LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Anemia from large fibroids Injection site quite sore a few days. Another period at 2nd week after shot. Some moodiness. A few mild hot flashes to date. I started taking iron supplements w/ vitamin C about a month before the Lupron. I am just about 1 month in after shot. My doc went with the 22.5 mg for 3 months pre-hysterectomy. My doctor has used this for at least 10 years with success for my condition. Gave me much info to recommend it. I would have needed a blood transfusion to have surgery owing to my severe anemia and low red blood cell count from heavy bleeding. I have had a few side effects as listed, but overall I feel much, much better now that my bloodwork is near normal. Only bummer was I was just finishing my period when I got the shot, and a week after injection started another. Not as bad as a normal period, but lasted 7-8 days. Since no cycle. Sometimes I feel a little short tempered, but no where near as bad as when severely anemic. I was exhausted all the time before, and very short fused. I'll report again should anything change, but if I were nearer to done, I'd have made this rating a 5. I am only doing a 4 as I ha F 42 3 months

4  Severe Endometriosis, Jan.2008 1st shot-sudden exhaustion & very rapid heart palpitation. 2nd shot-terrible daily headaches for 2 wks. The shot area was very Painful. I had to move a lot so my shot side doesn't become stiff. After surgery, I was started on the shots. By the 3rd shot, I was having very sharp sudden pains from the endo. It's bearable & something I've accepted that I will always have since I'm severely scarred inside. Still have the hot flashes, no longer freeze at nights, sweat a lot. I'm taking Calcium to help delay the irreversible osteosporosis from the shot. In Oct.,I'll know if the depo shots worked on the endo. F 42 3 months

4  Endometriosis It has been 6 weeks since my first shot (I am on the higher dose that lasts for 3 months). I was scared as I know this drug has many side effects - but felt I had no choice but to try it, I was so miserable. The first week I was nauseated, light headed, etc. That passed. I have not had any trouble falling asleep - went through a short period of fatigue but am ok now. A few headaches here and there. Now the only side effect I am really feeling is joint pain. I am on the add back therapy - I wear an estrogen patch and replace it weekly. I am also taking a calcium supplement twice a day - Adora calcium chews. So far, this has been the best pain management for my endo. Look into your prescription drug program. At a retail pharmacy, this medecine would have cost me $285 AFTER insurance paid its part. But because I have a mail order option - it was only $35 through Medco/Acredo. Its worth the phone call to the number on the back of your insurance card! F 33 42 days

1  Severe Endometriosis (15 years) Hot flashes, hair loss, insomnia, all the ones everyone else is having. I had a bad experience with Lupron and because of that I would not recommend. I took the shot one time and the next day my hands were swelling and itchy, then broke out in hives all over my arms, legs, buttocks so went to the doctor three times after that and they determined I was allergic. Sent me to a dermatologist and guess what, I have eaten wheat all my life, but now I am allergic to wheat and all because of this damn shot. Now every single time I eat something with wheat, I break out on my arms, feet, legs, neck, it is awful. After going thru several laps, Depo Provera injections, and more laps, and 15 years difference between my children (lucky to have had the 2nd) and this lupron injection, I finally was given a complete hysterectomy and have never felt better.  3  no babbies Spotting, mood swings, depression, bones in knees back ankles crack constantly. Ive been on it for a year this will be my last shot because of the amount of pain in my bones in my knees. Other then that I've enjoyed not getting my period i will miss being on it for that reason.  1  Fibroids Horrible Muscle and Joint pain, doc now saying he believes i may have rhumetoid arthritis from taking the depot lupron. I never had bone or joint problems before, from a scale of 1-10 the pain everyday is a 8, i would tell anyone to not take depot lupron as it has torn my body up terrible and no shrinkage of the fibroid tumors. The pain i carry in my body now and headaches are horrific. I took two shots and each shot last three months, I wish i would have not taken this depot lupron F 49 2 months

1  endometriosis constant headache, muscle/joint pain, bone loss, extreme hotflashes, MEMORY LOSS, confusion, chronic fatigue, whole body weakness - unable to walk, chest pain, heart palputations. This drug ruins lives. i was promised a hysterectomy after a taking an additional 9 months of lupron knowing i had been hospitalized many times in the past because of complications. then the doctor backed out after i completed treatment. he knew how agaist this drug i was and how i still had long-term effects from a 6 month treatment 6 years prior. i will never understand how prescribing a temporary fix such as this will benefit an Endo patient since the effects can last a life-time!  4  Large Fibroids I just got the 1st injection and having a little discomfort. I'm not experiencing nothing unbearable. After having periods that last 3 weeks and severe pain anything is worth a try. My physician is trying to shrink tumors before surgery in 3 months. F 41 1 days

1  Endometriosis started in 2000 for 6 mos. As soon as I got the first shot, I was in so much pain, by the 3rd I was in the ER, I had kidney stones. THey haven't stopped since, I also get infections, kidney, UTI and the past 6 mos, I found out I have a growth on my thyoid, Tooth infection, ear infection, 5 kidney infections, MRSA infection, the flu, and now I have strep throat. While I don't think that Lupron caused all the infections, I DO feel that it caused something in my body to happen to make me form the stones I've been passing, and to my immune system. Since taking the last set of Lupron, I just got continually sicker as time went by, with no answers. My PCP doesn't like Lupron and wouldn't use it. I also have osteopenia, fibro, myofacial syndrom, and bone pain. F 41 6 months

