LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Lg Fibroid, Endo Hot flashes, night sweats, some irritability Side effects didn't really kick in until the 2nd month, and they have been a little bit of an inconvenience, but not too bad overall. Loved not having a period this month. Fibroid has shrunk from 8.5 cm to 6.5 cm and I'm waiting for surgery at the end of this month. I would have to say the benefits of these shots have far out-weighed the negative side effects. F 35 2 months

5   hot flashes and bleeding in 1st month, insomnia in 3rd month only, weight gain, acne I would take these and more side effects again for the pain relief Lupron has brought. I could not believe how much better I felt after the 2nd month-even mentally! I don't think I had acknowledged how much pain I was in before. I am hoping that some weight will come off once I'm off Lupron, but I worry more about how I'll feel off of it-I almost wish I could stay on it. F 26 5 months

1  endometriosis Severe hot flashes, night sweats, mental instability, depression, anxiety, mood swings, joint pain (mostly in my shoulders), migraines, I was better off with the pain from endo. Not being able to control my emotions, and them flying off to polar opposites, was more than enough to handle and destroyed many, many relationships I had. I'm now trying to get my life back together. It's not easy. F 20 6 months

2  endometriosis hot flashes, memory loss never had a period while on drug, it just didn't help with my pain all that much. my new doctor seems to think that was because i already had depo provera in my system and did not have time to clear that out before i was put on lupron. i will be having another lap within the next month and then following with lupron again so it wasn't too bad. just didn't work for me last time.  5  endometrisis The only side effects that I have had are night sweats and hot flashes I loved having these shots. I had the 2 shots every 3 months. The first day of my first treatment my period stopped. I haven't had any pain since. I've finished with my treatment, and still pain free. I would rather deal with the night sweats and hot flashes than the pain that I went through with the endo. If the pain comes back like it did, I will most defintley go through another set of shots.  3  Endometriosis I have been on Lupron for 3 months now. Having hot flashes, and chills, Major mood swings, exhaustion, irritability, at time of periods still having bad cramps and lower back pain, night sweats, absoultly no sex drive, vaginal dryness, itchy dry skin, memory loss, joint pain, and some depression and still have 7 more months to go... A question for anyone who can answer is it absoultly nessasary for you to see the Dr. when taking this shot and why? My husband just recently got out of the service and I was able to get the shots I needed and we dont have insurance. But if it's absoutly necessary will.. Does the Dr. check your Estrogen levels? Any info would be great.. F 25 3 days

5  Endometriosis Hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, exhaustion This is the first time I've ever taken the 6 month, once a month Lupron. After the first shot the pain caused by endo subsided, and after three shots my period stopped all together. It was great, no monthly visitor and I was truly pain free! Yes there are hot flashes, and I thought I was gonna fry brain cells I got so hot. I started acting as crazy as my mom. But I'm finally off the shots and I can already tell a difference. The pain is slowly coming back and I already want to start a second round. I know I can't yet, but that's how much of a difference these nearly painless shots are. I'd much rather be hot and a little exhausted than doubled over in pain and can hardly roll over in bed. Lupron depot is my savior from pain killers, which I'm thinking will have to tide me over till I can start the lupron again! And please e-mail me if you'd like to talk bc I would love to...  1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, insomnia, severe mood swings, hair loss, weight gain, loss of bone density I thought that the Lupron was one of the worst drugs I've ever taken for my endometriosis. I was diagnosed when I was 15 and started Lupron shortly there after. I am now 19 and since taking Lupron have been on Depot Provera,Lo/ovral, and now Ovcon 35 because the Lupron didn't help the pain. Within 2 months of finishing the treatment I was put on Depot Provera, and I don't have health insurance so that was a lot of money for something that only made me a crazy bitch for six months. My symptoms didn't even get better. Depot provera helped me more than Lupron. And the side effects were unbearable, not to mention they were on top of puberty, but my parents would hardly talk to me and I really didn't have very many friends at school. I would never recommend this druge to anyone. In fact my doctor tried to put me on it again to see if the second time around would work better and I refused. F 19 6 months

