LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis Hot flashes, headaches, fatigue, break outs I started taking lupron about 2 months ago. The sytoms are no were as bad as I thought they were going to be! I kept refusing to get the shot just because I was so scared of the symptoms until my last surgery. I've had two surreys in the last 7 months, so I figured it was time to do something cause I want to be able to have kids. But, the worse part is the hot flashes. At first it wasn't bad and now I have them like every day and all night long sometimes. And my face is starting to break out cause I think the medicine is starting to kick in, but it really does make the pain go away. I would rather deal with the symptoms then the pain any day .  1  Endometriosis All the common "temporary" side effects of menopause; plus some I was only life-threatening allergic reaction the year following treatment. My autoimmune system went wacky. Heart issues, nerve damage, I began passing out from hypothyroidism. Years later I was dx; with a thyroid goiter.and a brain aneurysm.Too many other Dx to list. Please do not use Leuprolide Acete / Lupron Depot! You may not get to live long enough to regrete it. They "Lied by Omission" Left out important information like it is an ".Antineplastic that kills "Healthy Cells as well as Cancerous Cells". They also said all side-effects are temporary. LIE!, LIE!, LIE, I was only 32. Why has the FDA not restricted this drug for Cancer patients only??? Another Thing For President Trump to Make Right... F 54 6 months

3  Endometriosis Skin became very oily, hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, mood swings, brain fog, eyes produced more oil in which I had to switch to daily contacts I was diagnosed with endometrioses in July 2016. My options were either getting a hysterectomy or being put on Lupron for 6-12 months. I opted for Lupron. I stopped bleeding altogether. The first month of being on Lupron increased my endometriosis pain severely. I had bad cramps/pain for the entire month. By month 2 the menopause symptoms kicked in. I was put on anti-depressants to help with the mood swings. I have gained about 15lbs while on Lupron. I do cramp while on Lupron, but it's no where near the pain I had before getting on it. It has completely stop my bleeding and definitely reduced the cramping and pain. I went from wearing 2 week wear contacts to having to wear daily contacts, because the oil my eyes produce makes my contacts blurry daily. My optometrist told me some women in menopause have this issue. I just had my 6 month apt to determine whether or not to extend it to 12 months. I have decided to get off and start a continual BC in hopes the bleeding will stay at bay. I was told if I start bleeding, my options again will be Lupron or hysterectomy. All in all, this medicine does help. But, for me, it gave me some pretty ugly side affects. I'm hoping I will not have to go back on it. I wouldn't discourage anyone from being on it, while this may be a last option before surgery. But, if you do consider starting this medicine, I recommend doing your research and just be aware/prepared for the possible side effects that may come with it for you. F 30 6 months

4  Endometriosis/adenomyosis Joint/muscle pain and weakness. Awful hot flashes, multiple times per hour. Sleepless nights from insomnia and constant hot flashes/night sweats. About to go on climara patch to hopefully counteract. Love not having pain, but would love to go 15 minutes without getting soaked in sweat! :(. Bled for two weeks, approximately 2 weeks after the injection. Taking for pain, also to increase success of IVF. F 37 3 months

1  Endometriosis Night sweats, severe cramping in ovaries, nausea, neck and back pain After coming off depo provera, I had the worst period of my life. Going on 6 weeks now (still heavy bleeding & severe uncontrollable pain), & I've been on lupron for about 2 weeks to shut down everything. So far, it's been a nightmare... My pain is SO bad, even 10mg of percocet with 800mg of ibuprofen doesn't touch it. Hoping it will get better, because I can't take much more of this crap. F 24 1 months

3  Uterine fibroids The day I received shot I had hot flashes and chills and my arse was sore and burning for a week,4 weeks later I still have hot flashes and chills. I've also been spotting since getting shot. One week later I felt like I had the flu, my whole body hurt and had burning sensation in muscles and in kidney area also very tired.I also experienced burning sensation in both nipples, it felt like someone took sandpaper over my nipples.4 weeks later my bones still kinda ache, I'm still spotting and I also have vaginal dryness, lack of sex drive. I also see things in peripheral vision. Didn't have that before. Also some forgetfulness.I also get weird shooting pain sensation in head. My mood after shot, little things would set me off. Kinda feel emotional at times. I don't like the side effects but it did shrink my fibroid and will soon have surgery to remove it and then hopefully this nightmare will be over and my periods will be normal and not Niagara falls. I had one injection and I'm not sure I would get the second one if it was prescribed but I'm sensitive when it comes to medication. The side effects are manageable and they come and go. There are a lot of horror stories on internet and I was scared to death to take this drug but I would take the shot again because it did shrink my 2.5 cm submucous fibroid to 1.8 I'm hoping my body will be back to normal soon but after surgery I'm gonna be on estrogen and progesterone for a month. I hate medicine. F 40 1 months

