FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia tingling and numbness in hands and fingers - muscle pain and weakness in all my joints. I have been taking this medicine weekly for 3 months. Immediately had muscular aches and pains. Thought I might have repetitive motion illness as I was working on several projects involving heavy use of arms and back. Dr prescribed anti-inflammatory drug. No use - pains are still there. After reading this website I have decided to stop taking Fosomax. I still have pain after 8 days without this medicine. I'll check back and let you know how long it takes to recover from this awful stuff. I've decided to take my chances treating my bones with calcium/d/magnesium and exercise. F 55 3 months

3  Ostopenia After taking it for only a month I noticed pain in my tail bone - only if I press on the bottom of the bone. It felt like I bruised my tail bone. I had it Xrayed to make sure was not a break or tumor -- nothing showed. I think I may stop for a few months and see if it goes away. I exercise regularly -- weight bearing -- and eat a healthy diet and have taken vitamins and calcium for years. I fall into the category of a small boned women. Looking a my mother who is not 83 years old -- and my grandmother who lived to 94 -- they did not have any problems with their bones. I have always been a skeptic about any drugs -- but the doctor has really pushed this one -- I think I'll just take my chances and take more calcium -- drink more milk etc. If the discomfort on my tail bone disappears -- I'll know it was the Fosamx.  1  osteopenia/fmaily history took Fosamax, 35 mg 1 time week for @ 4 months. not problems noted at all. then in middle april one week i realized i could not get up from a squat position without crawling over to the bed and heaving up with my arms. the previous week, i had had no diffiuclty getting up using the strenght of my legs. I thought i had not been working out enough or consistently and started going to the gym more regularly and working harder. Not only did this not help with muscle strength, but i was getting weaker, but still did not connect this to fosamax because the only side effects i was told to watch out for was the stomach reactions. then, late May i experienced muscle, joint and bone pain that gradually had me on crutches. this continued through early Juy. extreme tenderness on the bottoms of my feet, feeling as if i were an old, old woman, in tears at times. had to change postions in the car to get out, rest, then attemtpt to stand on my feet. legs gave out twice, so had to stand from a sitting postion at work, test my legs for support, then walk very carefully. the Read ALL info re: side effects so you can catch them early adn not suffer like I did for 2 months F 55 3 months

5   Seen people with osteoporosis Please listen to what your doctor says about your health condition before reading these comments as everyone is different and therefore respond differently to the same medication. Fosamax is a great drug and I've seen heaps of people whose bones were kept strong and healthy because of it. If it weren't for Fosamax, they wouldn't be able to walk around and do that sort of things as they do so now. If you do find you have any complaints or feel that you experience any side effects, it's always best to tell the doctor and he'll help you figure out an alternative. Booklet instructions are always a great helping tool, and it's good to follow the guidelines on Fosamax, e.g. take half an hour before breakfast and a big glass of water, etc. Please don't just stop taking it just because you hear other people do so, they could be causing alot of problems to their health because of it .. don't make the same mistake!  2  osteopenia due to hyperthyroid Muscle aches and joint pain especially in am and evening. Difficulty to get up after sitting...knees ache back/neck etc. Diarrhea, visual blurriness at times. Insomnia...specifically falling asleeep and waking up unable to get back to sleep. Anxiousness in evenings. It just occurred to me today that my problems are related to the Fosamax. The problems I was experiencing closely parallel the same sympotms I was experiencing when my thyroid levels were elevated. I first I thought my thyroid levels were out of whack again..but the blood levels returned fine. So, as I researched Fosamax....it appears that most of my probles very well could stem from the Fosamax. I am going to talk with my physician...but I am concerned about taking the drug...as well as not taking it. F 48 6 months

1  Bone Loss (related to thyroid meds) Initially swelling in the hands and also the ankles, difficulty in swallowing. General feeling of lethargy within 1 week of start date, stiffness in the joints and muscle aches. Over the last week extreme stiffness in the knee joint with swelling, difficulty in walking. Since I couldn't reach my doctor, I was advised by the pharmacist to STOP immediately once I relayed the symptoms. I see my doctor tomorrow. It really makes you wonder how the heck they test these F 51 6 weeks

1  osteoporosis PLEASE READ THE PAMPHLET INCLUDED WITH THE MEDICATION!!! I had most of the side effects related with taking this drug. Flu-like symptoms with extreme joint, muscle and bone pain along with vomiting. Also, had a rash/hives develop. Taking the medication has wiped me out for at least 3 full days. Please be cautious, if your body is sensitive to medication. F 56 1 days

