LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  IVF Down-regulating phase/stage. This is my 2nd cycle, so therefore, my 2nd injection of Prostap. 1st time around, just a bit moody. 2nd time around, fine for about a week, then severe migraine-style headaches, bit sad/miserable, which comes and goes. Can't seem to find any info on what pain relief is best to take. I've taking mefanamic acid and/or codeine, but seen conflicting info on the web about taking codeine. Any pain relief I've taken as not lasted very long. It's a good thing I'm on holiday from work this week, but what a way to spend my holiday. I thought I'd be gardening and seeing friends and family. Instead, I'm sat here in my bedroom typing, trying to lift my head up as it seems to weigh a ton! I suffered from migraines as a teenager and I can safely say this is very similar in strength of pain to my whole head. This drug is also used to stop periods whilst down-regulating on IVF before egg stimulation can proceed. Just strange how the first time around, I had no real side effects, or so I thought, but I have since learnt that it can cause cysts on the ovary and that is what I had the first time around on my 1st IVF cycle. AND I was in absolute agony with the large cyst as it was hard for me to walk. Additionally, my egg collection was stupidly painful and this was down to my cyst. The cyst was removed at the time of egg collection, but as with lesions, the pain remained with me for several days afterwards. This meant that my embryo transfer day was meant to be non-painful, but the evening of my embryo transfer I thought I was dying, maybe this is why my body rejected the embryos. The pain is traced back to the cyst, the cyst is traced back to the Lupron Depot/Prostap injection in my opinion. F 37 14 days

4  moderate/severe endo Those of menopause. NO PAIN. This drug causes menopause. Step 1: research menopause. It can be horrible for many women, and not so for others. I am on add-back (1 pill a day) as well as a 6 month treatment of Fluoxetine (20mg) for the depressive side effects (I have taken Fluoxetine with success before). For those of you that have had surgery that did not eradicate your endo, that was for a reason. It can attach itself to organs that doctors cannot risk lasering. Like kidneys, colon, stomach, and even lungs. The alternative to this treatment is an intensive hysterectomy after the endo has cemented your pelvis into a block. It is understandable that there might be some pain associated with your body's struggle to eradicate this unnecessary tissue during the Lupron treatment. However, I don't understand why someone wouldn't try, and I don't understand why others would recommend for someone not to try. And yes, clotting risks increase, just as with birth control. In fact last time I looked, many of these symptoms man F 24 4 months

5  Endometriosis None. I feel great! I used to have terrible stomach cramps, chest pains - they are gone! My energy level is through the roof. I used to have blood in my sputum. My gyno said it was due to my endometriosis. It is gone. The Lupron has helped me tremendously. The comments of hot flashes and fatigue I have read I am not experiencing. I don't know what I would do without this drug. It is a miracle for me. F 35 5 months

5  Endometriosis- stage 4 Typical menopausal symptoms- hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia After reading the comments on the site, I was more than scared to take Lupron. However, it was a saving grace to me. Before Lupron, I was in constant debilitiating pain, unable to work- or do much other than be perfectly still. I did have manageable hot flashes/night sweats, but they were nothing compared to the pain I was having previously. Lupron puts you into immediate menopause. This is what your body does on menopause. So if you are miserable, blame the menopause, not the Lupron. For some, the trade-off between menopause and whatever symptom they were having may not be worth it. For me, it definitely was.  4  Hydanitis, severe infections MRSA I had already started menapause. headach, night sweats, hot flashes, just started with anxiety and big time joint and back pain. My condition is different from everyone else that i have read, but the bottom line is I don't want my infections killing me if i am able to take this shot and stop the hormonal effects causing my infections. the side effects suck. I just need to hang in there for 6 months and then have my ovaries removed. My mother had ovarian cancer. Since having my injection 3 weeks ago, I have had no infections. F 43 3 weeks

