LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  endometriosis/ endo of the colon hot flashes, night sweats, mild mood swings I opted for the three-month dose(11.75mg) and am just finishing the full six-month treatment(the drug manufacturer does not recommend treatment to last over six-months, read the product insert). I haven't had a period the entire course of treatment. I haven't had the horrible cramps that I did which were always associated with bowel movements. I had blood in my stool every month just prior to my period starting, but haven't experienced any since beginning the treatment. It took about a month for the hot flashes to start. They were difficult to adjust to at first, but now I hardly notice them and don't have them as often. I did wake up with flashes and sweats, but these were not as severe as I expected. At the end of my treatment, I would say that I've had a positive experience with this drug. Not having a period and pain every month has been more of a blessing than I realized. I am nervous about my body adjusting its hormones now and hope that the mass on my colon is gone. Be F 28 6 months

My iron levels are at 7.3. I am doing well on the shot with the exception of the minor heat waves that take over my body several times a day. I am now experiencing joint pain, weird but I will ask my doctor about it. I have not been to cranky and moody which is good. F 41 45 days

4  Endometriosis hot flashes, head aches, body aches, loss of appetite, hair loss, nausea, fatigue, insomnia, mood swings, memory loss, homeostatic imbalance Lupron is a hard drug, but worth it. I just got my second shot and pressing through. The side effects are numerous but bearable compared to the endo pain. I have extensive endo and it caused me to have severe body and reproductive pain, seizures, breathing problems etc for over ten years. I have sene over 40 MDs. Adopting a Candida diet helps me manage the pain along with prayer, positive thinking, and wise planning. F 29 6 weeks

3  Endometriosis I have been reading these comments since i firsted started Lupron, I now am on my 4th injection. At first I couldnt disagree more with the negative comments I heard from person with similar conditions to mine; but the then about the 3rd injection everything changed. I have hot flashes and mood swings the entire time, but now...I have to take 72000 UI of vitamin D beacse my bones and teeth just throb, I cant sleep, my memory and cognitive functioning has decreased so that I feel like I cant be left alon to function by myself...I have had to make a to do list befor leaving the house..cut off water, turn off all 5 fans, get purse , lock the door...I am 25 years old...I have always been the "smart one" and now I need more assistance than a 80 year old woman. Somedays I wake up and I just cant remember what im supposed to do..laast night I put my laundry basket in the pantry??? Serioulsy the Dr says it will all pass as soon as I finish my shots. But I am beginning to think it F 25 4 months

4  Endometriosis Fatigue, night sweats, hot flashes I'm only about 3.5 weeks into the treatment but wanted to say that so far so good. I was worried after reading all the negative things people had to say, but the pain of endo (even after a laparoscopy) was just too much. The hot flashes are the worst and I feel very tired all the time, it is probably because the hot flashes wake me up at night so I don't sleep solid. I am due for another treament in a few days and plan to see it through the 6 months. I have not had a period since starting Lepron, only light spotting but nothing like usual and no pain from endo. That has been a welcome relief. F 38 28 days

Of course sex-now non existent also. High chlosterol & blood pressure also.  1  Endo Just let me say OH MY GOSH. I had previously taken Lupron when I was 25 for treatment of Endo after having surgery. This go around, my Gyno started me out with a 3 month injection! By the time I had to go back for my next 3 month injection, I thought that I needed to be in a mental hospital. I would start to cry and could not stop! The mood swings were horrible! I was mad at the world, and nothing could make me happy! All I wanted to do was sleep, because I felt so exhausted. I just hurt everywhere. I felt sorry for my children and my poor husband, I think that I could have killed him several times. The night sweats were awful, and I had to put fans everywhere! The people that work with me in a small law office started wearing jackets and keeping heaters in their office! I didn't gain any weight, I think that I sweated so much it helped. I will NEVER do it again! I'd rather have surgery. Needless to say, I did not take the 2nd injection, and my Gyno actually told me I needed to see a t I have not had my first period after coming off the Lupron, I'm waiting to see how that goes. I have also made an appt. with another Gyno, in another city to discuss other options! To anyone considering taking this, make sure that your docter will give you something for depression! Mine wouldn't, and this drug is dangerous! F 31 3 months

