FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia stiff and achey shoulder muscles and joints. Unable to move shoulder by week 7. It took me 7 weeks to put two and two together. As advised in the 10/04/07 post, let the FDA know of your adverse side effects: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/ and click on the "BEGIN" button on the right side of the screen. I actually feel lucky that the side effects appeared early on so that I could stop taking it. F 52 7 weeks

4  osteoporosis none Can't blame my occasional acid reflux on it since I had that before too. I have hypothyroid (medication for that helped contribute to the low bone density) and now am having problems with high platlet count. Was checking in here if it could be related but don't see anyone else with this problem. It does sound like the aching in my left pelvis could be a combo of fossamax & the doctor drilling there for bone marrow recently. F 46 22 months

1  osteopenia I experienced bone and muscle pain. I could hardly walk when I would get out of bed in the morning. I felt like I was 100 years old. I developed bumps in one of my hands and they are still there. My GYN put me on the Fosamax and when I told her about the side effects she said she hadn't heard of any problems. I was also on lipitor so I went to my family doctor. He took me off both drugs thinking it could be the lipitor even though I had been on it for 3 years. I waited 6 weeks and then the doctor started me back on the Fosamax and sure enough within a day the symptoms were back. I stopped it and went back on lipitor with no side effects. My husband said he heard on a medical show that Fosamax has phosphates in it, the same stuff in laundry detergent!! I have refused to take Fosamax so the doctor wanted to put me on Boniva. I have refused it and have opted for the calcium nasal spray. I am exercising, lifting light weights and walking. I only have osteopenia in my hips and Do Not take this drug! M 55 6 months

2  Osteoporosis Gastro problems. After three days I started getting a lot of gas, was burping constantly, and became constipated. By Day 5 I started to get heartburn. So I stopped. I am glad that I followed my intuition and stopped taking Fosamax. The side effects are just not worth the discomfort and possible harm. I truly felt that I would be doing harm to my body if I kept taking it. F 52 1 weeks

1  osteopenia Severe neck, shoulder, upper back pain Can anyone help me? How long will this pain go on?? Doctors don't seem to know and the Drug Company was not helpful. I was on Fosamax for 7 years and in pain for 6 months before discovering (for myself) that severe pain can be a side effect of Foxamax. The pain immediately diminished after I stopped taking the drug, but now seems to have reached a plateau and is with me always. I have been off Fosamax for 4 months. Will the pain ever go away???  1  Osteoporosis Flu-like symptoms began about 12 hours after one dose. I ached in every joint, had chills for hours, then realized I had a fever about three degrees above my normal temperature. 24 hours later, I felt better, but fear its not over after reading these comments. I am afraid to take this drug even though osteoporosis scares me. I think I will try to change my diet and take good nutritional supplements, but skip Fosamax. F 59 1 days

1  To prevent osteoporosis. Because my mother had very serious osteoporosis, Fosamax was prescribed for me as a preventative measure. Took this for about 3 months, always following the directions completely. Awakened in the middle of the night in the third month with a strange sensation in my mouth and throat and found that my throat was hemorrhaging. Huge amounts of blood were cascading from my mouth and all the way down the front of my nightgown. I immediately stopped all meds and saw my GP the next day. She referred me for a colonoscopy which revealed bleeding ulcers in my esophagus. A course of treatment with Prilosec, and stopping the Fosamax, cleared this up. This occurred in 2002, when I was 65 years old. I think this is an extremely dangerous drug. Even though I always took it exactly as directed, never lying down afterwards, I had this frightening, painful, and potentially dangerous side effect. I would never take it again. F 70 3 months

