LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

3  Endometriosis-Stage II hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, severe nausea (began with third injection), mild joint pain, fatigue, some weight gain, moodiness, anger, some sadness The Lupron Depot injections have most definitely helped with the pain that I was experiencing before treatment. I am about to take my fifth injection in two weeks. The side effects are awful. I am not sure if they are bad because I am so young and have never been pregnant and obviously not at the menapausal age, or if the side effects are really that intense. The most common side effects that I experience are hot flashes, headaches, and nausea. It seems as though that every month with each injection, I have a "main" side effect along with the others. In the first month, I mainly experienced hot flashes; the second month, headaches; the third month, nausea here and there as well as hot flashes; and the fourth month, nausea. I was told by my doctor that I shouldn't be constantly nauseated and then was questioned about whether or not I was pregnant. I am not. I was really offended by this because I have already explained that I am not sexually active. So, that's why I found this F 20 4 months

2  Endometriosis Experienced at least 10 hot flashes a day, vaginal dryness, lack of sexual interest. Put on birth control w/o estrogen that did not help - put on one with little estrogen which stopped hot flashes and normalized sex drive, but period has unexpectedly returned lasting for NINE days and less than a week in between these past two periods-Dr. doubled my b.c. dose to stop bleeding, but did not help and made me feel even worse than the shot made me feel. VERY emotional with outbursts of tears, depression, fatigue, fogginess, forgetfulness, lack of motivation, pain in joints Laproscopy to remove enormous ovarian endometrioma cyst led my Dr. to put me on shot. I am pursuing a degree in a VERY rigorous major. it has severly affected my performance in class-I have missed many classes in courses that do not allow for many absences. I also have such a short memory and/or level of concentration that I have to work extremely hard to finish the simplest assignments. I have two shots left but do not intend to complete the round because it has NOT helped with my pain-it is still as intense as it was prior to diagnosis and treatment. Wish I had seen these comments before deciding to do the shot. Hope that everything will return to normal once taken off shot. F 19 4 months

1  Endo, fibroids, ovarian cysts. Hot flashes, moodswings, irratibility, depression, loss of sex drive, weight gain, acne, forgetfulness, fatigue, bowel problems, night sweats accompanied with horrible dreams. Did I miss anything? I am on my third shot. Would not recommend it, but everyone is different. My first shot I had a period for over 2 weeks with every symptom I have discribed. I have been on the addback therapy or Northindrone. My Dr. upped it from 5mg to 10mg to help with the bleeding. It helped after my 2nd shot but moodswings and depression came on tenfold. I have been having periods every 2 - 3 weeks which are always accompanied with severe abdominal cramping. I was just given my 3rd round 2 weeks ago. All I can say is that I feel like I did when they found my Endo, my tumor and my cysts that I lost an ovary because of. I will be honest, during the 2nd shot I had almost a week where I felt good, but thats about it. I would really just like my life and my sex drive back. F 30 3 months

4  Endo Migraines, joint pain, easily bruised, mood swings,VERY short temper, fatigue, hot flashes ( only in the 1st 3 shots), irritability, decreased sex drive BUT increases sex drive the first week after the shot I just had my last shot just over a week ago in a six shot series. Overall it has not been as horrible as I thought it would be (although my husband says otherwise). The side effects have been there the whole time but are mostly manageable. I've had more migraines from the last two shots and the bruising has just gotten bad after this last shot. I'm hoping since it was my last one that I will get back to normal soon and do not have any long term effects. I was very afraid of this medicine due to all of the scary postings. I feel very grateful that I have not have such unmanageable side effects. Hoping to get pregnant in '08! Good luck to all of you and please consider that this drug effects women differently and to make the decision that is right for you in taking it. F 28 6 months