4  Endometriosis and ovarian cyst My side effects have been very mild as opposed to the relief of pain and getting the hell off of Vicodin. I have occasional headache, could be allergies, hot flashes and very minor fatigue, could be the heat, some forgetfullness, but I am super busy with 4 kids. I was very scared like most of you and after reading this message board did not want to have the shot at all. I am 3 weeks in to my first shot and I have had no weight gain, no major side effects and overall a whole lot of good days NOW. I would recommend this shot to anyone needing pain releif. It does help. Everyone needs to understand that it makes your body feel like it is in menopause and thus the side effects. I am going to keep up with this message board because the response from some people was scary. I think more people that had a good response should speak up. F 35 21 days

2  Endo, Cysts I had every side effect listed. Rare and Common. The first time in 10 years, I have been without pain. However, I would not do it again if I had it to do over. I read this site before I started, but I thought it would be worth it to be pain free. BEWARE:This stuff effects your entire body,(it is not just Hot flashes). Read as much as you can, and then read more before you try this medicine. After I finished my 6th shot I thought I was dying, My body's immune system turned against itself and for 2 weeks I could not get out of bed, eat, or sleep. Vicoden and Advil would not stop my bone, joint pain. I felt like I was 80. It is now 3 months later, and my bones still hurt, but my sex drive returned and my memory, so it seems to be leaving my body. Periods are back. My doctor says TTC when they return to normal. I hope to get myself totaaly back in shape and loose the 30 lbs I gained on it and to get healthy. I now have a whole new outlook on life from this Drug. I now know, what it will be like to get old, and I am going to take be F 30 6 months

4  endo and awful cramps I am happy to say that my face has cleared up, not bloated, and I have lost weight. I will say too that my back does hurt, hot flashes, night sweats, and can't sleep. But that is ok - because I love not being bloated and feeling like I've lost 10 lbs. but that could be due to taking Zoloft. I was very short w/ my 6 yr old son at first so I started taking Zoloft and I feel good except for the back pain. I am scared when I get my next shot July 25th 2007 that awful things will start happening since I've read this site. I only take 2 shots in a 6 mn. period. 1st shot was April 25th. Can someone email me at [email protected] if you are scared of taking another shot. so far so good, just scared to get the next shot. F 36 2 months

4  uterine fibroids I went on the Lupron to shrink my fibroids before surgery. I was 29, and very nervous about what it was going to do to my body and how I would react to menopause. Surprisingly, I was more stable with it than I was going through my horrific periods each month! I had the normal side effects, lowered sex drive, hot flashes, etc. - but nothing that was overwhelming or made me think I couldn't handle it. In the end, having 4 months of shots, the fibroids hadn't shrunk enough to continue taking it. So my dr. proceeded with the myomectomy and removed 2 large fibroids - 1 was 12 cm, the other 7.5cm. Three months later, I was pregnant with our first child and and am preparing for my c-section in a few weeks. Even though the Lupron didn't shrink my fibroids a lot, I don't regret taking it in the slightest. F 30 4 months

2  Endometriosis Hot flashes, moodiness, weight loss (to the extreme), lack of interest in sex, vaginal dryness and constant fatigue. I received 6month worth of Lupron shots in 2005, I had already had 2 laparoscopies that didn't help. I researched the Lupron and read all the positives and the negatives. I decided it was important to weigh the options, regretably...I chose the Lupron. While I was taking it, I did have mood swings and severe hot flashes but other than that, it alieviated the pain. I thought this really was a miracle drug and couldn't understand what all the fussing was about, sure there were side effect but at least I was out of bed. It took a while to really show it's ugly side effects. Since that summer of 2005, I have had another laperoscopy, bladder surgery for Intersitial Cystitis, I am awaiting a colonoscopy to determine if I have IBS, I have extreme arthritis like symptoms in my hips (especially when the weather takes a turn for the worse) and chronic pelvic pain. I am almost 30 years old and most 90 years old clients (I am a geriatric social worker) could run circles around me. I blame a lot of F 29 7 months