1  osteporosis misdiagnosed with celiac disease; severe sciatica, lower backpain;"scar tissue" found during colonoscopy;vaginal spasms; increased heartrate diagnosed as anxiety attacks; lingering, unexplained pain with recent root canal. Horrifying. In the same category as Vioxx and HRT tragedies the drug companies have dealt us. Would give anything to have followed my instincts not to take it for a year, 8 mos. The worst part is how little doctors know about it and thus are not relating symptoms they are seeing to this drug. It is my hope the dentists will finally come through for us, as they did with the Aides Epidemic, and raise the alarm. As of now, my dentists have been told that only one case of osteonecrosis has been reported of a patient who had not been on cancer therapy. Very, very doubtful. Tne ENT I went to to see if my jaw pain after the root canal was sinus related knew nothing about Fosamax. The last I heard, from my dentist, Fosamax stays in your system for ...........13 years.  1  Tendency for Brittle Bones Severe joint pain in hips and knees. Thighs and knees swelled more than double in size. In August 2007 I had my first bone density test and my DR said I had a "tendency for brittle bones". He put me on weekly Fosamax Plus D. I took the first pill exactly as instructed by product. Within 2 days I had severe joint pain in hips & knees. 3rd morning I woke up with my left thigh & knee doubled in size and I could barely walk on it. I figured it was either an initial reaction to the medication or arthritis flaring up. I took the 2nd pill a week after the first again as prescribed. Went to work as usual, drove out of town early that evening for a get together with family. Went to bed and when I woke up 2 1/2 hours later both of my thighs & knees had more than doubled in size. I had severe joint pain. I could not walk without a cane. By 5 that morning I needed a walker. I was on a walker for 3 days before I could walk with a cane. 5 days before walking without aids. I walk 2 miles a day and work out at a club 3 times a week. This came out of the blue. My D F 56 2 weeks

1  osteoporosis I have constant heartburn and gas. My feet are extremely painful, especially the soles of my feet, I cannot go bare feet even in the house. I have sore joints, painful knees and lower back pain and my right hip hurts so much that I have trouble sleeping. I have been on fosomax for almost 9 years and I thought my arthritis was just getting worse, the last few months have been shear hell, I just stumbled onto this site and realize that it could be the fosomax. I have been on the 70mg 1x week for about three years, prior to that it was 10 mg every day. I will stop taking the fosamax. I mentioned my symptoms to my doctor and he says it is just the osteoarthritis. If I sit for long periods of time I have trouble getting up, I have trouble getting out of the car and I have gained weight even though I have not changed my eating habits. I used to go for long walks, now I cannot walk very far. I also love gardening and cutting the lawn. This has become a real chore because of the pain. On my next visit to my doctor I will tell him about this site and that my symptoms are the same as other persons taking the drug and ask if perhaps he can prescribe something with less side effects.  1  osteoporosis poor vision in both eyes I have a rare condition called Retinal Vein Occlusion in my right eye. It's like a stroke in the eye. While I was not taking Fosamax when the occlusion occurred, some retina specialists associate Fosamax with RVO. After I stopped taking Fosamax for other reasons (the jawbone decay problem), the vision in my bad eye gradually improved over the course of a year. 20/20 being normal, my best corrected vision in the bad eye had been 20/70 on Fosamax and slowly improved to 20/40. That is a HUGE difference. My good eye also improved, so that I needed a weaker prescription for glasses. There can't be any other reason, because nothing else happened to me or was done to me. Fosamax is an evil drug. F 65 3 years

2  osteopenia jaw locks, severe shoulder pain in both shoulders I am only 39 years old and my doctor told me that I have osteopenia. Because my mother and my father had osteoporosis, she prescribed fosamax for me. I have taken this medication as directed for about 2 years. During these two years my family has joked with me about having more doctors appointments than my 94 year old grandmother. My shoulders are constantly hurting me. I have had MRIs and Physical therapy for them. One day I picked up my Fosamax from the pharmacy and read the side effects sheet that comes with it and it occurred to me that my pain started slowly 2 years ago when I began taking this medication. I have 3 young boys and I cant even throw a baseball with them. I am not sure what is going on with my jaw but it seem as if it also worsen with time. F 39 2 days

1  osteoporosis I started taking Fosamax 70 in 2004. At that time I was running 5 miles a day and was surprised that I had osteoporosis since there is none in my family. I didn't experience much pain except for heart burn all the time. In Janurary 2006 I lifted a laptop incorrectly and felt a painful twinge in my back. The pain didn't get any better and by September I had to have the assistance of a wheel chair. I went to a Neuro-surgeon and he performed a partial Disksectomy. This relieved the pain but here I am a year later with pain in my lower back, my knees, my right foot, my jaw and my eyes burn and I still have heart burn. I can hardly stand to have any thing around my waist. I'm told that this is part of recovery. I started to put 2 and 2 together and realized that every week when I took Fosamax my knees and back hurt so much that I take Tylenol like candy and set with a heating pad. I can hardly bend over and only get any comfort while sitting. I only get about 3-4 hours of sleep which isn't M 65 3 years
