FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopremia When I was 48, my bone density test showed that my bone density was less than it should be. Over a six month period of taking Fosamax, I became generally exhausted, both physically and mentally, to the point of not being able to do my job well and doing nothing in my spare time. I also began having soft tissue injuries which were peculiar. These have continued. Prior to beginning Fosamax I was remodeling my home myself on the evenings and weekends (hanging doors, installing cabinets, building a carport, sheetrocking, etc). I also usually jog a couple of miles every day. I am a software developer. I thought I was experiencing menopause and wondered how anyone could possibly work til they were 65! After eight months, my prescription ran out and I was two weeks picking it up. Over these two weeks, my level of energy returned. I felt like I was being poisoned to death. I still have strange soft tissue injuries that I don't think are normal. While doing things that I know I am strong enough to do, I often get injured. I sometimes feel like it's where the muslce connects to bone that I have the issue. I don't really know. I have a serious shoulder injury from takaing off a jog bra. Recently I tore a stomach muscle while doing my daily crunches. I think I've had about five of these strange injuries doing things I've always done. F 51 8 months

1  for osteopenia I experienced extreme chest pain. Thought I was having a heart attack. Was taken to the emergency room 2 times. Even had an angiogram, because the doctors couldn't find the source of the pain. I asked them about taking Fosamax in the emergency room, and they said it couldn't cause chest pain. I feel this drug is very dangerous, and strongly recommend that it not be prescribed to anyone. F 54 14 days

1  prevention of osteporosis GERD. Flu like feelings, cough, sore throat, dry eyes, general tiredness. I started Fosamax at the suggestion of by GYN after a bone density test, for preventative measures. I always felt "strange" the day I took the 70 mg dosage but really couldn't pin point what it was. Last summer my eye examination had some questions and they continue to have me come back for rechecks. The worse thing I have experienced is GERD. I didn't connect the "flu" that I seemed to be getting all the time with GERD until I went to an ENT and he made the diagnosis and said it could be the Fosamax but wanted me to wait and see the doctor that perscribed it. Finally in November 05 I took myself off of it and saw my GYN in January and he agreed that I should come off of Fosamax immediately and told me the acid reflux (GERD) could be very dangerous. I have had another episode of the "flu" (sore throat, drainage, aching muscles, etc), the doctor's always treat me with an antibiotic. I went to a walk in clinic and that doctor recognized that I was suffe F 65 5 days

1  osteopenia Thank goodness I found this website; now I know why I was experiencing such pain in my left hip and lower back, and trying to roll over on my side in bed brought tears to my eyes as the pain was excruciating. After sitting in a chair for 30 minutes or so I was so stiff in my hips and back that I had great difficulty standing upright. I felt like I was 90 years old. I had been taking Fosomax for about 18 months and during this time the pain came on gradually so I did not attribute it to the Fosomax. However, after reading all the comments on this site I stopped taking Fosomax almost three months ago and I am pleased to say that I am almost back to normal, with very little pain in my hip, and none at all in my back. I still take calcium tablets and Vitamin D for bone health and will continue to do so. I now assume my aching bones were due to Fosomax. F 68 18 months

1  osteopenia If the person who had "torus mandibularis" will post her e-mail address, I will write to you about a similar thing that happened to me on Actonel. (I'd rather not post my e-mail address; but will write to you if you post yours.) I think I have a little bone spur inside the mouth after taking Actonel for one year. Actonel is essentially the same drug as Fosamax. Let's compare notes! If you don't want to give your e-mail address, just post another comment on this website. Has your dentist said anything further about it? F 54 1 years

3  osteo prevention none - but I'm very irregular about taking it. Doctor first prescribed Actonel - and that caused ringing in my ears. Then the once a month $85 Boniva pill - and I experienced unbelievable intestinal pain for about 4 days. There were times I couldn't stand up. Thinking that perhaps it was not the Boniva, I tried it one more month. Excruciating PAIN!!! If you're looking for an alternative to Fosamax, I don't recommend either Actonel or Boniva. F 60

1  Dr. Order I have servere joint pain, fingers, wrists, elbows knees back feet, I can't even get up and walk with ease and my feet feel like I am walking on rocks they hurt so bad. I have never experience joint pain like this, my fingers hurt so much that I can hardly bend them.I have had arthritis for many years. I am going to take myself off of this drug. I don't think they should just give this medication out without more studies on it. I am still on hormone therayp and doing fine I thought until the dr. took a bone density test that showed I had severe osteoarthrisit but I was not in the pain that I am in right now, and I have had 4 weeks of this drug F 61 4 days

