FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Thinning bone I have sever pain in both knees, did not have any knee pain before taking Fasomax. Now I have a hard time getting up or sitting down. I am very active but after taking Fasomax for 10 months I feel like I am 100 years old and can no longer do any of the exercises that I did on daily basis before Fasomax. I can not go up and down the stairs without lot of pain. Every bone and muscle in my body hurts all the time and my doctor can not find anything wrong. I have stopped taking the medication, two weeks ago after reading most of the comments. I am so glad I found this website. In two weeks I cannot believe the difference, for the first time in two years I am able to go up and down stairs again. I can touch my knees without screaming from pain. I still have some aching joints but I believe it will go away in a few weeks given the difference in two weeks. I will never take this medication again, bone loss or not. My thanks to all those who posted their symptoms and saved me from a life of pain and suffering. F 50 2 years

1  Ostopenia I have been taking it once a week for five weeks. Almost immediately I had sore joints and stiffness. Bad pain in hips. Even my cheekbones ache! I am very active, I do yoga all the time, and have NEVER in my life had joint pain. I am 56 and am starting to feel like 76. After the fifth dose I immediately developed severe bloating and cramping and diarhea. On the fourth day, flu-like symptoms developed. I was nauseous and could not eat and went to bed at 7:30 for two nights in a row this week. I have not felt so sick for decades. Yesterday I had to quickly get off a bus on the way home from work because I felt I was about to throw up. This drug is poison and I will never take another dose. Will do weight training and diet instead. So very glad I found this site! Thank you all! F 56 5 weeks

4  OSTEOPENIA Lower back pain and a few painful toes--don't know if it's related to the Fosamax though. Attention ladies who experienced extreme intestinal discomfort after first pill: I had the same bad pain but by the second pill I had absolutely no intestional problems. Just want to say, give Fosamax more than a one pill chance. F 49 1 years

1  diagnosed osteoporosis I feel I've been saved!!I would like to thank all of you for helping me decide! I've just been diagnosed and my Dr wants me on Fosamax. My gut instinct was to say no and I'm usually right. My T-score is neg 1.2. I'm not sure how bad this is, but I will find out. After reading your comments, there's no way I will take this medicine. (cleanser?) I have enough pain with fibromyalgia and arthritis. Thank you and I hope you all get well from this horror! The drug makers should be made to take it themselves. Bet they wouldn't want to do it! How do they face themselves in the mirror? My grandmother lived to be 92 with osteo and died without all these awful symptoms I've been hearing about. It's not worth it,I think. Let's do the natural ways and moderation in all things. That's what I'll do. F 55 0 days

1  slight osteoporosis Burning pain in thighs. Pain in legs, back, aches that I never had before. Felt like I was 20 years older. After two months of not taking I feel like my self again. I will do walking and weight train, take calcium. I do not plan on taking Fosamax again. F 60 2 years

3  osteopenia Skin itching, very sensitive to the sun (it feels like I'm standing too close to an open fire, my skin turns red and then clears up once I'm out of the sun) Seemed to be working somewhat until this year's bone density test as I now have osteoporosis. Am concerned about brittle bones after recent reports. Also have experienced some of the eye problems and aching as reported by others. F 59 5 years

1  osteopenia I started taking Fosamax 11/04 and really thought I had no problems with it. However, starting in January of 06, I began having terrible sciatica. I could not walk or drive by March. It was diagnosed by MRI as a synovial cyst of L5 pushing on the sciatic nerve and I had physical therapy, acupuncture, 2 epidural spinal injections. Nothing worked. I had a foraminectomy 4/11 and surgeon said what he removed was a combination bone spur/synovial cyst. The pain was gone almost immediately, but I almost died anyway as the night of the surgery (outpatient) I had a seizure and was rushed to the ER with hyponatremia (low sodium) If they had not recognized what it was and treated it appropriately I would be a vegetable or dead. As it is, after 2 days in the ICU plus 2 more, I feel sort of OK, except during the 2 seizures, I chewed through my tongue and cannot eat/drink without pain still, although it will supposedly eventually heal. Before I had the surgery I wondered about the Fosamax and w One and a half years F 63

1  osteoporosis Pain in left eye, 2 week duration, dark spots and flashing lights. Also in last month have had headaches that come and go, and vague feeling of nasal stuffiness. After doing some research I see that eye pain and other visual complications (some serious) are a rare side effect of Fosamax. Nothing is worth losing your eyesight. F 61 6 months

1  osteopeni The first week was fine but then started to have stomach aches, diarrhea, and soon developed right hip pain which continued to get worse, spreading down to my right knee. I could hardly get up and moving was quite painful for the first 20 steps or so. I am still having severe hip, knee and right leg muscle pain after being off Fosamax for a month. I only took it for 6 weeks. I had taken Actonel for over a year with no side effects but had to switch for ins. reasons, and now wish I had paid the extra amount and stayed on Actonel. The hip pain is being to subside, but I still have a long way to go. I am hoping it will go away completely. Has anyone completely recovered from their joint pain after stopping Fosamax? F 51 6 weeks