1  Severe Endometriosis Insomnia, severe depression, the worst case of anxiety and phychiatrist has ever seen, hot flashes, terrible mood swings, still hav the endo pain. It works different for everyone but in my own opinion this is a drug from hell. I am on add back therapy, I tkae about 15 pills a day. I am 18 years old and have been with my boyfriend 2 years & i think we are going to have a baby, since its the best known cure. I have been on every medicine you can think of and it hasn't helped. I feel like Im going down a downward spiral.. the pain and depression and anxiety gets worse every day. F 18 3 months

4  Fybroids Hot flashes, night sweats and insommia I've taken the drugs for 2-3 months now and continue to experience hot flashes. They were humorous at first, but are becoming annoying. The good thing is that I took a step back to analyze when I have the hot flashes and they're normally when I'm stressed (positive or negative). With this in mind, I've been able to predict one coming and manage it. I simply fan. I haven't had a period, which is good. I'm taking the medication before a lyproscoptic maectomy surgery. I would recommend it and my doctor was very honest about the side effects that I may experience. She has provided me with sleeping pills, but i haven't taken them yet. The only concern i have now is that I've gained weight and think it's directly linked to the medicine. F 31

4  Large Fibroids 9 cm Hot flashes I will take my 4th shot on 10/8. I'm taking an ultrasound on 10/10. Hopefully the large fibroid has shrinked. Looking for surgery 12/5/07. Drug hasn't been that bad if its helping to create a smoother surgery I recommend it to anyone. Hopefully I look to get pregnant this time next year. F 30 3 times

3  Endo & Cysts Weight Gain 30 LBS, HOT FLASHES, night sweats, confusion, lack of concentration, very moody, short temper. Just not myself. I had cysts removed via laproscopy and then Lupron Depot injections I have just finished my 3rd shot, I refuse to take it anymore, In the beginning the side effects were not as bad and it did shrink my uterus causing the pain to stop. But now the side effects are constant and I just can't deal with it anymore. THe weight gain is horrible, I have gained 30 lbs in just under a year. I have no patience and also very emotional I am fighting with my husband all the time. I get hot flashes all day long, I am waking up in the middle of the night soaking wet from sweat. I just can't deal with it anymore. I would rather suffer through the pain. My Gyn has put me on continous YAZ for now and I go back in 3 months to see how things go. F 29 9 months

4  Endometriosis Lots of hot flashes, vaginal dryness, extreme mood swings I just took my last shot 3 weeks ago. I took it for 6 months to help my severe endo. I had a laparotomy one year ago - they removed my right ovary and tube, but couldn't remove all of the endo. My gyno recommended taking 6 months of Lupron Depot to remove the remaining endo. I recommend it - it has definitely given me a reprieve from the constant emergency room visits. F 33 6 months

5  Endometriosis hot flashes, weight loss, irritability, mood swings, minor depression, no period, NO PAIN I understand that this drug has been horrible for a lot of people, but I am tired of hearing all of the negative things about it. Lupron is a new drug. Not everything is known about it and it effects everyone DIFFERENTLY. I just don't want people who are looking into taking it to read all these negative things and decide not to take it when it could totally change their life. I really like it. I have been on it for a year for severe endometriosis and yes, I have had some of the irritating side effects, but I would much rather sacrifice for that right now so that I can have a chance of having kids in the future.  4  endo hot flashes, decreased libido My Dr. put me on lupron in hopes of decreasing further damage. Found the endometriosis during an exploratory laproscopy and he doesn't want to go back in until Im ready to have kids (at this rate who knows when that will be!) Been on Lupron since we found it at the age of 18 and have been on it since. Side effects have been minimal. Main perk: no painful mentrations in years! In other words, I like the drug. F 21 3 years

4  endometriosis Frequent HOT flashes, insomnia, bone and muscle pain, severe migranes, emotional confusion for 2 days after each injection, as well as injection site soreness. I've just ended my six month lupron treatment after 2 and a half years with endo and after 2 surgeries. It has only been 2 weeks after treatment and the pain is back. It did significantly reduce the pain for that 6 month period, but the pain has definetly returned. Its worth while to try, at least you can have relief for 6 months...if you are lucky. F 23 6 months

