FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  OSTEOPOROSIS seemed not to get bett After reading Fosamax made bones more brittle, I quit taking. Not sure the other pain I was having when taking it was related, but some of my hip, knee and shoulder pain has lessened. I am still taking the low dose diuretic prescribed to go with Fosamax and think I should probably stop it. F 75 3 months

1  osteoporosis I was taking fosamax however I started to get pain in my hips my legs by body ached all over , I felt very tired and nausea. I decided to stop the drug and my doctor told me to try using a weight vest instead of the drug he suggested the vest made by NYKNYC which is made for women with osteoporosis so I am now doing the weight bearing exercise and no more fosamax . Since I stopped the fosamax I am feeling better and since I have started with my nyknyc vest I feel so strong and I feel like my bones are getting better! Try the nyk vest instead of this drug fosamax. The vest is cute and it works! I stopped taking the fosamax and instead I got a weight vest for osteoporosis which i wear each day when walking and my doctor said the bones are getting stronger since I started the weight walking with my vest which is made by nyk for women with osteoporosis F 63 6 months

3  Osteopenia Left hip pain, left shoulder pain, shooting jaw pain, popping joints I am posting this note because I have had some success remedying the long term joint pain problems many of you discussed. After taking Fosamax for 7 years with no problems, I took a single generic pill in October, 2011. In a few hours I had nearly all the side effects listed in the other postings, hip pain, shoulder pain, jaw pain, popping joints, soreness on balls of feet. I had been completely pain free before this. I stopped the Fosamax immediately and most of the symptoms subsided over a couple of months. However, the posterior hip continued to hurt with every step, and the shoulder pain continued. For ten months there was no improvement. Besides Fosamax, I had also been taking Lipitor for five years. Since Lipitor is known to cause muscle/joint pain, and since Lipitor affects the same cellular metabolic mevalonate pathway as does Fosamax, I thought I would try discontinuing Lipitor for a while. While not completely gone, the hip and the shoulder improved significantly within weeks. Do approach this cautiously, since you must be on Lipitor for some cardiovascular reason, and your cardiovascular benefits of Lipitor must be weighed in. F 65 7 years

1  osteoporosis dry mouth and sore stomachs headaches joint pain especially in back and right hip. 2 years after taking Fosomax I still have the aches plus some. I was on it for 18 months before my Dr wrote to me and advised me to stop taking Calcium. I queried it but apparently was because of possible stroke. 3 weeks later I developed jaw ache and found it tiresome eating so in Nov 2010 my wife searched for side effects and found out not only can you get Osteonecrosis (Jaw Death) that Dentists in USA refused to treat patients on Fosomax but also a woman had cracked her femur. It was another month before I plucked up the courage to stop taking this drug. Hope is everything with this disease but to have that shattered? Only to find out that my Hiatus Hernia diagnosed after heavy boating and aching of stomach thru a top and tail and never put two and two together. So many others are saying the same thing but to do more research into this terrible drug gets even more scarier. A few months ago I once again developed jaw ache after stopping Phyto Estrogens to stave off Osteo; and realised that ww are dealing with the worst drug ever designed by man bar Cigarettes. It has not left my system!!! And reading about Oestroclasts being destryed too????!!!! I am in big trouble. If I could just get a decent sleep from aching back and hip and stomach ache I might feel atleast a little better. Is there an Antidope for Fosomax? The better be working on it!!! M 56 2 years

1  osteopenia Jaw pain, dry mouth, hip and knee pain I started this in November 2011 and took my last pill on July 13,2012. After 7 months I began getting pain in my right jaw, then both sides of jaw. I stopped medicine after a few more weeks and within a week I began having a dry mouth. I have never had this and it is very distressing as I have to keep sipping water to chew my food. The jaw pain is 95% gone now and the mouth is slightly improved after a month off the pills. I now wonder if my recent right hip pain is from this medicine too. I hope so and that it will fade. I know the knees will continue to hurt but maybe that will lessen. F 62 8 months

1  osteoporosis metallic taste in mouth, painful teeth, headache, diarrhea, pain in chest, asthma-like breathing, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, panic attacks, twitching muscles, low electrolytes (blood calcium) I had stopped taking this, but my insurance (BC/BS) sent a letter that I HAD to continue or see doctor. I couldn't get off work, so went back on meds. Symptoms only got worse. EXTREME FLU symptoms after first week. I had to have an (unrelated) colonoscopy at the end of the week. Combination of this and Osmoprep put me in the hospital for 2 days with low electrolytes and heart problems. (This is hind-sight. I didn't know they could cause this prob at the time.) I am a soccer referee who can hardly walk down the block now without getting winded and the pain in my teeth/taste are unbearable. Had x-rays done for possible pneumonia/pleurisy. I've been off for a week and symptoms persist! F 48 3 months

2   In researching my symptoms on the Internet, now I am realizing that Fosamax and Allendronate are probably the cause of my problems. I have been having pain in my upper left leg and am waiting to hear about my dexa-scan results. In addition, 2 years ago I was immediately taken off the Allendronate when I had chest pains. It was not cardiovascular but rather I found I had Barrett's disease (pre-cancerous condition of the esophagus). I attribute this to the caustic nature of both Fosamax and Allendronate. I never did get any indication that the drugs improved my osteopenia.! F 67 8 years

