LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  prostate cancer Hot Flashes, Fatigue, Dependency(ie: when I am near the end of my 4 month cycle, my side effects are worse.) Neck & back pain, impotency(complete) Hot flashes. I feel terrible all over. Injection every 4 months. My doctor tells me it is up to me as to when I may stop the injections. Most take for only 3-5 years and if the cancer comes back...what then? Maybe some other treatments may work. I would like to know more about tistical removal. Seems to make more sense to me. M 49 3 years

4  UTERINE FIBROIDS AND OVARIAN CYSTS INCREASED HOTFLASHES, ADDITIONAL PERIODS AND RIGHT SIDED OVARIAN CRAMPING. I BEGAN LUPRON DEPOT 1/6/05 AND SECOND SHOT 2/4/05. I HAVE HAD PERIMENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS FOR 10 YEARS AND DIBILITATING PERIODS FOR 10 YEARS. BECAUSE OF THE PERIODS IT SEEMS THAT A MYRIAD OF OTHER BODILY DYSFUNCTIONS ARE RELATED....SPANNNING OVER 10 YEARS AND WORSE THE LAST 5 YEARS. MANY, MANY MANY DOCTORS LATER I AM LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE STUBBLED ACROSS THE DOCTOR WHO IS FINALLY HELPING ME. AFTER THE 3 MONTHS OF SHOTS A HYSTERECTOMY IS LIKELY. THE LUPRON HAS HEIGHTENED MY ALREADY PERIMENOPAUSAL SYMPTOMS, BUT I AM HANDLING THEM, BECAUSE I WANT MY LIFE BACK. NO OTHER DOCTOR HAS EVER MENTIONED, NOR OFFERED ME OPTIONS.....JUST IBUPROFIN AND ONE TIME AN ANTIDEPRESSANT. I AM NOT A MARTYRE AND NOR DO I RELISH THE IDEA OF FEELING LIKE AN ANIMAL CAUGHT IN A TRAP. I AM REALISTIC THAT THERE MEY BE LONG TERM SIDE EFFECTS, BUT I AM WILLING TO TAKE THIS CHANCE. THANK YOU F 45 2 months

3  Endo Major headaches, uncontrollable crying, bouts of rage and anger, short temper, loss of sex drive and all around grumpyness The few good things I can say about the shot is that I don't hurt. I had a lap almost a year ago and the pain came back a few months after so my doctor suggested the Lupron shot. I putoff taking it for 6 months and finally did. I am on week three. I am hoping that things will get better. I hate feeling like I am losing my mind and my poor husband doens't know what to do. F 29 3 weeks

3  Endo I was surprised to see that so many women have 'issues' with memory. I was given my first shot of a 6 month therapy one week ago, and probably 2 days after I started to feel a little forgetful... So far that's the extent of it!! I am going to remain positive about this situation I'm in...The power of persuasion when reading about other women's side effects I believe can be damaging in and of itself. I'm leaving this website thankful for the warnings (and maybe a little scared too) I guess I will just wait and see what happens F 33 7 days

4  Endometriosis While most side effects are/were pretty mild I experienced: Trouble sleeping (1st month) Mood swings (Entire time of treatment and after) Irritability (Entire time of treatment and after) Mild hot flashes (Entire time of treatment and after) Back/Bone pain (After treatment) Unexplained bruising (Unsure if this was from the shot) Non stop spotting/bleeding (This went on for months) Slight Endo pain (Month 4) Slight memory loss (Begining of treatment) I was scheduled to complete a 12 month course of the Lupron Depot injection. Due to health insurance reasons I only completed 6 months of treatment. At the current time I am not on the shot and I am 1 month out of treatment (meaning I got my last injection 4 months ago). I am unsure exactly how the drug has affected my Endo but I can say most of the pain has subsided. The most uncomfortable thing that I have experienced with this injection was the bleeding. It was extremely heavy at times and seemed non stop. The bleeding/spotting is hard to determine when and how long it will last. That was the WORST part of my ordeal. While after treatment I am still experiencing some of these side effects. The back/bone pain has just started and it is painful. My mood swings and irritability seem to be increasing as the days pass. Considering I am a woman who is always cold, the hot flashes are tolerable. I am a 25 year old woman who at the current time does not any have children. This drug hopefully will work in my favor for when I am ready to have a child or two. For those where a hysterectomy is not an option, I would recommend this product to another person. I would also caution them about the possible side effects. F 25 6 months

