FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  early osteoporosis After one dose had slight nausea. Muscle and bone pain. Felt like cracked ribs. Headache. Eye pain. Flu-like symptoms. Chills. Had trouble lying on my right side in bed. Felt like someone beat me up. Exhausted. I am not planning on taking it anymore after reading the comments of the other patients that had similar symptoms, especially about the jaw disintegration. I only took one dose. F 64 1 days

1  osteopenia I was just diagnosed with osteopenia and prescibed to take the Fosamax but after reading all the comments on this site I dont want to even start it. I have been doing weights for about 10 years at least twice a week and running or walking every day. I already have all the joint aches and had TMJ, just fractured my ankle in Dec and took forever to heal.....so it sounds like I may just make myself worse taking this!!! I think I will pass on it F 55

1  Osteoporosis I've been on and off Fosamax (and Actonel, a similar drug) a few times over a period of two years. Every time I took it I experienced severe foot cramps. Also, in addition to severe acid reflux and regurgitation, it caused me to get bleeding cracks in all of my fingers (I had to bandage all of them) which would go away whenever I stopped it. Then it began to cause me chest pains and a pounding heartbeat that also resolved when I stopped taking it. The doctor tried switching me to Actonel, a similar drug, but all the symptoms that Fosamax had caused also appeared with Actonel. F 61 2 years

1  Spinal bone deterioration I am a breast cancer patient who already struggles w/ chronic pain from the treatment required for my cancer. After 2 doses of Fosamax, my joint pain has worsened significantly, and I have swelling in my torso. I've decided to stop taking it. My pain includes pain in the wrists, knees and ankles. It has been interfering with my sleep and my mobility. I'm also experiencing discomfort in my throat at the very back of my mouth and when I lay down I experience a dry, hacking cough. These symptoms have been worse the first 2-3 days after I took the pill. My Mom has taken Fosamax for years. I'm thinking that her chronic shoulder pain might be related to this medication.  1  osteopororsis Listen to this, I didn't take fosamax because of this site! Thank you all for the warning! So I went to a GNC and thought I found a great natural alternative called Ipriflavone (Ostivone) I took one and woke up at 5am with horrible hip and stomach pain! Sound familar? It's been 11 days and feel only slightly better in the AM for about 20-30 min. After 20-30 min pain again! I sure hope this dosn't last long, has anyone else have experience with this Ipriflavone? Isn't cyanide (spelling ?) natural too? F 77 0 days

2  Osteoprosis I am 56 and have taken Fosamax for about 6 years. I have recently felt that I have an 80 year old's health, rather than my own age. I have noticed in the last year that I have had increasing leg weakness. Knees hurt, thighs hurt. They often cause me to stumble and fall, on the merest hint of uneven ground, more and more often. This of course means I have more risk of broken bones. The very thing that Fosamax is supposed to be preventing!! I develped neck problems, which caused severe dizzyness problems 2 or 3 years ago and I still get dizzy attacks from time to time and neck pain all the time. Recently (last 5 months) I have had an extensive rash that took two months to clear, extreme fatigue continuously, attacks of diarreha, inability to shake a urinary infection, flu like symptoms on and off for months, worstening of the leg pains to the point of feeling that at times my legs will give out at any time, and stiffness in walking. I also had an stomach ulcer last year, that was sur With Fosamax I had osteoporosis that went down to osteopenie level, but now it is back to borderline osteoporosis again. And I have still had at least one broken bone per year. F 56 6 years

1  osteoporosis I have been on Fosomax for about 5 months and am experiencing very sore teeth/gums day and night, blurry vision, migraines increased, fatigue and sometimes depression. I was in great health and retired 7 months ago and joined a gym.I should have investigated Fosamax before i took it, plus I had a feeling it was causing me to feel this way. I'm stoping this medication now and hope the longer I'm off it, I'll feel better. M 64 5 months

2  osteopenia Sensation of pill caught in my throat, heartburn. After 2 years of bone density scans that concerned my doc, she put me on Fosamax. I took the first dose, strictly according to instruction and had diarrea same day that I chalked up to something I ate. The next week I took a second dose and 6 weeks later I still have symptoms; the (very annoying) feeling of a pill caught in my throat, intermittent heartburn which I've never had before, some stomach upset after a spicy meal. All this after only 2 Fosamax! Saw my doc and she diagnosed esophogitis. I'm now off alcohol, spicy food, carbonated drinks - no fun! Both my internist and obg-gyn still want to put me on something for bones - maybe the nasal spray, but in the meantime I sure hope this throat thing clears up. The next step an endoscopy - aaaaahhhh. I've never had an GI symptoms before so I attribute all this to the Fosamax. F 52 2 days

1  Doctor prescribed I took 1 fosamax pill as directed; did not lay down, etc. The next morning I awoke to sever pain in my back and hips and could barely walk. Sever constipation also developed. The stomach pains; was presribed nexium - no help. My doctor said he thought I had an allergic reaction to the fosamax. I have not taken another pill and will not do so. I will seek alternative help if needed. I was feeling fine with no pain before taking the 1 pill. I am hoping it does no permanent damage. I have went on a low fat diet and exercise program (self) and will see how this works for me. Now I have pain in my neck and joints. None of this was present prior to taking fosamax. I would not recommend this pill for anyone. I have had to go to physical therapy for relief and am still disgusted at the effects of this when prior to taking Fosamax I had none of these issues.
