FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia I took fosamax for 3 months. I started experiencing severe pain under both my ribs as well as a very bad pain in my joints. I hurt so bad I thought I was having a heart attack. I went to a new doctor and she told me she never recommended fosamax as it caused many problems in the entire chest area. I was a very healthy person before the fosamax but felt as if I had aged 100 years after taking it for three months. I went to a health food store and was told to take shart cartlidge with glucosamine. It was also recommended that I take collagen. I started on that program and I feel 100% better just after a couple of weeks. F 58 3 months

1  osteopenia I only took one pill & had the headache from hell! It lasted all day & I was really sick at my stomach. Then when I woke up today, I was sore all over. My chest was hurting so much I thought I might be having a heart attack. After reading all the other comments on this site - I have decided it is from the Fosamax. I will not take another pill - but will continue on the calcium & vitamin D. I would not recommend this medication to any one! F 50 1 days

1  osteopenia jaw death; loose teeth; I now need bone grafts in the jaw and at least 6 root canals; bone pain in feet, ankles and hands; cannot walk easily after sitting or resting; I limp for 5 minutes after resting; blurry vision; dry mouth Everone please hear this: After my complaints about bone pain, I was diagnosed by my GP as seriously deficient (86%)in Vitamin D. Since I eat healthy and spend hours in my garden, there has to be more to this issue. I believe that Fosamax somehow depletes Vitamin D, which makes it impossible for your body to use any calcium you're getting. I am now on massive doses of prescribed Vitamin D, but my condition is basically the same as rickets, and I don't know if it will be corrected. PLEASE get a simple blood test to see if Fosamax has dangerously lowered your Vitamin D levels. If it turns out that all the people suffering bone pain are Vitamin D depleted, this is another cause of action against Merck, in addition to the Jawdeath that many of us are suffering. If this turns out to be true for you, please post and let the rest of us know! F 50 4 years

1  Osteoporsis Extreme diarrhea, bone pain, fatigue, depression I had taken Boniva for a year and the doctor said there was no improvement on my bone scan so he prescribed Fosamax. I couldn't go out until late afternoon because the diarrhea let up about then. After six weeks it was so bad I didn't make it to the bathroom. At that point I stopped taking Fosamax. All the side effects I had blamed on ageing disappeared. I feel much younger. I think the year of Boniva contributed to the above symptoms and they became worse on Fosamax. I checked out a website called HealthBoards.com and was amazed so many women had so many side effects from Fosamax and other osteoprosis meds. Some of them recommended a book, "The Myth of Osteoporosis" by Gillian Sanson. It explained everything and aleviated my fears. I have no financial interest in the book, I do not profit in any way. One more thing, the unnecessary fear of osteoporosis has caused me much damage since HRT prescribed for it about 8 years ago caused a blood clot (Deep Vein Thrombosis) i F 72 6 weeks

5  I have osteoporisus I have experienced no side effects. I take it on Sunday morning before I start getting ready for church and by the time we get to buy coffee it has been at least an hour. One time I drank coffee within 30 minutes and had a little indigestion. I have been taking fosamax for over 5 years and I am real particular that I do not drink coffee for at least an hour, maybe a little more. It has taken my hip pain away and I have no other pain. I am very active and have no other medical problems, so I feel very fortunate. I think if you are very careful to take it exactly like it says with plenty of water and not eat or drink or lay back down for 30 minutes, you will do fine taking it. I recommend it for all these reasons above. If they change, then I will stop taking it. F 71 5 days

1  Had signs of osteoporosis I got heartburn after 11 months and stopped taking it. Also had dry eye couldn't wear my contacts, and got this weird sparkley color and rings effects in my left eye. Also got what I thought was a floater, no it was caused from shirking in the back of the eye. Feet hurt and left side of body too. lose of muscle can't seem to lift anymore. Have been off fosamax for a year now and still have effects from the drug. Eye site is blurred at times, left side of body aches more, indgestion isn't so bad but get it without warning where as before I could eat anything. Getting hot flashes and nite sweats again. Lost of muscle. Was put on Boniva 1 pill and was totally sick for 3 weeks, its as bad or worse than fosamax. I do not recommend any of these pills to anyone. My doctor said to not take anymore and to increase calicum and vit D and excerise. Have been doing those but will increase. F 60 11 months

1  osteoporosis The first week I slept from 6:30 p.m. until the next a.m. The second wk was unremarkable. The third week I had transient flu symptoms, pains in my legs, twitching in the muscles around my eyes and hair loss. The flu symptoms were terrible. I was at Dulles airport and had to use a wheelchair. In Zurich, I could barely walk due to feelings of disorientation, nausea, and general weakness. I am now trying a different medication.  1  osteopenia Starting gradually I experienced more and more severe muscle pain around my hips and knees. By the time I stopped taking it I had gone from an unusually young 59 to a hobbling old woman. I've been off the drug for 2 weeks and have seen only a mild change for the better. I can only hope a complete reversal of my symptoms is possible. I am shocked and angered that patient complaints about this drug have been so blithely unheeded by doctors. I'd like to have some medical explanations for my symptoms. What has this drug done to my muscles that has caused so much pain? Is this a reversible condition? There must be thousands of women and men suffering. F 59 10 months

