FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  osteopenia None A little over two years ago, I saw my doctor because of horrible back and neck pain. An X-Ray allowed my doctor to identify an unexplained compression fracture at C6. That lead to a DEXA scan and the diagnosis of osteopenia. My doctor prescribed 35 mg of FOSAMAX once a week. I must confess that I find FOSAMAX very expensive for my budget, so I have skipped some weeks as other medications have a higher priority for me. Today I learned that a November 6, 2006 DEXA scan was normal. I'm very happy to learn this. I have had no side effects that I could idenitify or otherwise attribute to FOSAMAX. I'm very satisfied with the results I have obtained from FOSOMAX. Thanks. M 67 2 years

1  Fractured femoral head from acciden Joint pain, muscle weakness, severe headaches, sores in mouth, "popping" of joints, exhaustion, insomnia I started taking Fosomax while recovering from a fracture of the ball joint of my femur. Initially I was making excellent progress healing. Four months into the Fosomax, I developed headaches and increasing joint pain. At the end of six months, I moved like I was 90 and could barely turn over in bed. I found this site when I "Googled" Fosomax side effects and was astounded at the number of symptoms that matched mine. I did not associate Fosomax with my increasing pain; I thought the pain was from my accident even though my doctor couldn't find a cause. I have been off the medicine 3 weeks, and feel 1000% better already. I can walk without (much) pain, the sores in my mouth are almost gone, and I am sleeping. I have always been active--snowshoeing, backpacking, kayaking, skiing. For the first time since my accident, I feel that I may be able to resume activities that are important to me. Fosomax would have ended all of that. I would not recommend this poison to anyone! F 59 7 months

1  Osteoporosis Heart Palpitations, Heart Arythmia, Burning, Tingling in feet late in the day. Small dark purple patches inside corners of eyes (off and on). Ringing in ears. Stabbing needle pain through eyes. Ocular Migraines (semi circles of jagged flashing strobe light lines) which lasts 10 to 20 minutes. Numbness in fingers. Itchy arms and ankles. Neck pain. Chest and Back pain (bones). Shoulder pain. Hip and Spine pain. Jaw Pain. The only side effect I attributed to Fosamax at first were the Heart Palpitations and Arythmia. Dr didn't relate symptoms to drug. Tried nose spray. Same result. Saw Cardiologist. Took stress test. Mild heart valve leakage. Dr didn't relate to Fosamax. Saw Osteo Doctor. Was prescribed 35 mg once a week. I could only tolerate about once a month, due to heart palpitations. I stopped taking drug immediately upon learning about jaw death. I didn't attribute any of the other symptoms to this drug until I read other postings on this site. I am taking EZORB calcium and vitamin D. Some symptoms have improved in the 5 months I have been off Fosamax (purple patches on inside of eyes, burning and tingling in feet. Jaw and neck pain is worse, but as far as I know my dental health is good. I see a Dentist regularly. I'm frightened about potential long term harm. F 65 2 years

1  Osteopremia Update to original comment of 03/05/2006: When I was 48, my bone density test showed that my bone density was less than it should be. Over a six month period of taking Fosamax, I became generally exhausted, both physically and mentally, to the point of not being able to do my job well and doing nothing in my spare time. I also began having soft tissue injuries which were peculiar. These have continued. Update to original comment of 03/05/2006: I still suspect I have been permanently (or hopefully semi-permanently) altered by Fosamax. It is as though my ligaments became crystalized, without elasticitiy. And even though I feel I have sufficient muslce mass to perform a task or movement, something tears. I have way too many injuries near joints that manifest themselves as something like achilles heel, plantar fasciitis, tears near the shoulder, sternum, ribs, knees and maybe even ham strings.  1  two stress fractures before age 45. 24 hours after taking the once a week dose experienced severe flu like symptoms. It has been 14 days since my one and only dose and am still have extreme achiness throughout my body, fever, chills, headache, nausea, stomach pain and fatigue. I just want to get back to the person I was before fosamax. I would not reccommend this medicine to anyone. As a matter of fact I would strongly suggest they find other alternatives. F 45 1 days

1  Osteopenia Bone pain, neck pain, leg cramps, blurred vision, some stomach upset, ringing in ears. Reading all the posts and seeing so many of my own symptoms has convinced me that Fosamax is responsible. I have had these symptoms for years - I guess I thought I was just getting old, stressed. But something in the back of my mind thought that Fosamax could be responsible. I asked my doctor last visit if I could go off, and she said no. Does she get a payback? This is the only medication I take beside Ibuprofen. I'm going off Fosamax today. At least I will notice if I'm feeling better. I wonder how long that will take. I will walk more and watch my diet, and vitamins. Thanks to everyone for their posts. F 61 8 years

5  osteopena I have been taking Fosamax for 1 year. The 1st pill I took I had severe vertigo for about 2hrs. The 2nd pill I took I had severe stomach cramps, especially at night, after the 6th day they stopped & I have not had any stomach cramps since. occasionaly I will have heartburn. No other symptoms. I have had problems with both of my hips for years (think it's arthritis), however, have had no pain in my hips since taking Fosamax. although I have not had any major side effects, I am willing to put-up with the side effects, unless they are life threating. My sister at the age of 56, got into her bathtub one day, and her hip completely collapsed into itself. After having her hip replaced it was determined that she has severe osteoporosis. She had no idea she had osteo. She took Fosamax for a year, her hip had improved, but her spine was worse, so her doctor switched her to actinel. She has not had any side effects from either one. My mother who is 82 has bone loss and has been taking Fosamax for 2yrs. and has had no side effects. I talked to my doctor & my sister talked to her doctor about the jaw problems & they both said there was a problem there before these people started using fosamax. My doctor said there has been very few cases of the jaw problem. Much rather put up with the minor side effects than not be able to walk. F 60 1 years

