CYMBALTA  (DULOXETINE):  Duloxetine is used to treat depression and anxiety. In addition, duloxetine is used to help relieve nerve pain (peripheral neuropathy) in people with diabetes or ongoing pain due to medical conditions such as arthritis, chronic back pain, or fibromyalgia (a condition that causes widespread pain). Duloxetine may improve your mood, sleep, appetite, and energy level, and decrease nervousness. It can also decrease pain due to certain medical conditions. Duloxetine is known as a serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). This medication works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural substances (serotonin and norepinephrine) in the brain.   FDA Approval Date: 2004-08-03 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  Fibromyalgia and Anxiety Dry throat (drink more water as solution), dizziness if you stand up too fast, nausea for the first few months but it’s fine now. Weight gain. I started taking cymbalta for my fibro in grade 9 when I had resigned myself to living a half life, essentially. Within the first few months of taking it I noticed change in my energy, fatigue and energy levels for the good. I’m able to live life now. F 16 3 years

5  PTSD & Fibromyalgia None I had been on Zoloft for 22 years due to PTSD and Fibromyalgia and it had worked fine until the Fibro ramped up to severe nerve pain on my left leg. My Dr. recommended I try Cymbalta and I didn't want to because of all the negativity I'd read. He said try it one month, so I agreed. There was no odd transferal from the Zoloft to the Cymbalta. I was flabbergasted when my pain went down 90% by the second day. I still can't believe it after four months. I have more energy; I'm more excited to get out and get things done. I've lost a little weight since I'm moving more. Things aren't perfect, but, heck, I'm an old lady ! I'm also the full time caretaker of a husband with dementia .... I need all the help and optimism I can get ! F 73 4 months

5  Anxiety, nerve damage None I would encourage anyone who has been a dealing with depression, anxiety or other issues for years and has tried many meds. to not hesitate to try one that wasn’t great for you when you were much younger again. I’ve noticed that my body has changed in how it reacts to several medications that I have had to use with surgeries and other issues. I tried Cymbalta a long time ago and didn’t like the side effects, but decided to give it another try. It can be very helpful with some pain conditions and I needed something that didn’t cause anxiety. I have had zero side effects. I am sleeping better, doing less stress eating, feel far less anxious and worried than I did on Wellbutrin. I was nervous about trying Cymbalta after reading the negative reviews on here, but other sites have far more positive experiences, too. It’s been good for me so far. I’ve also had the fewest number of migraines from my cervical nerve damage that I’ve had in years. F 55 2 months

5  Chronic Pain, Anxiety and Mood Dry Mouth No weight gain! I lost 72 pounds because the medication stopped binge eating. My pain is bad 24/7 and Cymbalta helps quiet the signals. I don't have depression but I do have anxiety and some social fears and this medication helps if taken for at least the first year! F 54 7 years

5  Depression, grief, severe headaches Always thirsty, dry mouth, some restlessness, jittery at times I have to say that I was not wanting to get back on an anti-depressant after being off them for years, but I'm a bereaved Mom and the sadness is a constant struggle. I also had daily stress headaches and that in itself was making me very depressed. I started taking 30 mg, and a week later up to 60 mg. My appetite is less (not a bad thing), I have not had a headache since beginning Cymbalta. My body aches are lessened. It feels like someone turned the "volume" down in my head so my sadness and depressed mood are almost gone. I'm looking forward to things again, I feel hopeful and happier than I have in awhile. I've read all the awful reviews and I'm happy I have nothing but good to report. It has really pulled me out of a bad space, so I'm able to be a functioning happy Mom and wife again. F 52 3 weeks

5  Major Depressive Disorder GAD,PTSD The first day I took the med I had some nausea and loss of appetite for the first 3 days. I noticed tons of energy! My appetite seems to be getting better. The depression felt like it left the first 3 to 4 days, but I had a med issue came up so that probably triggered some anxiety. Some blurring of my vision. I wear reading glasses but seems distance things become blurry on &off. This med has helped me a lot so far with the depression and anxiety. Ive been taking the 20 mgs instead of 40mgs yet due to the energy I feel I dont want to be up all night. Which Insomnia has been an issue for me and with the melatonin I'm able to sleep and not having to take it daily even right now. The thing that really concerns me is this med going to be affecting my vision, making it worse. Plus, having MDD trying if needed to have to get off this med. All the horror stories I'm hearing about weaning off and still having to live with all the suffering from all the withdraw symptoms just trying to get off of it. I recently had a genetic screening and waiting on my results. I'll go from there and see if theres possibly a better fit. I was just weaned off 10 mg of lexapro as I started this med. Lexapro only numbed things out and gave me a lot of suicidal ideation. I couldnt feel it cry This particular med seemed to flip me around, for the positive. I never had any tolerance to any meds as I'm sensitive to them and do not like taking even a tylenol. F 53 5 days

5  Depression None Long story short, Cymbalta has saved my life. I am finally starting to feel like my old self again, and I am able to go outside of the house and enjoy the things I used to. Took me from deep depression to my normal, happy self again, and NOT in a manic way, just normal!!!! F 53 2 weeks

5  Depression, anxiety, chronic pain Low libido, weight gain. I have difficulty swallowing the Australian generic, but no problems w the Cymbalta branded. This medication has saved my life, allows me to be an involved mother, and gives me a significant degree of control over my symptoms. But, as I'm on a high dose, it is imperative that I take my dose at precisely the correct time every 12 hours or I risk paranoia, voices, extreme anxiety and suicidal thoughts. These side effects are significantly increased with interactions from other medications. F 49 5 years

