FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis Headache, bloating, gas, face pain, jaw pain and neck ache I took the generic form of fosamax for 4 months. I developed headaches that began about 6 weeks after the first dose. The headaches were dull but never went away. My neck hurt as did my face. I have stopped taking it 3 weeks ago and the face and jaw have stopped hurting. My neck is still stiff and I still have head pain, especially on the top of my head. I had my sinuses x-rayed today and show no sign of infection. Next week a CT Scan to see if it could be something else causing the head pain. I think it is the medication. Hope as the weeks go on the symptoms will go away completly. F 22 weeks

1  osteoporosis Severe pain in shoulders and lower back.Extreme nausea, burning up,then freezing cold plus "internal shakes".Digestive problems including stomach cramps bloating and constipation.Finger joints swelled and had muscle pain all over my body. I felt so well when I went to the doctor. The diagnosis of osteoporosis was a shock but I trust my doctor and I willingly took the pill.24 hours later I felt as if I had aged 40 years.I had to take a week off work [schoolteacher],so I am used to "soldiering on" when feeling under the weather. My homoepath called it toxic when I phoned her but that was the day after I took the pill. Then thank the Lord I found this website. They went in the bin.  1  to try and increase bone density I am a 56 year old active and healthy female who decided to try fosamax to combat diagnosed osteopenia. I took my first pill and less than 18 hours later I could bearly get out of bed the next morning. I experienced severe lower back and hip pain and I know it was brought on by the Fosamax. I was so shocked by the pain that I searched the internet for some answers and found this site. I will never take another Fosamax again. It is now two days since I took my first pill and I am just now starting to feel normal. Everyone should be warned by their physician about these side effects. When I asked my doctor about side effects he told me, "just be sure you read all the possible side effects before you take Fosamax". I'll be looking for a new M.D. after this experience. F 56 1 days

1  Osteporsis I had taken Fosamax for about 4 years with no apparent side effects. I started taking the generic about three months ago and after a month have had lower back, Rt hip and leg pain, especially at night. I could not figure out why it seemed to get better and then would worsen again. Now I realize that the pain increased after taking my weekly dose. I found this web site and stopped taking the drug. My pain is lessening and I can sleep without all the Tylenol and Ibuprophen. I have started a daily walking program in addition to calcium. No more Fosamax for me! F 64 4.5 years

5  Osteoporosis None I have taken the daily for 14 years and I am in good health and look much younger than my age. I am on tennis teams, swim every day, walk, and ride my bike several times a week. My teeth are excellent. My bone density tests each time have shown improvement to the extent I was able to stop Fosamax two weeks ago. I will get another bone density in two years and if I back track I will start it up again. F 69 14 years

1  Osteopenia (dexa-scan done) Have been on Fosamax for almost 7 months. Having a very hard time walking up stairs, walking in general, getting into & out of my car is a real struggle, just getting up from the chair is difficult I'm so stiff, can't sleep at night my legs and joints are just aching. Have a burning feeling in my throat. Feel very tired all the time. My life is not like it use to be. I'm 56 yrs., but feel like 95yrs. old. Just found out the side effects of Fosamax and described to call my doctor and she found it very unusual. Told her I want off this medication NOW!!! Hope I feel better soon. I WANT MY LIFE BACK... How long will it take?? Recently, I have found more con than pro about this medication, why aren't doctors up todate on the side effects? I'm so glad I stumbled on this website. THANK YOU!!!  1  Osteoporosis Severe stiff neck with pain up back of head, lower back pain My symptoms came on 1 month after starting Fosamax. I reported symptoms to my MD and he assured me they couldn't be from the Fosamax but I could stop for 2 weeks and see if the symptoms went away. The pain lessened but did not go away completely so he had me come in for x-rays and said I had degenerative arthritis in my neck & lower back and wanted me to continue the Fosamax. After 6 months I quit again for 2 months and my lower back pain went completely away but I still had some neck pain so he told me to try the Fosamax again. This time the severe neck pain and lower back pain returned within one week of starting the Fosamax. My MD still does not believe that Fosamax is responsible for my pain but he has suggested that I stop again for a few weeks. F 66 9 months