3  Osteoporosis I was taking Actonel for 4 years, then switched to Alendronate for 4 years. I experienced no side effects while taking either of these medications. In fact, it brought my numbers up to where my doctor told me I could stop the medication. However, I've been experiencing horrible muscle/joint/bone practically from head to toe pain since stopping and I'm convinced it is from the Alendronate (Foxamax). I went from a very active, 57 year old to feeling like I had been run over by a truck after stopping the Alendronate. It didn't happen right away - it took weeks before I started experiencing this horrific pain. I did call my doctor to see if this could possibly be side effects from stopping the medication, but he said he'd only heard of people having these symptoms while on the medication. I've started researching this on the Internet and have found a few people that are experiencing what I have after stopping Alendronate. This has been going on for over a month now and I'm wondering how much longer I will be in this kind of pain. I have found a little relief in taking Ibuprofen - 800 mg. 2x/day, but am not happy about having to take medication to "fix" the pain from having taken Alendronate. I've been off the Alendronate since April 10, 2012 and it is June 10, 2012. The pain started approx. 1 month after discontinuing use of the Alendronate and has now continued for the past 2 months straight. I'm wondering if anyone has been on this medication and stopped, then began to have symptoms like I have and, if so, how long before the pain subsided (if at all)? I am absolutely miserable with this pain and am hoping it goes away soon. I feel like I went from a pain free person to an invalid in such a short period of time. F 57 4 years

1  Osteoporosis I can't remember the daily dosage. Just to report that I sustained a stress fracture in my left femur and my orthopedic dr. said it probably was due to taking Fosamax for two years. Please beware of the risks. When they say a side effect can be fractures, they are not kidding. My RA dr. switched me to another drug (Forteo) for two years, which seemed to help heal the femur fracture. Haven't had fractures since getting off Fosamax. F 62 2 years

1  Osteopenia Did not notice any effects the first week but after taking the third pill I was beginning to put two and two together and I attribute my rapid onset of moderate to severe muscle and skeletal pain to Fosamax as I did NOT have these symptoms before. I also have pain in my feet. Before taking Fosamax I could go to the gym but now I have trouble standing and doing tasks around the house for any length of time. I too feel suddenly old...I only hope that I stopped taing it in time for it all to just go away...I am going to try natural methods after this experience. F 53 21 days

1  Osteopenia SEVERE pain in right hip that radiates to thigh, calf, under the knee, and buttock. Can no longer shop more than about 10 minutes and then can barely get into car because of the pain in the hip. I took Fosamax for three years (as prescribed by my gynocologist) & never associated the pain with the med. As I look back, the hip & associated pain gradually increased over time. My bone density tests were not showing improvement--actually getting worse (& I have done weight-bearing exercise 5 days/wk for 8 yrs & take calcium and Vitamin D). My primary care dr told me last yr to get off the medicine because it's bad for you so I did in May 2011. My hip still was extremely painful. I went to an orthopedic dr who said I had bursitis & sent me to physical therapy. It got worse. I had two cortisone shots in my hip--no relief. I went to Mayo Clinic to have it diagnosed. The dr there said I had no signs of arthritis & he wished he had an MRI that looked as good as mine. He could not figure out the cause of my pain and scheduled me for an injection guided by ultrasound to try to relieve the pain. Before I went in for the injection, my pain miraculously stopped (Oct, 2011). Then I went to my gynocologist for a wellness exam in Oct who said I was 0.1 away from osteoporosis & needed to get back on the medication. She prescribed a new one--Altevia. I resisted taking it until last wk (Mar, 2012) when I became worried about the risks of osteoporosis and took the first pill. That night, the hip pain was back as bad as ever & it's now a week later & the pain is getting worse. I finally have made the connection between the drug and the p F 59 5 years

1  osteoporosis excruciating heartburn, trouble swallowing, change in taste, heart palpitations, body aches, increased blood pressure. I am so done with osteoporosis meds. Even though I only took this for 4 weeks and haven't taken it for 2; I still have all of these side effects; at this point I would rather have a broken hip than deal with all this(ok not really but you know what I mean) I was previously on Boniva and had no issue with it until after I had my gall bladder out-then it caused heartburn too. I took myself off the fosamax, I'm taking a good calcium supplement, have increased my exercise. F 47 4 weeks

1  for osteosporosis I posted back on 3/2/10 with horrible side effects and severe pain in my ankles, feet knees hips, shoulder, ribs and back. I also had shortness of breathe, swelling of the ankles feet and legs along with headaches last year the pain in my shoulder was getting worse and the Dr. sent me for an MRI...my shoulder was diagnosed with a fracture. In November of 2011 I was sitting on my bed, I went to get up and my leg gave way resulting in a fractured femur bone. I was rushed to the hospital and had emergency surgery. I am now pieced together with 2 metal rods and 10 pins. It has been 4 months since my surgery and I am still immobile in a hospital bed at home because the Dr. says my bone growth is too slow. He is now getting me a machine to use which it is supposed to accelerate bone growth. I still remain with most of the pain I described. This has been like a never ending nightmare for me.  1  bone loss I took my first one yesterday. I woke up in the middle of the night and felt as if a bomb had gone off in my body. My stomach was on fire, and my legs. My head hurts to the point, I can hardly walk. My eyes hurt. My hand hurts. My groin hurts as well as my thigh. I am flushed and feel like I have the flu but no symptoms of flu or cold. Just miserable. My chest is tight as well. I woke up with sores in my mouth or developing. I couldn't work today...hope to tomorrow. I'm never taking this drug again...EVER! This drug should be pulled. I am grateful for all these honest testimonies. I am glad I only took one...hopefully I'll recover by tomorrow. F 67 1 days

1  osteopenia nausea, burning in esophagus, lightheadedness/dizziness, joint pain Symptoms worsened with time. After 6 weeks, was so dizzy, I thought it dangerous that I might fall and therefore was more of a risk factor than the osteopenia itself. Also, corresponding to when I began Fosamax, my repetitive motion stress injuries in wrists flared the worst in 20 years. Is there a correlation? Took a good 10 days for dizziness and nausea to clear my system after stoping Fosamax. My wrists began to improve signifcantly after stopping this drug. F 60 6 weeks
