LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Edno, bleeding after sex, cramps 6 weeks into treatment. weight loss, headaches, first 2 weeks very painful, felt like my uterus turned into rocks. First month period lasted 10 days. Mild hot flashes, trouble sleeping and anxiety. So far I am very happy and hope that it continues. Dr. has given me add back but I haven't started it yet. I am afraid it will hinder my results. Had endo surgery 6 months prior to starting injections. That surgery made everything worse. Last ditch effort to save my uterus. F 36 6 weeks

4  Endometriosis I had hot flashes after the second injection that continued until about four weeks after my final (sixth) injection, also weight gain of about 5 pounds per month. 3.75 Lupron Depot was a life saver in my book. I can always go to the gym and lose the weight I gained but the pain it stopped I couldn't do that on my own. I still don't have my period back yet and it's been to months now, but I can live with that. F 34 6 months

4  Endometriosis Bad hot flashes, headache, nausea, mood swings, crying spells I just received my second shot on Tuesday. The doctor told me that I should not have anymore pain after my third shot. He gave me add back therapy for the hot flashes and other side effects but I have only taken them for three days. So far I haven't seen any change. Does anyone know how long it takes for them to start working? F 27 2 months

1  stage 3 endometroisis I went into allergic reactions 10 minutes after my first injections. MY lips and tongue start to swell and my throat started to feel tight. I spent 3 hour in the ER on IV's. Steriods and saline. I followed up with 6 pays of steriods. It is now day 12, I take claritin and Benadryl 24 hours a day to keep the swelling down in my mouth and lips. I slur when I talk and I loose my train of thought. My muscles are killing me. It hurts to walk and at times my arms ache too. No one can tell me how long this is going to last. F 39 14 days

3  severe endo hot flashes, acne, headaches, nausea, tired and weak, backache, depression, overwhelmed, constipation, painful urination, mood swings, memory loss, return of acid reflux, head feeling foggy, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, I never had any diet changes, didn't eat no more or no less, female organs ached unlike I ever experienced before By this time who cares about having a sex drive--This is my 2nd posting My side effects were just as bad as when I started out with the severe endo and a cyst that took over my left ovary and tube. I started out going to the dr. in Feb. 04 hoping to get help and treatment. By March 04 I had my first surgery in which I had the cyst, ovary, tube and what endo the Dr. gould get without damaging my organs, which were stuck together. I started my 1st treatment of lupron that March. As I said before my 1st 3-4 months I felt better than I had in years, side effects mostly hot flashes and some nausea. Within 5 months I developed all side effects listed. I had a 2nd surgery in Oct. 04 in which the dr. was able to remove all endo which I can say the shot done its job and shrunk all the endo that had my organs attached. Praise God! My last treatment on lupron was April 05. It took 4months for me to have a period. 6 months to loose the 1st lb. gained from shot which slowly but surely is coming off with regular exercise and trying to eat right.  5  Endometrosis, bilateral cysts hot flashes, weight gain This is the 2nd time I've had Lupron. 10 years ago it helped me get pregnant following laproscopy. This time I had horrible abdominal pain - discovered large cysts with debris on both ovaries. After 2 shots, both my pain and cysts are gone. WELL WORTH IT. F 42 2 months

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, Mood Swings, Weight fluctuation, anxiety, night sweats, insomnia, confusion, anger, urinary retention, dry mouth, acne, oily skin, rapid aged skin, bone density loss, low immune system. It would take me a million words to explain everything that happened to me on Lupron Depot! But.. Ill just stick with the worst. First of all I am 20 years old and going through menopause is NOT the right thing to do to treat the disease. I took lupron POST laproscopic surgery. I gained 20 lbs the first 2 weeks (and normally I only way around 100 at 5'4"). Then I lost 30 lbs 3 weeks later. The mood swings got so out of control I would have to lock myself in a room to keep from hurting someone. I was put on a natural hormone replacement as well as Valuum and Wellbutrin.. NOTHING HELPED! I couldnt sleep so I was put on sleeping pills(lunesta 2mg). I had NO energy, Battled acne for the FIRST TIME in my life and never stopped sweating.. BUT.. this is where the worst of it comes... I am the first case on record with lupron that the medication SHUT DOWN MY BLADDER. I am not talking just couldnt pee for awhile. MY BLADDER IS DEAD!! I have been self cathing every 4 hours for 3 months ( F 20 9 months

