FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  osteopenia I have taken Fosamax for three years and my recent bone density test showed that I am now in normal range. However, my whole body hurts! We bought a new mattress set because my back hurt so much every morning, but that didn't help. Recently, my wrists have been so painful and my hands have no strength. I can hardly sit down and then have a hard time standing again, because my knees hurt. The muscles in my legs and arms are also sore. Today, I finally went to the doctor and told him that I felt very sorry for myself with all the aches and pains. He decided that perhaps the Fosamax could be causing the problem and has told me to stop taking it for four weeks. After visiting this website, I am starting to think that this may indeed be the problem. F 59 3 years

1  to CURE low bone density i was told only took it for 6 days, when a protrusion began to develop on my left EYE! i stopped immediately, and started investigating. I should have known - never trust any kind of drugs! Unfortunately too many doctors do.... Just read Gillian Sanson s THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS (What Every Woman Should Know About Creating Bone Health) - 2003 Edition. You will never touch FOSAMAX, guaranteed F 57 6 days

3  Osteopenia I have experienced random spells of major dizziness and they have occurred while I have been sitting down, which I found rather strange and somewhat scary. I'm not sure if this is related to Fosamax. The longer I am on Fosamax the more I notice I am dealing with some nausea, but it isn't anything I can't deal with. I have also noticed that my legs and toes So far I am able to deal with the side effects I am noticing, so long as dizziness does not occur while I am driving. I don't know if I can really speak for most people taking Fosamax considering my age, I just wonder if anyone else has experienced the F 21 2 months

3  Osteoporosis Stomach pain, bloating, diarhea, heartburn. Black spots in eye. I've been taking this for 11 months and am thinking of stopping due to the side effects. It has helped my back pain, but is it worth the price of damage to the rest of my body? Not sure. F 51 11 months

1  Osteopenea Because I have a slight build, had a hysterectomy at age 39 and have recently stopped taking 1.25 mg Premarin daily for 25 years due to the HRT scare, my doctor recommended that I take Fosamax to strengthen my thinning bones. Tried it last winter and began to have stomach/ intenstinal cramping, etc. He recommended I try it again. In June, I began taking Fosamax (4 tabs once a week). Thought everything was OK, BUT did not realize that my right shoulder probs and my aching joints were a direct result of taking Fosamax. My shoulder joint escalated into an acute bursitis and now feels lock up. I feel like I'm 85 years old - it hurts to bend down, I'm stiff and sometimes can't get back up. I'm normally fit and relatively agile for my age. I was blaming my asthma medications, but after reading all these comments, I am convinced that Fosamax is not good for my body!! Will STOP today. Thank you for providing this web site. F 60 4.5 months

1  osteoporosis Terrible joint pain especially in ankles. I took fosamax for about 5 months before I figured out that it may be the cause of my joint pain. At times my joints got so bad that I couldn't walk. As soon as I stopped taking the drug, my legs started feeling better and they continue to improve. Where before I was taking pain medication multiple times per day, I now only need it occassionally and I'm hopeful that I can stop altogether sometime soon. M 48 5 months

1  osteoporosis From the very first time I took Fosomax, my sciatica and joint pain worsened to the point where I couldn't sleep since almost any position hurt and could not get into or out of chairs, cars, bed, etc without help. This was especially bad for the 2-21/2 days after taking a weekly 35 dose. When I looked at the manufacturer's info or asked my Dr., the only answer I got was that muscle pain occured in 4.1% of perople taking it. My Dr. acted as though I must be exaggerating, but it has happened every time for about a year now. I am thinking of stopping this medication, but am really afraid to after seeing both grandmothers and my mother suffer much injury and pain due to osteoporosis. I had a hysterectomy at 40 and stopped hormone therapy when most others did after the HRT scare. F 49 1 years

1  osteopenia I have hand and foot osteoarthritis. The first time taking 70mg debilitated me like an old woman - pain to walk or move for a day. Weeks following I experienced a variety of muscle pain and weakness especially wrists, forearms (pain and dropping things). After 3 months I started to have major cramping in larger muscles in my thighs. Right from the beginning I attributed these symptoms to side effects of fosamax. Final blow was unrelenting bone pain in the chest and rib area, close to site of radiation therapy 5 years ago for breast cancer. This happened the day after taking the fosamax. I quit taking the drug. I kept questioning my doctors and a physiotherapist about the pain I was experiencing. All of these professionals looked up the side effects and nowhere was this stated to be a common side effect of fosamax YET MOST PEOPLE IN THIS RATINGS SITE ARE REPORTING SIMILAR SYMPTOMS !! The drug company must be more accountable. F 58 4 months

1  osteoporosis in hip After the first once a week pill, I had severe joint pain, with muscles aches all over my body. I did not take the next pill until a month later as I had a 3 week trip to Europe planned and did not want to chance feeling terrible. I took the second pill when I got back and the side effects were immediate, although different and much worse! The first day I was extremely tired, felt like I needed to sleep all day long. Later in the day I had severe heartburn and I also noticed a pain in the roof of my mouth. The next day, the pain in the roof of my mouth was worse and I could feel something, like a lump. It is now 6 days since I took the pill and the sore is much larger and the pain is excruciating. It hurts terribly to swallow and I can't eat and can barely talk. I went to my doctor yesterday and she said it was definitely a side effect of Fosamax and to quit taking it. Duh! Then she sent me on my way for two weeks!! I'm quitting Fosamax and my doctor! Do not take this drug. Even if you do not have any noticable side effects, it is probably doing something bad to you. It is not worth it. There is probably a natural alternative that works just as well. F 51 2 days

