FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia My left knee started hurting, could not bend it. The muscles felt like they were ripping apart and the bones hurt too. One morning my right knee was just as bad. I could hardly walk. My doctor took me off Fosomax immediately. Now I am on an anti-inflamatory drug and darviset for the pain. My hope is that the damage is not permanet. My sister experienced the same thing only with her hands. Do not take this drug. It does more harm than good. F 53 7 weeks

1  Osteopenia Muscle aches, dental problems, back pain, tingling in feet and toes, fatigue and more fatigue. Depression worsening. My tests have been normal.....no one believes me. I'm getting very depressed and Isolated. I have been an extremely healthy and STRONG woman. Now I question my ability to take care of the simple tasks of daily living. Also worried that I may be permanently disabled. If anyone knows where I can go for some advice it could be a life saver. F 68 4 days

1  bone thinning I took this medicine for 3 yrs, these were my side effects, bottom of my feet hurt, ankles, hips, mussels, hair loss, restless legs, a hard time walking getting up from a chair, getting out of the car and going up the stairs was hard. I'm concerned about how long these side effects last and how long this drug (poison) stays in your system? I make myself do the things I used to do without effort. I still have a lot of the side effects, the bottoms of my feet are better. F 56 3 days

1  Osteoporosis I took Fosamax Plus D (70mg/2800IU) once weekly for 5 weeks. Severe pain in my up right jaw between mouth and ear happened in my two week of taking the pills. I also experienced significant muscle pain behind my right ear. I didn’t associate my pains with the Fosamax at the beginning. Then I noticed that they have cycle. I took the medicine on Sunday. The pains came on Monday and mostly subsided on Friday, and then came back on Monday after taking another pill. I am stopping this medicine now. This is the first week I feel pain free after more than three weeks of suffering! F 54 5 weeks

1  Ostopenia Been taking once a week for 1 1/2 years with no problems. A couple months ago started having pain in hands and feet. This has spread rapidly to all joints, muscles, everything. Low energy and cannot walk or do other exercise now. Went to Dr. thinking it must be cancer or arthritis or something drastic. First thing she said was stop taking the Fosamax. All blood tests came back showing nothing to even follow up on. I feel like crap, seriously! Skipped my weekly dose today and glad I found this website. All symptoms reported by others are exactly what I feel. Hope this will get out of my system at some point soon so I can get my life back! F 54 1.5 years

1  Osteoporosis I have small pieces of bone working out of the upper gum. I am able to dislodge the pieces, but within 24-48 hours, another piece is working its way out. I have worn dentures for over 42 years. I don't know if this is caused by Fosamax. Has anyone else had this problem and if so, please email me. F 70

Have had heart episodes, spent time in the ER, heart is healthy. unexplained problem. Bloated, weight gain, you name it and I have it. My doctor has taken me off Fosamax because too many side effects. I did not know there were side effects, I was scared to go off.  1  low bone density Initial severe joint pain and swelling; numbness and tingling bilaterally in hands and feet. Numbness and tingling have mostly subsided, but three months after stopping the drug, I have continued bilateral swelling in my feet and hands and sore muscles and knees bilaterally. I have also developed exposed bone in my lower right jaw. I can't believe how dehabilitating this drug has been. I was in great shape before taking it and now feel like a very old woman. My swollen hands are painful to use and my body aches most of the time. I know that the half life of Fosamax is ten years and wonder just how long it will take before I see any real improvement in my condition. F 65 5 times

1  osteoporosis Stomach pain, heartburn, joint pain, bone pain (my collarbone ached!!). Wrists and thumbs so sore I could hardly open jars, and had a hard time lifting 5-lb weights for my weight-bearing exercise (never had a problem before the Fosamax). Doctor has now prescribed Actonel, but it sounds just as bad. I would love to hear more from the person who is trying the natural approach... strontium, magnesium, etc. I switched to niacin for cholesterol management after I had side effects with 2 different statins, and I would prefer to do the same with the osteoporosis. If you read this, please email me! F 60 6 weeks

1  osteopenia I took Fosamax 70ml once weekly for 5 weeks. I deveoped pain in hips, legs, & feet that gradually got worse. Then I noticed severe swelling in my feet, ankles, & legs along with unexplained weigh gain. I stopped taking Fosamax 3+ weeks ago. GYN wanted to switch me to Boniva or Actonel which I refused after reading comments made here. Some of my pain has subsided but I continue to have severe edema. Interesting Fosamax is made by same company as Vioxx. Seven years ago I took Vioxx for neck & shoulder pain for about 6 weeks. Vioxx also caused severe edema along with elevated cholesterol and decrease in thyroid hormones. F 55 5 weeks

1  osteopenia Transient severe pains in both hips, mostly iliac crest, & upper femurs. Generalized malaise & fatigue. I took Boniva 4x's(=s 4 months). It has been 2 months since my last dose & I still feel lousy. I am an otherwise healthy & active person, who skis & plays racquetball & tennis. I wish I had never listened to my Md. These drugs are a con game being played on menopausal women by the greedy pharamaceutical industry and they should be recalled. I am happy to have my experience validated by others, but I am sorry we have all been guinea pigs for this drug. F 55 4 months

1  Osteoporosis Severe pain in body cavity, acid reflux, stabbing feeling between lungs when movement of arms or legs; weakness overall; after taking only one pill. Needless to day I have not taken another one nor do I intend to take it or anyother of this type. I advised my doctor and the hospital doctors that the only different thing in my life was taking Fosamax. To that they said it couldn't possibly be the Fosamax after only one dose. Spent an entire day in ER with all tests; ekg; ultrasound; cat scan, blood work; x-rays and the like. $8,000 later, the outcome was "source of pain unknown". The only thing that I had changed was taking Fosamax on Sunday. Pain started Monday. F 69 1 days

1  osteopaenia Abdo cramps, diarrhoea, flu like symptoms, lethargy, hangover feeling, dizziness, headache. All my symptoms occurred exactly 24 hours after taking the dose of Fosamax.Have taken only three doses and experienced all or most of these symptoms each time. Will not take any more and am now extremely concerned as have been prescribed Boniva and read the horrific reports about that drug. Think I will resort to just taking Calcichew with Vit D and doing plenty of weight bearing exercise. F 49 3 weeks

1  osteoporosis Severe flu like symptoms! This happened in my third week of taking the pill. The first two weeks went very well. Extreme dizziness and headache with the third week dose. It took 24 hours to run through my system. I had a similar reaction (not near as bad) with Actonel. My gyn will NEVER convince me to take another brand!!!! F 63 14 days