5  major depression and anxiety The only side effect I have had is waking up at night drenched in sweat. I was on cymbalta for a number of years and it worked. Then I had several life changing events and anxiety set in and I thought it was the cymbalta not working. Then for a year and a half my doctor continued to change my meds, nothing worked. I went into an out patient program for mental illness, still nothing worked. I am now back on cymbalta and finally feeling better. I could be better so my new doctor found that I don't absorb the medication correctly so plans are to up my dose to 140 mg and add folic acid. As for all the people who have had bad experiences with this drug, all I can say is some meds work for some people and some don't. I had simalar experiences going on and off the half a dozen other anti depressants for a year and a half. You have to give the drugs a chance to work and in my experience it takes at least 4-6 weeks to find out if the drug is going to work. Good luck to all suffering with depression and/or anxiety, it will get better :) F 52 3 years

5  fibromyalgia and lupus chronic pain Felt hazy and weird the first dose Cymbalta is amazing!! Pain meds didn't even touch my pain. I remember just people watching and being in tears while thinking I would love to just be able to walk care free again, without pain. Literally every part of my body hurt. The first dose made me feel strange and I decided I was done with meds. But I got to a point to where I was so depressed that I gave it another try...and OMG...I feel like me again. I can shop, I can stand and walk for long periods of time again! I just pray that it continues to work. I was on plaquenil for 9 months and it was literally killing me. My dr kept saying to give it a year. I was getting worse and worse, did my research and yep..I was right. Plaquenils rare side effects cause muscle damage and worsens chronic pain....my dr said.."sorry bout that"...Thank you Cymbalta!!!! F 45 3 months

5  depression and anxiety The first few days were like a fog. I didn't eat much due to nausea and then it was fine. Had a headache too. Difficulty with reaching orgasm. I stopped taking it cold turkey ( I actually just forgot to use it for 5 days) and suffered 0 side effects or reactions. Originally I was put on it with a view to ceasing after 6 months but I was terrified I'd revisit the horrible depression and anxiety so I stayed on it. F 40 2 years

5  Osteoarthritis Before taking Cymbalta I was on so much pain medication and still had no life. I missed out seeing my son grow up because all I did was sleep and barely move because of pain. My doctor started on Cymbalta and within weeks I had my life back. I had prayed so long for an answer. Pain stole so many years of my life and cheated my son out of having a mother. Just recently I tried to reduce the amount of Cymbalta I was taking. After 3 doses at the reduced amount I could tell a difference in my pain level. Thank you Eli Lilly for giving me back my life.  5  Bipolar 2 Relaxing and calming effect, i am mellowed out with no more rage or agression/ hypomania. Still have a bi-monthly crying spell and a few moments of despair but that coincides with negative thinking and reflecti g on past hurt. My body feels good, no weight gain or change in appetite; very little menstrual pain, which I did not expect! I just feel so happy to be alive and I enjoy all the things I used to do; does affect my abilty to sleep for extended perioda due to some night sweats and vivid dreams; some sleep talking and outburts once or twice a week at night, but i have no sleeping partner so this is no issue for me. A small trade off for extreme happiness; I smile alot. F 22 1 years

5  Depression, anxiety I have taken Zoloft, Paxil, and Effexor all with awful side effects. Cymbalta is the first antidepressant I've taken that didn't kill my sex drive, or cause any other significant side effects. Those dark, depressing days I used to have are just a memory. The severe anxiety I've had since I was a child, has significantly lessened. I appreciate so much, everyone who takes the time to comment, good or bad, on the medications that have been prescribed to them, and the experiences they've had with them. We are all different, and what may be a wonder drug to one person, might be another person's hell on earth. (That would be one dose of Paxil for me...insomnia, and horrible anxiety) My sister passed away suddenly of a massive stroke, and it threw me into a depression so deep, I no longer could see anything positive and good about life. My Dr. thought upping my dose of Cymbalta to 90mg a day would be helpful. I resisted for months, because I don't like to be on any more medicine than absolutely necessary, but finally relented. I didn't even relate the dosage change to my increasing jaw pain and clenching, and constant migraines until I decided to look it up here. It also caused my prolactin levels to skyrocket, leading my Endocrinologist to request an MRI to rule out tumors. I am now going to reduce my dose of Cymbalta back to the 60 mg a day that's has helped me thus far, without the side effects the additional 30 mg a day caused me. I'm hoping to do that with as few side effects as possible. I'm nervous about it, because if I ever have missed a dose of my Cymbalta, I start to feel awful, my face starts to feel numb, and those electric shock feelings start in my hands. I stopped worrying about ever going through the withdrawals, because I plan to take Cymbalta for rest of my life. But now find it necessary, because the extra 30 mg are causing so many unwelcome side effects. I still am very happy with the results I've gotten from the 60 mg a day of The Cymbalta, and will stick to that dose from now on. F 48 7 years

5  depression , anxiety and back pain The only side effects I have had was a problem sleeping sometimes. Before I started talking this medication I read a lot of the reviews here and was really afraid to take it.I decided to try it anyways because of the positive reviews here and I'm so glad I did.Since taking this medicine I have more energy, better able to concentrate and it controls my appetite.I have lost 15lbs already and have started to exercise. It works wonders for my pain, but I haven't noticed a change with the anxiety as of yet. F 45 1 months

5  Depression Withdrawal when missed dose. Exhaustion, horrible anxiety, crying, unable to work or function. Withdrawal symptoms always happened within 24 hours of missed dose.NOT recommended to skip or stop suddenly! Controls worst of my depression and anxiety. It seems side effects people report depend on the reason they are taking the medication. F 42 10 years
