FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  'possible' osteopenia I started getting bone deposits in my face within a year after starting the drug. I was assured they had nothing to do with Fosamax so I continued. I now have bone loss in my jaw as well! I am convinced the eruptions on my face are from Fosamax. I've also experienced pain in my shoulder and right arm that noone has been able to diagnose. And, I was refused dental implants because of the bone loss caused by the Fosamax. I would not recomment it to anyone as there are too many unknowns. The osteoma cutis on my face has gotten worse and there is no known way of getting rid of it. I've stopped taking the drug, but the damage has been done. I've also been hospitalized for an apparent heart attack. It was found I didn't have any heart problem, and there too no diagnosis was found. F 72 9 years

1  osteoporosis-osteopenia I've had 3 stress fractures to feet/toes and one stress fracture to right femur. I had a severe, almost spiral fracture, to left femur in 2007 I was placed on Fosomax @ 1997. I am the perfect profile for osteoporosis, small frame, family history, early menopause. I started out daily and changed to weekly dosage 2004.I've had constant aches & pains in legs,a couple of minor accidents, fell down three steps & broke ribs, three separate stress fractures on feet from a jarring step movement. Never thought much about it until 8/08 when I twisted my left leg while shopping & broke left femur in two places, requiring surgery, pins and a rod. Then in 2/08 I jarred same side foot coming off a step& developed a stress fracture that won't heal. I now have a stress fracture on the right side femur after walking on the beach and going up and down hills in Hawaii. Both femurs burned, as does the the foot, before the fractures. I forgot the Fosomax on my trip and haven't gone back on it! I never thought it was my bones, thought it was pulled muscles! None of my doctors saw any connection with Fosomax extended use. I'm waiting t F 61 11 years

1  Osteopenia I've been taking it off and on for about a year. I'd skip a week just to see if I felt better and I did. I have acid reflux, feel like my chest is on fire, and feel like I have the flu..............there must be another choice? I tried Boniva once, and that took me a month to get that out of my system. No MORE !!! I exercise all the time. I do not smoke. Drink socially, take my calcium every day and Vit. D and Magenisum. I really believe bone loss is just a part of aging. My Mother and Grandmother never took a drug for bone loss. My Mother does have osteoprosis, but was a lifetime smoker and soda drinker, never took calcium nor exercised. She's 85 and still kickin'. My Grandmother lived to be 79, never had a bone problem. F 59 11 months

1  Osteoporosis Terrible lower back pain, bloating, no energy. In other words, feeling extremely ill. I was feeling great, walking 2 miles a day, full of energy until I started taking Fosamax 3 weeks ago. Like one lady wrote here, I feel like an old woman. My lower back hurts so bad I can't stand up straight. My stomach is very bloated. I've gained several pounds without any change in diet. F 58 3 weeks

1  osteopenia Heartburn, dizziness, hot flashes, and terrible body aches and bone pain that increased with every week I took the medicine. After 18 weeks, I couldn't stand it any longer and stopped taking it. The pain has yet to go away, although it does seem to be lessening. The heartburn is gone, and the hot flashes are diminishing in intensity and frequency. What is the FDA thinking allowing people to ingest a product that was used as an industrial cleaner? It seems as though doctors don't care about the side effects - they say they can't possibly be caused by the drugs and make people feel as though they are imagining their negative reactions. When is our health care system going to really care? F 60 18 weeks

1  Osteoporosis Took 70mg dose yesterday and today had some of the worst neck, shoulder and upper back pain I've ever experienced. I also had upset stomach and tightness in chest. I emailed my MD, who said to take one more dose next week and if problems continue, stop taking it. I've used this site for other medication questions and couldn't believe how many respondents had similar pain. I'll start to look at alternatives to Bisphonates. Having stronger bones won't be of much use if I'm miserable. F 52 1 days

1  osteoporosis I was diagnosed with osteo in January 08 and started fosomax D weekly. In the last month, I have been getting extreme heart burn, bloating, and gas. I am also having joint problems, particulary in my fingers, while sleeping as well as severe lower back pain when trying to roll over at night. This morning, I could barely walk when I first got out of bed. I have gained some weight, even though I haven't changed my eating habits, and seem to always retain water and feel bloated. I have called my dr and was told to stop the med for two weeks and see what happens. However, after reading this site, I don't think I will be going back.... F 53 8 months

1  osteoporosis 4 days after my first pill, I started feeling flushed, maybe a fever? Then my face started getting blotchy and swelling. My throat started swelling and the roof of my mouth felt odd. Absolutely no other change in my diet or products used other than fosamax. Called the Dr. told to come in, told to STOP taking it, I too, am one of the RARE people with this side effect. This side effect IS listed, but the other sound so bad, I didn't really notice this, but it is a REAL concern. This happened 4 days after taking so would be easy to blame on something else. I am still swollen 48 hours later. This drug is scary! F 53 4 days

