LUPRON DEPOT  (LEUPROLIDE ACETATE):  Leuprolide is used to treat advanced prostate cancer in men. It is not a cure. Most types of prostate cancer need the male hormone testosterone to grow and spread. Leuprolide works by reducing the amount of testosterone that the body makes. This helps slow or stop the growth of cancer cells and helps relieve symptoms such as painful/difficult urination. Talk to your doctor about the risks and benefits of treatment.   FDA Approval Date: 1989-01-26 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Endometriosis Hot flashes, Short-term memory loss, decreased libido, depression (which caused weight gain until i treated it) If you are experiencing weight gain on Lupron, try to figure out if it might be related more directly to depression, which is a side effect of lupron. Since it made all the hormones in my body decrease, I didn't have enough seratonin and so I ate compulsively until i started taking Lexapro. I have actually lost weight now on Lupron. It made all of my endo. symptoms disappear immediately. The hot flashes are almost intolerable at first but if you are truly deperate with endo you will get used to it. Just sleep naked and wear layers. Hopefully you have an understanding boyfriend or husband because my libido is zero. Still worth it though. If you want to quit after a month or two, just give it four more weeks. The most important thing is the treatment of the endo, which Lupron is the best at. F 17 6 months

3  endometriosis I'm having so many side effects; hot flashes, night sweats, moodiness, exhaustion, starting to get pimples and libido level LOW..im having a hot flash as I type this now I dont know how this is going to work. I guess these side effects are better than having really bad cramps but when I'm done and I start to get cramps again, I'm going to be mad... to put your body through these changes, at such a young age and so sudden, i hope it doesnt have any lasting effects. So far, the only feeling I have is I hope these side effects are worth it in the end. I would hate to feel like I went through this for nothing... I wish it was more positive feedback i was giving, but just being honest.... F 29 3 months

2  Endo, infertility hot flashes, loss of appetite, SEVERE mood swings (crying one minute, screaming the next), increased heart rate, irrational thoughts, insomnia, lack of concentration, memory loss. My experience with this drug was a horrible one. However, symptoms like mine are in the minority. It obviously works for some people, but anyone that is considering taking this medication: just be well informed. If you do happen to fall into the 2% that have severe manic reaction, it will help if you and your immediate family are prepared. I was supposed to receive four injections but the 1st was so bad I decided against getting any more. The first few days after my shot I felt great. I had lots of energy and motivation. Then things started going downhill. I couldn't eat or sleep, I had dry heaves which eventually turned into vommiting. My mood and personality began to change. I had extremely irrational thoughts, a few of which were: I thought God and the Devil were talking to me and I thought my husband was having multiple affairs (which I had NO basis for thinking that at all). I don't remember a lot of what went on during those 40 days or so the drug was in my system. I had to be taken to the ER twice for what they called "manic episodes". I didn't have any kind of violent thoughts just yelling, screaming, crying and making no sense. I was put on an anti-psychotic and sleep medication to get me through the month. I missed about a week and a half of work and wasn't allowed to drive during the whole time. Once approx 45 days had passed to allow the Lupron to run its course, I came off all the other medication F 30 1 months

4  endometriosis night sweats, hot flashes, insomnia, slight mood swings, lack of sex drive, fatigue, some memory issues and joint pain I am in the 2week of my 2nd 3month shot. Dr. started me on aygestin for the hot flashes. The first shot was real good except for the side effects I listed. Since the add back and 2nd shot I have started to swell, joint pain got much worse and I started to spot/bleed and have pelvic pain again. I am coming off the add back This is way worse than those minor side effects I listed. Hopefully I'll be back to that soon this is starting to feel like everything is starting all over again before the laparoscopy and the first shot...not a good feeling F 39 3 months

5  Fibroid/ Mood Swings/Heavy Flow Two days after the injection, I had horrible pain in my pelvic area, where my largest fibroid is located. After one week and my final period, I feel great, no hot flashes, no more mood swings began exercising 3-4x a week, since I am no longer in pain all the time. I was really afraid to take this drug, after reading so many negative things about it. But I feel like a new woman, and my children are very happy for me. I suffered from migranes, and PMS almost 14 days every month for over 6 years. I feel free! F 36 25 days

