FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteoporosis Problems swallowing, swelling of the esphogus, neck pain, severe bone and muscle pain, knee pain, insomnia, ear popping, fatique, lack of energy, heavy chest and back pain, breathing pain The side effects were shocking. I was and active, athletic, 53 year old woman before I figure out that fosamax was the cause of my side effects. I am now 55 and have been off it for 4 weeks. The bone and muscle ache is reduce but my other side effects are still present. I have been told that Fosamax can stay in your body for 1 year. Has anyone been on this drug as long as I have and if so did the side effects go away? Please email me if you have found anyway to restore your health. I went to my gyno(who originally prescribed the meds), a gastro, general doc, and rhuematologist who gladly took my money for many tests and procedures but never pointed out that all my symptoms were the side effects of Fosamax. What crooks! I happened upon this site when surfing the web and finally found answers to my problems. I'm hoping someone will email me to let me know what info you have discovered to help me. I'm feeling like my teeth are starting to be affected. What do I do? F 55 2.5 years

1  osteopenia, osteoporosis prevention My mother has been on Fosamax for two years. In that time she had bone pain that woke her up at night and would only go away when she walked. Heartburn, racing heart and cramps inher feet. She quit three weeks ago and all is going away. It did her no good. For the two years she took Fosamax, her T scores remained about the same. She always took Fosamax on a weekly basis, 70 mg dose. Severe pain in shoulders and lower back. Digestive problems including stomach cramps bloating and constipation. Muscle pain all over the body. very tired all the time. My mother was not aware of the side effects of Fosamax until recently. I read about the side effects in internet. She was a very healthy person, active and able to do most actitivies before she began Fosamax. She has seen more doctors now from taking Fosamax in the past year and a half and run more tests than she has ever had before even for her age. All tests come back negative, not being able to find any answers to the cause of her problems. The doctors could give no answer. Fosamax is very dangerous. It should be taken off the market.  1  My Dr. prescribed it. Ultimate extreme pain in my back including spasms, my collar bone, hips, and hands. I became weak and couldn't talk without body pain. I hesitated when my Dr. prescribed this and brought my husband in to help me ask the correct questions as I do not take any medications and was concerned that I may not know what to ask. When asked what the side effects were, we were told that I would experience acid reflux if I didn't follow the directions. I followed the directions and never had acid reflux but when the painful side effects began, I prayed to pass out because the pain was the worse I had ever experienced. When I called to let her know how I physically felt, she prescribed a muscle relaxer which I refused and never picked it up at the pharmacy. F 55 1 days

1  osteoporosis Severe acid reflux that was unaffected by Rx medication; also severe migraines starting the day I took the medication. Migraines were also unaffected by usual Rx medication. Acid reflux began immediately and even specialist didn't associate it with Fosamax. I went through test after test and in the end was diagnosed as "unknown cause". Migraines came back after a hiatus with a vengence, especially on the day I took the med. None of the usual medications relieved the pain. It wasn't until I found this site that I put the pieces together. F 60 12 months

1  Osteoporosis of femur After about 4 years of use, started having chest pains, or internal pains at about shoulder blade level, on an increasingly frequent basis. Also began having pains in knees at that time. Current symptom of right thigh pain may be related to all these years of biphosphonate use. Initially the chest-type pains were thought to be maybe heart problem, or gall bladder problem, or ulcers, etc. but no medical tests substantiated those hypotheses. When I switched from Fosamax to Actonel, the symptoms gradually disappeared. I was on Fosamax for 6 years, followed by 8 years on Actonel, and am currently on neither, for the last 2 months. For the six years I took Fosamax, my T scores for my left femur remained about the same, some years less than -2.5, some years a little better than that. I always took Fosamax on a daily basis, 5 mg dose. After learning about research studies suggesting that unusual low impact femoral fractures might be related to long-term biphosphonate use, and that some of those fractures were preceded by leg pain, I have stopped using Actonel and am hoping that I don't have a minor fall one day and find myself with a broken femur bone. I have kept good records of my 13 DEXA results over an 18 year period, and doctor's comments throughou F 66 6 years