3  Endo Migraines, hot flashes, night sweats I had my first injection 2 weeks ago. Since then I have had 2 major migraines, one ending me up in the ER. I had never had a migraine before. I am on the 6 month treatment and I'm not sure I can make my self go back next month. Hot flashes aren't bad, funny for my 26 year old body that's always cold to experience. Night sweats are tolerable, just have to get used to waking up dripping wet. F 26 2 weeks

3  Endo Hot flashes, Night sweats, irritable and now on my 31st hour of no sleep. I read the comments before I took the injection. I swore if it worked, I would post. I've been on it sense the end of Feb 08'. I am VERY dizzy alot, tachycardia 3 times but nothing major, night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, exhaustion and the pain has started again. The symptoms, for me, are tolerable. Its more the amount of symptoms I am experiencing that makes it SO annoying. Washing the floors at 10pm and folding laundry at 3am was not how I intended to spend the next 6 months...Will comment again after second injection. F 30 2 months

4  uterine fibroids hot flashes, night sweats, acne as bad as the teenage years on cheeks and forehead, wild mood swings, loss of sex drive Fibroids shrank (uterus was 8 cm smaller after 4 months)and overall, more comfortable and less "bloated" feeling; didn't have the bleeding ~10 days after the first round (as MD warned) and had NO real period since starting (minimal spotting on a few occasions). Exercise helped mood swings, but triggered hot flashes? (Anyone else with this problem!?) I want my sex drive back, but I feel so much better, the drug was worth the side effects... hopefully will be back to normal in a few months? F 28 4 months

2  Fibroid-pidaua This is an update- see my posts before / Pidaua concerning the side effects I have lost a majority of the weight and feel normal again. There are a few lasting side affects- like abnormal period (longer cycle one month, shorter the next but the bleeding is back to normal- thank goodness). No problems with sexual function and I don't have any of the hot flashes or painful joints that I had before. However, it took until now (my last shot was in June 07) 9 months, to feel normal again.  2  uterine fibroids I just got my 3rd injection last week. I've had hot flashes, night sweats, irritability, waking up continually throughout the night. All of these are annoying, but tolerable....I expected this. What is scaring me is that I cannot think clearly, I have extreme memory loss....I am having to write myself reminders for the most basic of tasks. I'm no longer smart....I'm rather dim-witted. I'm worried that if my cognitive deficits get any worse, that I won't be able to function at my job. I'm terrified that I won't return to my old self. I hope I haven't made a huge mistake in opting to take this stuff. Oh yeah, some anxiety too. It's difficult to decide what to put for a rating as I don't yet know if it's been effective in shrinking my fibroids....I also don't know if I'll get my mind back completely! F 38 3 months

5  Endometriosis Anxiety, irritability, I actually got pregnant. I had a lap for severe Endo on 2/4/08. One tube was completely blocked and the doc said I had a 10% chance of getting pregnant the normal way. The plan was do do Lupron for 6 months then go see a fertility specialisat. I started my period on 2/15/08 and recieved my first of 6 shots on 2/29/08. I kept reading about this massive period about 8 days after the first shot. I never got that. I was worried so I took a pregnancy test and it was positive. It has been a very tough two weeks because i didnt know what the shot could do to a fetus. Anyways, I didnt really have any issues with the shot itself. I was on Premarin for hot flashes so I never got one. I was really irritable and had a lot of anxiety. If you are planning on getting this shot, just get it at the end of your cycle. Like when you are on your period. I got pregnant and got my shot within a few days of each other. If you are dealing with endo and just got a laparoscopy, give yourself a few cycles before you start t F 31 1 months

2  Endo Severe depression, anxiety, really severe hot flashes (now that I think about it, everything seems to be on the severe end)insomnia(can't remember the last time I slept through the night),all over muscle and joint pain, increased appitite, weight gain of 17 lbs almost all in my stomach area(have always been small and now weigh the most I ever have!),loss of breast tissue(went from a C to a large A, I started taking this after surgery and an endo ablation because I was desperate to get rid of the pain but it really never fully went away while on the Lupron. Now it's been 4 mons since the med should have worn off and I'm still experiencing the side effects. The only positive is that I haven't had a period in 10 mons!! F 30 6 months

3  Severe/Stage 4 Endometriosis Major depression, Night Sweats, Terrible Insomnia, Vomiting in the mornings, Restless legs and arms, Memory loss When my specialist realized how severe my Endo was through laparoscopy, he closed me back up and told me he would not operate to remove the endo until I had take 3 months of Lupron shots (to shrink and possibly dry up the endo lesions). I had endo all over the inside of my abdomen, causing near kidney failure on one side.) I was hospitalized for 7 days to repair my kidney and then had to wait for 3 months (while on Lupron) to have my final surgery. During that time was one of the most miserable times of my life. I vomited almost every morning (it causes morning sickness) and I absolutely could not sleep at night, no matter how tired I was. I would sit up and read all night and cry because I was depressed and exhausted. I finally called my doctor and they prescribed something called BellaDonna (I think it was a mixture of a sleeping aid and BellaDonna, a natural herb, used for relaxtion) It helped a little bit. I also had a severe case of restless legs. I felt like I needed to g F 30 3 months
