FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Osteoporosis I took my first Fosamax pill Sunday morning. I had no effects until Monday morning. I had severe back pain and pain in my left rib cage. I lifted my arm and my back went into a horrendous spasm. I couldn't even get out of bed. I almost called 911. The spasms continued and I couldn't even breathe. I had to take shallow breaths. Just moving put me in a terrible back spasm that is difficult to describe. I thought I was dying. It was a pain I have never felt before. When the pain moved to my front middle chest my doctor told me to go to the emergency room. I left there with a diagnosis of "chest pain of undefined origin." They thought I had strained a muscle and put me on muscle relaxants and an anti inflamatory. My doctor ordered an ultrasound thinking it could be my gall bladder. That test came back negative. I lost three days of work but the pain subsided on the third day. F 55 1 days

1  osteopenia I didn't make the connection, but after reading these comments I think my problems are because of Fosamax. I am stiff when I get up, pain in feet, shoulders, thighs and knee joints. I actually wondered if I had a torn rotator cuff. I have been healthy and painfree all my life. I thought I just started falling apart when I turned 55 in July. I started Fosamax in August. I went to an eye specialist in Sept and she diagnosed a shrinking of the gel that covers my eyes--said it was just due to aging. Is this related to Fosamax? For the past two weeks I have been having upper digestive problems accompanied by a most unusual smell and taste. Others can't smell the odor, but I do all the time. Since taking this poison I have the worst gas imaginable! I will never take another and I hope this is all reversible. I took the once a week and followed the instructions perfectly. F 55 5 months

2  osteoporosis I'm still taking Fosamax but am considering quitting. I feel it may be linked to my throat irritation and subsequent bacterial infection of the sinuses and eyes although it has helped improve my overall bone mass. F 72 5 years

1  osteperosis I took the once weekly form of Fosamax and now feel like something is stuck in my throat. I was on Actonel-with no problems, however, osteopenia did not improve. Doctor has switched me back to Actonel. Feeling in throat is still there after 2 weeks of being off of drug. Was wondering if someone else has had this and does it go away. F 57 2 weeks

I would never take this drug again, and I am warning all my friends/relatives about my experience with this potent drug! F 61 3 weeks

1  Prevention of osteoporosis Could barely turn my head from side to side, lower back and knee pain, stiff feet I just posted here for the second time and my comments got cut off. There are too many people on here with the speedy onset of the same symptoms after taking Fosamax or a medicine like it and we need to somehow get compensated for our pain or, at the very least, get this medicine taken off the market. I see that it now has Vitamin D--oh, that should help a lot! F 61 8 months

1  thinning of bone mass pain under my ribs and right side. Couldn't sit or lay down without being in pain night and day. Changed my mattress and box spring, but no change in pain over a two year period I think it is a dangerous drug that causes many side effects F 79 2 days

2  Osteopenia Severe hip pain, gas, constipation. I never had problems with my hips, gas, or constipation before taking Fosamax. My hip pain is so severe I can't walk up/down stairs easily or sleep through the night if lying on my side. I will definitely be stopping this drug to see if the systems abate. F 53 10 months

1  Osteoporosis My wonderful wife made a decision to stop taking Fosamax seven months ago at my urging. The decision resulted from discovering this incredibly helpful website. Thank you all (and this website) for posting side effects which helped us to get to the bottom of what was causing all of her symptoms! Linda took the once a week version of Fosamax for 2 years and the daily dose for 2 years prior (approximate). It took several months for all the adverse side effects to stop. Here is how Linda described her many symptoms in a letter to her MD who was not fully aware of the risks these drugs posed to her patients: "You may recall that I have variously complained about arm and leg pain, insomnia, dizziness, and plantar faciatis. Because I didn't want to sound like a raving lunatic or a hypochondriac, I didn't tell you about everything, but you can add to the list: extreme itching, shin and thigh pain, joint pain (esp. knees and hips), stabbing eye pain and blurry vision (N.B. Please se Linda has made a remarkable recovery--four months after stopping Fosamax the side effects were mostly gone. She is almost pain free, sleeps through the night, no longer suffers from severe depression and has lost the 20 pounds she gained while taking the drug. She feels like a new woman. I am really happy that we were able to get to the bottom of the problem with the help of this website and your posts. The warning literature only hinted at the problem. It seems that the once weekly, monthly, quarterly (Boniva injection) increase the incidents and severity of side effects. It also seems clear that the longer the drug is used the higher the probability of generating various and/or more severe side effects. This is Fosamax's dirty "little" secret, which members of the bisphosphonate class of drugs all share. Based on what I have read, the risks of these drugs far outweighs the benefits. What is more alarming is that MDs seem to be unaware of the severity of the side effects F 56 4 years

