FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis I was taking the weekly pill (70 mg) for about 8 months with no serious side effects except for some muscle pain in the first couple of months. In the 8th month I started to experience hip joint pain in my left hip. Some days were worse than others. A couple of weeks later I started to get pain in my right hip and was having difficulty walking. A month or so later I needed a cane to walk. I started to get joint pain in my shoulders and knees as well. It progressed to point where I was in constant pain and could barely walk with a cane. I told my doctor about the pain since it first started, but he didn't want to believe it was caused by fosamax. Eventually I convinced him that I should stop taking the pill for a month or so just to see. The joint pain didn't stop right away. After 1 month I was 75% better, still having frequent, but not constant pain. Now after 2 months off the pill I'm about 95% better. Now I need a different cure for my osteoporosis. F 23 10 months

3  SEVERE OSTEOPOROSIS MY LEGS SEEMS TO BE MORE STIFF AFTER TAKING FOSAMAX I HAD EXCELLENT BONES BEFORE MY HYSTERECTOMY/CASTRATION. ANYONE WHO GETS A HYSTERECTOMY/CASTRATION WILL DEFINITELY HAVE TO TAKE SOMETHING FOR THEIR BONES. SORRY, BUT THAT IS THE WAY IT IS. NO DOCTOR WILL TELL YOU THIS ABOUT THIS TERRIBLE SURGERY. SO WE ARE STUCK WITH FOSAMAX OR SOMETHING LIKE IT. F 62 1 years

2  Osteopenia Aches in legs in early morning hours that wake me up and I have to take something for the pain. Elbow pain all day. I have to wear a brace when carrying things. Unexplained rash, like hives on neck and around eyes. Eyes would water very thick, salty tears that would make the rash worse. I asked the doctor if these symtoms could be due to Fosamax and she told me no. I am supposed to take my weekly dose tomorrow, but I don't think I will after visiting this site and seeing that so many other people are experienceing the same symptoms. F 51 8 days

1  osteoporosis Bloody noses, sinus problems, shoting eye pain, severe blood shot eyes, numbness in my toes, calf pain, lip and eye twitching, neck pain, muscle pain. I also take a blood thinner along with FOSAMAX; I have spent many night in the Emergency room trying to stop the hour long nose bleeds, nobody ER docs, my general physician have been able to tell me why I am getting them, I believe it is the FOSAMAX, because they started several weeks after I stared taking it. I also believe that the other health problems that I have been experiencing is due to this drug. I will no longer be taking FOSAMAX. Thank you all for your ratings and your reasons and the side effects that you have reported, I thought I was going crazy. F 68 5 months

1  Osteopenia After about 6 months I experienced gradually worse joint pain that changed me from healthy and athletic to almost crippled. I can barely walk up a stairs one stair at a time and leaning on the railing. Pain and weakness in my knees and hips, both sides is the main problem. My bone density has increased, but who would want to live this way? I've gone from hiking and biking to practically needing a wheelchair. I've had to move because I couldn't do the stairs to my second floor apartment. I went off it after about a year and I'm desperately hoping my joint function will return. It hasn't improved yet after 1 month off the drug. M 50 1 years

2  osteopenia Intolerable leg pain, weakness. I used to hike long distances regularly, and after taking the drug walking one block was painful. There was severe pain when starting to move legs, such as when getting up from bed or a chair. My legs would just stop working when doing physical activity. There was no paralysis, but they were tired, painful, and weak. I stopped taking the drug six weeks ago. I'm still experiencing the weakness and pain. What can I do to recover from the side effects? While I was on the drug I had a positive test for muscle degeneration. After stopping, the test was OK. The symptoms were so severe I was tested for Multiple Sclerosis and spinal stenosis. If anyone has figured out how to recover from the pain, email me at: b o b @ l e n s j o y . c o m (remove the spaces when typing my address.) M 67 3 years