1  Osteoporosis After being on Fosamax for two months, my feet tingle and it is painful to walk; I have been unable to stay asleep at night and waken with feelings of anxiety. I went to my general practitioner thinking I must have diabetic neuropathy or something, to have such severe foot pain, but the doctor said I DON'T have diabetes and all my blood tests came out normal. He didn't even consider complications with Fosamax. Since he couldn't find anything wrong with me, he prescribed a tranquilizer for my anxiety, and sent me on my way. I intend to stop taking Fosamax. Since reading the comments posted on this site, I know what is causing my problem. F 67 2 months

3  Doctor recommended I have some arthritic conditions in my feet, but the stiffness in my hands, arms and legs and not being able to walk once I get up from a chair for a few seconds has me very frustrated. These symtoms seem to have showed up since I started taking Foxamax 6 months ago. My Eyes are dry and that to seems to have become worse in that same time span. I would like to quit taking the drug, to see if my pain goes away. I just don't want to loose every thing that I might have gained in additional bone. I also notice that my complexion is not the same as before. F 59 6 months

2  Osteopenia Shortly after beginning a Fosamax regimen (once a week), I began experiencing mild to moderate stomachaches, heartburn, and constipation. I have been on this regimen now for five months, and have not experienced any improvement in my back pain, which, according to my primary care physician, is due to bulging discs. Interestingly enough, I also experienced a five month plateauing in my weight loss , which, up to this point, had been slow, but steady. I had joined Weight Watchers some ten months before beginning Fosamax, and had managed to lose close to 20 pounds. I have stuck to the regimen, and I exercise two to three times a week at Curves, but have noticed no significant weight loss. I discontinued the use of Fosamax for two weeks and lost two pounds. Coincidence? Maybe, but when I resumed taking the drug, I stopped losing weight and the stomachaches and heartburn increased in frequency . I plan to discontinue the drug and consult my physician.  2  Osteopenia Extreme muscle pain; stiffness; foot and leg cramps. A constant tickle in my throat causing need to continually clear it. Felt terrible!!!!! I was on Fosamax for three weeks, and couldn't take it any more experiencing the horrible side effects I have listed. I have daily aches and pains as a result of mild arthritis and Polymyalgia Rheumatica. However, after taking this drug, I could barely get out of bed in the morning! I thought my other diagnoses were getting worse until I read others experiences on this site. My Dr.said to go off of it for three weeks, and that most women who go back on, the chances of repeat annoying side effects are lessened. I have been back on for a week, and so far, I haven't noticed anything horrible.........we'll give a few more weeks and then give a full update. I think that it's important to follow the instructions on how to take this very specifically. I wonder if I didn't drink enough water, and that's why my throat bothered me. So, as of now, my rating is a 2, but that may change. I'm glad for others' who haven't had any problems, and feel for those who have. F 49 3 days

1  Osteopenia Bony growth inside mouth. I never notice this until being on Actonel for one full year. I noticed this when looking in the mirror and seeing myself on a video. It looked like I was developing an overbite; and it appears that I've gotten some new bone growth just above the upper teeth. I took it upon myself to go off the drug immediately. F 53 1 years

2  Prevention of bone loss Swelling of fingers and toes. At least once a year for the past 5 years I have had swelling in at least one finger or toe. I have been tested for Lyme's Disease, arthritis, Gout and blood disorders, they all came in negative. The only prescribed medication I am taking and have been on during the past five yrs has been Fosamax. F 55 5 years

4  osteoporosis Occasional acid stomach and mildstomach pain, possible weakness or stiffness in legs, but not sure this is from Fosamax. My actual bone mass increased 12% in spine and 6% in hips. I went from -3.1 T score in my spine to -2.3 and -2.1 in hips to -1.7. I will continue to take it because it is helping. F 63 2 years

1  osteopenia Horrible GERD, back pain, neck pain, hair loss. Had to have upper GI tests, now taking Nexium to try and heal. Does the person who posted a 5 and said to talk to your doctor before reading to comments work for Merck? People should trust their doctors but also be self-educated. I wish I had read these posts BEFORE I went to my doctor for my well woman check up. I would have thought very seriously about taking this drug. I've been ill for 3 months and when I went in to see my doctor in early Nov., I was a perfectly happy, healthy woman. I can't believe this drug isn't hurting everyone who takes it in some way. It's dangerous! Don't be afraid of doing research BEFORE you let a doctor prescribe any drug. The patient information provided by Merck isn't complete and lies. I took the drug exactly how it was prescribed and still got very, very ill. Merck minimizes the side effects. F 56 1 months
