LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  endometriosis headaches, moodiness, agitation, hot flashes, chills, nausea, bloating, muscle aches, severe fatigue, forgetfulness, suppressed appetite, decreased sex drive, back pain, dizziness, severe pain (the same pain for the last 9 yrs), hair loss, high cholestrol I started having the pain in Dec 2001. I got diagnosed with endo in Aug 2005 got put on lupron depot the first time had really bad mood swings, depression and hot flashes the got pregnant with my son. In 2008 after I had my daughter I had a hysterectomy (they removed my uterus and cervix). I continued to have the same pain so when I moved I had my new doctor check. They did laproscopic in Jun 2010 and they confirmed that I still had endo. Went on the Lupron depot in Jul 2010 (3 mth shot). I can't take the progestrine (my body went numb when I was on it and i passed out-the doctor said that i was allergic to it b/c of the estrogen-my body produces to much as it is) Went to the doc yesterday and he thought it was weird that I was still in all this pain. So I get to do an ultrasound, cat scan and possibly another laproscopic surgery. The pain hasn't stopped it has gotten worse and with all the side effects I will not take it again. F 28 4 months

2  Endometriosis Hot flashes( at least 1 per hr all day & night), night sweats, trouble sleeping, mood swings, irritability, depression, extreme fatigue, slight hair loss, slight headaches, decreased sex drive, vaginal dryness Took this shot for 6 months in 2009 following a laporoscopy and removal of my right ovary, in hopes of suppressing my endometriosis. Endometriosis still came back even after the 6 months of injection and birth control. Just had another laporoscopy in Aug 2010 on my left ovary(which is thankfully saved!). Have been put back on this shot for another 6 months. Side effects seem to get worse with each injection, especially the hot flashes. I also feel extremely fatigue all the time and very moody and feel depressed sometimes. Hopefully it will help a second time around. Kind of glad I found this site because at least I know I'm not the only one experiencing these symptoms and reading these other experiences help me to be more cautious with this medication.  5  endometriosis Hot flashes and night sweats, some breakthrough bleeding between the first and second shot I completed a 6 month regiman in June.Worked wonderfully for endo-the severe pain was 90% better after the first month. I took progestrin while on regimen and had no side effects. I experienced the side effects at the end of the 6 month regimen when I stopped the progestrin. I should have stayed on it. It took 4 months to get my period back. So far the cramping is mild. Everyone is different but I didn't experience anything scary like some of the posts. F 41 6 months

2   The apathy, depression, lack of concentration and zombie-like state (eyes don't focus properly ptsd-like)are my most troubling side effects though I have hotflashes, joint and foot pain, migraines, nausea and vomiting, and the inability to sleep soundly. ADDED: itching too, more on my scalp but body itching as well. I called my doctor and begged for something to make the depression better. I now have the 7 days estrogen patch. It helps but at the end of the 7 days stretch I cry at the drop of a hat and feel like I'm drowning in hopelessness. This is most concerning since I am a single mom working full-time and trying to go to school. I am unable to concentrate on school/work assignments and most mornings I want to cry at having to face another day like this. This is my second 90 day shot and I am so glad it is to be my last one. I can't believe this drug will be coursing through my veins for another 3-4 months. I thought the pain I'd been having for the last 2 years was bad but this "remedy" is enough to wear a girl down. At first my libido was high, now I don't care much. I can't wash my hair as often as my scalp itches after shampooing and I don't want the all-over body itching;so at times I become my own libido-killing organism. F 43 4 months

1  Endometriosis, Stage 4 At first I was thrilled because my endo was so bad I was considering suicide during my periods. Lupron stopped the periods, but now after 8 months of treatment the pain is slowly returning, and I ADDITIONALLY suffer from extreme fatigue, continued pain in lower left quadrant, hospitalized for gastroenteritis/duodenitis, extreme neck pain and nearly crippling foot pain. Had cortisone injections in knee because it was so bad my doctor thought it was a Baker's cyst. Extreme lower back pain after standing for longer than an hour. Wake in the middle of the night with pain in back, hips, knees. Frightening forgetfulness. Many times I do not remember conversations or names at all, and am sometimes aphasic. I thought I was going insane until I heard this was COMMON with Lupron. Libido? What's that? I am FURIOUS that I didn't know this. And now they tell me the Endo pain will just come right back when I stop taking the shots???? Had I known the side effects could be permanent I don't think I would have taken this drug. I am now heartbroken and hopeless. F 42 9 months

1  endometriosis hot and cold flashes. high and low blood pressure. severe abdominal pain. vomitting. bloating. low temperatures. depression. mood swings. weakness. weight gain. stomach ulcers. stomach absesses. This shot and/or medicine is by far one of the worst decisions in my life. I now have to go get a scope with an gastroenterologist because of severe ulcers and absesses in my stomach thanks to this shot. Do no let anyone get this shot if you can prevent it. The side effects are by far the worst things and most annoying things you could have. F 18 6 months