1  osteopenea low DEXA score Extreme joint/muscle pain increased over past 3 years. Violent leg/foot cramps. Neck, lower back, hip mobility rapidly became more impaired. Knees/hands stiff and sore with swelling. Difficulty walking after 20 minutes of sitting. Knees 'crack'. Extreme fatigue & loss of sleep from fighting the pain. Thought I had arthritis but now wonder. Exercise daily to increase mobility and alleviate pain and stiffness and walk at least 3 times/week which helps temporarily but is becoming uncomfortable. I have trouble sleeping, waking in pain & so stiff I can barely get out of bed. Vision seems to blur. I have no other ailments & have always been very healthy. I am of slight built and Nordic heritage. Total hysterectomy at 45, took Premarin 8 yrs 'til mother had estrogen-receptive breast cancer. I stopped taking it. Doc put me on Evista-after 1 month of severe hot flashes, stopped taking it. Prefer to be drug-free, including ibuprofin (I now take round the clock just to keep moving) Chiropractor can't help anymore and can't believe the amount of pain I'm in. I went online to see if I could find out why I felt so much pain and ironically as I was drinking my glass of water after taking my LAST Fosamax I ran across this website. I was looking for contra-indications of the only drug I am taking. First I found the jaw bone issue and looked further. I thought the esophagus issue was the only major side effect. I was shocked but also heartened to finally find some possible answer to why I feel this way. I will stop the drug to see if I feel better over time. Tell your friends on Fosamax to find a safer way to deal with bone loss through vitamin/mineral therapy. Prescription drugs are for people who are sick, not to make you sick! F 57 3 years

3  diagnosed with severe osteoporosis I have been taking fosomax 70 mg. for the last four years when I was diagnosed with severe osteosporosis at the age of 46. Severe wrist pain where I could not lift or open anything. Extreme pain in bottom of feet upon getting up in the a.m.. Pain and swelling in fingers(knuckles) where I have had to have rings resized? Muscle soreness. I did not relate aches and pains to fosamax until I read this site. Although I no longer have the wrist pain and the foot pain, now I wonder if it is the fosamax?! The sore fingers and resizing of rings I attributed to getting arthritis from working in the garden? I had just heard about the "jaw death" in the last year which has me concerned. Since I have periodontal disease already, I have been concerned about the long term effects. I will be seeing my physician next month and will be asking for a dexascan and discussing discontinuing this drug. F 51 4 years

2  Osteoporosis I have been taking fosamax for about 1 year, after a bone density scan revealed osteoporosis in the back, with no apparent side effects. However, about 2 months ago I noticed that the bottom of my right foot was tender. I also noticed that when I would bend down or squat (to play with my grandchildren) the area behind my knees was tender and would hurt terribly (especially the right knee) when I would stand up again. Then about 2 weeks ago (after always being active and healthy), I suddenly woke up one morning in pain and could not even walk on my right leg. It is terribly stiff, tender, and the pain and soreness seem to surround the knee area, and extend out to my leg and thigh. My sciatic nerve is also throbbing. I have noticed my back, shoulders and neck are starting to feel stiff and tender also. I thought at first maybe I was developing arthritis, though no typical arthritis medicines (aspirin, ibuprofen, even celebrex) seemed to make a difference. And exercising made it worse, not better. Then I thought it might be tendonitis. However, that didn't make sense either, as I had done nothing out of the ordinary with my leg. I suddenly wondered if it could be side effects from Fosamax (even though I have been on it for almost a year.) After looking at the warnings on the pamphlet enclosed with the drug, and researching on the internet (and finding this website, in particular), I am convinced that is the problem. I am going to stop taking it immediately, and hope to find relief soon. Now, however, I am wondering what to do as an alternative? I don't want to be a hunched over crippled old lady---but I don't want to be in pain either. F 56 1 years