1  Osteoporosis Pain in my long bones, spine, cramps in feet and hands after first and last tablet. I will never use any bone-killing drug like this again. After experiencing severe side effects from Fosamax, I found that hese drugs work by killing the blood vessels to the bones, preventing bone loss by limiting the circulation of blood. Over time, the bones nearly die, crystalize and shatter like glass. Drug companies state that the drugs lose their effectiveness over time (ridiculous lie) and/or that the bones would have been in worse shape. These drugs are big profit centers for the drug makers. Their motivation is not to heal women. Most women do not question the drugs they are prescribed (easy targets). These drugs kill bones! The accompanying literature state "necrosis" so that if after taking the drugs your bones die, you cannot sue them! I have found a better remedy. It is healthy. The remedy is to raise the ph in your body, making it slightly less acidic. You do this by following an "alkaline diet" (look it up). As we age, our bodies become more acidic. To balance the low ph, our bodies take calcium compounds F 56 1 days

5  Severe Osteoporosis I have mild joint pain, but it is impossible to say that is from the Fosamax. I attribute it to the aging process and my strenuous exercise. I do need annual upper endoscopy because of a family history of cancer and it does show mild esophogeal erosions, so now I take Prilosec as a protectant. I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis in my forties, after ovarian cancer surgery (and, thus, instant menopause, with loss of hormones) and chemotherapy. The Fosamax has made an unbelievable improvement in my bones and I no longer have osteoporosis, but only some osteopenia. I wonder if there could be other reasons all these women experience such problems? I am afraid NOT to continue taking it! F 56 13 years

1  Osteoporosis diagnosis I have decided not to take this medication after reading this website & other literature. It does sound scary. My MD wants me to take Fosamax for 5 years. My ND (Naturopath Doctor) never said not to take Fosamax. She did state that Vitamin K is supposed to help with osteoporosis of the spine, in particular. I didn't ask my MD about the Vitamin, assuming he wouldn't be as up to date on those things as the Naturopath. I decided to take a supplement with Vitamin K & other vitamins & minerals prescribed by the Naturopath. I plan to have new bone scan in 3 - 6 months & see how things look, but I doubt I will ever go on this med. Am also increasing weight-bearing exercise. F 65 0 days

1  osteoporosis Belching, GERD, gastric distress, gas, severe leg and hip pain, burning deep bone pain in left leg, lump formed on left wrist but went away after a week, severe fatigue, severe hip pain when standing for more than 10 minutes......Very difficult to turn over in bed due to hip pain. I am also unable to stay asleep at night because of sever leg pain....I am on prescribed medicine for the heart burn/burping/GERD (Zegerid and zantac)but these meds have helped very little. I was on prescribed pain medicine but that medicine caused more problems. I use a heating pad or ice pack for my leg pain when it gets intolerable. Each week the symptoms get worse. I felt like I was 91 instead of 61. I am scared of Fosomax and stopped taking it for the second time a week ago. Each time I stopped the Fosomax the pains in my legs and hip began to vanish within four days. Eight days have gone by and I have hardly any pain. I will not take this bisphosphonate drug again. Actonel and Evista also caused severe leg pain. I will go the natural route with calcium and Vitamin D in Caltrate, yogurt and milk, weight lifting and walking for weight bearing exercise. Also I will get into the sunshine for the natural vitamin D. I appreciate this web site for its information for the public. F 61 2 days