2  osteopenia Sudden difficulty swallowing after 2 months taking Fosamax weekly. No other symptoms. I had constant low-grade pain in my sternum, burped a lot, some reflux, and felt like something was stuck in my throat. I tried anti-acid with no impact whatsoever. After two weeks, I suspected Fosamax and stopped. My symptoms were mostly gone two weeks later. I'll see my doctor in two months and decide if I should try again. F 58 2 months

I had broken my foot and after the cast was off for 8 weeks noticed that my toes hurst so bad I could not move them at times. Also haveing problems getting up from sitting, I need to stand still for a minute. The bottom of my feet hurt so bad I can't walk right away. Having trouble bending down, experienceing sever pain. I had none of these symptoms before taking this medicine. Called my Dr. and he said he did not believe that this was caused from the medicine.  1  arthritis thinning of the esouphegas. It was so bad that I could not swallow , even water. Have to go in to have surgery to repair. Muscle aches all over , rapid increase in overall aging, weight loss. fatigue, knee problems, stomach problems. Please Please do not take this drug. Someone needs to stop this drug from being prescribed. Most often, doctors do not beleive you when you think the side effects are from certain perscriptions. If only the doctors would try it first! If I had known all of these possible side effects, it would have saved me a year of agony. F 75 1 years

1  osteopenia After taking 70mg once a week for 4 weeks, I began experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, bad taste in my mouth, back, shoulder pain. I think I was experiencing severe reflux and probably had had it all the time. I feel it worstened over the 4 weeks. I quit taking the drug and called my doctor. He had me come in and wanted me to have a heart stress test. I have never had heart problems and told him I knew it was the Fosamax causing the smptoms. It's been three weeks since I quit taking the drug, but am still experiencing some stomach pain and a little reflux. I hope there isn't permanent damage!! F 56 4 weeks

1  BONE DENSITY TEST RESULTS Severe acid reflux conditions with esophagus damage, aching joints, lost strength in my hands, bloating in mid section, pain and swelling in gall bladder, miserable way to live. I was feeling good and experiencing good overall health when my doctor took a bone density test and put me on Fosamax. The first several months I had no apparent side effects, then little by little started having stomach and esophagus problems, other side effects as listed. I took Fosamax 6 months and have been off of it for 3 months. I have been miserable for those three months, but am slowly recovering by a very selective diet, lots of herbal tea and taking medication for acid reflux. Before taking Fosamax I had never experienced acid reflux or any significant digestive disorders. In my opinion, Fosamax is a dangerous drug and should be taken off the market. F 69 6 months

1  osteopenia SEVER back pain with spasms, thought my back was going to break Took fosamax 2 year ago the next day woke up with sever back pain with spasms. I thought was dieing. Drove myself to the doctors office (I don't know how) crying and looking like a fool, I couldn't stand up straight walking with knees bent & back is horizontal to the floor. Spasm so strong it would squeeze all my air out of my lungs and felt as if it were going to break my spine between my shoulder blades. My doctor said it was not the foxamax something else was the cause. Was on Flexeril for 2days. I decided not to take fosamax again just in case it was the cause. Well 2 years later a new Doctor new bone density test. Told me that I really needed to be on fosamax, I explained what happened and that I didn't want to risk it, he assured me it was not the fosamax, that he had never heard of that happening. I took it at 6:00 a.m. 1/31/05 at 8:00p.m. back started to hurt by 12:00 EXTREME pain and spasm. Taking 600mg of ibuprofen every 2 hours. I can't believe I did this AGA F 45 1 days

1  osteoporosis severe joint pain, including sternum, back, hips, and severe swollen knees which made it impossible to come from sit to stand without assistance I missed 4 days of work after taking one 7-day pill and was not walking steadily and safely for about two weeks. My doctor suggested I try again and take with a course of Benedril with a prednisone perscrition as a back up plan. My pharmacist told me to stop taking Fosamax. I decided that since the side effect were immediately crippling I would not resume. F 55 1 days