4  one shot prior to surgery hot flashes, weight gain, diminished sexual desire, unable to sleep, My doctor said this would minimize my chances of bleeding, stop periods, set my uterus in a better way for him to perform laproscopic surgery for its removal. I had one shot in May 05 and surgery was done Aug 05. when does this shot wear-off? Still having hot flashes which disrupt my sleep. They prescribed Premarin and when I read all the side effects it has I didn't take. This was a preview of what true menopause is going to be like-what a nightmare time for a woman. I just want to get back to feeling as i did before the shot which was actually really great accept for having a period every other week that last for 5-6 days. I had fybroids but not painful yet. Anyone know when the side effects will go away? F 48 0 days

2  Endometrois I felt awlful on this medicine, Hot Flashes,Joint Pains and aches. Weigth Gain +25lbs. Extremelly tired all the time, No energy. This Medicine has slightly taken away my pelvic pain due to endo. It has not helped my extreme Back Pain. Hello I am a female and I am 33 years old. I have been battleing the very painful dieases "ENDOMETROIS" For over 10 years. I have a ten month old son and while I was pregnant the pain pretty much disappeared except for a few bad days. After having my son the pain can back so strong accompied by heavy cramping and heavy bleeding. I didn't know what to do I was at my wits end. The doctor recommened Lupron Depot 3.75mg. So I tried it, The shots would bother me for 2 weeks the area would swell up so bad and be untouchable...I wouldn't have minded it but this drug didn't really do anything but give me more problems and the pain from endo. continued!! So I have taken it for 5 months and after the 3rd month I started having my period which gave me alwful pain I talked to the doctor he said the bleeding should stop, but it did not. I stopped taking this drug and I am very disappointed... my next step is to try to concieve...once accomplished I will have my baby and then most likely h F 33 5 days

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, and many others. I took the shot for 6 months. I got off in January of 2004 and have yet to have a period on my own since. My husband and I cannot have children because I do not have periods and I cannot afford the medicine to take every month to have a period then to try to conceive. F 18 6 days

5  Endo Hot flashes/sweating, fatigue, irritability, mood swings, weight loss, exhaustion I have two months to go on this, and although it's not as bad as I had thought it would be, I can't wait to be off of it. I just hope that the pain doesn't come back. It has made my life better because I'm not suffering with extreme pain three weeks out of the month, but I'm exhausted all the time, and I have dark circles under my eyes that won't go away. I honestly would do this therapy again down the road, but it makes for a rough time. The hot flashes and sweating aren't so bad---being exhausted all the time is the hardest. I started losing weight and have been eating junk food to try to fatten myself up. The nurse told me I should be exercising, but I'm so tired all the time, my joints ache, and I don't want to lose any more weight! My first surgery wasn't succesful due to the severity and build-up of the tissue. I honestly wanted a hysterectomy, but because I haven't had kids, my doctor advised Lupron---(at this point I'd rather adopt.) I was scared to go on the drug afte F 27 4 months

3  Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder Hotflashes, Memory loss, Acne, weight gain, very low sex drive My doctor prescribed Lupron as a last result because I was having debilitating depression, rage, confusion, anxiety etc. two weeks out of the month (afer ovulation and up until several days after my period started). If shutting down the ovaries helped, we would then proceed with removal of ovaries or hysterectomy. The Lupron has helped with the PMDD symptoms, but added its own side effects. Add in Estrogen has been a nightmare. I either have major episodes of depression where I cry all day and can't get to work, or with even very small doses, I have no energy and snap at everyone. I'm tired of struggling with drugs and hormone therapy. I'm going to quit and look into homeopathic medicine. F 35 4 months