1  osteo After taking Fosamax for approx. eight years I was prescribed Nexium and then Klacid HP7 - from that day on I have experienced daily, hoeendous pain travelling thro' every part of my body! I have been diagnosed with(since proved wrong) Rheumatoid Arthritis and Leukaemia! I've had Bone Marrow Biopsy and numerous tests - I have a phobia of needles so this has added to the horror. I want this drug taking off the market - my Dr. has finally conceded after over a year of my emphasising it was probably the original combination of drugs that triggered the above continuous pain and possibly changed my blood metabolism, & may be now slowly working it way thro' my system and perhaps healing itself - my doctor concedes at long last it MAY be - probably these drugs!!! But he said we can't prove this theory - I have news for him - it came overnight and I have and am still suffering! I think the pharaceutical company has a lot to answer for - I am worried that other people may suffer the de I have sold a beautiful Queen sized bed because at one stage I was like a stranded whale trying to get out of bed. I tore 1 1/2 tendons in my left arm trying to get out of bed! I invested in an electric bed but until I have had pain killers and a shower I cannot move my left shoulder and arm first thing in the morning. The pain and utter exhaustion I have suffered because of these drugs is inbelievable unless one has experienced it. I am going to begin more physio with a new physio- so far physio has not helped me. The Dr. gave me a cortisone injection - it lasted overnight! Until taking these drugs - I was active and a young person for my age. Now my life is changed completely. - F 74

1  osteopolitis after 2 months I had terrible muscle pain in one leg & buttock. Stopped taking it and took 5 weeks before I was myself again w/no pain. Doctors at MGH didn't believe it was the Fosomax but I know it was. Will never take it again. Take it off the market. Yes, it may help many but too many has side effects. F 68 2 months

1  osteoporosis after about 6 months I experienced increasing memory loss and I am only 51. The memory issues increased until I stopped taking fosamax and with 4 weeks my memory was clear and crisp. There are ways to get strong bones without sacrificing your brain. This side effect was one that my Mother and several other people I know have had on Fosamax. If your retired and don't work - who would tell you that your memory is bad. Also why would you assume bad memory is due to age - that is not always the case. F 51 37 months

5  bone loss None I'm very good at following the directions for Fosamax. I drink at least 2 1/2 cups of water with it and wait a good 30 minutes before doing anything or taking anything else. I am surprised though that the doctor hasn't recommended another bone density test since I started taking it to see if it is working. F 61 4 days

1  osteoporous abdominal pain/discompfort, constipation, bloating, difficulty lifting one arm due to muscle weakness, general body fatigue/weakness of a lesser degree than above, headache, upper central incisor with veneer cracking up and pieces falling out, other teeth aching mildly, one eyelid twitching, occasional vertigo. I have only had two doses of 70mg once weekly fosamax. My third dose would be due in three days, but I don't plan to take any more. Although my symptoms are mild compared to a great many of the others writing here, I have only taken two doses and was surprised to have so many odd symptoms. I am so glad that I decided to research this drug before taking anymore. I saw my dentist yesterday for the incisor that is breaking up and he said he is reluctant to treat me because of the potential for osteonecrosis of the jaw. I was shocked. I only had two doses. I decided to read the complete lengthy information sheet that came with my medicine - sounds like something I should have done first. But the print is so small that even with perfectly normal vision after cataract surgery this past summer, I still needed a magnifying glass to get thru it, with great and difficult concentration. I wonder if it is designed deliberately hoping that most of us could not possibly read it. I hope all F 65 2 weeks

1  osteopenia/vertebrae fracture I experienced multiple health issues including: undiagnosed long term toothache (elective root canal--no change) severe sudden onset TMJ, Reflux effecting my larynx (specialist said is was the worst he'd ever seen; Burning Mouth Sydrome; Heart Palpitations; high blood pressure; joint pain. Many expensive tests and doctors and dentists, not to mention the worst year of my life, with no solutions. An informed CNA suggested Fosamax could be causing my jaw problems. When I stopped Fosamax, all symptoms disappeared over a couple of months. In my opinion, Fosamax is poison. Cardiologists, dentists, internists, etc, need to know about the side effects of this dangerous drug. In retrospect, it's hard to believe not one of the many professionals I saw put the dots together. I am so grateful for the internet and the information available--it has saved my life. em, 1/1/09 F 68 10 months