5  osteopenia none that I can ascribe to Foxamax Took this for almost 5 years. My bone density stayed about the same at first, but in this last test it is now up quite a bit and in the NORMAL range - hooray - I also excercise a lot and take calcium (citrate and carbonate, plus a regulated amount of vitamin D in winter and a regulated amount of magnesium and a stool softener, no caffeine). I've worked hard at this and am very conscientious (consciencious??). My Dr. believes there is no reduction in bone breakage past the five year mark on this drug. I am going off and happy.  2  Prevention of bone loss I took Fosamax for about three years and never thought about side effects. However, I developed a cough that wouldn't go away - and then terrible acid reflux. I had to sit up in bed in order to go to sleep. After reading these comments, I now believe that the stiffness I have been experiencing in my legs, hips and feet are related to Fosamax and I have discontinued it. Just visited with my doctor and she agreed that I should stop taking it and should begin taking Vitamin D. That's what I am going to do starting tomorrow! I am hoping that I will experience the relief which a number of people on this site have experienced. F 66 3 years

1  osteoporosis/osteopenia In Mar.2004,I started fosamax. Within six months the pain in my back was severe and Mobic was started. By nine months the pain was so excrutiating that I was referred to a pain clinic where I was treated with an epederal and tramadol for between shots. Soon I was getting epiderals every four months for pain in the back along with sciatica in both hips and legs with flexeril and lortab to ease the pain inbetween shots. By Aug.2005, the epederals didn't work. My entire body was engulfed in pain and was almost impossible to get out of bed or into an SUV. Felt like my life was over. I saw this website and realized I had the same or similar symptoms as others. I quite the fosamax in Sept.2005. A week later I stopped the Mobic and today I feel back to normal. Fosamax has taken an entire year out of my life. I was practically an invalid. F 56 18 times

1  osteoperosis I have been on this drug for one year and my symptoms have gotten worse over time. Exhausted all the time, dry mouth, always thirsty, and my muscles feel like they are weak and atrophied. I wish I had never taken this drug. I used to run, lift weights and exercise all the time. Now I feel too tired and weak. F 53 1 days

2  Osteopenia Nausea, abdominal cramps, hip pain, headaches and bloating I was thinking of stopping this drug before reading the comments on this site, and having considered the comments, I now believe that I am right to do so. I have only been taking Fosamax 5mg daily for 8 days and I am feeling worse daily, especially in relation to the nausea. I was advisedby my GP to start taking this as I am steroid medication for asthma and I am small framed. A DEXA scan showed osteopenia in my hips. At first I appreciated the care that was being taken to protect my bone health, however, I am now wondering whether I should continuing taking this for several reasons apart from the side affects. I am particularly concerned about how this may affect my fertility or pregnancy, which my GP did not seem to advise me about. In fact, had I not read the instructions, I would not have realised that you need to take Fosamax first thing in the morning, as when I was told that I could take it any time of day, including at night. I am hoping to get a second opinion as to wheth F 31 8 days

1  Osteoporosis Jaw tightening and painful - hard to open and close mouth; neck muscles, lymph nodes sore, ringing in the ears Thank heavens for this website.  1  Osteopenia Everyday I constantly felt sick. Flu like symptoms. My entire body ached especially the muscles in my legs. I couldn't walk at without throbing aching and cramping. I would like to ask all of the ladies who are taking this product to stop taking it immediately, even if you do not have symptoms. I believe it is a very dangerous drug for women and should be removed from the market immediately. F 59 9 months

1  Osteoporosis I took Fosamax for 3 months. During that time I had increasing tightness in my upper back, shortness of breath and lightheadedness. At about 3 months I suddenly had upper chest and back tightness and pain along with pains in my left side, shoulder, arm and neck. I was sure I was having a heart attack and went to the emergency room. I spent a weekend in the hospital and had a catherization and found out my heart was in "very good shape". While in the hospital I missed the weekly dose of Fosamax and was feeling fine by the time I left the hospital. The next Sunday I took my regular dose and within a day the pains were starting again. I have decided I can live with weakening bones better than those pains and who knows what else it is doing. I have a friend with the jaw bone deterioration. I am still doing research and changing doctors to see what I am going to try beyond the calcium and exercise. I already tried Actonel for 3 months and could barely walk after sitting F 60 90 days

1  Compression Fracture Spine T8 After 1 weekly dose and even worse after the second one: Ache all over, feels justlike flu, can barely walk for pain in foot, terrible stiffness, creaky sounds from joints, pains in muscles, joints, bones, bad neck pain, stabbing pains in hip and other areas, creepy crawly ugly feeling, diarrhea. Pain med barely helps. All the hypothyroid and arthritic symptoms returned in spite of being on thyroid medication and having no current arthritic symptoms. Thank God for this site. I hope to avoid the disfiguring kyphosis, scoliosis, and/or spondylitis that my mom, grandma and greatgrandma have. Had spine Xrays were taken last month because I have sore feet. Xrays show a compression fracture in T8, of indeterminate age. The doc assumes it to be osteo and puts me on Fosamax. He said it is too late for me to take calcium (even though I have been taking it for many years as well as Premarin). Yet the drugstore bone test last year showed my bones to be very healthy. After the first weekly 70 mg Fosamax pill, The neck pain that I suffered 20 years ago returned from nowhere. Everything I do hurts and my fingers are all swollen. I tried to walk and can't because the pain is so severe. After the second pill, I feel even worse. Yet I'm healthy, eat very well, am active and exercise daily but can't now. As others have noted: I suddenly feel like I'm 100 years old! There is no quality of life feeling like this, so I'm quitting Fosamax. F 60 2 weeks