1  osteopenia Severe bloating of stomach, gas, constant constipation, stomach pains, diarrhea, weight gain, aching bones..knees hurt constantly, legs are stiff, when walking feel like a zombie or a woman of 100 years old, headache, both feet are always sore..burning. Neck aches, hands and fingers stiff. Tired all the time, no energy at all. Taking for almost 1 yr. Had stress fracture in 2nd metatarsal, had bone density test, which was low. Went to my GYNE this past week and complained about the weight gain (20lbs),stiffness of my joints, constipation and diarrhea. He dismissed my complaints, except for the stomach and said I could but you on Evista. I 'Googled" Evista and read all the horrible side effects. Googled Fosamax and found this site. God, what an eye opener..to learn that Merck is being sued for millions because of the effects of this drug. It's UNBELIEVABLE.Feel like a old woman, can hardly get out of bed d taking those first few steps, I can hardly walk..walk stiff legged. Bottoms of feet burn, constantly hurt and sore. My stomach is so bloated, I look like I'm 6 months pregnant, had to buy bigger pants to fit. When I kneel down, can hardly get up, my knees hurt so bad. My teeth and gums do hurt, but thankfully nothing is seriously wrong with them (at least so far). This website is terrific..I didn't refill F 56 10 months

1  My mom's taking it. My mom's taken Fosamx since 1995. She also has RA. About a year ago she fainted, broke her shoulder and was diagnosed with A-fib. She has always complained about her heart feeling funny. Her age is 79. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a week ago. All the choices were trotted out for me to pick from. I'm glad I found this website. My Dexa scores seem weird to me. Hip is normal, spine is low except for bottom section which is a -3.1 and that makes my total score a -2.5. I'm trying natural ways right now since I never took calcium before (upset my stomach) F 56

2  osteoporosis After taking Fosamax for almost 3 years I began experiencing horrendous neck and arm pain. I couldn't raise my arms to put a blouse on or put them behind my back and forget about turning over in bed once I did find a somewhat comfortable position. I'm so glad that I am not the only person suffering these side effects. I called my Gyn this morning, as my Primary care Dr. wanted me to go to an Orthopedic Dr. My Gyn told me to stop the Fosamax for 3 months and just continue with 1000 IU of Vitamin D, Calcium and to make sure I do some form of strength weights. She said that if that helped then maybe I would try Evista. No way, I read those side effects and those are worse than the Fosamax. F 55 3 years

1  prevent osteoporosis None. After reading this site, I didn't have prescription filled and informed doctor on next visit that I had no intention of taking such a drug. Doctor said that side effects were magnified by trial lawyers and that a minimal number of patients experienced side effects. I told Dr. that I was a trial lawyer before retiring and that drug company manufacturing Fosamax did not set aside a Fosamax legal reserve fund for no reason at all. It is a drug with problems and Drs. should at least provide reasonable pros and cons to patients. F 69 0 days

1  Osteopenia I have constant burning in my feet and I feel like I walk on rocks. General soreness of the muscles and joints. I went to my Chiropractor and she found crystals in my feet. She did a couple detox treatments on me and I do feel better. The burning is definately improved. F 79 30 days

1  osteopenia Excruciating headaches, shoulder and neck pain, leg cramps Shortly after starting Fosomax I began having shoulder and neck pain. Following that, I began getting excruciating migraines and was prescribed Tylenol#3 and Valium which didn't help the pain at all. I had had bad migraines until menopause but not one matched any of these. The migraines happened twice a week, usually on the same day, and always at the same time (8:30 pm) and landed me in the emergency room on two occasions. I discontinued taking Fosamax over a week ago but have had a continuous low grade headache ever since that only very high doses of ibuprofen relieves. Oddly, neither my own physician or the ER physicians made any connection between my headaches and the drug. F 55 3 months

1  osteoporosis within an hour of taking my first weekly dose, I experienced severe abdominal pain, heartburn, & bloating. I'd been warned that this might occur, so I girded my loins (well, took a Pepcid) & hoped for the best. By that evening, I'd developed what felt like the flu: aching all over, feeling feverish. My heart was racing, & I felt general anxiety; couldn't sleep at all. By morning, I was exhausted, my vision was cockeyed, & my joints were so painful & stiff that I nearly toppled as I got out of bed. By that afternoon, the "flu" had mutated into instant pseudo-rheumatoid arthritis. I am in my late 50s, very active, & accustomed to working through the usual aches & pains of middle age. This is different. As others here have said, I feel 100 years old. My osteoporosis is severe enough to concern me greatly, but becoming non-ambulatory & paranoid is scarcely an improvement.
