FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopinina I experienced terrible abdominal pain and debilitating back pain after my 5th pill. Previous to that I had the feeling my leg would give out...knee the same...grinding in my neck. After stopping the alendonate I experienced a sprain in my hand . Now I have swollen ankles..painful Achilles. Walking like a stick figure. Before I took this I felt good. Walk a mile in 20 minutes. I hope I will be able to resume my normal life. I don't know why a doctor would prescribe it and why it has not been removed from the market. F 72 5 weeks

1  Osteoporosis The pain in my jaw today was getting worse to the point that chewing was really uncomfortable. I have been getting cramps in my lower body (thighs, calves, and feet) and frequent diarrhea. Three days ago, I experienced such crushing heartburn and chest pain, I thought I was having a heart attack! I started taking an aspirin a day because of it. I have had extreme acid reflux for the past 2-3 weeks, but I didn't realize, until just now, the Fosamax may have been at the root of it all. 3 days after I starting taking Fosamax, I became really congested, started wheezing, and called my doctor. I have not been able to get rid of the bronchitis and coughing, despite taking the medication my doctor prescribed. Now, I think the Fosamax may be linked to all of this. Believe me, now that I have read about others also experiencing these negative side effects, I won't be taking another dose! F 53 6 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Incapaciting bone & muscle pain. It didn't get bad until I was on it 6 months. It took a long time to realize my symptoms were being caused by Fosamax. The entire time I was gaining weight, bloated with increased fatigue. I wouldn't recommend anyone take this drug without careful monitoring by an M.D. who knows the side effects. F 61 8 months

1  osteoperosis Severe pain in back, shoulders, chest muscles, ankles, knees, legs, jaw, wrists. Painful sciatic nerve. Painful scalp. Waves of disruption in thought. Waves of nausea. My GP prescribed Fosamax for osteoperosis. I protested because of the ambiguous results and he insisted. Prescribed one month dosage. One day after taking the medication I was awakened at 5: 00 AM by severe pain in left shoulder. I could not roll over and had difficulty getting out of bed. I managed to shuffle to the couch where I have been sitting and sleeping for four days now. I took Tylenol for the pain and it helps a little but not for long. I have pain all over my body. My body feels very hot and I have to sleep under a blanket . I cannot walk without help. I cannot lift my left arm. I have a shooting pain down my left hip and I think this is the sciatic nerve. I have a constant feeling of a shade being pulled down over the top part of my brain. Today the pain is lessened in the legs but, I have sore fingers and heel. The chest pain is so bad it hurts to breath deeply. I have never felt this bad or have been in so much pain in all my life. I have not called the doctor yet. I am so angry about his insistence on me taking this drug. Had I known about these possible side effects I would not have taked this drug. I am dreaming and wishing for a solution. Today is Monday, calling the GP later. If I never get over this pain then my life is ruined from this point forward. All, please be aware of the possibility it could happen to you. I will join in on any class action suit I hear about against this drug manufacturer. I am very hurt and angry and wish I F 66 1 days

1  osteoporosis I was dx w/ osteoporosis after a recent bone scan. My prior test was 2 years ago and said I was osteopenia. My PCP wanted to start me on meds then but I refused due to side effects. I exercise, my wt. is WNL, I'm 60 years young. I decided to take the medication. Four days later I developed sudden stiff neck and bil joint pain of my thumbs. I called my PCP and was instructed to d'c the med.(which I already did) I'm two weeks past the first dose and still have the neck pain. I saw my holistic provider and through muscle testing she said my body does not like the Fosamax. I've started supplements and will continue to monitor my systems. I will NOT take these medications.  1  osteoporosis I already have a lot of pain from severe spinal problems--can't take any more pain. I began using strontium 10 months ago and my recent Dexa scan showed a modest increase in bone density (left hip made the most gain and is now osteopenia instead of osteoporosis). I'll continue with the strontium for sure! Look it up on Amazon---I take Doctor's Best brand. F 58 1 days

It has been five weeks and I still have a stiff neck, but there has been some improvement. I discontinued this drug and do not recommend it. F 60 1 weeks

1  Osteoporosis from a cancer pill No side effects first day. Next day terrible backache down my spine. After that I had pains in my ribs, pains in my abdomen, nausea, weakness and pains in all of my joints, headache. This is a terrible medication. I felt good when I took it but after 3 days I felt like a cripple. Pains everywhere - wrists, shoulders, arms. I could barely get up out of a chair or in and out of bed. Unable to leave the house for 4 days because of how terrible I felt. I still have aches all over my body and can't stand for very long. I'm weak and feel like my legs won't hold me. I have been in good health and led a very active lifestyle. I'm hoping I'll get back to that again. F 84 1 days

1  osteopenia No side effects while taking it until the 5th-6th year of taking it. I then experienced severe bone pain for the next 5.5 years, even after stopping usage at year 8. The pain went diagnosed until doctors found broken L 4-5 facet joint that needed surgery, broken wrist that was casted 4 times and then just placed in a soft split as it would not heal, and a broken rib. The L 4-5 did not fuse after 4 back-to-back surgeries due to the hardware pulling out of bone after 2-3 days after each consecutive surgery. Two and one half years later, still has not fused. Finally, specialists in Denver diagnosed it as Frozen Bone Syndrome, which they stated was more than likely caused by taking Fosamax for more than 2 years. Specialty docs state that they are seeing more and more Fosamax patients with this bone disorder all the time. I still have severe pain in the lower back and hip areas. My bones are still not rejuvenating and after 2 bone biopsies, prognosis is not good. My condition is now cons I have endured extreme chronic bone pain due to taking Fosamax and I am still living through the bone non-rejuvenation nightmare. I would like to warn anyone taking the Fosamax for 2 years or more...to STOP, Take A Holiday From It!! My past 5.5 years have been a living hell. I think they need to take this drug off the market!