1  Osteoporosis Dizzy spells, clammy, pale, muscle pain, joint pain, loss of vision in right eye, fatigue, constipation, stiffness, blurred vision in both eyes and feel older than ever before. I have been taking Fosamax for 4 years. I was not aware of the side effects of Fosamax until recently. I read about the side effects in a news article. I am a very healthy person who takes great care of my body. I was active and able to do most actitivies before I began Fosamax. I have seen more doctors now from taking Fosamax in the past year and a half and run more tests than I have ever had before even for my age. All tests come back negative, not being able to find any answers to the cause of my problems. When I read the article and the doctors could give me no answer to these newly developed problems, I realized that Fosamax could be the cause of it all. I hope this comment makes people become more aware of how dangerous Fosamax can and could be if taken. F 83 4 years

1  diagnosed with osteo pena Started yesterday a few hours after taking it with swelling of two fingers which had a little arthritis, then it travelled to my knees and I cannot walk without pain, and I cannot straighten my left leg. Today my hand is better. I stand at work all day and I don't know how to make the swelling go down. I have tried ibuprofen, aleve, and salt bath. This DOES NOT FEEL LIKE MY BODY! My parents take it without side effects. They seem to question my problems with it. F 50 2 weeks

1  early bone loss I am experiencing low back pain that should have resolved by now. I only just started suspecting fosamax the last week. The pain and stiffness is centered in my low back and groin, with sciatica on rt side. I decided to stop taking fosamax. I've started seeing a chiro (2 visits so far) for the 1st time ever in my life, and he has found problems that we're working on, so I'm waiting to see how that turns out before talking to my MD about stopping the fosamax. This is worse pain than I've ever had for such a lengthy time. Very debilitating and life-altering. Like others have said, I feel 100 years old. I normally am very active, but find the pain has very much slowed me down. F 55 1 years

3  preventative! Between this and Diovan (BP med) I guess I'm getting hit both ways! Tired, joint stiffness, hot spot in roof of mouth, sore throat etc. etc. I was prescribed Fosamax more as a preventative - I have had 3 normal bone density tests (the proper one)at the 2nd one, I showed increased bone density BEFORE taking Fosamax....it was at that time Dr. suggest I take it since: I am slender, white, had a hysterectomy at 40 & the dreaded "I smoke" sin! I have had my recent bone density this year (2008) normal, don't need another for 5 years, I cannot remember a broken bone in my female said of the family, and believe me, I have a huge family.....I think this stuff can go in the trash. I think I read somewhere as to the effectiveness or lack of, after 5 years anyway(?) I've had it! F 58 6 years

1  osteoporosis I am reading and writing because my mom, who is 79, took Fosamax for many years (maybe 8 or 10?). She doesn't take it any more because the dr says she is ok now. BUT about 3-4 yrs ago her toes started bending and lapped over the tops of each other and it has caused her a lot of foot pain. She had 2 toes amputated in Sept 08 that were pretty much growing sideways. Besides the issues with her feet, she is now 5'1" and used to be 5'7". Can't say that Fosamax has made a believer out of me. Since my mom has osteoporosis, I had my first scan 2 yrs ago, at age 54, and was diagnosed with osteopenia and osteoporosis....no surprise. I refused to take the Fosamax, Boniva, or Actonil and decided to take a good grade food-based calcium that I get at a health food store instead. It is calcium from food, so digests easily. My bone scan recently showed "significantly improved" and I now have NO osteoporosis, and only one area has osteopenia! Take CALCIUM! I wonder if my mom's outcome would have been different with calcium instead of Fosamax...???!!!??? 79 8 days

1   aching muscles, stiff joints, heartburn While taking this drug I became so stiff and sore I felt 80 instead of 55. I went to two specialists about pain in my shoulders but they could not find a problem. When I began experiencing heartburn, I thought about Fosomax and read about side effects and immediately quit taking the drug. I still have the aches and pains but not as severely. I rarely experience heartburn anymore. I continue to exercise regularly (as I had been when I was taking Fosomax) and hope that someday this stiffness and pain will be gone. I am now 59 & have been off Fosomax for at least a year. Can anyone offer me encouragement that I will feel better? F 59 3 years