2  Endometriosis I've had hot flashes, chills, more pain during intercourse after I started the shot then before I got on it. Pain in my neck, shoulders and a 1/4 of the way down my back. I've not had a period since I've been on it, thats nice. I do like it for the simple fact that it does help with pain, even though I'm still having it. It's not as intense as it was before I started the shot. I'm just getting ready to get the 2nd shot.. Hopefully it will be better.. F 21 2 months

5  Suspected Endometriosis Increased symptoms (first 3 weeks); mood swings, hot flashes, night sweats and maybe memory loss, trouble sleeping. I have had 2 shot of the 3.75 Lupron Depot and go for my third next week. This injection has helped me out so much. I hardly ever have pelvic pain, lower back gain, upper leg pain and shoulder pain now. I also take Yasmin 28 continuously so I don't have menses. Though I do have some PMS symptoms around the time I would have a mense. But it is not anything like before the Lupron. I was quite worried about starting the injections by many things I read on the internet, but I am so happy I did. The first month of the injection I had increased endo symptoms; it was quite bad at some times and I missed a couple days of work. However, I was in severe pain most of the time before I started the Lupron. I have experienced mood swings, hot flashes and night sweats. But for the past 2 or 3 weeks, I have not had a hot flash or a mood swing. I do have trouble sleeping and my memory seems to be worse. I am not certain the memory thing is due to Lupron though. I would highly recommend this drug to an F 25 2 months

4  Prostate cancer Injection site pain on occassion. Weakness in hips and lower back so use a weight lifters belt when picking things up. Digestive system problems with gas. Insomnia so take a sleeping pill every night. Wake up from 3 to 6 times per night to urinate. Hot flashes with sweats that I have gotten used to. Absolutely no sex drive or interest-to castrate level for sure. I had a Gleason 6 cancer and underwent 45 IMRT radiation treaments. My PSA was 52.0 and is now down to .7 which shows that this combination was the best for me. Even though I have no sex drive my relationship with my wife has reached a higher level and we spend a lot of time massaging each others back and feet. But since I get up a lot at night we have to sleep in separate rooms. I will be on Lupron for another year and the side effects last from 6 to 9 months after treatment. I won't know if this was the cure until this time passes and we check my PSA. M 59 10 months

4  Uterine fibroids Serious business hot flashes; diminished sex drive; vaginal dryness; night sweats where I woke up needing a shower; probably affected mood but I was already a moody person Found about fibroids during pregnancy. Lost baby at five months as a result. Doctor said there were hundreds of fibroids. Two were the same size as the baby. One actually broke my water causing early labor. Had two injections of Lurpon. (Not really keen on the idea of reversing nature, but I wanted those suckers out of me.) Injections shrunk fibroids remarkably. Had myomectomy and all fibroids were removed. Uterus was reconstructed. Still having hot flashes. Had night sweats prior to injections. F 32 4 months

5  Prostate Cancer Hair loss from legs, arms, chest, Hot flashes, Middle weight gain, Reduced enegery level, Tired feeling a lot of the time,Loss of sex drive, Loss of sex intrest, Headaches, A lot of heavy phlegm. I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer at age 67. I had a PSA every 6 months for 15 years. In Jan of 2002 the good PSA was 24 and the bad PSA was 3.5. The bad had been runnning from 3-4 for 3 years. In June of 2002 the good PSA was 18 and the bad PSA was 4.75. At that point the Urologist scheduled a Biopsy and the cancer was found in 4 of 5 samples. I was lucky sometines it is missed. My "Gleason" number was 8.5. I received the first 4 month Lupron shot in February 2002 to try to stop the cancer and shrink the Prostate. I underwent radical Prostate surgery in April 2002 and there were no cancer cells outside of the Prostate. They checked Lymph nodes and they were clear. Because of the high "Gleason" number I stayed on 4 month Lupron shots, receiving the last one in June 2006. My PSA has been lower than they can read since the surgery. It is now <.04. I took Megace "Megestrol" from June 2002 untill April 2006 for the Hot Flashes, it controlled them. Before M 71 3 years

