LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Endometriosis ALOT of hot flashes, trouble sleeping, weight gain, dry mouth, moody, low sex drive (I just got my 5th shot) I thought taking this was going to be the scariest thing when I heard it was "medical menopause" and I am only 22 years old...but this has really helped my pain. I have times when I want to go crazy and scream cause I get so moody, but all in all it has helped the pain and it is preserving my fertility!!!! Thats what I cared most about, having babies!  1  Stage IV Endo Severe arthralgias, and general aches and pains, hot flushes, lost 30 lbs, memory loss, no libido I would not recommend this therapy for anyone, my joint pain has not resolved (some days I can barely walk) my last dose was more than 3 years ago. I had no prior history of joint pain, no family history of joint pain. F 40 5 months

4  Endo Hot flashes, insomnia, weight gain, extremely moody, depressed This is my 2nd post. I am coming up on my 4th injection of Lupron. The pain is almost COMPLETELY gone, I can't believe it. I never thought I would be pain free....ever. I have hot flashes during the day now and still having them at night. NO sex drive, poor hubby is having trouble adjusting...I wonder if it will ever come back...the weight gain is what I;m having trouble adjusting to. I work out 3-4 days a week and watch my diet but have watched my weight/body fat % increase each month. 3 more injections to go....... F 29 3 months

4  Adenomyosis, ovarian cysts I reported after 2 shots and now I'm in my 3rd week after my 3rd monthly shot. The hot flashes have gotten alot worse and then afterwards I get very cold most of the time. I'm not sure how this is going to affect me when the heat and humidity of summer get here. Dr. still hasn't tested me to see if the cysts are shrinking so I can't comment there. I have slight memory loss, and night sweats which have gotten worse this month too. My heavy daily bleeding stopped the 2nd week after the first shot after getting worse the 1st week. If I find out the cysts have shrunk I would say it's worth the side effects I'm having.  4  Endometriosis Headches all the time, nauseas,My Eyes are puffy when I wake up with lines underneathe past three days.I sleep alot very fatigue. Dry skin on my face. Depression. I rated this based on what I took the lupron for and it has helped my pain on the otherhand symtoms I did not want but I know you have to weigh the pros and cons for long term... I have severe endo .. no tubes and one ovarie and of coarse my uterus. I have only had two shots and suppose to be going for my third dose tommorrow but waiting for my doctor to call back to let me know if we will proceed with the third shot due to my eyes . They feel like someone punched me. Very sore.I do sleep at night , The doctor gave me pain meds for headaches. I feel run down.Seem to have lost a little weight nothing to jump up and down about. But at least no weight gain...But overall my pain that I was having lower back is gone so that is good it worked so far on that part and periods well I did spot last month nothing bad but that is expected since I am only on my third shot if I get that far.Well see what the doc says.. I do not like my eyes issues pretty scarey when I read this ... F 33 2 months

1  Endometriosis The 1st month was great. Took away about 75% of my endo pain. Didn't really have any side effects as I was also taking the add back therapy. Every month since then has been a night mare. Severe pelvic/rectal burning. To the point I can't sit down. Increase pain. Gallbladder pain. The treatment is definately worse the the initial problem.  1  Endometriosos Mild relief of symptoms for first 3 months; less deep cramping, less pressure on back from swelling. Then, after another month, severe bone and muscle pain throughout body. Got MUCH worse after 5th injection. I believe Lupron sped my onset of Osteoporosis by lowering my estrogen so abruptly and drastically. I am a few years removed from my treatment now and I want to stress NOT to use Lupron Depot injections if you fit the profile for high risk of Osteoporosis!! My first 3 injections seemed to provide some relief from pain of Endometriosis, except that some of my adhesions were in my bowel, and it never seemed to help that. I awoke in the middle of the night with excruciating bone and muscle pain after 5th injection (was recommended I have 6) and had to cancel a long-awaited vacation as I could not move! I have 3 ruptured disks, have perforated an ulcer; I have a high pain threshold, but this was incredibly debilitating. And now that I am suffering from fractures from Osteoporosis and unable to work, I am hearing and reading that the Lupron route, for a person with my family profile and physique (small, white female) was a VERY bad idea! The sudden supression of estrogen threw my calcium balance seriously off track and my doctor never knew enough about this drug to know what was happening F 53 5 months