1  shrink fibroids prior hysterectomy Horrible - blood pressure increased to 158/118 (normal for me 110/70). lightheadedness, dizzy, legs and arms swelled, extreme fatigue, jitteryness, shortness of breath and it never worked! Not worth it. I had one 11.25mg shot in Dec 09. Wish my doctor had told me the true side effects not just menopausal. Been to cardiologist, pulmonologist and endocrinologist since taking Lupron Depot and they are trying to fix the damage the drug has caused to my body. So far it has caused breathing problems (per pulmonologist), I have hypothyroidism and high and very low blood pressure. My lightheadness has never gone away. 5/09 I had a complete physical and was in perfect health. F 49 1 times

3  endometriosis, ovarian cysts headaches, moodiness, agitation, hot flashes, chills, nausea, bloating, constipation, muscle aches, SEVERE fatigue, forgetfulness, suppressed appetite, decreased sex drive, back pain, dizziness, cravings for sweets (some of these could be from the provera my dr put me on to help manage menopausal symptoms) i had many of these symptoms before i started my injections due to my endometriosis. i had to quit my job and withdraw from college, but thankfully i have a strong support system. side effects are pretty bad, but hopefully this will help in the long run. i really don't want a hysterectomy yet, which is my only other option.  3  Endometriosis The worst side effects for me last cycle were defintely fatigue, moodiness, headaches, depression, and hot flashes. I did not experience acne, weight gain, or vaginal dryness that I can recall.I will be on this medicine long term, and plan to update as time goes on to see if my side effects change. I have sever endometriosis and took this medicine in 2009 for 6 months and two weeks ago started taking it again after two surgeries because it is the only thing that will keep my only ovary left suppressed until I am ready to try to have kids, which will have to be assisted with IVF. I will be taking this medicine from now until that point in my life, although it is typically only approved for 6 months. F 21 6 months

2  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Moodiness, NO sex drive, vaginal dryness. I have had two laprascopy surgeries and tried to control the endometriosis and pain with birth control pills. My doctor suggested depo lupron. I just finished my 9 months of the shot and I have to say the pain has decreased for the most part but the side effects are terrible. I took a vitamin called flash fighter 2x daily to help with the side effects. The permanent damage this shot has done to my relationship is awful. Unfortuantly im not sure if this shot was a good idea for me. F 24 9 months

3  endometriosis Both of my tubes are above 90% blocked with endometriosis, i am 29 in october and currently engaged and we want kids soo soo soo bad. This medicine is supposed to work but I dont feel any difference yet. I have stopped having periods but I am still getting cramping and pain. My side effects have been horrible too. I get dizzy, nausious, major migraines every 2nd week of the month/ and or shot given.. bad hot flashes, and my knees are killing me all the time. One thing I also noticed is that i am having HORRIBLE nightmares.. wondering if anyone else having nightmares on it too.? But yah my intestinal problems didnt start till the 2nd series of shots so who knows. All i know is this better be worth it and i better have a kid within a couple years of being off of it. Bc these side effects are not showing me anything and are not seeming worth it quite yet... still in pain, still cant get pregnant with blocked tubes.. so we'll see. Side effects have not gone away with me yet, if anything they are getting more frequent and worse i have been on it for 6 months now... F 28 7 months

4  3,4 myoma hot flashes my gyno.gave it to me to minimize my 3,4 myoma.3,4 is not oversize but it had to get smaller because of its place.it is 3mm near to my uterine wall.doctor says it's dangerous to remove it by laporoscopy.also i don't want an open surgery.i used it for 3 months.( it's lucrin depot in Turkey).i had hot flashes but they weren't so bad if only it's winter.my myoma became 1,6.however i couldn't have laparoscopy because doctor saw another myoma which is near to my abdomen.he says it can burn by the heat.so i got this injection for nothing.i will have an abdominal surgery which i don't wish.by the way i heard about da vinci robotic surgery.tomorrow i'm going to see another doctor to ask about it.it's said to be less harmless than normal laporoscopy.  5  Endometriosis Mild hot flashes, night sweas, diahrea, moodswings, joint soreness Okay I have read several post on this site and see a lot of negative post. I myself have at this point been taking the injections for 1 mo and im already loving it. Yes, you do have some side effects mine include the mild hot flashes from time to time, night sweats but i did have a few of those previously, the mood swings wich if you start paying attention to yourself you can start controling and warning ppl before you go off and tell them hey i apologize but right now isn't a good time im going thru my mood swings lol now the diahrea is the only side effect of this i am having issues with b/c of the fact that everytime i eat anything i have to run straight to the bathroom and its basicly water! so it makes it a little hard to do your every day activities although im told it should get a little better with more injections. i am more than happy with these side ffects b/c before I had so severe pain that during my periods i would have to take a pain pill and muscle relaxer and pass out in the bed or be curled up in a ball, there was times that while working as a cook i had to hit my knees the pain was so tremendous even intercourse was painful now i am virtually pain free besides mild cramps i would suggest to anyone who had the pain i was in to try this and if you can't deal with the sideffects you can always go back to being in pain!  4  Fibroids, anemia Fatigue My first injection didn't work and the bleeding did not decrease substantially. But a second injection given just three weeks later with an increase in norethin acetate (5 mg.) to three times a day eventually stopped the bleeding completely. My hemoglobin increased from 5.9 to 11.1 in five weeks using Lupron with relatively no side effects. I would definitely try this as a means of eliminating heavy bleeding or treating anemia. Just don't expect it to work perfectly after just one injection. F 45 2 months

