FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteopenia Extreme fatigue and constant, all-over muscle and joint pain, especially in the groin, sciatic pain and rib-pain in the middle of my back, so severe that I cannot lie down for more than a few hours at a time. Like many of you, I didn't relate, nor did my doctor, any of this to Fosamax. All I can say is thank you, thank you, to all of you who posted comments. I have been desperately ill and had begun to think that I was going to die. Day-by-day I felt myself growing weaker and weaker and the pain in my rib cage grew more intense. I just never related it to the Fosamax. I was relieved to read that many of you had experienced the same symptoms, especially the rib pain and that it ceased when you stopped the Fosamax. I immediately stopped taking it. Hallelujah! For the past two nights I have been able to sleep without rib pain; however, I am still very stiff. Like many of you, I wonder if I will ever be completely free of the effects of this horrible drug. I am working with a nutritionist and have started taking chelated magnesium with B-vitamins and detoxifying my body; it seems to be helping. I will seek a natural alternative for the Osteopenia. I welcome any of your email if you have any suggestions. F 52 1 years

3  Osteopenia Seems to have caused morning loose stools, for over a year, until I discontinued it. Problem alleviated. Started again after 3 months as a double-check - sure 'nuff, the problem recurred. Otherwise, it seems very beneficial to many people. However, several of my friends experienced gastric side effects.  1  osteoporosis From first taking fosamax I noticed a rash - very small red spots across chest area. then after 9 months my neck started to ache but the Doctor said it was not related to fosamax as it would have happened straight away. Then I developed a sore throat, pains in neck and burning sensation in bones in the neck and shoulder. It was then that I looked on the internet and saw others with the same symptoms. stopped taking fosamax 6 weeks ago symptoms subsided but still have sore throat. Seen today by e.n.t specialist who says I have reflux. I will not take fosamax again as I am sure that my problems are due to the drug. F 52 1 years

1  osteopenia Like many others, I did not attribute my aches and pains to Fosamax. I just thought it was part of getting older. I stopped taking it when I heard about the jaw problems and just decided to ask my doctor for something else when I see him next month....low and behold my aches and pains have decreased significantly. Before getting off it I had felt like I had gotten old all of a sudden! When I would get out of bed in the morning it would take a few steps to get fully upright. The bottoms of my feet had hurt for about a year. My wrists were tingly and hurt alot. I have also remember that about 6 months ago I had terrible jaw pain. I went to the dentist twice and never got any relief. He xrayed it and never found anything. He referred me to an oral surgeon but before I could go I felt something coming up through the skin. It felt like a splinter so I got some tweasers and pulled it out and it was a bony spur. The pain stopped immediately. I definitely think this was due to the F I would not recommend taking this drug. If you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed, see your doctor. F 51 2 years

1  Doctor Rx - back bone density low I have been getting progressively weaker leg muscles. Was walking with a cane after double knee replacement, but have gotten worse. Now must rely on a walker to get around. Have been tested -4 MRI's, nerve conductivity, spinal tap -all normal. If this is a result of Fosamax, I cannot believe what terrible pain and suffering I have endured as a result. I cannot get out of a chair without arms and can barely turn over in bed. I cannot get into or out of bed normally. I must use my arms to lift my legs to get in bed and the car and must use my arms to pull myself out of bed or the car. I was concerned that I had a form of spinal deterioration, but now I am not sure. I am going to discontinue fosamax immediately. I have an appointment in three weeks to see a neurologist at a major clinic. Perhaps he can shed some light on this. Meanwhile, I will stop the drug. I have been taking it for probably 4 years and have seen progressive deterioration which I presumed at first was due bad knees, then some sort of other disorder, but now I am really unsure, scared and mad all at the same time.  1  Osteopenia Extreme hip and joint pain. I have trouble standing after being seated for a short while I've had an overall weakness in my legs, arms and shoulders. My neck, knees and ankles creak like I was 100 years old. I thank God that I found this site. I've always been strong and healthy, so I thought, "what's happening to me?" My doctor kept saying, you're getting older you know.It was so depressing not being able to do the things I was used to, like kayaking, riding my bike and taking long walks. Fosamax took that all away. I hope it comes out of my system soon. DON'T TAKE THIS DRUG! F 67 18 months

3  Osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for approximately 1 1/2 years and didn't think I had any side effects because I was only looking for difficulty swallowing. I have an upset stomach daily (never had stomach problems), I have a LOT of gas, I just started getting a pain in my right hip, loose stools but the worst part was the debilitating fatigue! I have absolutely no energy except to go from the bed to the couch. Everyday chores now seem overwhelming, I seem to get anxious and depressed over minor issues. This website is like a god-send. When I contacted my doctor, she told me to stop but didn't believe my issues were from the Fosamax. I believe they are because I have never had any of these issues before taking it and the only other medication I'm on is Zestril for blood pressure which I've been on for approximately 12 years.  1  Osteoporosis of spine and hip After taking Fosamax for 6 years, I believe that it is the cause of dry eye and bone pain in my legs. I am extremely concerned about recent reports that Fosamax may cause painful decay of the jaw bone in people who take the drug and have dental surgery. I have stopped taking Fosamax. F 63 6 years

1  Osteoporosis Burning lungs (chest) and into arms when doing cardio work on stationary bicycle (no problems previous to taking Fosamax). Aching thumb joints, aching teeth. Noticed lots of hair loss when showering or brushing out tangles. I am pre-menopausal. Diagnosed two yrs. ago. These side effects came on quite suddenly after being on Fosamax for about 6 months. Interestingly, I had read a recent blurb in AARP warning about anecdotal evidence of jaw bone death in patients taking oral dosage of this drug and I (maybe not so coincidentally) forgot my weekly dosage the next morning. I waited until the next week to resume and noticed the side effects disappearing during the week I was off, started again the following Saturday and the symptoms returned. So I have taken myself off of this drug and I feel "normal" again. I'll do yoga, weight-bearing, calcium and D and let the chips fall where they may. Too scary with the news of jaw bone death.  3  osteopenia Major dizziness (vertigo) ?pain in left hip Tiredness headaches I have been taking fosamax for about six years now. Everything was fine untill the last year. I suffered a severe bout with vertigo, felt tired, fog brained, stiff at times. About 4 mo. ago I stopped taking the drug and was feeling much better. My bone scan showed a decrease in mass so I began taking it again about 3 wks ago. The dizziness has returned, along with headaches and fatigue. I consulted my Dr. about alternative meds. F 47 6 days