3  Large uterine fibroid- pidaua Cramping but no period, retaining water, muscle and joint soreness, weight gain, feeling nausous I am going to have my 3rd Lupron shot tomorrow. I have found that after my 2nd shot I started to gain weight- 12 pounds in less than a month. I've been working out, doing yoga and cut my food intake- yet the weight keeps piling on. It is mostly in my lower abdomen, but my clothes fit looser (yet my breasts are getting fuller and a bit more painful). I noticed that working out is making my muscles bulk up faster, almost like being on a steroid. I am very tired 4-5 times out of the week and I only get a good nights sleep once a week or so. I get dizzy, retain water and generally feel like I am PMSing almost every day(cramps, tired etc...) I used to only get like this 3 days out of the month, now I only feel relief 3 days out of the month. I can't wait to be done with it and get my surgery. I know it is only temporary but it's getting harder now. Oh yeah.. and I have been getting gray hair like crazy. F 37 2 months

3  Large Uterine Fibroid, anemia Minor bleeding and mild headache. I have not really noticed any symptoms but it has been less than one week since receiving the first injection. I am hoping for decrease in the size of fibroid to avoid surgery or at least postpone it for a while. Minor bleeding started 4 days after receiving the injection on 6/8/207. I will report back with an update prior to next injection. F 48 6 days

2  Endo Some hair loss, weight gain, swollen hands and feet to the point I can't remove rings and shoes are very tight, some nights my feet hurt so bad I can't sleep, eyes feel puffy like I had been crying, hot flashes. I'm due for the second shot this week and don't think I will continue. The endo pain is gone for about a week now but the side effects aren't worth it. I'm used to the pain and would rather deal with that. F 50 1 months

4  sever endo/ovarian cysts No period, severe hotflashes, weight loss, slight hair loss, headaches, severe mood swings, depression, short-term memory loss I had surgury in October '06 to remove a 10cm cyst, and they found the Endo. I started the lupron immediatly after recevering from surgery, my Dr. didn't really give me a choice. I never had any bleeding while on the shot. There were so many side effects from the Lupron, but the pain was a lot less severe, although I am really not sure that all those side effects were worth it. I stopped the shot after 6 months, and I am now 1 month off of it, and in tons of pain all the time, I can't sleep, and the pain greatly effects my daily life and work. I am now on birth control and take it continuosly so still have no period. Pain- wise I really liked what the Lupron did for me, but the side effects can be rough. I am definatly in a lot more pain just being on birth control and i do have a few cysts growing bigger being off the Lupron. It scares me just thinking about getting a period, because of the pain and cysts growing. My Dr said I will probably have to have another surgery this year. Ever F 21 6 days

4  Endometriosis Severe mood swings, muscle and joint pains, migraines, dizziness, lightheadedness, hotflashes my first 6 month treatment with lupron in 04 wasn't a piece of cake or anything.. the hotflashes were pretty bad and the change in mental state, from what i remember, weren't too much fun either. the relief of pain with period was GREAT until just a few months ago.. so I had over a year of Almost pain free periods! HOWEREVER I am due to have my SECOND injection on monday the 11th (June 07) and i have been out of work 90% of the time since i had the first one in May on the 14th. I have had Severe pain in my hips, legs, back, well.. pretty much everywhere as far as joints and muscles. also i had heavy bleeding for the first week. followed by Extreme lightheadedness and dizzy spells. one day this last week i actually had trouble seeing.. almost double vision that lasted until the afternoon. I have to say it has been a much different experience this time so far, but i am going to stick with it and hope it gets better unless my doctor says otherwise. I was 21 when i got the first 6 month F 23 1 months