1  osteoporosis Extreme pain in upper and lower legs, itchiness in legs. Within hours of taking my weekly Fosamax pill, I experienced a sudden weakness in my legs and extreme pain. I had extensive tests ordered by an endocrinologist. Since all tests came back normal, the doctor's diagnosis was that I had had a severe reaction to the bisphosphonate in the Fosamax. Despite discontinuing the use of Fosamax, I have continued to have severe leg pain for 5 weeks. The doctor could not tell me when I would have relief. I had previously had mild leg pain in the first few months of taking the medicine, however this extreme pain came on suddenly after 23 months on the medicine. Bone density scans indicated an actual decrease in bone density during the time I was taking Fosamax - a change from osteopenia to osteoporosis. My doctor advised that I not take this medicine again. I have no intention of taking it again; I think this is not only an ineffective drug but a dangerous one as well. F 56 23 months

1  as a supposed preventative measure joint and all over muscle and bone aches, with mild gastric upset This is the same pharmaceutical company[MERCK]that manufactured the killer anti-inflammatory that was taken off the market not long ago. The adverse effects of Fosamax are too many and too serious, some of which are even FATAL, such as kidney failure. I think it's mostly another scheme of the pharmaceutical industry to make money at any cost. As for now, my general health is really good for my age, so I am stopping this horrible medication. I'm too young to experience the Fosamax-induced geriatric sickness. F 54 2 months

1  bone loss in both hips I actually started fosamax just this morning. After reading the below side effects, I do not believe I will be taking another. I already have pain and really do not want to experience any other side effects from a drug. Are we trying to increase our way of living? All the generations before us did not have these type things available to them and yes they may have suffered from OP and lots of other diseases, but they led an uninhibited life without causing other things to be disrupted in their systems. I had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and have been on natural compounded hormones for the last 6 years. From the bone density test, I now have loss in both hips (quite a bit so the doctor says). I am already experiencing severe pain in my hips, back and legs, so I am not sure I want to take on the challenge of more pain. Can anyone give any information for weight loss during this trying time? Thanks to everyone for the info. Pam Jones F 48 1 days

1  bone density/osteop I started with Actonel, had terrible side effects, for the 4 wks,,then my Dr switched me to Fosamax, which had worse side effects..I had a headache, different aches and pains. sweats, diarrhea, shoulder, back pains now I have stomach cramps,,distention, terrible insomnia, and latest twitching legs and tight toes like you would not believe. I hope this wears off.I only had 3 wks of Fosamax and wonder if anyone knows how long this feeling lasts....I would like to feel like my own self again, and not this ill feeling..I would like to know if anyone knows how long this stays with one, I think this product should be removed from the market, and who knows what the long term will do to ones body, if this is what short term does..I will take my chances also with good nutrition, exercise and Calcium/D.and never take this Fosamax or Actonel again.  1  osteoporosis immediate pins and needles in legs, chronic numbness and neuropathy below waist, Raynaud's phenomenon in both feet Stopped taking drug after 4 days symptoms have continued for over 2 months with no identified cause. Just had a complete spinal MRI to rule out MS and demyelinating disorders, but neurologist says these are unlikely on basis of physical exam. I had no symptoms before taking Fosamax, and I am positive there is a connection. There is no medical remedy. Will never take this drug again. F 40 4 days

1  Osteoporosis At first, no side effects. Then I started experiencing pain on left side of my body, but only when I was laying down. Thought the symptoms would eventually subside the longer I was taking Actonel, but in fact they got worse, and it was getting very difficult sleep through the night, as the pain would wake me up every night. I was on the once-weekly dose. Additionally, I was getting pain in some odd places; e.g., under my jaw and under my left ear. I stopped taking Actonel last week and do not plan to take it any more. A girlfriend of my is taking Fosamax but has not experienced any side effects. However, I recently discovered a natural supplement, Femarelle, which shows some promising results in regard to easing menopausal symptoms and preventing bone loss. Studies have shown that it actually increases bone density, so I am giving it a try. Just F 50 9 months

1  osteopenia Unusual, intense headaches. My bones felt very strange--very negative feeling. Then I had violent uncontrollable diarrhea that lasted about five hours. The best way I can describe the experience is that I felt poisoned. I had followed all directions precisely. My doctor has now recommended Actonel, but presented it as though it was a happy little ad on TV. I told her F 56 1 days