1  endometriosis i am in my third month of lupron therapy. the side effects are awful! i have had a headache every day since initiating treatment (migraine for the first 3 weeks); hot flashes are incredible; fever and chills; mood swings and depression are hard to deal with for me and people around me; last but definitely not least is the fatigue, for the first month, the only time i was awake for any length of time was when i was at work (missed a few days) and it hasn't improved all that much, i still sleep way too much, don't get things done that i should or had planned on because i am too tired to get out of bed or just don't have the energy. it has been next to impossible to lead a normal and happy life when you are either sleeping or feel like crying because of all the side effects (despite being on a small dose of estrace)!!! i am a 25year old registered nurse. i have been dealing with the symptoms of endo for at least 10 years. i've had 3 laporoscopies, tried depot-provera, and have just taken my third injection of a 6 month course of lupron and really don't think that i will continue. the pain from endo is one thing but i could deal with that much more than with the side effects from the lupron, at least i still felt human!!!!  4  Endometriosis Hot Flashes, Night sweats, headaches, fatigue, irratibility, anxiety I posted at 1 month, really disappointed. I am now 4 months in and most side effects have diminished other than the hot flashes. It has helped tremendously with the pain. Those of you in early stages, if you can bear with it, it may improve. The hot flashes are inconvenient but its worth it F 34 4 months

1  Suspected Endometriosis I was given a 3 month Lupron Depot injection on 12/28/04. The first 5 days the only side effects I had was soreness at the injection site, mild headache, and some difficulty falling asleep. From day 6 on, I have had night sweats, hair is falling out, blurred vision, extreme thirst (I drink 12 glasses of water a day), very painful backache, and a severe headache that never leaves me. That is not the worst part, I am only able to sleep 2-4 hours a night. From day 6 - 26, I slept only 2 hours a night. Now I am taking Fioricet (prescription pain reliever and sedative) several times a day for my severe headaches, so now I can sleep up to 4.5 hours. I almost drove my car off the road, because I could not keep my eyes open during my second week. When I called my doctor to tell him I couldn't sleep and the Ambien 10mg he called in for me doesn't help me sleep -- he said all his other patients have NO side effects and there was nothing he could do. I have since switched doctor's, but since I was given the 3 month shot it looks like I am going to suffer for 2 more months. I also had my period for 12 days. I would never recommend Lupron Depot to anyome. F 32 1 months

1  Severe Endometriosis uncontrollable crying spells, mood swings, forgetfulness, insomnia I have only received my first injection and it has been pure hell. I am either crying, or very mean. I would rather go through a hysterectomy than put my husband and children through the hell of the past few weeks. I would like to hear from others who have experienced problems, as I am considering not continuing with the F 35

1  endometriosis insommnia, bleeding, severe mood swings, headaches, hot flashes, and dizzy spells I am not sure if taking this drug is worth it. The side effects especially the mood swings are harsh. The intense pain that I felt before has subsided but has been replaced with sleepless nights and days filled with depression. I feel as though I am 24 going on 60. What worries me is that who knows if the shot is even helping, it just seems to be prolonging the inevitable, a hysterectomy. I just count my blessings that I somehow carried my baby to term. F 24 2 months

4  Stage IV Endometriosis Broke out in a rash the first couple of days after injection that continues to flare up a little. I experienced bleeding not even fourteen days after my first period/injection but that has subsided now. My bones are aching a little but not sure if the cold weather isn't to blame for that. No hot flashes or mood swings yet. F 31 18 days

1  Endo, PCOS, Fibroids I am now one week post my 2nd treatment. Headaches are severe. Mood Swings are severe. Temp extremes, hot flashes, and overall fatigue are severe. I was better before this medicine than I am after it, even with severe endo pain and bleeding. The side effects do not merit the possible help from this drug in my opinion. I spent yesterday in the hospital for sever headache with vomiting. This has been present since the Lupron. F 27 6 weeks
