LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis I have been on depot lupron for one month exactly. I was terrified to take this shot and read numerous articles and information before making the decision to put an artificial hormone into my body. After Laprascopic surgery in January, I realized I needed additional therapy. I have always been in pain, in fact since I was 13 years old. I have suffered for years with no answer from many doctors. My journey had let me to this. I did my homework and got the shot. I take supplements to counteract the side effects and find myself having few hot flashes but strong headaches. So far i feel that lupron is changing my life. I feel strongly at the end of this medication I will be able to conceive if I want to and that I will have a better life. My endo was so extreme that my doctor said I was the worst case of it he had seen in years. I advise you to read, understand, and prepare before taking this drug. Go into with a positive state of mind and keep yourself on a good diet. Exercise is crucial F 22 1 months

1  Endometriosis First month only had chills and diarrhea. Second shot humm not so bad until....... ok let me back up a little bit. As anyone know with endo one of the signs, one may have is diarrhea well I did. Had my surgery to clean up endo then I was to start Lupron with the 5th day of may cycle. So I had to go thru all that. Well the diarrhea never stopped and instead of hot flashes I got cold flashes. Time for second shot...... Into second week "Oh My" Major flu like aches and pains the diarrhea increased lost about 7 lbs. Went to the ER for help because I didn't put two and two together. No one told me about all this nor is it on the information page. Thank God for this page because I thought I was going crazy. I also have dryness and pain with intercourse. Please let this be tempory or someone will pay for that part of my life being over with. Needless to say that was my last shot. Instead of the 11.7 Million dollars going to further the study for this Drug can we maybe fi Read up on Lupron before doing it or conitune it. It could mean your life or how you live the rest of your life. FDA needs to do something about this. TAKE IT OFF THE MARKET. F 45 6 months

3  Fibroids Haven't had any major side effects. Had some bleeding two weeks before my next period, which did not show up. Lasted a few days. No hot flashes. Blood pressure has been up the last two times I had the shot, but I am already on meds for High Blood Pressure. Injection site is sore, but no swelling. Tired, but not overly so. None of the major side effects that others have reported. Received second shot this past week. F 40 2 months

4  Endometreosis I had hot flashed and night sweats. They were not too bad but were annoying especially after 6 months. I only had a couple emotional moments but I am a very stomg minded individual. I did not have horrible symptoms to begin with. My husband and I have been TTC for 3.5 years now and I had a laparoscapy and they found my bowel, fallopian tube, and 1 ovary bound together and covered in endo and scar tissue. I was put on Lupron 3.5 once a month for 6 months. My lovely 6 months has now ended and I am curious to get some feedback on how long it took women to start their period. March 16th was the 28th day after my last shot. My husband and I are extactic to begin trying again but I am hearing some women can take up to a year to start most within 3-6 months. But they say some start in a few weeks. I am hoping some ladies out there can give me some input. But I can say that the side effects were not to imbearable so I will know how well it all worked once my periods start again or I am prego. I pray for the prego, this has been one long frustrating journey. F 30 6 months

4  Endometriosis Some hot flashes and night sweats which were totally alleviated by add-back therapy (norethindrone). With the first shot I was extremely nauseous and very ‘nerved’/on edge for 3 days (couldn’t work), but that did not happen with the second shot. My main symptom was a Major increase in pain – started during ovulation and went through my period. I’m in the first week after my second shot, so it’s too soon to tell if this is going to work. In addition to add-back I’m taking 1200mg of elemental calcium plus Vitamin D a day to decrease bone loss – I highly recommend that anyone on lupron depot do this. My only real complaint is the increase in pain – if the pain really lets up by the 12 week mark, I will consider this drug a huge success – I will definitely post again at 2 months. F 33 6 months

3  fibroids, anemia bone and muscle pain, hot flashes, tiredness, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain my doctor put me on this to stop my periods so i could build up my blood count so that i could have surgery. i am and always has been anemic. since i do not accept blood he did not want to do surgery to remove my 4 large fibroids while i had a low blood count. i have super heavy periods and i hope that removing my fibroids will help me to have "normal" periods. anyway, this medication is making me bleed! i started bleeding 6 days ago and i continue to bleed. nevertheless i had a doctor appointment yesterday and he said my blood count is better and i can have the surgery next week. i don't know how my blood count can be better since i have been losing blood. but great let's do this and be done with it. when will the bleeding stop? i was most worried about weight gain but so far i actually think i am losing weight. i am doing zumba and being very strict on my diet so that i won't gain and besides that my abdomen hurts so i don't feel much like eating some days. first week my back and hips hurt off and on but that has gone away mostly. my hip hurts sometimes but that may be from zumba classes. little bit of hot flashes, but not too bothersome. mostly i am irritated about the bleeding. it is steady and has not stopped for 6 days now.  4  Infertility due to Endo Very mild hot flashes - maybe three a day and night. Zero libido. Other than that, not bad at all. Was very scared about the shot after I received it and read the reviews but in all honesty I have not experienced any terrible side effects. The hot flashes are very tolerable and do not disrupt my day. Night sweats are a bit harder because they do wake me up several times a day. The libido thing...well its not a big problem for me as it is for my husband. I surely hope it works for me, right now its hard to tell because even though I had bad endo (removed most of it by laparoscop) I never had sever pain so I cant say that it cured my pain. I guess I wont find out if it worked until after I am done with the therapy and I hope to become pregnant. F 29 6 months

