LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endometriosis Hot flashes, migraines, weight gain, immune system issues, interstitial cystitis, irritable bowl I had my last shot in March 07 and it was a 3 month shot. I still have not resumed periods. I was told that I had interstitial cystitis but now know that my immune system turned on me. I took matters into my own hands and started detoxing my body with colonics and started taking Immunocal Platinum and Tart Cherry. All symptoms of IC and IBS are almost gone. I was a size 0 in October 06 and now am a size 6 thanks to Lupron. Think twice before taking this shot. Doctors worry about the calcium loss and it also depletes potassium, magnesium, sodium, and affects your liver. F 36 9 months

4  endo sleeping problems, period 2 weeks after the first shot get my second shot tomorrow. I am glad I decided to try it after so much pain & surgery. I had a bad period 2 weeks after the first shot but the doc said that would happen so I was prepared. I have trouble sleeping and some mood swings but NOTHING compared to the agony I was in before. No bad hot flashes even. Those will probably start soon but that's ok. I'll just walk around with a fan, lol! Always remember everyone is different. I'm glad I went for it. My life is better now.  3  Severe Endo, Heavy bleeding My lower back hurt some, not sure if I can say that is from the shot! I read all the post's and was not going to take this shot at all after reading all the horrible experiences others have had from this shot. I spoke to my doctor and decided to give it a try. I just took my first shot yesterday and feel fine. Now the side effects might come later but for right now I feel like I usually do. I thought right after I got the shot I was going to have a hell of a time because of the horrors I read on here, but again nothing yet. I will post in a month, I hope if I do experience side effects they ae not to bad. F 26 1 days

1  Ovarian Cyst + endo Hot flashes, insomnia, irritability, anger I would not recommend this drug to any woman who cares about having any kind of a sex drive. I took lupron for 6 months almost 4 years ago when I was 22. I am now 26 and have no sex drive whatsoever, and it's killing my boyfriend. I have no desire anymore at all. I wish I would have been given other options, or I wish I would have reseached this drug more. I am sitting here crying reading some of the comments because they are all what I feel. Also, my anger has increased since taking the shots. I seem to fly off the handle over little things now, and it seems to be getting worse. My legs and ankles ache all the time now, and I'm not sure if it's from the lupron or not, but I read other people have aching joints as well. Please, if you're told you have to take this, ask tons of questions, and see if there are other options you can try! Good luck to those of you who are taking it. I hope it turns out differently for you than it did for me! F 26 6 months

4  Uterine Fibroids/Myomectomy I am experiencing hot flashes but they are not that bad. Also vaginal dryness. I'm taking my 2nd shot on 7/31 The bulge in my side from the fibroid has gone down some. It doesn't feel like it used to. I'm hoping to shrink the size of the uterus and the fibroids to have a myomectomy and keep my uterus in tact to have children. The side effects haven't bothered me like they've done others. The hot flashes are bothersome but they pass rather quickly. My period was light but lasted longer than what I'm used to. Now I have some real minor spotting which is okay. I hope it stops the period. F 30 30 days

4  multifocal breast cancer hot flashes, bone pain, anxiety, very dry skin, dry mouth, dry eyes, injection site inflamation, complete supopression of menstural cycle, difficulty in gait, and a mirad of other symptoms dependent on the time in the shot cycle. The last two shots were the 3 month sort and the symptoms were much worse when compared to the monthly shot. I do not recommend the 11.75 ml shot. Opt for the monthly shot as it is much more tolerable. The doctors do the big shot for convenience...Now I am off the shot my life has returned to a much more normal experience with only slight abdominal symptoms when compared to before the shot. I opted for hormonal intervention rather than the standard chemo offered for my DCIS and invasive breast cancers, stage 2. At 49 I had 2 daughters to raise. Overall it was a better experience than what I witnessed other women go through with chemo. There is no long term heart effects as with Chemo. I recommend this shot on the basis of survival. I wish they had treated me 5 years earlier for the polycystic syndrome, maybe then I could have avoided the cancer assault. Just try to turn it into a chemical Adventure! This shot stopped the terrible menstural syndrom I suffered with for 8 years. 54 3.5 years

4  uterine fibroids, anemia pain in joints, weight gain, retaining water I took the 11.25 3 month injection. When my doctor first offer it to me I did not want to take it but then 2 months later I had the worst menstrual cycle every--it made me anemic. I was rushed to the emergency room from my job. My anemia was so severe that I could not have a subtotal hysterectomy. I felt terrible. I am on iron and this medication. Even though I have the above side effects, I am thankful that I am not bleeding like before--I could not live bleeding like that. And the iron regime I am on is making me feel somewhat normal. I have been able to start back exercising--even though my knees and leg hurt but not to the point where I can not function. My goal is to be able to have the surgery which is scheduled for Sept 18th--so I am hanging in there and trying to keep active as much as possible-especially yoga--knowing that all of this is temporary.  4  Fibrods Not too many side effects. The side effects that I had were: hot flashes, migrane headaches (first 2 months), minor memory loss (starting month 4). I was very afraid to take the Lupron because of all the negative comments I read. However, this is the best I have felt in the past two years and I am sad that I will be coming off the Lupron soon. I have a lot more energy and was able to start working out again. I'm hoping that my prior symptoms won't come back. F 32 5.5 months