1  endo /cyclic pain 13 months Nausea, weight gain, swelling hands, feet, severe fatigue, abdominal spasms, muscle spasms, severe leg cramps hand cramps , sleep problems....none of these symptoms prior to...athletic slim body frame and very physically active prior to... I was mostly worried about depression/headache side effects....I only got a bad migraine 2 weeks after my 1st shot(monthly shots)..however it lasted almost 6 days and I lost vision in one eye (when the estrogen took a dive bomb.) Between the 2nd and 3rd shot...it finally worked for my endo/cyclic pain which previously landed me in the hospital 5 times the year before! After my 3rd shot...muscle cramps and muscle pain quite severe....doctor said to try small amount of add back therapy should help so I agreed to the 4th shot. BIG MISTAKE!!!!I woke up the next morning with my hands, feet, face and lips swollen and every muscle and joint in my body hurt like#*#!! I couldn't move far for 4 days! Painful to walk, grasp, talk ( jaw muscles) after a few days calmed down a bit. Then severe muscle spasms...it has now been 5 weeks...still severe muscle spasms mostly in my back (injured when I fell down the stairs before xmas) the spasms have settled there mostly!!  4  Severe endo and ovarian cysts I have only been on the shot for about a month but I have experienced severe mood swings, hot flashes, restlessness, no energy, headaches, and night sweats. I am actually taking the hormone premerin to help with the side effects. It helps a little but I think something stronger would do the trick. The shot has helped me alot since I have been on it so I would rather be having the side effects than the pain. F 22 1 months

5  Endometreosis Lowered Libido, Hot Flashes, Tiredness, Increased Anxiety Spoke with my Dr. about side effects - she prescribed the Vivelle Dot 2.5 patch (change twice a week). Worked wonders. My GP prescribed anti-anxiety to help with the anxiety and tiredness. Both those meds made the world of difference. I have not known until this past year what "normal" feels like. I lived with pain so long, I thought that much pain was normal. I hope that I continue period/pain free since my last shot was in December. I guess I'll have to wait and see. I fought taking Lupron until I realized that I was ready to give up pain and periods. THANK GOD FOR LUPRON! F 47 12 months

2  Prostate cancer Hot Flashes, Joint pain, Neck pain, Tender & larger 'breasts' Perpetual tiredness + haven't put together >3 hrs sleep continuously in 1.5 yrs without chemical help. Libido=0, if the penis shrinks any further, I'll have to remove Mr in front of name. The original plan was 12 injections, coming up on 5 & I'd get off tomorrow except "does it make these 5 a waste of time etc?" I'll be asking next visit b/c if there is little difference. I get the shot in the butt, the 1st injection site on one side still hurts after >1 year. M 53 1.5 years

4  Endo Collapsing post-injection. Aches, HOT FLASHES, and moodiness I felt strong injecting myself. It made me feel that if I could inject myself, I could get over endo. I have been off the Lupron for 2 months now and I feel great. I still get little tiny cramps every day, but it's NOTHING compared to before. Good luck everyone, you can battle your obstacle-- I have faith in you. F 21 6 months

3  large fibroids no side effects I was on Lupron for 3 months to try and shrink my fibroids before a hysterectomy. My treatments are over and the injections did not shrink the fibroids at all. My doctor said if anything, they are bigger. My hysterectomy is in two weeks. Don't be afaid to try the injections, just don't get your hopes too high. I feel like I wasted 3 months, but you have no way of knowing, so it's worth the try I suppose? F 42 3 months

4  Prostate Cancer Slight anemia, probable aggravation of conditions either already existing or oncoming: high blood sugar, low energy, restlessness, lack of libido, increasing irritability, decreasing body hair, skin reverting to baby-like smoothness. Works for me: TRUS and biopsy showed cancerous or precancerous cells throughout 2/3 of prostate that was 11 times normal size; PSA 6.8, Gleason 7. After two 3-month Lurpon injections and one month on Casodex, prostate was half as large but still twice operable size; PSA <.4. Main gripe is damn surgeon didn't speak one word to possible side effects; just a faint smile when I bring yet another symptom to his attention. Started out with a few strikes against me anyway: bi-polar with panic-anxiety disorder and hugely overweight, heavy drinker for years. Meds, age and bad habits have brought on adult-onset diabetes which I am now sure is aggravated by Lupron. Before all this, however, am sure I underwent "male menopause" at precisely age 40: loss of energy and interest in formerly enjoyable pursuits including sex, raging night sweats for several years with highly disrupted sleep. Got past all that, so Lupron had noplace to go except straight to now-shrunken gonads and prost M 61 17 months