5  Endometriosis, Tumors, Bleeding Increased hot flashes, chills, night sweats, mood swings. These symptoms had already begun before Lupron due to my premenopausal state but did increase. The bleeding stopped a couple of weeks after 1st (3 month)shot Aug05 I had been bleeding severely aprox. 300 days out of 365 the year or so before treatment. I completed 3rd shot Feb06 It is Jun06 now and still no period Yeay! Still have some cramping and lower back pain. No weight gain, acne, headaches or joint pain like others. I actually lost about 20lbs I discovered that exercise helps the hot flashes more than anything else other than a cold wet rag or a dip in cool water. Go figure. The exercise seems to regulate body temp the best ironically. Eat lots of ice-cream and chipped ice for bone and body health and cool down and you can make it without add back therapy. I hope I never have a period or cramps and vomiting again. I had endo so bad never could carry child to term also had tubal pregnancy and chronic pelvic inflammatory disease. Supposed to go back to Doc after period starts back to see if tumors and endo have shrunk 10 months have passed and still no period Yeay! F 48 10 months

4  Stage4 endo and ovarian cysts HOT FLASHES GALORE, fatigue and minimal joint pain I love Lupron more than i can say. I am 19 years old and found out my first semester of college that i had ruptured ovarian cysts. this soon lead to 2 surgeries, loss of an ovary and tube, and the discovery of my endometriosis which my doctor says she has never seen any as bad as mine. I look back and realize that i have always had super painful heavy periods. i didnt know that was not normal but since i have started Lupron (i am 4 months into 6th month program) i have been almost completely pain free. i have the ocassional spastic uterine, ovarian pain but it is definitely not severe. recently i have started to have some cramping and spotting, however inconvient it is not painful enough to even take an advil. i would recommend lupron to anyone who has been diagnosed with endometriosis, ovarian cysts, or women who have pain, irregular, or heavy periods. but have a bottle of water and napkin handy for the hotflashes and upper lips sweat (super attractive) and be sure to take cal F 19 4 months

5  Fibroids, hemmorage-like bleeding Day after 1st injection, woke with severe sore throat and flu-like body aches. That lasted 2 days. My throat remained scratchy for just over 3 weeks. Started getting hot flashes after 3 weeks. They started as mild and seem to be increasing in intensity as time goes on. Have needed lots of extra sleep - I'm exhausted by 9 at night and sometimes feel sleepy during the day (I'm usually able to function for weeks at a time on just 5 - 6 hours of sleep per night). Dry mouth/thirst. Gained 10 lbs in first 2 weeks; have put on another 5 in the last 3 weeks even though I have significantly cut back on my food intake. I know the side effects make the drug seem impossible. I was scared to death before starting the injections (especially after reading some of the comments on this Web site), but I'm glad I did. The first thing the drug did was STOP the bleeding. It has been years since I've had even a full day with no bleeding. The first 2 weeks after my injection, I had no bleeding at all, now I have some light spotting most days. What a relief! I feel like there's hope of getting my life back after all. I know that my side effects seem like a lot, but aside from the tiredness, they don't interfere with my life the way the bleeding did. And even the need to sleep isn't all bad, I've probably pushed myself too hard for years. I'm looking at (much of) the extra sleep as a way to relax a bit and take care of me. My sex drive has not changed - in fact, without all the bleeding I feel more sexual than I have for a long time. The hot flashes are annoying (I have stronger words for the more intense ones).  4  endometriosis so far - slight headache, slight breast tenderness, slight tingle of skin haven't been on it long enough to know if it is working for me. I did notice a relief from my cramps right away - but don't know enough about the drug to know if it is actually the drug or my mind making the pain less. I have been in a really great mood ever since recieving my first shot - we have all been joking that maybe that is my mood change? would appreciate any comments as to how soon this is actually supposed to take effect.