4  Endometriosis and ovarian cyst Some hot flashes, forgetfullness, fatigue, and muscle joint stiffness. This is my 3rd injection and the positive's way outweigh the negative's. I am overall pleased with the injections and was scared to death about getting them. I am so happy to be off of Vicodin and on with my life. The side effects I have listed are mild and very tolerable. F 35 90 days

4  endo trouble sleeping, bad period after 2 weeks pain is over and I'm starting to feel better. Glad I tried it. Everyone is different and some of the side effects are because your body does freak out when estrogen is completely gone. F 38 21 days

4  prostate cancer stage 4 The most disturbing side effect has been that Lupron has caused inflammation(feels like heart burn) in my stomach and small bowels. As a result I want to soothe the burning by eating all the time. My waist size has gone up two inches and my weight by twenty pounds over the period of a year. The standard medication of heart burn (tums, zantac, etc.) does help to ease the burning in my stomach but not in the small bowels. Lupron has lowered my PSA to 0.0 and effectively supressed any libido which at my age (76) is something I can live with. I would be an enthusiastic user but for the heartburn and weight gain.  3  uterine fibroids I have been having hot flashes, nervousness, mild headache, night sweats, mood swings I will be on Lupron for 3 months. I have taken my second injection. After the first injection when I had my check up, the fibroid reduced by 2.5cm and I am hoping that at the end of the 3 month dosage the fibroid will shrink even more, before I go in for surgery. I had a miscarriage in the 17th week, fibroid being the main cause of the miscarriage. I am hoping that I will be able to conceive once I get done with my surgery and have no further bad pregnancies due to fibroids. F 31 1 months

3  Large Uterine Fibroids Hot flashes, night sweats, shortness of breath, chest pains and light-headed. Took a 3 month injection to reduce massive fibroid. Ended up having hysterectomy anyway. Slighty reduced size of fibroid. Hot flashes are the pits. F 41 2 months

4  prostate cancer impotence, breast tender and swelling, back and leg pains started lupron 3/06 3 weeks before 42 imrt treatments for gleason 7, psa 4.3, t2c, scans negative outside prostate area. i really hope this increases odds of no reacurance, however i don't know if i can take my next shot, the side effects are bad and i can't find any conclusive study/research that proves this extends survival, beyond what occurs with high dose radiation even dr. says it is not showing great increase in ongoing RTOG trials just now ending, but does show small improvement, final data on full 2 years of lupron coming soon. THE GOOD NEWS IS MY PSA HAS BEEN <.1, AND I HAVE TREMENDOUS FAMILY SUPPORT. may GOD bless you all. M 55 17 months

1  endometriosis/fibroids/painful per, SEVERE, CONSTANT nausea, extreme weight gain. This drug made me sick as a dog. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG!!!! Remember, once you're injected, there's no taking it back. I had to seek alternative medicine to counteract the debilitating side effects of Depot Lupron. My periods/endo/monthly pain are as bad as they ever were. I received NO relief from this POISON drug. After complaining a couple of times to my "personal case nurse", who was supposed to check in every few days, she stopped calling me! I've been unable to lose the "menopause weight/shift of weight around the middle", and I'll just have to go through natural menopause again! DO NOT TAKE IT!! F 45 4 months

5  Prostate Cancer My primary side effect is hot flashes. I may be experiencing some extra tiredness, but hard to tell if it is age or Lupron. My prostate and everything associated was removed, February 2006, so I knew my sex life would be over. Small amount of cancer, about one gram, still in my system. I am on intermitent therapy. I take a monthly shot, 7.5 mg., until my PSA is less than .1 for two months. Therapy then stops until my PSA goes up for two bi-monthly tests. I continue to be active physically riding an excercise bike and lifting weights almost every day. I also play tennis once or twice a week. I have lost about 10 lbs. in the last year as I have also watched my diet, primarilly less red meat. I return to M.D. Anderson annually for a check up. Just had first annual check up and considered in excellant shape. M 69 12 months

2  Endo,Irregular bleeding,Anemia I have not experienced them yet, however after reading all of your comments I really think I am not taking this stuff! On June 22, 2007 I had a laparoscopy and a DNC, before I had these procedures I was hospitalized for Severe Anemia do to heavy blood loss from a month long period and had to have a blood transfusion. Other than the Severe Anemia and the very irregular periods I had no pain. My OBGYN stated I will bleed to death because of the Anemia if I do not do something about the issue. So I had those two procedures and I thene found out I have Severe Endo. Ever since these two procedures I have had nothing but headaches and stomach cramps and pains. I am now to go on lupron dupot for 6 months and then if that does not help with the severe endo I have to have a hysterectomy! After reading all these comments about this drug, I know I cannot handle those side affects. I just wanted to thank all of you for your honest opinions! F 26 0 days
