LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Stage 4 Endo I had a lap for endo and 10 days later the cramps and pain came back. I was afraid to take lupron becuase of what some list as side affects. I spoke to another person who took the lupron and consulted a second doctor and decided lupron was the treatment option. Now I have had minimal hotflashes, light spotting for 20 days and no other real side affects. The pain from endo actually got better hours after the first shot. The third week when the ovaries were shutting down was painful, but tolerable. The one menstrual cycle was extremely painful, however each week and even day is better. The daily cramps are all but gone. I had almost not taken the lupron because of comments on this page. Im glad I am taken it because it has provided relief. My doctor continued me on birth control for the first two weeks then the add back. The Script assist people were also able to answer my questions as to what to expect and when. F 33 2 months

5  Endo After 3 shots(1 each month)sever hot flashes and chills, mood swings from frist month to last. Vaginal dryness from month2 to month6, complete loss of sex dive by start of month3 lasting until second month w/out shots. Even with all the neg. side effects I would still and am talking this drug a second time around. I was given this drug at 8yrs old daily until I was 11yrs old to stop early onset of puberty. Had I not done so I wouldn't have reached the hight of 5 ft.3in. I was leary of taking it again because I remembered the horrible headachs but anything had to be better than the bleeding and cramping I was going through from the Endo. I started taking 6 months of shots one month at a time in Aug.04 stopped in Jan05 and my Endo sympt. returned in the begining of Apr05, by the time June rolled around I was begging the Dr. to put me back on the shots. I am in month2 of the second round now. The first shot brought on a period 13 days long accompanied by heavy clotting and sever cramping and heavy bleeding, I even called the dr. to ask for a demerol shot for the pain,(that was a first)the dr. refused and told me to build a teepee and hide from my four kids in there untill the pain went away. That pissed me off but my period ended soon after that so I was okay. This second shot I got two days ago and the hot flashes and mood swings are getting annoying but last time I tried addback therapy I had a really bad reaction and I know in a few weeks I will start evening out again and I will be better. I would say this, the lupron has helped me my whole life and I owe my life to the makers but I am only one case and I know it's not for everyone. It helped my Endo to the point that after 3 months I was only taking NSAID pills for the pain and after 3 months w/out the shots I needed my daily doses of narcotics to maintain daily life.  5  Endometriosis Hot flashes, Night sweats, weight gain, water retention, moodiness, exhaustion/constant sleepiness For the first two months of this treatment I felt like I was in hell - the hot flashes were unbearable and I spent a good chunk of my day putting on and removing sweaters and jackets. After the first month, however, my period disappeared entirely as did any pain associated with the endometriosis I had been treated for. I haven't had any bleeding since then nor any cramps. I do fear what will happen when I stop taking the shot next month, though. I hope that I'll be rid of this stubborn fat padding that just won't burn off. F 23 5 months

1  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Night Sweats, Dizziness, Weight Gain, Water Retention, Pelvic Pain on right side, Cramping, Breakthrough bleeding after 2nd treatment, Mood Swings, Crying, Extreme Fatigue, Muscle Aches, Anxious Feeling, Dry Skin, Insomnia This treatment has beena nightmare! I feel worse now than before I started treatment. My only other option was a hystorectomy; so I thought I'd try this as a last ditch effort. Please think strongly before trying Lupron. I have severe bone loss, which I hope will improve after treatment. Good luck and stay healthy! F 29 4 months

4  endometriosis hot flashes, mood swings, some depression, lack of sleep. In 3 weeks I will have completed my 6 month treatment. In The past 2 months most of my pain has subsided. Overall the treatment has been worth it. My pain was so severe I don't remember how I got through the days. The side effects have been difficult. The mood swings were the worst during the first 3 months, I don't remember what a full night of sleep is like, and the horrible hot flashes continue (even as I type). However, if in the end my pain is relieved and I can have children, the side effects will have been more then worth it! F 22 6 months