1  Osteoporosis I felt like someone hit me in the back with a two by four. I have taken Fosamax for several years but in the last year I have been feeling tired all the time.I have severe pains in the back and shoulders and find it hard to turn over in bed. I have experienced heartburn and pain in my jaws. I have seen three Doctors to find out what was wrong but no one could find out what was causing the pain. The only medication I take is Fosamax, so I decided to check out the side effects on my computer. I am so glad I found this site. I have stopped taking this drug and hope that it has not done any permanent damage. My family Doctor thought I had muscle spams and told me to try a chiropractor but that was no help, My Cardiologist and also a Gastro Dr. could not find any thing wrong with me. I was happy to find that others have the same symptoms I have. F 76 4 years

1  Osteopenia and broken leg I felt like a FEEBLE 95 year old (I was 63), my balance was off, I was shaky, I developed a head tremor and generally did not feel like myself. I had a lumpiness where my sternum meets my clavicle. My doctor sent me to an endicrinologist, who did a scan of my thyroid, but it was okay. Two years later, I still have the lumpiness and the head tremor, but I don't feel 95 anymore. I stopped taking Fosamax after a few months. I became very afraid of my new symptoms. I looked online to see if anyone else felt the same way, and that's when I found this website. Today I read that taking Fosamax is possibly linked to esophageal cancer! I would never take this drug again, or anything like it, and I hope everyone will read all the warnings on this website before making up their minds to take or continue taking it. I think it is a very dangerous drug! F 65 5 months

1  Osteopenia Back and neck pain, acid reflux disease, diverticulosis, bloating, heart arythmia and many, many more. I was quite healthy before taking Fosomax. I took it in 1996 for about 6 months. Since then I have developed a ton of maladys. Too many to mention. Mostly all of my organs are affected. Liver, heart, intestines. Have chronic inflammatory disease. I suggest also that people have their ferritin levels checked. Mine shot up to 530. The norm is under 148. Please people, stop taking this poison. F 65 6 months

1  osteopenia felt like I was hit by a Mack truck! horrible rib, shoulder and back pain. Sweated all night, blurred vision, nausea, couldn't stay awake. Too many horrible symptoms to list. I have only taken this once and took me a little while to associate the symptoms back to fosamax. So glad I did a little research to find this site, now I know I'm not crazy. I was trying to work up nerve to take 2nd dose, but now I'm not so sure I will. Anybody have good alternative natural medicine? F 51 1 days

1  osteoporosis I have been on Fosamax for four years. In that time I had four compression fractures. Three of them since July of 2008. Horrible bone pain in the lower legs that woke me up at night and would only go away when I walked. I lost a lot of sleep! Heartburn, racing heart and cramps in my feet. These all went away when I quit taking Fosamax. I quit in November of 2008. Been on for four years and it did me no good!! F 73 4 years

1  Osteopenia Fatigue, burning in stomach, constipation, pain at recent fracture site (stress fracture of tibia) headache lasting 3 days. I was prescribed this medication because I suffered a stress fracture of my left tibia from jogging. Had a bone scan and was told I was "in between" having osteopenia and osteoporosis. I was given the 35 mg. dosage of the generic form of Fosamax, which I take weekly. After the first dosage, I did not notice anything other than mild constipation. After taking the second dose, my stomach started burning whenever it was empty (between meals), I started having pain at the site of my fracture (which was incurred 17 weeks ago), headache that lasted for 3 days and more severe constipation. I am an active middle aged woman who exercises every day and takes calcium, vitamins and minerals and could not figure out why I suddenly felt so ill until I researched the known side effects of this medication. After reading all of the reports here, this medication scares me and I am going to stop taking it immediately. F 58 10 days

1  osteoporosis After taking first weekly pill - lightheaded. A few days later -attack of vertigo. After taking a second pill, bouts of vertigo were almost ongoing throughout the day. Eventually went to Emergency Dept. Over the following year, the frequency of attacks lessened but only with new medication to control the attacks have I been able to have some semblance of normal life. I am still hypersensitive to temperature change and sound (making it difficult in busy or noisy environments such as shops and restaurants. This drug seems to have triggered something that has permanenly affected my life. F 65 2 weeks