1  bone loss Within 12 hours after taking my initial dose (70mg. 1/per week) I developed acute flu like symptoms, which included, extreme chills, all over body ache, and a temperature of 100.4, and diaherrea. On the next day the above symptoms had decreased appreciably. F 59 1 days

1  Ostioperosis Severe muscle spasms in my back, legs, feet and hips, back and hip pain severe enough to have to get muscle relaxers, and pain killer as well as take time off from work. Pain was so severe I could not sit, stand, walk or bend without extreme pain. These symptoms occured within weeks of my first time taking 70mg./wk. I previously had no joint pains or issues with muscle spasms. Suspecting it might be the Fosamax, I discontinued it's use for several month and the symptoms disappeared. Then in my yearly physical with my primary care physician, I explained why I had stopped using Fosamax, and he said he didn't think my muscle spasms and hip and joint pains were related, and encouraged me to begin taking it again. The second time I began taking the medication it only took 3 weeks for all my symptoms to return. F 50 1 years

2  osteopenia Pain in hip, knee and toes. Lower back pain extreme to the point of difficulty getting up out of a chair - walk bent over for a few strides! Difficulty getting in and out of my car. Extreme fatigue. Interrupted sleep pattern. Am taking in liquid form, once a week and have taken 3 doses. I have always been an athlete - competed in swimming in the Senior Olympics in Va. last year. Don't have the energy to train anymore. Did not realize the pain I was experiencing could be related to this drug until someone suggested I look at this website. My GYN plans to keep me on it for 2 years and rerun the bone density scan. I'm contacting her to discuss other options. F 58 3 weeks

1  osteopenia Hands, feet, skull, and eye pain, and blurring. Tendinitis in arms and legs. Opthalmogist starting monitoring for glacoma after noticing changes in eye. Podiatrist thought I should be checked for rhematoid arthritis. My fingers swelled so much, I had to have my wedding ring resized from a 5 to 6-1/2. Didn't connect all these symptons for a very long time, until my doctor (due to stopping hrt) increased the Fosamax dosage from 35 mg. to 70 mg. once a week. After about 2 months all of my symptons had intensified, and the light went on! After stopping Fosamax with my doctor's blessing all of the symptons disappeared. Last glacoma test showed a big improvement. I will never take this drug again. F 57 3 days

1  improve bone density Thought I was imaging things when I woke up at 2AM with back, chest & muscle pain - enough to want to make me cry, aspirin helped a little. Always had a little joint pain in the morning, but nothing like this. After reading previous posts, I feel this is a direct result from my first dose of FOSAMAX. Called my doctor, she said to stop taking it & scheduled an appt. F 55 1 days

1  extreme osteopenia 1 pill 70 mg 19 hours later I awoke in such severe pain. Headache, sore throat, chest, back, legs, wrists and hip pain like I never, ever had before and don't ever want again. It is now 4 days later I still have chest pain a sore throat and in the morning my wrists still hurt. I am scheduled for another dose of death Saturday, but I don't believe that life is supposed to be this way. I am 57 and if this is what the rest of my life will be like then I would rather be dead! I will take my chances with my bones the way they are. I think before prescribing this medication the doctors should try it themselves, they may not be so critical of their patients that do not want to take it anymore. F 57 1 days

1  osteopenia It started out with headaches during the first month. I also developed numbness in my fingers which later progressed to numbness in my hands by the end of the first month. The numbness was the worst in the morning after I got out of bed. By the second month my neck would hurt really bad when I woke up. During the second month the bones in my back and arms would hurt so much that I would wake up sometimes at 3:30 in the morning. By the 11th week of taking the drug my bones and muscles hurt most of the time and the fingers in my right hand were actually swollen when I would wake up.I finally asked myself what I was doing differently and after reading the pamphlet in the medication realized that my symptoms were a reaction to the fosamax. Don't take this drug! If you read the fine print you will see that the drug company doesn't have any results about the benefits beyond two years, and who knows what the long term effects are. If you do any other research you will find out that it can also damage your liver. And although it can build denser bones it doesn't do it in a way that is positive. Fosomax kills the osteoclasts (the bone absorbing cells), it doesn't inhibit the osteoclasts like estrogen. If the osteoclast cells are removed the bone gets much denser, but that doesn't mean that they are stonger. The bones are weaker because they have not been allowed to remold themselves and readjust to the constantly chaning forces that are applied to the bones. This means that actually the rick of bone fracture is increased. It is not worth it feel lousy to have a drug make so called repairs when it really isn't. Once again the drug companies are giving us something that really doesn't do what it is supposed to. And once again the doctores are prescribing drugs that they really know nothing about. I should have done my research before. Also, just becuase you have osteopenia doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you. You could have a medical history that has made your bones what they are. Did your period start late when you were a teenager? Did you have erratice periods during some period before you were 30? Did you ever have an underactive thyroid? All of these are things that could have effected the developement of your bones. Talk to your doctor before they prescribe this drug. If you get a bone scan be aware that there are two different scoring methods, a Z score and a T score. The z score is age mathched to the norm for your age, sex and size. The T-score compares your density to the average bone density of a health young adule woman. Review the scores and know what they mean. You could be at the very bottom of a score and a doctor is just prescribing the drug to be on the safe side. Wouldn't it be better to just improve your diet, add some Vitamin D and minerals and start lifiting weights 2 or 3 times a week than take a drug that may make you feel horrible and possibly harm your liver.
