FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia SEVERE MUSCLE CRAMPS AND CHARLEYHORSE in my calves and thighs EVERY night, waking me instantly and making me fly out of bed to try to stop the pain. Also, numbness and tingling in feet and lower legs. I am extremely athletic, so none of these symptoms are common for me----they started about two months after I started taking Fosamax. My doctor says there is no connection, but nothing else in my life or exercise program has changed. If I put off taking my weekly fosamax for an extra week, the muscle cramps lessen. F 58 10 days

1  peri-menapause to prevent bone loss Took my first dose on Sunday morning and by 11 pm I felt achy with a stiff neck and headache. When I went to stand up, I was surpised at how achy my shoulders and back were. I went to bed, and sleeping was a horror. I couldn't turn or move without a pain. In the morning my neck, shoulders, elbows, and hips were hurting and stiff. Not to mention my back was so tight I counldn't take a normal breath and the headache and pressure behind my eyes was not good either. It's now Tuesday and I'm still very very sore. I don't plan on taking it again. I spoke with my mom, and she told me she took it years ago and had basically the same reaction. F 44 1 days

2  Osteopenia Severe Bloating, Constipation, Gas. Achy & Tired. Thought it might be perimenopause symptoms. Never attributed to Fosomax until I read this site. Symptoms all started shortly after starting Fosomax. What happens if I discontinue? I now take 1500 mg calcium daily & eat daily yogurt, have also incorporated calcium rich foods to regular diet - all new habits learned from the 6 week Bone Density Book. Have not had another Density test, family history of severe osteoporis, my baseline was -2.1 - not sure if I'm getting better or worse. Haven't reached menopause yet. F 52 16 months

1  Osteop I am 53. Taking Foxamax for 4 years. 2 years ago I began to get stiff in every joint. I could not roll over in bed. Doc said RA (rheumatoid arthritis). My blood did not show RA. Took methotrexit. Felt better. A year ago I tried to get of Methotrexite, the stiffness returned with a vengance. 10 weeks ago my father died, I forgot nearly every day to take meds. Remarkably....the stiffness came for a bit, but went away. So I haven't taken anything....am a bit stiff, but nothing like not being able to roll over in bed....and now I read this. So, I am off to the doctor to have a "conversation". F 53 4 years

1  osteopedia dizziness; lethargy; confusion; weakness in hands; bump on nerve in left hand that when touched my fingers tingle and go numb; nerve problem in left big toe all after 3 months on Fosamax; and constipation. I complained to my orthopedist about my symptoms, told her I took myself off Fosamax and her reply was, "I never had a patient have these problems or heard of such side effects. You really need to be on it." Obviously she was sold a bill of goods, hasn't even read the drug company's material and she owes me a 30 dollar copay. In addition she has no idea what my bump is in my hand. I'm crossing her and this drug off my list. F 52 3 months

1  osteopenia diagnosis Within 12-14 hrs of my first and only dose of Fosamax, I experienced debilitating hip pain and required assistence to walk. Within 36 hrs after the dose, I could only take shallow breaths because of severe pain in my sternum and thorasic spine. Other severe pain sites were my lower back and one hand. I have discovered too late that this drug causes the symptoms it is reported to prevent. F 56 1 days

1  Osteopenia Extreme shooting pain in lower legs, extreme knee pain, bloating and weight gain, very dry hair and hair breakage I wish I had figured out how awful this drug is long before 8 months of taking it. Fosamax made me feel about 30 years older than I am. The pain in my legs was unbelievable. I could barely go up and down stairs. My hair looked fried and was breaking off near the roots. I was not having anything done to it at the salon, just regular haircuts, and my hair has never been dry. I stopped taking Fosamax about 4 weeks ago and feel so much better. Even my hair is getting better. I cringe thinking this stuff is going to stay in my body for 10 years. F 50 8 months

