LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Weight gain, mood swings I took two shots that lasted six months and the side affects have been pretty minimal. I have had mild hot flashes and tend to get hotter easier. My husband seems to think I have mood swings, my doctor prescribed lexapro when I got my first shot to help with the mood swings. The side affect I dislike the most is the weight gain. I have put on anywhere between 10-15 pounds but most seems to have come on after the second shot in September. I would suggest keeping a workout schedule to try to keep weight gain to a minimum from the beginning. I have been trying to lose weight while on the shot and nothing seems to give. Overall I would say the Lupron shot has worked very well, I can live with a little extra weight. F 27 6 months

1  Severe Endometriosis Extreme hot flashes & night sweats, Mood swings, Major weight loss, Nausea, Additional pains, Severe migranes, Loss of sleep, & energy. I am a 21 year old female who has been battling a severe case of endometriosis for the past 2 years, I have had 2 surgeries....the first one my OB/GYN doc. removed a dermoid cyst off my L ovary. The 2nd surgery 3 months later they removed the whole L ovary due to the dermoid cyst growing back so quickly. I was then given nothing but PAIN KILLERS! So I asked my doctor if there was any other form of medication that he could give me to subside these excruciating pains, he told me not at the moment. A few days later I was rushed into the ER & demanded a hysterectomy because these pains were now interrupting and taking over my day to day life. The OB doctor in the ER told me briefly about the lupron shot and told me that it would be my best solution until I wanted to conceive which I do not plan on for aprox. 4 years from now. Thats 1 shot EVERY 3 MONTHS!! I took the shot, it was injected in my lower R back. About 2 weeks later my life turned 5x more miserable than it was before the shot was given. Hot flashes were extreme! Mood swings were rediculous! Appetite changes led to major weight loss! And to top it off I lost my job because I had to call in sick multiple days due to the nausea & extra pains the shot brought upon me! I chose to NOT take the shot anymore since it did not help my situation one bit, in fact just made things worse, & here I am 5 1/2 months after my 1st shot and still have not had a period, still have mood swings & worst of all...HOT FLASHES F 21 90 days

2  Severe endometriosis Mood swings, great depression, nausea, hot flashes, back pain, short term memory lost, excessive bleeding, abdomen pain, feel like passing out, upset stomach. After I had my first and surgery which was a diagnostic lap, I was put on lupron depot 3.75 mg a month! I thought I was dying, I was angry for no reason and irritable for every little thing. I was going through so many pre-menopause like symptoms. It made me want a hysterectomy ,and your talking to a person who was and dreams of having children. I'm on my fourth one now and can say I finally stopped bleeding of 1.5 months and I stool have discharge of light bleeding. I get so depressed I think life is so horrible why am I here? I even asked my doctor for a hysterectomy, and I'm 24 no kids no husband. I just keep thinking when does the pain ever end. I can barely have sex cause of the endo being in my nerves. Iupron works for some and not for others.. F 24 4 months

2  Large fibroid Tired all day, insomnia, terrible mood swings and road rage, hot flashes that feel like you are being microwaved and hungry all the time. Weight gain. I just took my second shot last week and had to get anti anxiety pills as well to help curb the crazy side effects. After to first shot I could hardly stay awake during the day. About 2:00 every day I had to take a nap. After Bout 3 weeks the insomnia and complete crazyness kicks in. I'm afraid I might say or do something at work that can get me in trouble and I snap at just about everything. I went ahead and told my doctor there is no way I can do a third shot and scheduled the surgery for a little over a month from now. Hopefully the softball size tumor has shrunk and this crazy drug did what it is supposed to do. I would only recommend this drug as a last resort. I see people taking this drug to get pregnant and I think you are insane. Go adopt a kid there are plenty out there that need good homes. I did. F 32 2 months

1  Uterine Fibroids I experience severe hot flashes every 40 min and night sweats just as frequent with bouts of weakness and fatique. Sever pain and limited movement in my right arm and shoulder. Mood swings, periods of anger and confusion. This is not a drug I would recommend. The side effects are too horrific. I could only tolerate it for three months and I had my hysterectomy so that I could get off of the shot. Nasty experience. I was almost driven insane. I refused to take a shot in October, instead I had the surgery, but I still suffer from pain and stiffness in my right arm and shoulder with limited movement. I am barely able to dress myself, comb my hair, use the bathroom, etc. I am hoping things will get back to normal soon, F 50 3 months

1  suspected endometriosis hip joint pain, worsening of pelvic pain I have had severe, constant lower left quadrant pelvic pain for the last 3 months and prior to this, the pain was sporadic for 3.5 yrs. I can no longer stand or walk for any distance and am taking hyrdromorphone for the pain (6 times stronger than morhpine). My gyno is guessing at endometriosis, but doesn't think this is what I have because the pain is constant and doesn't just come and go with my period. I have had nausea, bloating and tiredness since this started and am now completely sedentary due to the constant pain. I used to be a marathon runner before this started and have gained 40 lbs. over 3 years because I am not moving at all. Has anyone else had this type of severe, constant pain that turned out to be endo? I have had lots of CT's and ultrasounds, but am still waiting for an MRI and surgery. I got a shot of lupron 3 days ago (1 month dose) and I'm waiting to see if the pain dissipates in 2 weeks once the initial flare is done. I would love to hear from anyone else who has had the same type of pain or symptom history that turned out to be endo. My doctor has ruled out gastro and urinary problems, but I also have interstitial cystitis (painful bladder syndrome) which may or may not be related to my chronic pelvic pain. F 42 3 days