1  Fibroids I've had severe body aches. Constant nausea and vomiting. I had a 3 month dose in May. The hot flashes have been awful. I seem to be having more symptoms in the 3rd month. The upside, the bleeding stopped. But the side effects are unbearable. I will never take the shot again and I don't recommend it. F 41 3 months

3  Endometriosis Night sweats, nightmares, hair thinning, mood swings, anger and extreme sadness, nausea This drug reduced my pelvic pain to a functional level while I awaited a hysterectomy; but the side effects at the beginning were simply horrible; I persevered and most went away after the 2nd month. 1st month- almost a complete emotional breakdown (crying in the shower and I am NOT like that normally)- night sweats/terrors, nausea, hair thinning all over the scalp, hot flashes, sleeplessness, irritation and anger. 2nd month on- feeling of being "frozen" in the pelvic area- almost like stone. I have only used it the one 3 month time period. F 37 3 months

4  Fibroids Night sweats, hot flashes, minor spotting no mood swings, depression or confusion. I am also eating correctly, avoiding estrogen producing or heavy foods (edamame, soy sauce, non grass fed meats, etc.) I am also taking herbals to combat monopausal symptoms and to cleanse my liver and system of excess estrogen. Vitex, licorice root, milk thistle, etc. I am also taken the progesterone only birth control to minimize symptoms. You cannot just take the shot and continue to eat and live the same. Your body is not functioning properly due to a hormone imbalance. Work to get you body in alignment while you have a temporary " catchup period" afforded by lupron. After your done with Lupron you should go through an entire body fast and cleanse to get this drug out of your body. Do not take it lightly that this is a cancer drug! Stop relying on the FDA to cure your symptoms instead leverage drugs while YOU cure your body! I am also following the eating suggestions for the ovarian body type (YouTube) by Dr Berg, working out, and reducing my alcohol intake. F 39 1 months

2  To prevent Breast cancer recurrence Crying spells, fatigue, muscle and joint pain, vaginal itching, decreased interest in sex, mood swings (depression, irritability, anxiety), hot flashes. The side effects of this medication can be extremely difficult, and the mood swings and crying spells can be a complete nightmare. The excellent news is that I have not had a recurrence. I have needed to strengthen my support system, so that I am attending various support groups so that I can weather the mood swings (depression, irritability, anxiety, crying spells). F 51 1 years

1  tiny fibroid I had heavy periods but only a tiny fibroid on the OUTSIDE of my uterus. I had a failed balloon ablation, then they moved to 3 shots of Lupron, that over shrunk my uterus. I ended up having Hashimotos thyroiditis, so I was misdiagnosed. The worst HOT FLASHES x 100 for 6 months, jittery, moody, hormonal rage, over shrunk uterus has remained, 10 years later. I cannot get a pap smear anymore. It shrunk up like a prune. I was told if I start to bleed, even a drop, they will remove my uterus. DO THYROID TESTING. Ruining my uterus was unnecessary, and now I am at a higher risk of uterine cancer! I ended up demanding they TSH TEST! Two OBGYN's missed this completely. One was a specialist. It is a cancer medication and I do not think it should be used for fibroids. (mine was tiny and it was on the outside of my uterus) Being thrown into early menopause because I had Hashimotos, was beyond deviating in the standard of care. Blood tests are not as invasive as balloon oblation and (3) shots of LUPRON. MY OBGYN cannot preform a pap smear on me ANYMORE. She said "it is like cobwebs inside. The walls are all stuck together". Not a cure for Hashimotos thyroiditis by any means! F 55 3 weeks

4  Severe Endometriosis Hot flashes, weight gain, fatigue I am nervous about the long-term effects that I have heard about with this drug. However, my side effects have been very manageable (though the weight gain is a bit maddening) in comparison to the pain I was in with my endo. I had surgery and was hospitalized with a post-op infection two weeks after my surgery, but other than that, it has worked very well for me. Everyone needs to remember that medications affect everyone differently, so don't dismiss something simply because others have had a bad reaction. I was TERRIFIED to start this shot because I don't have the best health, but I'm glad I did. I just need to try and remain positive about my future now. Best of luck! F 26 1.5 years

5  fibroids None so far. I did have minor muscle ache in my upper left arm but it was nothing serious. No hot flashes, mood swings and etc. I am taking the add back though. Took it the first day I got the shot. So I hope that's what's controlling menopausal symptoms because I feel great. Due to my large fibroids I am taking lupron + add back to hopefully help shrink my fibroids. I couldn't wait to get my first shot due to my heavy bleeding. I take the 1x a month. Dr wants me on for 6 mos max. May be less if fibroids shrink enough for myomectomy. Period did come first month, and 2nd shot did come next day but was only spotting. Just got the 2nd shot around 2wks ago. Dr said its normal due to body has to get used to it. I am very happy so far. Don't feed into all the negative feedback. We are all different and I wish you the best. F 40 2 months
