FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  osteoporosis and osteopenia Small discharge of fine rock salt like stones in urine. I initially took the Fosamax without any of the usual side effects but noticed small stones in my urine. I stopped taking the Fosamax for a month and my urine returned to normal. Last week I again took a Fosamax and again saw the small stones. I'm not taking it again even though I haven't heard of this side effect from any one else. F 53 3 days

1  Bone density scan showed bone loss Severe, chronic pain in forearms; couldn't straighten up after sitting a short time; pain across shoulders and upper chest. Did not equate intense muscle? tendon? bone? pain in both forearms to Fosamax usage until I found this website. About 2 wks after stopping Fosamax the intense pain (could hardly move my arms, especially at night) peaked and subsided just a bit. Same with the stiffness in my lower back. Three months later, after no significant improvement, I started taking FISH OIL (Omega-3) SUPPLEMENTS and CUT MY OMEGA-6 (corn oil, etc.) intake in half. In about 6 weeks I started to feel major improvement! It took about 8 months, but the pain in my forearms is 95% better, the stiffness in my back is mostly gone, and I think it's helping my mental faculties, too. Still some pain across the front of my shoulders, but overall, I'm feeling MUCH better! Give the Omega-3 thing a try--it's an anti-inflammatory--but they say you MUST cut back on Omega-6 oils. Regarding Fosamax? DON'T TAKE IT! If you're on it, GET OFF OF IT! I'm convinced it's dangerous. The FDA isn't looking out for us. They're looking ou F 52 6 months

1  osteopenia After taking fosomax once weekly for four months, I started to experience some tightness in the middle of my chest with no reason for it. Just sitting watching TV or driving and the pain would grip me. Lasted several seconds. Left me with the feeling that I wanted to "burp". No burning or indigestion, but a very heavy feeling in my middle chest. Have stopped taking it today. Also, am experiencing pain in the neck that was never there before. Will not continue even if DR. advises Try to help yourself naturally - Calcium with D and 30 minutes of easy walking or walking in place with a 30 minute tape in front of the TV. Helped my legs and stamina. F 68 4 months

1  osteopenia I've been taking this drug for seven months and started with muscle and joint aches a few months ago. I never connected it with Fosamax until recently when I read an article about users could get muscle and joint aches. These pains increased to the point where I would wake up in the night and could not go back to sleep. My hands and lower legs would actually pulsate with achiness. Just stopped taking this drug and have not noticed any change yet. Am going to a rheumatologist tomorrow. F 57 7 days

1  Osteopenia I took my first Fosamax on a Saturday morning. On Sunday morning I could hardly get out of bed. My back was very sore, but the worst problem was my left hand. I have osteoarthritis in my left thumb joint and it was so sore I could not use the hand. On Sunday night I got the chills and hurt all over my body. Monday the thumb joint was swollen and still very very sore. I have a pretty high pain tolerance but this is terrible. I will not take another Fosamax and will opt for healther eating and exercise. Do not take this drug! 62 1 days

1  osteoporosis prevention At first I had pain in my left shoulder that decreased the range of motion by about half. Next it was lower and middle spine pain, pain across both shoulders and neck, and very strangely my forearms and wrists. I have been doing yoga daily for the past year and a half with weight bearing exercise a couple of times a week, and couldn't believe I felt so awful all of a sudden. But I realized it wasn't the exercise -- it had to be the Fosamax. Finding this site and one at gotbones.com really confirmed for me that this was the case. In reading the comments here, I am really angered by the ignorance of the medical profession and the greed of the drug companies to keep this horrible drug on the market so that more men and women can suffer needlessly. The fact that it has a half life of 10 years or more, meaning it is in your body virtually forever, makes me even angrier. Even worse, they now want to recommend treating younger and younger groups of people (spelled more PROFITS) with bisphosphonates. F 58 9 weeks

1  Osteoporosis HORRIBLE!! Aching all over, constant crying/worsening depression, constant ringing of the ears. Also, sleep problems, avoiding people and activities, blurred vision. The most heartbreaking factor in all of this is not knowing the cause of all of these mystefying symptoms, and blaming myself for being "weak". I only hope I will someday return to normal. This is just another sad example of drug companies who are just out to make money, and couldn't care less about all the suffering and pain they are causing. We've all been brainwashed into believing that we "Need" these drugs; ductors included! F 52 4 months

1  osteoporosis Severe headache, muscle aches, pain in the legs so bad I could not sleep, nausea, pain in the ribs and back, hip pain, jaw pain I had taken one dose of Boniva 1 month prior to starting Fosamax and had worse symptoms with the Boniva, so I though a lower does of the Fosamax would lessen the symptoms. I was wrong. Same symptoms, increased pain. I felt fine before starting theses medications, now had felt terrible x 6 weeks! I cannot take this medication again. F 66 3 weeks