3  Endo 4 hot flashes/night sweats I took three doses of Lupron (1 per month), as recommended by my doctor. Had the needle in my hip - no pain at all. After I got the hot flashes/night sweats under control with the add back therapy, it was great. (those night sweats made life miserable - no sleep) Only problem...after five months, my period came back - still causing pain. My 'freedom' was short lived. F 47 3 months

1  not taking yet I just have a question..... I have had my tubes tied, so no chances of any more babies. I have pretty bad endo and it is affecting my bowels. My doc wants to do laproscopy and then put me on lupron, but the lupson sounds horrifying. If I can't have kids anyway, why should I go through all of that? Why not just have complete hysterectomy?  4  Endo Hot Flashes, Night sweats, Bone pain, Weakness, Headaches, Mood swings. Monday 8/22 was my last shot for my first full year of being on lupron. A year ago on the 22nd I was given two options hysterectomy or the last hormone treat which was lupron, I was worried after reading/researchig this drug last year I was not going to give this a try. I'm so glad I did! I hadn't had any peirods in the full year that I was taken the shots. I had no pain once I had my appendix removed(covered in endo) Granted its not all great, Side effects were plain crappy. But overall it was way worth it. I've been off lupron less than a week and today I started my period already, I go to doctor on monday to talk about my options. Today i'm right back where I was a year ago, Bent over in pain. Bleeding out. To say the least I will be going back on lupron as soon as the doctor allows it, side effects are worth it. F 19 1 years

2  HIGHEST STAGE OF ENDOMETRIOSIS Intense hot flashes, extreme mood swings and easily irritated. Mild acne, bloating, fatigue, back pain, sick stomach, one period while in the middle of my shots, dizziness and feeling weak. I don't really think this shot has helped. I'm 21 and had my left ovary removed in Jan. due to endometriosis. My doctor put me on these shots to try and keep it from coming back. i still have the exact same pain i had before my surgery and my ovary isn't even there anymore. the hot flashes are ridiculous. This has been a rough 6 months, not sure if i would do it again. took my last shot over a month ago, and the side-effects have not went away... i feel like it will never end. F 21 6 months

5  Endometriosis insomnia, small weight gain, about 1 hot flash a day-if that. So glad I trusted my doctor about taking this! I suffered with absolutely horrible pain for almost a year. Had surgery, found endometriosis, then was put on the Lupron injections and also Aygestin to minimize the hotflashes, etc. I have had 4 injections, I have been pain free since after the first 2 weeks of the 1st shot! I will take the tossing and turning at night and a little weight gain to be pain free! It's just wonderful! F 28 6 months

3  Endometriosis Extreme Pain, Mood Swings, Night Sweats I am writing this not to scare anyone away from Lupron, but to help explain things that after reading many comments I still did not understand. Just remember that every person is different and just because this was my experience doesn't mean that everyperson has the same experience. It has to be your decision. I am on the one injection every 3 months for 6 months treatment. 4 weeks ago I was in very little pain for a couple of days a month. The pain never kept me from work or interferred with my life. In the last 4 weeks I have had nothing but constant horrible pain. I have spent more time curled up in the fetal position than not. I have lost 2 weeks of work because of the pain. The doctor tells you there might be an increase in pain, but they never tell you that you will need narcotic pain killers just to keep the pain at a tolerable level. The night sweats although not comfortable are manageable. There are little tricks I have learned from others that help make them better. There are no words to explain the mood swings and depression I feel. In less than a minute I can go from being on top of the world to the most angry person you have ever seen. Depression is not easy either. Every morning I wake up dreading the things in life I use to enjoy. I lay in bed and cry for hours, just wishing it would all go away. F 32 4 weeks

5  Endometriosis some weight gain, hot flashes & night sweats I read a lot of negative reviews about lupron, but decided to trust my doctor. I'm so glad I did! I've been on lupron for 3 months now and have been pain free ever since. I had 1 episode of break-through bleeding when I first started, but that is typical I'm told. I've had night sweats and hot flashes, but those have tapered off. I have gained some weight, but for me, being able to go pain free is worth the trade off. F 26 3 months

3  Endometriosis/Infertility hot flashes, night sweats, headaches, hip joint pain, extreme fatigue, depression (although I was already prone to this) I had a laparoscopy February of this year. My doctor diagnosed me with stage 3/4 endometriosis. I always had painful periods and other issues that make so much sense now. My doctor put me on lupon depot for AT LEAST 6 months. I got my first shot in the beginning of March and was doing pretty well, until about the 3rd week. I started getting hot flashes and I couldn't sleep because I was so hot all the time and then I started to get migraines. So, I was put on add-back therapy, which I was skeptical about. But it really did seem to help with my original side effects. I am now starting to get joint pain in my right hip and I am extremely tired all the time...I can't seem to make it past 8:30 or 9. I have also had mood swings where I go from being really depressed to being just fine. I am just hoping that I am only on this for 6 months and am able to TTC soon after that. F 28 6 months