1  osteoporosis severe shin pains, jaw pain, eye tremors, upper leg pain, arms shoulders and wrists pain, burning surge pain and deep bone pain (like broken bone, stomache discomfort, indigestion, cramps) prior to taking Fosamax I walked 4 miles per day and was an avid hill walker. Since taking fosamax over the last 2.5 years I can hardly walk. I'm like a 90 year old with pains and aches everywhere. I have had every test from MRIs to lumbar punctures to blood tests and a nerve biopsy and spent 11 weeks in hospital in total over this period. I recently was advised by my specialist to go off Fosamax. I hope over the coming weeks things improve. F 54 30 months

1  Osteopenia About three months ago, it was as if someone filled a bucket with illogical symptoms and dumped them on me all at once--all those mentioned on this site. I started going to doctors to see what had caused it, but since none of the symptoms are visible, I could tell that several of the doctors thought I was a hypochoncriac. The ENT did a CAT scan of my sinus and said he saw nothing to cause flu-like symptoms; the orthopedic surgeon's Xray showed no reason for joint pain, the eye doctor saw nothing amiss, etc. Two doctors had prescribed Fosamax and neither had warned me about side effects, plus--I feel so stupid now--I hadn't thought to research it on my own. Then I found this site and blessed the people who started it and the patients who have shared their experiences. The past year I had two hip replacements, so I had assumed that the thigh and calf pain was associated with surgery. Then when I read these comments, I realized I'd been experiencing side effects of Fosamax for sever Wonderful news! Yesterday I turned my head both left and right without pain, climbed two flights of stairs without calf pain, and--best of all--this morning I tasted my coffee!! I won't take Fosamax or Evista again and will take my chances with bone loss. F 72 5 years

3  osteoporosis and osteopenia Tired. Weakness in muscles of hands, fingers and arms. I had and have extreme hip pain, but I had that before I began Fosamax, I also had and have sore fingers and hands and knee pain. I am experiencing weakness in my arms, hands and fingers. Which may be from the medication. The pain I had prior to taking any meds. I had a hysterectomy at 35 and have been on HRT since. I am 57 and recently diagnosed with disease. F 57 74 days

1  Bone density scan I am a 49 y.o. athletic male who had been biking regularly until a bone density scan suggested I should take fosamax. Bad hip and knee pain started after a year on Fosamax. I can barely walk up stairs and have had to give up biking. I've stopped taking Fosamax and hope my mobility will return. M 49 1.5 years

1  early osteoporosis Wicked headaches. Indigestion and heartburn, which weren't too bad in the beginning, but increased over time. Bone pain, mainly hips and back. I was fairly energetic before, but felt old and tired within a month of starting fosamax. I stopped taking it. Bone pain went away, and the headaches stopped. BUT the digestive issues persisted. There was no evidence that it substantially improved my bones -- F 56 5 months

1  severe osteoporosis I experienced a violent coughing attack due to the acid reflux from the 1st and only dose. This resulted in a bilateral subderal hematoma requiring emergincy surgery to drain blood and fluid from around my brain. I was in the hospital for over a month, to control the swelling. The prolonged swelling of my brain was due to the severity of the hematoma. This may not happen to many people and there may be those that didn't live to tell what happened. I almost died. I feel if it happened to me it could happen to others. This was in July 2005 and I am still suffering from the affects. I do not understand why a medication so dangerous is still on the market.  1  Osteoporosis Update... It's been 4 months now. I stopped taking Fosamax after only taking 3 pills. The pain in my shoulder was almost unbearable. That was back in Jan. 06.... As of June 06... I'm almost myself again. I still feel it some days, but it's almost normal again. I still have sore hips and back.... but, I'm 50 years old. I can look back and see my mom. She had many of the same aches... She NEVER took Fosamax... Yes, OTC drugs for pain, but that was all. She worked hard and stayed active. She's 84 now. She is in a nursing home.. but it wasn't Fosamax that put her there. Right now I feel better than I have in a long time. Not just body, but mind too. You need to take charge of yourself. NO one knows our bodies like we do. I work hard. I get out in the yard daily. I pull, push, walk, dig and enjoy my yard. What better workout? This site is wonderful. We need each other. I am feeling BETTER without this drug. I hope you will too!! F 50 3 weeks
