LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endo hot flashes, no desire for sex & dizziness I had a strong pain in lower stomach 2 months after getting off my b-control to try to get pregnant that's when they found out I had a cyst and after that they found out the endo I did Lupron for six months had my last shot about 30 days ago.. I'm waiting anxiously for my period because I want a baby really bad ..... The side effects are still here can't wait to get rid of those.... Any suggestions in wanting to get pregnant???  4  Endometriosis Anxiety, weight loss, joint pain, moodiness, fatigue I'm in my third month. The biggest side effect is anxiety. The pain is completely gone though. I was on this once before last year and it really does help with the pain, if you can deal with the other side effects which can be pretty bad at times. F 21 3 months

2  Shrink Fibroids, bleeding Pain at injection site briefly, increased frequency & intensity of migraines and acne. My bleeding has not stopped. However, it is not heavy. Don't know about the fibroids yet. I will give it the three months before I say this isn't any good. I chose Lupron to avoid the surgical options which seem like overkill in my situation. The acne isn't that much but having my migraines come more often and be worse is horrible. F 52 30 days

4   hot flashes, joint pains, frequent urination, weakness, dry mouth+other areas I have been reading all of your comments, and I am getting a little worried. I have been on lupron for 6 years. I was diagnosed with endometriosis at 16, and have had 2 surgeries so far. Lupron is the only thing we have found to keep my pain managable, but now as Im getting a little older, I am started to grow concerned about what side effects it may cause. I was told about the osteoperosis, but not much more than that...has anyone been on it for a length of time, or have any suggestions for me? F 23 6 days

4  Endometriosis Hotflashes during the night, nausia, fatigue, headaches. So far not too bad. I had surgery for mild endometriosis 5 weeks ago, got my Lupron (3 month)shot 1 week after surgery. So far I feel constant nausia, heaches, and fatigue. I did get my period 5 days after the shot and I was so happy because there was no severe pain, just a mild discomfort but no horror!! So I guess both the surgery and the drug helped. My bigest reason to get all this doen is to become pregnant after the treatment so after 3 years of TTC our fingers are crossed!!!! F 33 3 months

1  Endometriosis Insomnia, loss of appetite, depression, severe anxiety, mood swings, hot flashes, & loss of energy. I stopped taking Lupron in September of 2007. I was on for a total of 4 months. I still experience insomnia almost every single night. Even the strongest sleeping pills will not put me to sleep. I have been told there still may be traces of Lupron causing these problems. Before Lupron I never experienced anxiety, and never had trouble sleeping. I am currently taking Yaz to treat my endo, but it is causing severe weight gain and stretch marks. If anyone knows a better treatment please email me! [email protected] F 20 4 months

1  to shrink fibroids count all side effects listed by others except weight gain this treatment did not shrink my fibroids, they grew :( so now I am worse off than before and my body is in total turmoil as I am coming off it, been spotting black yuck for over a week now after my last shot 6 weeks ago, NOT HAPPY! initially I thought they shrank because they were harder to feel from the outside but they just got softer.  4  suspected endometriosis Not sleeping well but OTC drugs are helping that. Mild hot flashes. Lower back pain. I had a hysterectomy 1/23/08 for severe pelvic pain. I kept my ovaries. I still had severe pelvic pain. I went to 6 different doctors looking for an explanation. New Dr. in Philly suspected endo. I get my third monthly shot Fri. The pain is getting better. Not like someone threw a switch and it all went away, but gradual "feeling better" each day. Two days forward, one day back. I love the days I feel good and am praying this is the answer. I have to go back to Dr. and find out what we do next. F 45 3 months

3  Endometriosis Intense hot flashes (quite frequently), insomnia/hypersomnia, short term memory loss, mild acne, tiredness, spotting, anxiety, SEVERE DEPRESSION (suicide attempts) I'm still up for another round of Lupron and I'm not sure if I'm going to proceed. My symptoms definitely have gotten better, but I'm not sure if the side effects are worth it. I went through a major life change immediately following my first shot. It's hard for my primary care physician and OB to know if the severe mental distress going on is greatly aggrevated by the Lupron or if it's simply from my environmental stressors. The hot flashes are annoying and VERY hot...kind of embarrassing to explain at my age as well. The insomnia comes and goes with bouts of hypersomnia (more than 12 solid of sleep). Short term memory loss is basically forgetting an appt. or where I put my keys, etc. The acne isn't as bad as I feared but I had perfectly clear face before so I noticed. My anxiety level is through the roof although that could also be from outside elements. My dentist even had me fitted for a mouth guard bc he noticed signs of nervous grinding at my 6 mo!  4  endometriosis not bad at all. just some moodiness and a few heart palpatations here and there had a very large cyst on my left ovary so had it removed and thats when the endo was found. about 6 months later found that the cyst came back again so was put on lupron for 6 months. ive only had one injection so far (the 3 month dose) and havent had very many side affects so far. getting my second and last shot tomorrow and hope the side effects dont get worse the longer im on it. had an ultrasound done and the cyst has shrunk quite a bit already so at least i know its not all for nothing. oh and by the way im not taking any add back therapy because that has alot of side effects itself.  4  Endometriosis Occasional night sweats, weight gain This is my 6th month on this medication. I get a shot every 3 months. I had surgery to remove my right ovary and fallopian tube due to cysts and endometrioma. My OB-GYN put me on this drug so I will be on temporary menopause and hopefully help with keeping the endo at bay. Don't get scared to try this med, each patient will react differently. Fortunately, I did not experience all the side effects that affected others. The worst side effect for me is the weight gain. But hopefully, I will lose it when I stop with the treatment.  5  Acute Endometriosis night sweats, fatigue, depression, bloating, dry mouth Officially diagnosed at 22. 1st laparoscopy at 23. 2nd at 25. Injected with depot lupron for 9 months after the 2nd surgery and quite frankly, barely remember anything except sleeping for a year....But it worked. I was pain free for over 14 years and now, after surgery #3, I am on it for 6 months again. F 38 30 days