1  osteopenia This is an update to a previous posting. I took Fosamax for 19 months, but started having severe shoulder pain after just one month. Due to the fact the I would never have associated severe bone pain with a drug to help my bones, I continued to take it long after the pain started. (I thought I had injured my shoulder doing Yoga or lifting weights.) It wasn't until I stumbled on this site that I learned of the connection to Fosamax. The bone/muscle pain warning WAS NOT on the label when I started taking it. The FDA has recently published an article directly linking Fosamax to bone pain to the point that some women has become bedridden. Please read the link at http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/psn/transcript.cfm?show=54#5 More has to be done to educate patients BEFORE they take this drug. I will never take it again.  4  osteoporosis No side effects noted that I could relate directly to Fosamax. Suspect it may have helped with mild hot flashes. I was already taking Evista after postmenopausal hystarectomy and Fosamax was added after broken shoulder and ensuing bone density scan which diagnosed osteo. F 2 years

1  TKR Failing I have been taking fosamax for 7 weeks. I now have chests pains to the point that I think I am having a heart attack on third -4th day after taking. Also having pain in both hips, burning pain under my left rib cage. Sore muscles in legs and arms. AThese are problems I have never had prior to taking. I am thinking seriously about discontinuig this medication. I had a double TKR (both knees) at the same time. One knee now has pain and it appears that the cement and the bone is turning loose of the femor side prostethis. Thats way my Dr recommended Fosamax. I have never had a bone density test. Supposed to take for 6 months and see the doc again to see if knee has benefit. At this rate I will be in a wheel chair in 6 months. M 61 7 weeks

2  Tibial fracture, low bone density I have experiened moderately severe thigh pain for years---probably since starting taking Fosamax 7 years ago. I also have had L hip pain, but this is helped by glucosomine and chondriton. I have moderate knee pain also. I ache at night and the pain wakes me up. Walking after sitting is difficult and painful. Walking is improved after a dozen steps or so. Stretching my muscles does help relieve the pain, for some reason. This discomfort is gradually getting worse as time goes on. I've also had a salivary stone removed, plus xrays show spur formations on various joints. The bottom of my right foot has started tingling and acting like its falling asleep. I have complained to my doctor before and he has more-or-less just shrugged his shoulders. I plan to discuss with my doctor switching to Evista or something other than a biophasphonate when I see him in November (06). I agree, this site is great. F 69 7 years

1  Osteoporosis Started Fosamax in Jan 06. My sympoms started 2 months later. Terrible pain in feet, hands, wrists, elbows, nausea, creepy crawly feeling under my skin, loss of energy and sleep. No pain meds help. After many blood tests, some of them repeated, my rheumatologist has decided my sympotoms are from taking this drug. Prior to my taking this, as of 7 months ago, I was working out for 1-1/2 hours 3-4 days a week. Now I can barely get out of bed or off the couch. This is a life altering experience for me. I stopped July 2, 2006, so I have a long way to go to get this resolved and to become pain free. I never experienced any of these symptoms prior to Fosamax. If anyone out there can give me some hope for a better future, please email me. I welcome all responses. Thank you. I talked to 4 separate pharmacists in my city and not one of them upon my questioning would mention these potential problems. I am on a cruscade to give patients options when prescribed this medication. People need to know it can cause these terrible problems. F 67 3 months

1  Osteoporosis Extreme hearturn/heart attack symptoms I have just self directed myself to never take Fosamax again.Am willing to deal with osteoporosis symptoms after reading 50 pages of comments.Took Actonel 40 mgs/1 year/had no problems. Medicare refused to cover Actonel, doctor suggested Fosamax 70 mgs/2week test/switched.On 47th day, suddenly had extreme chest tightening warm pain-traveled slowly from bottom of my esofagus up to jawbone.I thought I was having a heart attack even though I had just had thorough cardiac work up including nuclear stress test two weeks prior. I called my doctor/told me to immediately go to ER room for heart attack symptons even though pain lasted 5 minutes. After 5 hours ER tested everything possible, couldn't find anything/suggested that I take Prilosec for heartburn!I am 69 years old, healthy, never had heartburn!! Merck lists all the warnings.I have had many more "negative symptoms of Fosamax" that I never tied to Fosamax before reading all the comments (cramps, gas, bloating etc) Merck thinks t F 69 47 days
