LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Endo Fibromyalgia and chronic myofascial pain, headaches, fainting. Also multiple hormone disturbances and autoimmune thyroiditis. Why is this drug still on the market? It has destroyed my life and caused so much suffering for nothing! Big Pharma gets rich - this is the only "positive" effect of Lupron! Don't take this drug! I'm not dissatisfied but disgusted. My life will never be the same anymore. And I still had to undergo surgery. Lupron caused all these chronic problems really for nothing! Please look for a good endo surgeon and don't waste your time and your health with such a hazardous drug. F 37 5 months

1  Suspected endo Seizures, complicated migraines, Cushing, Addie's syndrome, nuropathic pain. And unbearable hot flashes, bladder disorder. I won't take it again! It's poison. Be very careful about any drugs you're taking, especially depo. You can't just skip the next pill if you experience any problem. Just have to wait it goes away... But such a drug can stay in your system for years. Reconsider your options before taking Lupron or other depo drugs. F 41 3 months

1  Endometriosis, bleeding disorder I have long lasting side effects: memory, attention and concentration problems, asthenia, bad back pain and migraines, orthostatic hypotension as well as advanced osteoporosis and arthritus. This drug is not safe!! Just read the package insert. Lupron is hell. Just do a search before starting and you'll see how many people have severe and lasting side effects. Please don't take the risk! I'm feeling like a 70 years old and I'm only 32... F 32 3 months

3  endometriosis hot flashes, mood swings, severe headaches, body aches, joint pain, tired all the time I have only taken 2 shots and have not had a period, The first month was questionable for me, I was miserable but after over 3yrs of painful periods I was willing to try anything now.......I just want a hysterectomy, I have had 3 wonderful boys with no plans of having anymore kids and am not looking forward to pain coming back. I had my last shot 09/18/06 and it is now 10/26/06 and still no period but lots of cramping. I have had migraines like never before and although cramping is not as bad right now it is getting worse as time goes on. I only agreed to the shot because my Dr was not willing to do the hysterectomy until i tried this. F 32 2 months

4  Large fibroids, heavy bleeding Minimal hot flashes, mild insomnia ABSOLUTELY NO SEX DRIVE-putting a serious strain on my relationship. I'll be re-evalutated this week to see if the fibroids have shrunk. Definitely stopped the excessive bleeding. F 43 3 months

4  Prostate Cancer Severe shortness of breath, night and day sweats and total loss of libido. My version is of leuprolide acetate is called Eligard. Does a good job of keeping my PSA to less than 0.1 but I also have the Alpha 1 deficiency which amounts to inherited emphysema. I was functioning normally despite the Alpha 1 before I received the first four month injection. Severe shortness of breath began immediately after the first injection. The condition of my lungs hasn't changed for two years and my pulmonary MD sees no reason for the change and attributes it to leuprolide acetate (Eligard). Recently had the fourth injection and shortness of breath worse than ever. Is there an alternative drug? The side effect is turning me into a couch potato. I am really considering stopping the treatments. Walking accross the room results in shortness of breath. I thought this info would be helpful to anyone unfortunate enough to have prostate and lung illness. M 67 1 years

5  adenomyosis, ovarian cysts, fibroid Hot flashes (with cold flashes afterwards), night sweats, slight memory loss, some hair loss in upper pubic area I took one injection per month from 2/06 - 7/06. It's been 10 weeks since my last shot. I'm still having the flashes and night sweats pretty bad but was told all side effects would be gone within 12 weeks. I had a pelvic sonogram a few weeks ago and my one small fibroid and 2 ovarian cysts are gone. My period has not returned. I am so ready for these flashes to be gone but I would say that this shot was truly worth it because I did not want surgery. I will report here again if and when my period starts back up and if the adenomysis still bothers me after the shot wears off. F 53 6 months