2  Endometriosis pain night sweats, EXTREME hot flashes, acne, EXTREME weight gain, horrible mood swings, low energy, headaches I was put on Lupron to help me manage some chronic pain I have been experiencing due to my endometriosis. Let me remind everyone that I completely trust my GYN,however, this decision that she made was a questionable one. Not only is my pain not completely under control, some days it is actually worse than before I took the Lupron. The first month I took Lupron I gained 10 lbs. I have little to no energy to do anything. Lupron might be a miracle drug for some folks but for me I can do without it.I told myself that I am ready for a hysterectomy just to be done with this problem.Anyone questioning using Lupron, I would say try it out for 2 months to see how you like it before listening to other people's opinions to persuade you.  4  Endometriosis Night sweats, hot flashes, mood swings, weight gain, bloating, depression, insomnia I won't say it wasn't an extremely difficult six months while I was getting monthly injections, but I will say I think it was worth it. It took a long time to get my period back, and once I did, even though the cramping was awful, I didn't have any of what I like to call, episodes of pain. That's the get-rushed-to-the-emergency-room type of pain. As far as during the treatment, I remember the night sweats, hot flashes, and insomnia were unbearable in the beginning, but with add-back therapy it was manageable. The weight gain was disappointing (approx 30lbs), and I still haven't dropped any of it since my injections stopped, but I'm working on it. I recently researched natural therapy online, like vitamins and herbs, and I bought a boat-load of both. I am VERY happy with the results! The worst thing for me had been the complete lack of any metabolism even after the treatment. I continued to feel lazy, tired, and depressed. My stomach was unbelievably bloated all the time.  5  ENDO. SEVERE night sweats, depression, headache, some weight loss, mood swings, decreased energy level, constant nausea/vomiting for 2 weeks after injections Even with all the side effects I've experienced I would do it all over again in a heartbeat! For the first time since I was 13 years old I have no pain. I couldn't imagine a life without pain before taking Lupron. F 28 6 months

2  shrink a fibroid for surgery I STILL EXPERIENCE body heat, dryness everywhere(skin, mouth, and inside the familiar area), severe depression!!, swollen glands, lymph nodes, bone density(decrease teeth enamel and spine) My husband and I met late in life. We became married @ the tender age of 35. I had surgery to remove a fibroid in January 2007. The same obgyn told me the fibroid was gone and I could have children. NOT SO!! I switched to a different obgyn. Many ultrasounds, he could not find the problem. He referred me to a fertility doc. The fertility doc did another ultrasound and concluded it was a decent sized fibroid. The only way to remove it was to be put on Lupron Depot 11.25mg for 3months. I was uncertain if I had the option of: RECEIVING THE SHOT ON A MONTHLY BASIS ALONG WITH THE FERTILITY SPECIALIST PERFORMING ULTRASOUNDS EACH MONTH TO SEE IF THE FIBROID HAD SHRUNK ENOUGH TO HAVE IT REMOVED EARLIER. I regret having the shot IN ONE DOSE AND NO ULTRASOUNDS AFTER EACH MONTH!!! Despite me having the surgery and supposedly the fibroid is gone, I must wait until the LUPRON RELEASES ITSELF OUT OF MY SYSTEM!!! ONE PROBLEM-- I DESPERATELY WANT TO HAVE MANY CHILDREN!!! Ladies, if Lupron must be admin F 37 3 months

3  Adenomyosis Hot flashes, cold flashes, severe mood swings, incredible weight gain, difficulty sleeping, mild depression, memory loss, etc..etc...etc... It seems like the longer I've been on the shot, the more side effects I experience...or the side effects become stronger. Am taking low doses of Add-Back Therapy, which has helped alleviate the severity of hot flashes. Took the shot for 6 months and the Dr. wanted me to go another 4 more...so I'm currently on shot #8. Gained over 15 lbs (in 6 months), hair seemed like it was falling out but started to take Biotin and that seemed to help some; not sure how I feel about this yet...just know I can't wait until I don't have any more shots.  3  Large fibroids/ cyst on ovary I have experienced Hot flashes, Night Sweats (bad here lately), some headaches. Some short term memory lost( nothing significant), Lack of energy. The only side effect that is daily is the hot flashes and night sweats. I was given one shot on Apr.7, 2008. It was for 3 months. My gyn was hoping to shrink my fibroids and uterus some. Before performing a myomectomy. However, I went to the doctor two weeks ago and my fibroids shrunk only a little. So it did not help much. The side effects are annoying. I was afraid to take this shot because of the info I read on this site. Don't be afraid to try this shot, it might work for you everyone's body is different...