4  Endometreosis/Fibroid Tumors Weight gain, memory loss, severe hot flashes, fluid retention, insomnia, muscle pain, sore throat, depression, mood swings, anxiety, need I say more...... I have just finished my second 6 month treatment July, 2005. My first 6 mo treatment did not completely take care of all the pain and discomfort associated with endo. I did discover with the help of my Family care Dr. that there was medication to help with all of the severe mood swings, anxiety etc. She prescribed Zoloft so that my family would not divorce me, and added Ativan o.5 mg. to help the insomnia. My family is now able to live with me and I am a calmer person. Lupron is a very good drug for the symptoms associated with endo, however, I highly suggest that you let every Dr. within your medical circle be informed that you are getting this treatment. I learned the hard way by not advising all of my Drs. If you are diabetic like I am, this treatment may effect your blood sugar readings, and also may effect cholesteral levels. I have decided that I will not have any more treatments. My body is tired from the side effects and I feel that another treatment is not neccessary. My Dr. refuses to give me a hysterectomy, which I feel will be my only cure. I have lived with endo since my teen years and was blessed with 2 boys. I hope someday there will be less drastic treatments for women who suffer this painful disease. F 43 2 years

4  endometriosis Severe depression, hot flashes, joint/muscle aches, moodiness, irritability, obsessive crying, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, insomnia my obgyn started my lupron shots after my laproscopy in march. i have been pretty much pain free since then but the side effects have been very difficult to handle at times(especially for the people around me)ive been on anxiety medicine to help with the effects and im finally starting to get some sleep. i still spend alot of time crying and being upset but hopefully that will go away within time. i had my last shot (hopefully) on 7/7/05 and go back to see the doctor in october. so hopefully things will be better soon for me. but at least the pain is gone.  4  Endometriosis Weight gain, severe hot flashes, joint and muscle pain, insomnia, water retention,Severe Severe mood changes, decreased in activity, I am a young mother of a Two year old, and it was becoming hard to play with her, due to severe cramping caused by the Endometriosis. I had been to the Obgyn several times before they starting discussing with me the posibility of having Endo. I then had surgery to have some of the Endo. removed, but they said it was very bad that they didn't want to keep putting me through many surgery that they where going to put me on a medication to not get rid of the Endo. put help prevent the pain. I have had many side affects from the Lupron Injections but I would rather have those side affects then to have the pain I did have before I began the Lupron . I now am able to enjoy being able to enteract with my family. Where before I was always left behid because of the severe pain I was always in. But not now :) F 21

4  Endometriosis severe weight gain and insomnia I was very surprised that I didn't get much of the side effects. I didn't experience hot flashes, thank goodness. Insomnia for about a month and a half was horrible enough .. not to mention all the weight I gained (and right before my wedding too). I haven't had any pain though, which far outweighs ANY side effect (even the weight gain). I am done with my two shots of LD, one every 3 months. I am not sure when I am able to start trying to get pregnant, anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thank you.... Lupron worked for me, but every body is different. God Bless You. F 24 6 days

1  Anemic, heavy menstrual period, Had a biopsy done on 6/24/05 and got the lupron shot the same day. Is for 3 months, supposed to get 1 more. I thought it was going to stop my period but made it worse I was spotting and lightly bleeding after the biopsy, got my cycle a few day's later and am still bleeding 17 days!!!! This was supposed to help my anemia and my possible fibroids. I had a major anxiety attack in the middle of the night (thought I was going to die , I was bleeding from the nose and down there! shaking, weak feeling in the leggs almost fainting, my leggs were on fire from the inside, it was horrible. I'm on prozac and I don't think this is good for me at all. Have horrible mood swings, have insomnia, weird thoughts. No I would not recommend this medicine. It's pure evil. F 40 17 days

5  Fibroids Mood swings, hot flashes, no sex drive, bone and joint pain, vaginal dryness, insomnia (second month), thinning hair, dry skin, depression. I just finished a six month treatment course of monthly injections. The rage that was common with the first month (estrogen surge) is back, but a glass of wine calms the raging beast. All other side effects were bothersome, but not life-altering. I had no symptoms of uterine fibroids prior to treatment - I was diagnosed following a miscarriage. I am looking forward to my period returning so we can start trying to get pregnant again. An ultrasound two weeks after the 3rd injection showed that the main fibroid had shrunk from 6 to 4 cm. I, too, was scared by all of the negative comments prior to starting my course of treatment, but I trust my doctor and the side effects haven't been terrible. F 32 6 months