4  Endometriosis, ovarian cysts Acne, Hot Flashes, Night sweats, Mood swings, weight loss, loss of appetite, decreased libido. I have had 2 shots and immediately got acne after the first shot that hasn't cleared up yet. I also have several hot flashes a day and night sweats. I have no abdominal pain anymore or sharp stabbing pains/cramps like I had so I am very thankful for that but I am very self conscious about my acne. F 28 2 months

3  breast cancer related therapy Hot flashes are bad but not horrible. The worst is migraines. I already have a 15 year history of migraines, which I manage successfully through diet and drug therapy. But now, I wake up every morning with a migraine. I wake up between 2:00 and 3:00 am and cannot go back to sleep after taking imitrex. I need to stay up for at least 2 hours...cannot lie down because that is what causes the headache. My hours are all messed up and I feel exhausted much of the time. I have to give it a 3 since I don't know how effective lupron will be in the long run. I am taking this drug to promote onset of menopause so I can take arimidex for breast cancer. Tamoxifen did not work for me as I had a recurrance of DCIS in 2 years. So since I still have periods I need to take lupron to stop them. Arimidex is not effective in pre-menopausal cases. I took a 1 month dose of lupron to test it out. Late in the month side effects began. Now I am on the 3rd month of my 3 month injection. Side effects are the same and I don't know if it is worth continuing unless I can get some relief. I am supposed to be on lupron for 5 years. So I suffer the side effects or risk breast cancer. F 49 4 months

1  Endometriosis I am currently 45. I had endometriosis, family history of ovarian cancer, personal history of multiple cysts and took Lupron when I was about 30. I had approximately 3 injections and consequently had a 5cm ovarian cyst that grew and ruptured. Along with the short-term side effects of Lupron were overall body aches/pain, rash/bumps and sickness. Unfortunately as I discovered later that was not reported to me was the chance of bone loss of over 20% which is exactly what I ended up with within a few years. The only other health problems that I have been diagnosed with over the years are Type 2 Diabetes and Osteoporosis/Osteopenia with bone loss of approximately 30%. I have been doing weight bearing exercises and taking estrace which has improved my bone loss. Overall I would not recommend Lupron for anyone with the side effects that I have described. I had a lot more effects initially that lasted for a long time then I have reported. If the Lupron had worked for the endometriosis F 45 3 months

5  endometriosis mood swings, minimal hot flashes, weight loss, trouble with memory, breast tenderness (first two weeks only) I have been really lucky and have not had a lot of the side effects that most women get. Probably the worst side effect for me are the mood swings. One second I am fine and happy, and the next I am so mad and agitated! My doctor put me on add-back therapy, which I think has helped a lot. I have only had a few hot flashes, and they haven't even been that intense. I was terrified that I was going to gain a lot of weight, but since starting on the Lupron I have actually lost weight. I never had constant pain from the endo, so I don't know what it's like for other women who have, but I had two episodes of excruciating pain, and I am just glad to know that I won't be having that pain again. I am going in for my 3rd shot in about a week. F 18 2 months

5  endometriosis nausea, fatigue, weight loss, night sweats These first few weeks I have had little appetite, nausea, and fatigue. Eight pounds lost since first day. The cramping and pain got worse but is now subsiding, but I keep spotting every few days. I am having mild hot flashes and some night sweats, and some days very moody. All of it is worth it though if it will keep the pain away. F 28 3 weeks

5  Endometriosis, constant periods Hot flashes, nausea Immediately after taking the first shot, I got really sick and was in the hospital. I was vomitting for a week straight and could barely get out of bed because of the pain. After about 2 weeks, I was a whole new person. The pain went away and I was able to exercise for the first time in years without terrible pain. I also had endo in my colon, and have had diarrhea my entire life. The shot also put an end to that. Hold on for the first two weeks, and everything will get better! You feel like you are going to die at first, but it's worth every bit in the long run. Don't be afraid of all the terrible comments.