1  osteopenia Started out with horrible GERD and five months later, I have found I may have a chronic swallowing disorder(esophageal motility disorder). From my research, it looks like essentially, your esohagus looses the ability to function. The esophagus is a muscle and the neurons controlling the muscle may be destroyed. There is no cure for these types of diseases. I always feel there is something stuck in my throat, teeth and jaw pain, constant burping. I was sick the other night and I couldn't throw up, simply awful. I will probably end up going to a specialized clinic (Mayo or Cleveland Clinic) to have further tests. I have lost lots of weight and went from a healthy woman to a very ill person. I hope this doesn't happen to anyone else, it's terrible. I thought my biggest problem was constant GERD. I never wished that I "just had GERD." This may lead to botox injections of the esophagus, balloon dialations or myotomy surgery (cutting of the esohagus muscles). I only took Please don't take this medication under any circumstance. I think it will eventually kill people, and I may be one of them. F 56 4 days

1  osteo I experienced every side effect imaginable, and all that are listed on the other comments sent in...This drug should be tested further and as well as actonel since i was on that also,,2 months on these poisons and my body has changed,,I went to er many times, had mri,,,saying shoulder shows arthritis,,,but not too bad, but then why do i have this burning feeling and all the other symptoms listed in all the other ratings...Todays paper now shows Merck is going to probably be sued for this jaw problem..and stated the company knew some of these side effects but does not tell people...so its all for the money not for the patients,,,Please ladies and some gents also DO NOT TAKE THIS PILL IT IS BAD AND NEEDS FURTHER LOOKING INTO TO THE SIDE EFFECTS AND LONG TERM RESULTS. Those of you who say it is wonderful,,well that is great but hope down the road the long term side effects dont attack your bodies...nuff said. F 69 2 days

1  Recommended by physician Never took it. Low bone density is NOT necessarily a cause of fracture! Asians have low bone density and few fractures. Hi density does not protect against fracture. Fosomax & co. are drug industry hype. Everyone is being prescribed it and no one knows the long term effects, just like Estrogen--which it turns out causes cancer, heart attacks & strokes. Doctors are supposed to do no harm, but they are mesmerized by the drug companies who ply them with gifts and free samples and misleading studies. F 63 0 days

1  Osteoporosis As I sit here I am in SHOCK!!! After adding to this list I continued to read. My mouth fell open!!! I looked back on my calender just to see how long I took this drug... THREE WEEKS.. I thought stomach pain was all I received from this drug... But after not being on it.. maybe two months now, I guess it is still in my body!!! For the last 4 to 5 weeks I have been having the worse shoulder pain. First day the spasm so bad I could hardly get out of the chair. For three weeks I could hardly talk without crying. Felt like a knife going through me. After three doctors and lots of meds, it is finially letting up. But still tender. My hips have been killing me which I just thought, ok, I'm getting old. I just can't believe this drug is doing this, but I Am believing it!!! In a few short weeks I have felt like I have aged 20 years... What do we do???? How can we get doctors to believe us??? Now, I have been given Boniva!!! I have not started it and I keep looking at it sitting here.. I think it's going in the trash!!! NO, I know it's going in the trash... I'm still in shock... Thank you all for taking the time to help others.. And to think, all I thought was I had stomach pain... I am really mad......... F 50 3 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Thought I was getting a virus. Stomach starting hurting bad one night. Went to bed with a trash can beside me. Never got sick but stomach cramped for days. Was only on it about 4 weeks. Doctor told me to stop a month then start back. I just don't feel good about this after reading all of this... I mean is it really worth it??... What did our parents and grandparents do??? I think I'm going to watch and wait and read all I can. F 50 4 weeks

1  osteopenia painful shoulder and hip joints. general weakness- a grocery bag seems too heavy !! lots of stiffness when getting up in the AM. I feel much older than I am. I didn't research this drug before I started taking it on dr. recommendation after bone scan showed 18% density loss in hips over base line scan 2 yrs prior.I don't have numbers but I'm just in the ' caution ' zone. I was shocked when I got the diagnosis as I have no family history for this condition. So I took the drug. Unfortunately, I needed to change health ins carrier( group to individual) at this time and was denied coverage from my previous carrier. I finally did find coverage but am penalized with a 50% inc over posted premium due to my "condition" and Fosomax rx.! Now I feel like a fool to have been so gullible and not researched before I took that first pill. Its costing me big time in ins premiums and I won't be able to get rid of that. I think I'm going off this stuff and see what happens. I excercise daily ( walking briskly for about 2 ,sometimes 3 mi) but don't do specific weight bearing excercise for my arms.Need to start that. I eat well. Aside from Estrace F 60 6 months