4  large fibroid I have had 3 injections (3 month span) and I can honestly say I have had no major issues with this drug. My doctor wants to decrease the size of my fibroid before my hysterectomy to make surgery easier. Do not be afraid to take these injections. I went into it with an open mind and the trade-off of having a few hot flashes far outweighs the heavy periods anyday in my book. ;) F 41 3 months

1  Endo Weight gain, hot flashes, nausea, additional migraines, joint pain, fatigue, moody I was on Lupron for a year. It was fantastic being pain free, however, the side effects were not worth it. I have not been myself for the past year. My last shot is exiting my system and I am not sure if the pain is going to be back or not. I am worried about the long-term effects that this drug is going to have on my body. The side effects have been horrible and I refuse to ever take this drug again. F 24 1 years

4  Fibroid No side effects to report I received a 3 month lupron injection on 10/19/07. I took lupron to shrink a fibroid. I had an abdominal myomectomy on 12/20/07. The lupron shrunk my fibroid by 30%. I really cannot report having a negative time with lupron. I didn't experience weight gain, didn't notice a decrease in my sex drive whatsoever. I actually lost weight during the time I have been on lupron. I stayed active and worked out. I suffered from migraines prior to taking lupron and didn't experience any more headaches than usual. As a matter of fact, I had less b/c my period often brings on a migraine. Overall I am satisfied with my treatment as it did exactly what my dr said it would do and after I recover from my surgery my husband and I can look towards starting a family. Right now I am on just looking forward to my period coming back. It is important to educate yourself before taking any medicine. Also, it is important to note that you will rarely run across websites praising any particular dr F 30 12 weeks

1  endometriosis Started Lupron after a Laproscopy surgery for a total of 3 months, had typical side effects of hot flashes and loosing a lot of hair, but 1 month after my last shot my body went into extreme pain with muscles in arms and legs. Felt like I was giving birth out of my toes and arms, sleeping only a couple of hours a night, became very depressed due to the pain with a handful of doctors with no answers. This was in 2001, it is now 2008 and I have been through a long list of medication, therapy and now am entering an elimination diet to help with the pain. I have quit my job this week as the pain is so debilitating it consumes your thoughts and emotions. The only common element is the timing of this drug and the pain that started. Fibromyalgia is the only diagnosis any doctor has ever come up with. I was so healthy and happy before taking Lupron, running 10K's, hiking and full of energy. Today I am laying bed writing this, tried to find some relief. PLEASE do your research, you may g DON"T TAKE IT.... F 37 90 days

3  pre-surgery for fibroids Never experienced a hot flash, so not sure if I'm getting them. I do get 'warm' every so often, but not to the extreme. I get headaches, but always did have menstrual migraines before, so that's nothing new either. I'm taking Norathindrone with these shots so maybe that's doing it's job?? I'm taking Lupron to prepare for a laproscopic hysterectomy. I've had a Fibroid Embolization done, which did nothing. I've had heavy periods for eight years! My doctor warned me that after the first shot of Lupron, my bleeding may get worse for a while. Her words... "it may kick it up a notch." After my first shot on 11/20/07 I had a cessation for a while. Then I got my period again on 12/9/07. I still had it when I went for my second shot (11.25 mg)on 12/17, and my bleeding raged on for another 10 days! It stopped for about 7 days and it just started again! I just hope the Lupron's doing its job, because I was already chronically anemic - I don't see how having my period every few days will help anemia. And I'm taking a slow release iron pill on top of everything else! I'm praying the Lupron is at least shrinking the fibroids as I don't want to resort to a conventional hysterectomy! I rated this a 3, but I'm not sure if I can say it's working. I'm still five or so we F 54 48 days