4  endometriosis hot flashes (frequent, but bearable), weight gain (about 15 lbs), memory fuzziness I had stage III endo with cysts in both ovaries and adhesions...I had 3 one month injections, hot flashes probably started towards the end of the first month; now I am on a 3-month injection, and started add-back therapy, so my hot flashes are much less frequent now... I had my period only once in the beginning, so I can't really tell if my cramps will be lessened... and I am still having some pain, but I've been told by my gyno that it's due to scar tissue from my laparscopy, not reformation of cysts; also, she said that she could feel much less "stickness" as I had had a good amount of adhesions before the laproscopy and have not reformed as of yet.. good luck to anyone who takes it; it's a difficult decision (I was completely against Lupron at first because I did not want to go thru menopause at this age), but I'm taking it now and it's definitely bearable and might just be worth the 6-12 month suffering in order to make it easier to have kids later in life...  1  endometriosis Hot Flashes, Memory loss until today and it's being 3 years since I used it. Panic attacks/ anxiety, fear and epilepsy like symptoms. Chronic insomnia until now. This is the worse medications one can have ever put on. It made my life misserable for the six months I was taking it and it's still doing it. I've never being able to sleep more than 3 hours per night after this medication. Please, try your best not to have it. Thanks to my Lord and Savior JesusChrist, that has helped me to get healed and feel better with new strenghts. But if I ever have to have Lupron depot again, I rather have hysterectomy. F 24 6 months

1  Endometriosis/Infertility Severe hot flashes, night sweats, insomnia, weight gain 25lbs., joint pain, muscle pain, mood swings, memory loss. Taking Lupron was the worst mistake I ever made! I'm still suffering from muscle pain, achey joints, stiffness, memory loss & can't lose any weight. My last shot was Nov.05 and still can't get any answers from any doctors. I will research Lupron and the manufacturer and do everything I can to help others that are going through this too. 09/19/06 F 31 6 months

4  Endometriosis (stage 3) Hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, mood swings, muscle pain (legs & lower back) , joint pain (knees), minimal bloating, emotional spurts, anxiety, & short-term memory loss I have suffered painful menstrual cycles since age 16. I have been on every birth control pill and narcotic pain medication out there, I just learned to deal with the pain (with the help of pain pills). My GYN always said that I had ovarian cyst. About 6 months ago the pain was so bad that I could not breathe and all I could do was lay in a ball on the floor where I fell from the excruciating pain. I went to my GYN the very next morning and with test/ultasounds the conclusion was that I had a large "chocolate cyst" on my left ovary and that he wanted to watch it over the next month with hopes of it going away on it's own with my next cycle. Well, I only made it 2 days after that before the pain was too much. I was in surgery 1 week later. When he got inside my left ovary was twisted and lodged in my pelvic bone, he could not do what was needed with laparoscopy, so on came the laparotomy. He had to remove my left ovary and found that I was in stage 3 of 4 endometriosis. It wen F 25 3 days

3  severe endo female organs begin to ache after first 5 shots, frequent, painful urinating, constipation big time, depression, memory loss, mood swings, acid reflux bothering again, weight gain, problems with my nervous system, easily overwhelmed & aggreviated, definate attitude change putting it mildly nothing works quite right. I took lupron for a year. During my first 3-4 months I really began to feel back to normal again. I had hot flashes, mood swings, stress but with regular exersise I kept all under control. i even lost the weight that having endo so bad caused. After that 5th month changes went from good to bad. Now 4 months later after I'm through with the shots and I am still having many of these problems. Periods have returned after almost 3 months though not at all regular. I'm praying to God that I return to normal and that my endo does not return. What I really want to know is exactly how long does it take for all side effects to disappear and if they are going to. Heres to trying to remain hopeful in the thick of it. F 30 1 years

2  Heavy Bleeding and fibroid tumors Weight gain, decreased libido, dry mouth, night sweats and hot flashes. The combination of lupron depot, hormones, increased iron and calcium has caused a flare up in psorisis that has been dormant for thirty years. My periods were extremely heavy with clotting. They lasted up to 10 days. My hemoglobin level was almost non-existent. I received my first shot on February 1, 2006 after an intense period. The shot promptly caused spotting for two weeks. Then the cycle from hell started and my blood count went from 7.7 to 6.6 in a matter of days. I almost had to have a blood transfusion. After a regimen of 1000 mg of iron and 1200 mg of calcium, my count is in the normal range, but I have had a constant period since March 9, 2006. I have now had my third shot of lupron depot, on August 2, 2006. Nothing has changed. The backaches and cramps are about on the same scale as having children, and I had 5, all natural. Weight is up, blood count is down and I now have to have a hysterectomy. I've not been pleased at all. The only thing it stopped was the flood every 21 days, now it is just a trickle all day, every day. F 52 6 months