1  Osteopenia I have been on Fosamax for about 10 years. I have been having left shoulder pain, so bad I can not get dressed. Can not sleep well at night for hurting so bad, can not turn over in bed. Hurting for about 3 months now, went to the ortho doctor said it was bursitis and gave me a cortisone inj, but it didn't get any better, so I started taking an antibiotic and skipped taking my Fosamax for that week and it seemed to get alittle better, but I taken my Fosamax this morning and now my upper arm and shoulder is aching again and the movement is once again limited. I wanted to google Fosamax to see if anyone else was having the same problems, and low and behold I am very suprised at the people that are having the same symptoms. Also about 2 years ago my right thumb started dislocating and is very stiff. I am very limited on using it and now my left arm. The doctor has done xrays on both my shoulder and thumb and said the bones looked fine and he was very puzzled about my thumb, he just said h I am a nurse and right handed at that. I can not use my right thumb nor my left arm. It has effected my job. No more Fosamax for me...... F 52 10 years

1  hip osteopenia Complete immobility due to extreme muscle pain within 24 hours of first 70mg dose. Discontinued use after single dose. Muscle pain mimics hip injury in addition to back/neck injury. A week later I still cannot reach my feet. Putting on socks/shoes/pants is nothing short of torture. Still driving to work but lifting right leg to brake using right hand at the knee. F 58 1 days

1  Osteopenia Although it can't be proven without more investigation, I recently removed myself from Fosamax when reading a medical article recently advising that Fosamax was cited as causing atrial fibrilation in some patient. Having been diagnosed with A.Fib about four years ago, I decided that this may be connected to the Fosamax. Since the end of April when I quit taking this drug, I have had very little episodes of A.Fib - at least a 90% drop in symptoms. I don`t think this is a coincidence. I would like to hear if anyone else is currently in this situation. Fosamax provided little improvement to my osteopenia. My last bone density test indicated a continued deterioration in my left hip and spine. F 68 10 years

1  Osteoporosis Pain in arms, buttocks, groin, hips, arms, knees, calves, shins, hives on upper torso, feeling of "something" crawling on me. Recently had cortisone in L arm and steroid in R arm and after 3 months of limited movement (getting dressed was a painful ordeal) my arms are much better. Painful to walk after sitting for awhile with the need to stand in one place until pain subsides. Knee pain was so severe that I had Arthroscopic surgery on both knees, which did little to eliminate pain in L knee. My ribs become dislocated easily and I get muscle strains frequently. Doctor recommended P.T. but therapist dismissed me after 6 sessions because nothing improved. I stopped taking Fosamax 2 years ago when I read about Osteonecrosis but doctor convinced me, after 10 months off the drug, that I needed bone protection for my severe Osteo, so I started it again then discontinued for good 2 months ago. I am also on a nutritional program and am feeling much better and hope for continual improvement. My L knee which was so bad I was considering a knee replacement has improved so much I can now bend it and walk down stairs w/o pain. Groin/hip/buttocks pain are better as well as the hives/rash. I will take my chances w/o Fosamax or any other bisphosphonate just to have my life back. Merck needs to be held accountable. I only hope we can all get back to who we were before Fosamax.  1  osteopenia Doctor prescribed a low dosage back in 2001. About a year later, I started experiencing stiffness in the hip and shoulder areas. Decided I needed more exercise, but that made it worse. Simple bending and moving became a chore. In fact, the soreness and stiffness made it difficult to get out of bed or a chair after sitting for 20 or so minutes. The doctor diagnosed it as polymyalgia, and he put me on prednisone. I stopped taking the Fosamax as the side effects matched my soreness and stiffness of the shoulder and hip areas. I suspected then that Fosamax was at the crux of the problem. It took about a year to get back to normal. Now my new doctor wants me to start taking Fosamax(70mg)once a week. She feels that the polymyalgia is not related to the Fosamax, but after reading the comments on this website and seeing many of my symtoms listed, I won't chance it. Instead, I will go the natural way--eat right, take calcium with vitamin D, and buy the osteoball for bone density exercises. F 65 1 years

1  For procautionary measures leg cramps, jaw pain, headaches, belching, chronic fatigue, sinus infection, nausea, abdominal pain, dizziness I had sever pain in my lower back and right hip so went to the chirapractor to have it x-rayed. It showed a calcium buildup on the pulvic bone. Had x-rays about four years ago and it was not there then. The headaches came within 2to3 hours after taking Fosamax and would last severals days. This did not seem normal to me to did some research on the web. I was encouraged by family members to quit. The FDA recently notified medical professionals that these "bone builders" can cause excruciating pain. I feel much better since "cold turkey'n it. It needs to be removed from the market.