5  Severe Endometriosis Hot flushes (ie when a little warm will become very so/sweat); occasional nightmares (I believe associated with Aygestin) Extremely positive experience. After a laparoscopy to remove an ovarian cyst, part of an ovary, and severe/widespread endometrosis growths, I am taking Lupron shots 1 every 3 mos for 9 mos. I was in chronic pain with the untreated endo, had no energy, and gained 30lbs in a year. Since the surgery + Lupron + Aygestin I have my life back; energy, no pain (with the exception of some cramping around the time of what would have been my first period, but not as bad as before treatment), and minimal side effects. I have lost weight because I've returned to a moderate exercise regimen that I was unable to do when in so much pain from the endo. I follow a fairly strict menopausal diet (including restricting alcohol intake) that I think works well to reduce the hotflashes, prevent weight gain, and hopefully prevent osteoporosis/loss of bone mass. Physician recommended Black Cohosh and Slow Mag for hot flashes, and I haven't experienced any. FYI, my physician suggested taking Aygestin earlier in the day if the side effect of violent nightmares is being experienced. F 41 80 days

4  endometriosis Sweats and chills, mood swings, 80 lb weight gain I had severe endometriosis. I took lupron depot after my first laporoscopy. I did have major emotional mood swings. The hot flashes and cold chills were bad, and the weight gain was extreme, however it took 5 years before my next laporoscopy surgery and it was knowwhere near as bad the second time around. My doctor put me on a hormone patch while on the drug and that did help with some side affects. I would take this drug again. It is my feeling that even though I had the side affects it was worth the 5 years of less pain. Thankfully my friends and family supported me through the side affect caos. Until I had the surgery and this drug I never new what it felt like to have a "normal period". F 32 6 months

1  Endometriosis Weight gain, hot flashes, vaginal dryness, night sweats, mood swings I started Lupron 2 months after my 2nd surgery for endometriosis. I took 1 shot every 3 months for a year! I was only 18 at the time. By far the worst mistake I ever made. After the Lupron was finally out of my system, the endometriosis came back. I finally found a specialist in Birmingham, AL (Dr. Alex Childs) and he did my 3rd surgery 1.5 years ago and I have hardly had any pain since. I suggest going to a specialist before letting a regular ob/gyn put you on this medication as a last resort! F 23 12 months

1  Endometriosis Taken in 2000, yes that is 2000 and Lupron has ruined my life and left me disabled permanently. I suffered immediate toxic reaction side effects that have destroyed my immune system. Doctors at the Medical Hospital of Virginia - MCV advise the med altered my immune system and physiologically changed my body causing MULTIPLE AUTOIIMUNE DISEASES THAT HAVE ALMOST COST ME MY LIFE REPEATEDLY. RUN, DON'T EVEN CONSIDER TAKING THIS TOXIC SHAM OF A DRUG THAT CONTINUES TO RUIN LIVES AND KILL ITS VICTIMS!!  5  Diagnose/treat endometriosis Hot flashes, small bump at injection site. This drug is amazing - it almost completely wiped out my cramps and significantly lightened my periods. I've only had one period since my injection 3 months ago, which is normal. I have no side effects when taking Aygestin daily. My ob/gyn says if she can keep my pain down for 6 months, then a longer-term endometriosis treatment is more likely to work. I wish I could stay on this stuff forever, I love not having any periods! But definitely take the Aygestin with it or the hourly hot flashes will drive you nuts. F 39 3 months

5  Shrink Endometriosis for surgery Hot flashes and night sweats I know this drug has a bad reputation so I am writing a good review. I took this drug for four months after my first laproscopy in preperation for my second surgery to shrink what endo was growing on my bladder. This drug significantly shrunk the endo so my surgeon did not have to do extensive work or remove any part of my bladder. It made my surgery easier and certainly less stressful. I suffered hot flashes on and off, but thats about it. I didn't experience any weight gain, but I workout 5-6 days a week and maintained a healthy diet while on this drug. F 30 4 months

5  Endometriosis I had occasional headaches and nausea throughout the treatment. The most noticeable side effects of escallated cramping and sharp pain came at about week 4-5 of treatment. The pain peaked just as described and then it was amazing how great I felt after that. The pain was nearly completely gone. I feel like I have my life back. There certainly are side effects to this treatment, just as there are to many others. Every one is different and remember that there are many success stories out there, but often you see more of the "bad reviews"...Just as when you receive great customer service somewhere you might tell one person, but if you have bad service you will tell ten people.  4  Endometriosis I'm currently receiving an injection of 11.25 mg of Lupron Depot every 3 months. The pain I was having due to my Endometriosis has gone away completely, however, I am experiencing a lot of hot flashes and mood swings. I also lost 8 lbs in a matter of 3 months which does concern me as I'm only 5'3" and now weigh 104lbs. I just started a new medication to help with the hot flashes. Everyone is different and the negativity about this medication made me leery at first. The only thing I have negative to say is the hot flashes can be HORRIBLE at times (but I learned to dress in layers and wear light clothing), but I'm willing to take them over the pain. If you're considering Lupron Depot, just remember that everyone is different and your side effects could be minimal like mine.... it's worth a shot! (no pun intended) :) F 26 3 months

4  Endometriosis Headaches, slight weight gain, facial hair I was diagnosed with stage 3/4 endo during lap. I have multiple IUI and 1 IVF failure. The doc suggested lupron depot for 3 months before next IVF suggesting it will quieten the endo and help in mt next ivf cycle. I have just finished my 3rd shot and my IVF starts in 2 weeks. I was on add back with oestrogen pills and progesterone, so I had periods every month but the pain got lesser each month. I could not function before my periods earlier and used to have horrible clotting and headaches. Now I do not need painkillers, atleast for the past 2 cycles. I do not know if it will help with my IVF. I will find out in a month. But I had none of the side effects I was scared about. I have felt totally normal while on lupron, probably a little better in terms of my energy level and mood. I wish I had not been so scared of this medicine. Also- to add, I was also on calcium supplements. F 34 3 months