2  endometriosis I had severe cramps since i started my cycles.Always fainting when my period started and nausea.Extremely heavy cycles, and misdiagnosed as just cramps.First cyst removed laproscopically -and put on birth control pills-I had a blood filled cyst.Six months later new cysts and second lap including major lazer surgury of ovaries, bladder, bowel erea, and uterus.Cyst ruptured during my first surgury and i feel let more endometrial fluid into my abdomen.Took 3 months of shots.By 3rd shot i was put in hospital****yes a mental hospital.I could not stop crying, couldnt sort my own laundry(too overwhelming)constant worry about stupid stuff and would stay stuck with cycling thinking same thing over and over.My head felt like bugs crawling on my skull after each shot. After first shot that night i had night sweats.By 2nd shot could never keep clothes on constant taking off due to burning heat from inside my body.I wasnt eating and by the third shot i was insane.Put inpatient because i was severely depressed and going crazy.I had inverted female anatomy all dry and no chest- everything shrunk.Forget about sex i was a crazy person- who would wanna be with me? and i didnt want to.If i would have felt better i couldn't due to dryness.I had a failed relationship due to this drug and to this day i have mental health issues ,joint pain and my thoughts are always scattered. My shots were in the late 90's I was not told about any side effects other than dryness and hot flashes.I apparently had depression or bi polar disorder and this drug brought me to the worst level or thatproblem i didnt know i had.Losing your female hormones within 3 months as opposed to 8 years ..the normal rate or menapause....will drive anyone nuts.I am sure their will be a small group of people this drug will not affect them.I am envious of you.I also had floaters in both of my eyes and extreme fatigue.Listen if you wake up and you don't want to eat or breathe....and you are worrying about if someone stole your socks out of the washing machine while you sleep at the mental hospital you took LUPRON.I have never had a problem that severe since nor did i ever before.I am not saying i didn't have issues,i had depression on a smaller scale and some very happy times& some mood swings and some anger.I was also taking birth control pills that have hormones.....they affect you also.I still take them and cross my fingers i don't need more surgury.Adhesions from scar tissue and bladder pain and uterine pain are a part of my life now.Including my worsened mental health from this drug. You ask any member of my family and they will tell you this drug did something to me.I mean i was too out of it to know the difference.I begged for the rest of my shots...when i was starving to death and a wacko.I wanted endo gone at no matter what cost.In the end i was put on estrogen pills to counter react the shot(i flipped out who wants estrogen when it makes endo grow faster???) and thrown in a hospital.I would say it took 6 months to feel almost myself again.I am covinced i will never be 100% I would take this drug despite all i have said happened to me because as of this date Aug 21,2005 I have not needed another surgury. However i may give the credit to my doctor ...maybe he removed all the endo.Since i can't be sure i guess it was worth it to not have the contracting pain 24 -7 like i used to .Hard to believe i can sit here and say i would still take this drug after being in a mental hospital for 2 weeks and home therapy for a month !!!!I am telling you i was messed up for a long time even after being home..years i was still not feeling really normal.I still suffer mentally,I still have pain...just not as bad....birth control helps also-(has it's own list of side effects). And diet....get books on topic.Go to natural food store, evening primrose oil is good .Stay away from soy and greasy stuff, and low salt & caffeine.Last word get help if you are depressed God only knows what would have happened to me...if no one noticed how ill i was. best health and good wishes.  4  shrink tumor from severe endometrio Hot flashes, severe mood swings, severe heat exhaustion, aggressiveness, short temper increase, rare nausea, anxiety, occasional paranoia/jealousy (definitely not normal or warranted) depression, joint pain/achiness, loss of energy. Weight gain (so far 12# and only had three shots in 3 months). Probably bone loss, increased osteoporosis, dry skin, no sex drive to speak of (insert crying here) Insomnia like crazy. Hypersensitivity in peripheral nerves (hands and feet) Unexplained itching on extremities as well. Is there enough room for more? I am putting this here because it cuts my other stuff off in the next column.I thought after the first month I would be just fine considering all I had was the hot flashes (mean as they were). However just after the second shot I slowly started having all of the other I thought after the first month I would be just fine considering all I had was the hot flashes (mean as they were).  3  Shrink ovarian tumor I will put them in backwards because the thing cuts me off! Yes, it has decreased the size in my tumor by almost a centimeter after 3 months, and I have had no bleeding or pain. But that is all I can say that is good about this drug. I swear my wife of 8 years is about ready to leave me. My paranoid thoughts would have her packing even though she is trying hard to understand my suddenly snap tempered self. We have been trying to have a baby and this is my last resort seeing as the other ovary was taken in my first surgery at 19 and this one is covered by an apparently huge tumor. I was told I may have to be on this another 3 months after my surgery this month and we have decided to NOT follow this advice. Apparently this drug does damage to your pituitary glands and the symptoms can follow for months/years after. If I do end up getting pregnant, the poor kid may end up with a one parent household if my mood swings keep up! Please keep me in your prayers because I think I have even driven away the almighty with my swearing! Help!