4  Osteopenia A little extra gassiness Of course the published side effects worried me, but Mayo Clinic reports that osteonecrosis is quite rare, and usually occurs in cancer patients and people who have had dental procedures like extractions. My dexascan after 2 years showed considerable improvement. I also exercise, lift weights, eat greens and yogurt F 63 3 years

1  Moderate Bone Loss Shoulder, neck and back pain, arm weakness, jaw pain, upper gastric distress, belching I have been on this medication for approximately 5 - 6 months. The symptoms I've experienced came on gradually -- but now they're definitely a problem and seem to be getting worse. This neck/back pain is terrible...and I have a high pain tolerance. The pain in my jaw is like it's out of place, and I have pain when eating and trying to chew. I looked up the side effects of this drug right after an "attack" with severe back pain, arm pain, a little chest pain and gas..belching, and found this website. Like a lot of you, I thought I was having a heart attack. Too many of us have the same symptoms for this to be anything else. I'm quitting the drug and talking to my doctor next week. F 60 5 months

1  Bone Density After several years of taking fosomax, my aunt (who was otherwise quite healthy, comes from great genetic stock) is dying from myelodysplastic syndrome - when your bone marrow stops doing its job... I know in my heart it was caused by Fosomax. Fosomax targets the bones and there are no long term studies regarding prolonged use of Fosomax and its impact on blood marrow. She's been on it for many years but otherwise healthy. Merck, if you are reading this....you're going down. F 83 7 years

5  osteoporosis Great improvement!! I can't say enough good about Fosamax. I had serious osteoporosis about 10 years ago when I started taking it (due to very early hysterectomy and medications)and the bone loss has slowly but completely been replaced. I love the stuff!! F 63 10 years

1  Osteoporosis Severe pain in the rib cage and hips. A fracture in a thoracic vertebra. A "burning" feeling in the heart. I've made a lot of research on the net after stopping taking Fosamax. It's a fact that Fosamax can cause fractures. It's also a fact that you must not take Fosamax if you suffer from vitamin D deficiency. A doctor told me that if you take Fosamax AND suffer from vitamin D deficiency it'll accellerate an irreversible loss of bone mass. I suffered from vitamin D deficiency which I didn't know. From my research I now know that doctors should do a blood test to see if the patient suffers from vitamin D deficiency or other diseases. F 61 8 months

1  Osteopenia Foot pain; back pain; knee pain; elbow pain; stiff, painful, swollen fingers during the night and all morning; nausea; reflux; severe dental and jaw pain after spending time out in the cold. Merck has a website, http://www.fosamax-information.com/html/sideeffects.html, on which they tell you all the horrifying side-effects. I already knew about the joint and muscle pain from looking up Fosamax before I took it. What I didn't know was that the pain, stiffness, and swelling wouldn't stop when I stopped taking the drug. That very important fact is LEFT OUT of Merck's warnings. I reported my side effects to the FDA, and I hope you will, too, at https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/I am going to refuse to ever take Fosamax again. F 51 3 weeks

1  osteo i had every possible side effect imaginable. e r trips now after 4 yrs,,i still have symptoms from then,,shoulder, neck pain,,,burning feet etc..all caused and started when i put these terrible poison pills in my system..and last yr my gyno gave me a pres. for once a yr foxamax ,,,which went into the trash,,,I cannot believe they allow these meds like fosamax, actonel, boniva, and evista..to stay on the market,,,aall i can say is someone is making out from all this and the fda just closes their eyes to everything...all these meds belong in the garbage and would not even give it to a rat. the fda should take them off the market....but wont if millions of dollars are in the making. the heck with the outcome..  1  osteopenia SEVERE joint pain. Shoulder, elbow, knee. Aching ankles. Debilitating pain in rib cage! Pain in elbow is so bad I can barely lift a cup of coffee. Thank God for this website, I thought I was either crazy or dying. Too bad it took 7 months to figure out what was happening. I called my doctor tell him I was stopping the medication and spoke to the Triage Nurse who had the same type of side effects when she was on Fosamax. I would like to know why doctors don't make these side effects more well known to patients since it's been an issue from day one. After suffering for half a year, I'm looking forward to feeling like a human being again. I just hope it doesn't take too long. M 47 7 months

1  osteoperosis very painful and frightening chest pains - the Emergency Room thought I was having a heart attack and I was admitted overnight. They wanted to do an angiogram, but I insisted on the least invasive proceedure so they did a stress test with me on a treadmill - all was fine with my heart. I took an over-the-counter medication Prilosec to reduce acid. Came off of that after 4 months becuase I read that it caused bone loss, and then developed chronic cystitis which I am struggling with now. F 63 120 days
