die than live like that! CAVEAT EMPTOR F 44 90 days

2  large uterine fibroid-pidaua weight gain- 30lbs and 4 sizes worth. Extreme hot flashes, body aches, anxiety, sadness, conjunctivitis, flu like symptoms, feeling like I'm in a fog, swollen face and irritability. No sexual problems after the fact. N/A while taking Lupron as my husband was in Iraq. I can't say I wouldn't recommend Lupron as each person responds differently. In my case it did not shrink my fibroid and it has already grown into my uterine tissue and therefore was not removed as we still want to conceive. I stopped taking it in June 07 and only now are the effects starting to wane. It took 6wks to have a period, which was severe. I then had a period 45 days later and bled for 2 weeks. I have never bled that long in my life. My cycle is normal now and I have lost almost all of the weight but I still hurt. I have feelings of slight depression, again, something I am not used too. I get dizzy, sick to my stomach and feel out of sorts at times. Every day gets better and that is what I hold on to. I wouldn't take it again. F 37 3 months

4  Endo Hot flashes, night sweats, mood changes, body aches, tired, stomach problems, cant sleep, I will be getting my 4th shot next week.I have been pain free for 2 of the 3 months that I have been on this.Yes the side effects are not always nice but are manageable. I do see this is helping. I only had a few days of pain since I started this. Dont let other reviews scare you.Everyone is different and all things help others in different ways. If you want to try to get rid of your pain, its worth a try. F 27 3.5 months

4  Endometriosis - Stage VI Intensified menstrual pain, Hot flashes, Insomnia, Headaches I had my first shot on Nov 7. I didn't experience any side effects whatsoever until Nov 22, when I began my "cycle" eight days earlier than I had expected. The pain was debilitating for two solid days. I also began having hot flashes, headaches, and insomnia during that time. It hasn't even been a month since my first shot, but I'm seriously considering getting on the add-back therapy. If anyone has any advice about doing that, or not doing that, please email me. Even though I sound negative about Lupron, it can't be worse than what I've been going through before it, so I'm happy to have hope. F 30 2.5 weeks

2  Endometriosis (stage 2) Bone pain, extreme nausea, migraines, loss of appetite, hot flashes, increased abdominal pain I have stage 2 Endo and Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. Trying Lupron to buy time before needing a hysterectomy. I'm scheduled for 6 mos of Lupron & get my 2nd shot next wk. My symptoms so far: nausea, complete appetite loss, weight loss from not eating & vomiting, migraines are more frequent (but no more intense), continuous abdominal pain (800mg of Motrin & a heating pad help), hot and cold flashes (dressing in layers which are easy to remove and carrying a scarf and gloves help), and pain in my bones and joints (especially left forearm and lower back). I also cry a lot, mood swings haven't been too bad but depression has set in and I refuse antidepressants. Taking 5mg of Progesterone daily as an "add-back therapy" but don't know if it's helping. Doctors keep saying these are normal side effects and to stick with it as it'll get easier. Friends say it only gets worse the longer you're on it and it's only a temp fix for the pain (which eventually comes back). I'm tr F 24 3 weeks

3  Endo Hair loss, hotflashes, mood changes, joint pain I have been pain free for 2 months now. Getting ready to take my final 3 month injection. My only concern now is the hair loss. Has anyone else had hair loss and does it grow back? F 31 3 months

5  endo hot flashes, night sweats, weight loss (in fact my breasts disappeared almost entirely), mood swings and mild sleeplessness 6 years ago I was experiencing extreme endo pain, I had the diagnotic surgery and did 6 months of lupron. It was hard, the side effects were no fun. I believe I counteracted the weight gain by doing a lot of yoga through out the treatment. I was pain free for 6 years, until about 6 months ago and I am now considering doing another 6 month treatment. Honestly, the side effects are difficult and different for everyone, but for me the benefit of living pain free was worth it. F 32 6 months

5  Endometriosis The first month and a half, my symptoms actually got much worse, however, my Doctor had already discussed this with me, so it was expected. Hang in there!!! That is years of endometriosis breaking down, so it is supposed to be painful! I toughed it out and it was the best thing I could have done. About 6 weeks after my first shot, my pain was completely gone. I was getting really bad hot flashes, mood swings and night sweats, but they have diminished signifigantly in the past couple of weeks. The insomnia can be a bit difficutl, but nothing a non addicting sleep aid can't help. I was taking the ad-back therapy, but once I decided to try NOT taking, my hot flashes, night sweats and mood swings stopped. Overall, the end result is definitely worth the side aeffects for me. I am 26 years old and for the first time in 13 years, I am finally pain free and I have 2 shots left to go. After I am completed with my therapy, I will begin trying to conceive a child!  2  Endo, ovarian cysts Fatigue, mood swings, leg and muscle cramps, hot flashes, night sweats, memory loss, insomnia, short temper, water retention, weight gain(7 lbs in just 3 weeks!), headaches, cold like symptoms, stomach issues, bleeding, and the list goes on.... This is my second time taking it within a year with a laparoscopic surgery to remove endo cells in-between and to detach my ovary from my intestines. I do not feel like it is helping, but my doctor suggested it once again. I took the 3 month shot the first time and felt the side effects were much worse, but they are still coming on pretty strong the second time on the 1 month shot, and the symptoms started showing up with in about 7-10 days. I also had some allergic reaction on my eyelids to it. I have not decided if I will take the 2nd month shot yet. I am a competitive ice hockey player and these treatments really interfere with me being able to play my sport. F 35 3 weeks

4  Endo stage 2 Migraines, mood swings,no sex drive, insomnia, depression, vaginal dryness, muscle and joint pain, memory loss, night sweats. You know it wasn't bad at first. Actually the first month I only got headaches and hot at night. Everything else came in the second month. I go in for my third shot in less then a week. It hasn't been too bad. I believe it's doing more good then bad. And I want a baby bad enough to suffer a little while longer. For sure it has taken away a lot of the pain, and has slowed the bleeding down a lot! I would bleed for up to two months at a time. So it's been worth it to me. F 25 2 months

3  Heavy Bleeding/Pelvic Pain Nasty taste in my mouth. I had my first injection on 10/27/07. I'm only in my second week. My first period has come through... It is the same bleeding all over the place. Clotting more than usual. My doctor reported the 2nd period will be better.. We will see! F 34 11 days

3  Fibroids Hot flashes I took the 11.25 lupron shot on 9/14, started out okay, but did not help at all, my fibroid continued to grow and my hema was 5.2. I opted to proceed with surgery on 10/10. I continue to have the hot flashes due to the medication I'm not sure what my cycle will do for the month of November, but I can deal with that until my 3 months pass and I hope to conceive soon.  4  endo I have had mild symptoms.. I just had my 4rth shot. My lower back feels tight, but it is managable. Light headaches for the first 2 days after shot, bearable with ibuprofen. My doc told me what to expect ahead of time. It was my decision to take the shot. I have had no endo pain for 3 solid months. So far this has been worth the ride. F 39 4 months