1  Endometriosis, Ovarian Cysts Migraines, night sweats, joint pain, memory loss, 5-10 lb weight gain per month I was not successful in postponing a hysterectomy with this drug. I wanted children, this was going to help me with that. I gave up and had the hysterectomy and now I will be happy adopting. My question to those out there is, it's been 4 months since I stopped therapy and I now am suffering from seven kidney stones all of a sudden. Has anyone had that problem with this drug? I am trying to link the sudden onset to anything that could have occurred recently and this drug is my only "new" thing. F 42 6 months

5  Severe endometriosis A bit depression, hot flushes and bone loss. I have endometriosis for 20 years. My endometriosis was unstoppable; had 2 surgeries but they did not provide long term relief. Surgeons kept saying a have a lot of powder burn patterns which are impossible to clean up. My last surgery did not go well, and I started to have hernia kind of pain around my right groin. I know that it is by product of my 2nd surgery, and got checked for hernia but it was negative. The surgeon kept denying that it is related to the surgery. Since my 2nd surgery (for 4 years), in addition to pain due to endometriosis I have right groin pain (which is worse than endometriosis and limits my daily physical activities). Now I am scared to have another surgery and for me lupron is the best option for now. Lupron definitely reduces my pain, and prevents the disease spreading further. I have been on lupron for 17 months now and it is the longest I have been on it. I feel wondeful when I am on it: My pain is more controllable and it is great relief knowing that my endometriosis is not getting any worse than it already is. However, recently, I started to have back pain most probably due to bone loss, but I think my doctor will prescribe very low dose hormone to take while I am on lupron. I am planning to be on lupron until I get into menopause -if possible. Other option is to get my ovaries removed I guess but I don't trust surgeons any more. While fixing something, they are causing more damage and it is very hard to prove it. F 40 17 months

4  Severe Endometriosis Hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, insomnia, nausea, mild depression. Basically menopause. I am 21 and was just recently diagnosed with severe endometriosis. This was my only choice, other than a complete hysterectomy, of being somewhat pain free for a little while. But the biggest reason I did the treatment was that I have a very small chance of having children, and Lupron was the only option in increasing my time to have them. There are a lot of negative comments on this website, and though I agree that this med is very hard to handle at times, I would like to say that for women like me who want to some day start a family, it is worth it. My dream is to be a stay at home mom, I want nothing more in life than to have kids! And if that means that I have to go through hot flashes and mood swings and nausea for a few months than its worth it to me. My doctor warned me before I started this that it was crappy and it wouldn't be easy. He was right, I was having 6-8 hot flashes an hour, so many night sweats I couldn't sleep, and throwing up all the time. But when I talked with him about it he put me on norethindrone(progesterone) and it worked great! It doesn't work for everyone, but it worked for me and I had absolutely no symptoms while on it. Now I am just taking womens one a day menopause formula vitamins and they are working great too. So basically I just want to encourage the women that are in the same boat as me to try this treatment and talk with your doctor through it! F 21 4 months

4  Fibroids My uterus was full of tumors and it was the size of a 4 1/2 month pregnancy. I also had excessive bleeding and my periods were from 7 to 10 days. All the other docs wanted me to have a hysterectomy and I did not want to. The choice was mine and I decided to try the shots. I had 2 shots in 3 month intervals, Oct 2008 & April 2009. I was blessed no side effects and my body went into menopause. Then in Sept 2009 my periods started back again and I started with the same issues again. Right now I am back to square one. My doc had to medically retire and my new doc wants to do surgery. NO. I am going to try to shrink them naturally with herbs. Just search and there is a lot of information out there. I was blessed, no issues with this drug. It did what it was suppose to do but my new doc does not believe that I should try it again to shrink the fibroids. She believes that if your body is not ready for menopause this drug will not help. Also some research on my own shows that once Lupron Depot wears out of your system and everything kicks back in, that your tumors may be escalated in their growth. I don't know if this is true, but keeping my eyes open. F 49 6 months