1  Endometriosis Weight gain - 20 lbs! Hot flashes, night sweats, vaginal dryness. This was the beginning of 2003, I started the year/Lupron at 125 lbs, and ended it at 145 lbs. And I was excersizing 5x a week! I had tons of hot flashes and night sweats, plus vaginal dryness. I had had a surgery to remove adhesions before going on the Lupron, and after I went off it, I decided not to go on birth control or anything else, and my periods were much shorter than they had originally been (3 days instead of 7) with 1 day of cramps instead of 4. Most of the weight just came off on its own once I was off the Lupron. BUT - I recently had an mri for something else and they discovered an 8-10 cm endometrioma! The first surgery had been laproscopic, this time I had to get a surgery with a laparotomy incision, which is about 7 inches across - to remove it. I spent an entire week in the hospital - it was sooo painful. Plus they took out my right ovary which was totally consumed by endometrial tissue. So much for the idea that the Lupron/first surgery had helped! Now I am F 30 1 years

1  endometriosis heavy menstral bleedi I took the shots for three months 18 years ago. I was 21 at the time. It took over 6 months after treatment to get my periods back. They were as bad or worse than before treatment. Along with all the "normal" side effects of the lupron, premature menopause, hot flashes, weight gain (excessive) mood swings, etc etc etc. 18 years later I was diagnosed with premature ovarian failure. I have completely stopped ovulating about 10 years BEFORE the natural course of menopause. I would not reccommend this drug to anyone unless you are suffering from a life threatening disease (cancer) I cannot be sure that the lupron caused this but I believe in women's intuition and who knows what the LONG term effects are going to be. Protect your health, talk with your physician about LONG term effects as well as short term effects. F 39 3 months

4  Uterine Fibroids insomnia, hot flashes, mood swings, light headaches I had my 1st and only -3month shot 9/14. I still continued to bleed over the weekend but it soon stoped I was depressed because of this and very weak. Today I'm up-beat and I'm looking forward to surgery. I'm not sure what sideaffects to expect later, but for now I'm doing great. F 37 4 days

3  To slow endometrial growth Month 1: Extreme fatigue. Hotflashes hit week 3. Month 2/3: Extreme fatigue (laid in bed full weekends, after work, slow at work), 7 or so hotflashes a day, 1 to 3 headaches a day, and in month 3, mood swings. Dry skin around fingernails, ridges in my nails, even though taking calcium and other vitamins. Funny affect at end of Month 5: Straight hair! These side effects were greatly alleviated with progesterone add-back presecribed at endo of Month 3, and a switch from Paxil to Celexa. Depot Lupron was prescribed following laparoscopy to remove endometrial growths, and help avoid cancer (mom is ovarian cancer survivor). I have NO pain, so this is simply preventative. I receive a monthly shot, and for first few months, most side affects were extreme but tolerable. However, fatigue was awful. In month 3 I felt emotionally fatigued as well. (Having gone through 2 rounds of IVF, I found IVF hormone shifts much easier to handle than this.) I was taking Paxil at the same time as Depot, which seemed to exacerbate the fatigue. Switched to Celexa, which helped but didn't totally alleviate fatigue. ADD BACK of NORETHINDRONE = GREAT FOR ME. After 3 months, my doctor prescribed 5 mg norethindrone (progesterone), which made me feel MUCH better. Now I have almost NO hot flashes or headaches. Ridges in nails still present. My last shot (6 of 6 monthly shots) is next week. I may have a party to celebrate! F 40 5 months

4  Severe Endo with Severe Anemia I have experienced night sweats a few nights a week! I am happy to read the more postive experiences as when I first came to this website every post was negative. I am having a positive experience. I recieved my 2nd shot on 8-29-07 and I have yet to experience a hot flashand but have experienced night sweats which is not a bother to me! Throught the remainder of my treatment I hope it goes as smooth as it is now! So far my experience has been great and I have not suffered from many of the side effects assoicted with this medication! 27 2 months