4  fibroid tumor(s) Slight spotting immediately after injection (received 2 days before my period. Otherwise, no hot flashes, or anything else that I had been warned about. I guess my only concern? is that my period has still not returned yet. Is it possible to continue on into menopause after taking this drug? F 44 4 months

5  Prostate Cancer Weight gain (30 lbs, 14% body fat to 24% body fat); inability to lose weight; general decrease in vitality; total inability to get erection; zero motivation for sex; some loss of body hair; tire easily-have to nap every day; discontinued strenous multi-day outdoor activity due to uncertainty about energy level. Up 3-6 times a night to urinate; occasional depression. Cool, huh? I have tried to maintain an aggressive exercise program (weight lifting, biking, some running, spinning class) but my aerobic health and strength levels have continually declined while on Lupron. I feel much older. I feel as if I am continually declining, not making progress to better health. PSA is down to less than .01 after IMRT and Taxotere Chemotherapy (Gleason 9 cancer)so it is working. I have had to begin to turn down invitations to do physically oriented activities due to my level of health. M 60 21 months

5  Endometriosis I had severe hot flashes/night sweats, still had a period for the first 2 shots, gained 20 pounds, and was very drained both physically and mentally all of the time. While taking the shot the pain was gone completly. It is a miracle drug. I never knew I could live pain free. I have always had bad periods so I just thought it was normal for the pain to be so intense until I turned 19 and the pain was so bad I couldn't move. I ended up having a laparoscopy Nov '03 but within 6 months the pain was back. In July '05 I started Lupron Depot. I took it for 6 months. I have now been off of the shot for almost 4 months and still have not started. The main reason I went on this drug was to try to get pregnant and so far we haven't been able to start trying yet. Within the last month off and on I have had some pain so I am not sure if it worked or not. I would really like to hear from people to know how long it took them after the shot to have a period again. F 22 6 months

3  Endometriosis HORRIFIC hot flashes in the middle of the night accompanied by insomnia, terrible mood swings, crying all the time, nausea, weakness in my legs, small amount of weight gain, increased acne my pain level has decreased a small amount. Have been on the injection for a month now, two months to go and I don't know if I can handle all of the side effects. Before Lupron I had horrific pain from endometriosis and now I still have some pain but it is accompanied by hot flashes, weight gain, mood swings, dizziness, increased acne, and nausea. Is it worth it? If this helps my body heal so I can become pregnant, then yes, it's worth taking! F 29 1 days

4  endometriosis mood swings, insomnia, heart palpatations, joint pain, fatigue I am wondering if anyone else has experienced heart palpatations? I just had my 2nd 3 month shot 2 weeks ago. The heart palpatations are new and very unsettling. I'm trying to deal with the rest of the side effects, but this one worries me. F 40 4 months

3  Endometriosis Headaches, dizziness, nausea, aches in arms and upper back, trouble sleeping, tiredness ranging from moderate to severe, and moodiness I guess I'm still undecided if all the side-effects will be worth the trouble. I am have some relief from pain, but not what I expected. I usually have pain in my right ovary each day no matter what. Now with the aches in my arms, I'm taking more motrin than I was before. The one positive is that with the lowered estrogen levels, my menstrual migraines are gone for right now. I just seem to have a general ache in my head. It could be from the aygestin I'm using for add-back therapy. Of course it could be from the fact I don't sleep very well. I'm just glad to hear I'm not the only one whose having muscle/bone aches. Now I can go to my doctor with a little ammo. When I got my shot, he informed me that aches like that weren't know side-effects of Lupron. I will now inform him to do a little more research!!!  4  Endometriosis and Fibroids Oh my, let me tell you, hot flashes that made me feel like I was in an inferno! TAKE NOTE OF THE TIME YOU GET AN EXTREME FLASH, you will notice that they happen around the same time everyday! In the beginning, some extreme headaches, but they subsided once in the second to third month. Can't say that I miss having my period, I only had one short cycle in the first one to two months. The relief of the PAIN I would be in means alot however, in spite of the 20lbs+ that I gained. I too mostly gained around the mid-section. I have never been this size in my life! So be ware on that! I also don't have much of a sex drive, not sure if its the meds or not but I think I'm more detached than ever! Night sweats are also a factor, I sleep with a fan blowing directly on me at night, every night! I still have another month to go and I am scheduled for the last shot the end of next week. Some mood swings and irritability is a factor.I can not tell you how happy I am to be leaving this medicine behind Perhaps they should come up with a way to deter the weight gain, or atleast explain the process for the weight gain.
