FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia tickle in throat after 15 mins of taking, started getting chest pains that would come and go without provocation, started getting muscle cramps in calfs, experienced tingling in hands, had gum/teeth problems-worse year of dental visits ever! Rheumatologist sent me to Primary Care when I complained about chest pains. After failing EKG, PCP sent me to cardiologist. Failed Stress EKG Test so had further tests and consult. Cardiologist concluded heart was strong and healthy and that it was muscular skeletal; sent me back to Rheumatologist who took me off Fosamax but would not admit it was causing all my problems yet all of the symptoms stopped after stopping Fosamax!  1  Osteopenia Inner knee joint pain - to the point where it became difficult to bend my knees. Drug made it impossible for me to do any significant cardio exercise, even yoga. Kind of counterintuitive I'd say, in terms of preventing osteoporosis. F 57 3 months

1  osteoporosis experienced burning in the balls of my feet[almost had nerves severed to relieve severe burning]-pain in upper back-headache for 6 months[kept going to chiropractor,no relief. Also bloating-acid reflux. My mother was also taking fosamax and spent 6 weekends in the ER with difficulty breathing and swelling of the tongue-although she takes no other meds Drs did not make the connection between the Fosamax and her symptoms. They put her through all kinds of tests-no answers. I discovered this website and we both discontinued the Fosamax-all our symptoms disappeared. now Drs want me to take once/yr infusion of Reclast-it really scares me! has anyone had any experience with this drug F 59 12 months

1  osteopenia - spine t-score -2.4 I took my first (and last) fosamax-70 pill this morning, and after two hours began experiencing strong flu-like symptoms: achyness and swelling around the eyes and throat and nose, headache, nosebleed, sore throat, and general weakness and lack of energy. I am so glad I found this website to learn about others' reactions to this drug. I hope my reactions pass. I have generally been a healthy person, though my mother had osteoporosis, and I wanted to try Fosamax in order to do everything possible to try to prevent osteoporosis. But after seeing the side effects and reading about other possible negative long-term effects (e.g. jaw), I have decided I'll just rely on good nutrition, supplements, and a lot more exercise to try to keep my bones dense but also flexible. I don't think the side effects of this medicine are worth it in my case. I've also learned through reading that bone density is not the same as fracture risk; other factors enter into fracture risk.  1  osteoporosis Took initial dose as prescribed. Bloating and nausea within a few hours. 12 hrs later severe flu-like symptoms (muscle aches, shivering, fever, bone ache, nausea) occured lasting 8 hrs. Second day: sternum, clavicle and sacrum aching, nauseous - couldn't eat all day. Third day: clavicle still aching. F 54 1 days

1  osteopenia I take no prescription drugs but due to bone scan, started taking this drug 9/06...in June of 07, started experiencing pain in left upper arm; also began to have problems in swallowing food so I stopped taking the drug in Sept. of 07...swallowing problems stopped. Pain in both upper arms increased and it is now constant... Could not figure out why pain in arms would not go away...did not make connection between fosamax and muscle pain until FDA said in Jan 08 that doctors may overlook link between these kinds of drugs and severe pain which could occur days, months OR years after starting therapy. Have been doing aerobics for 15 years...no longer can lift 5 lb. weights above my shoulders. F 65 12 months

1  osteopenia I didn't know any better UPDATE FROM 1YR AGO.1-12-07 (HOPE) CHECK THIS OUT I believe they are finally listening to us-http://www.fda.gov/cder/drug/InfoSheets/HCP/bisphosphonatesHCP.htm The FDA put out another ALERT yesterday, 1-7-08 My symptoms have improved over the year since stopping Fosamax. It's been slow going but I have HOPE. Hopefully, it didn't do pernament damage, who knows after being on it for sooo long. I do feel much better, overall. I probably will end up with osteoporosis though. My Mom of 81 has it(also on Fosamax)and her mother had it. I DO need to be better at weight exercise. But I will NEVER take this horrible stuff again. I'm working on getting my Mom of it. HOPE F 53 7 years

1  osteoporosis severe muscle, bone (even colloar bone!) and joint pain all over body. Could not get out of bed. Even in bed because of severe pain turning was excruciating. Had my doc give me norcotic pain killer. It has been a month since I took the last one but still walk like an old woman. Today US FDA said 'severe musculoskeletal pain with bisphosphonate osteopororsis drugs may be overlooked' according to briefing.com. I already report my trouble to FDA. F 50 2 weeks

1  Fosamax I started taking Fosamx 70 mg 20 months ago after I had a terrible reaction to BONIVA. I have to say I felt I was doing alright with taking it once a week - although on the day I would take it I would have bad stomach aches, sometimes with diareaha and just a bloated feeling all day long. In October of this past year 15 months after first taking FOSAMAX I thought I was having a heart attack and went to my local hospital where they monitored me and referrred me to a Cardiologist. I was given cardiograms/eco-cardiograms, a nuclear stress test and even an Angiogram only to find that I had a HEALTHY HEART and was discharged. A short time later pains I had in my legs/groin got progressively worse and my gynocologist recommened a sonogram and my family doctor followed up with a ct scan only to find that there was nothing wrong .... having these two medical incidents made me realize -- WHAT could be wrong?? and the only thing I could think of was reading up on the one medication I take re I think that more people have to get the word out that this medication is doing more harm than good to many people. Doctors have to know what it is doing to people and more important the FDA needs to monitor these medications because people are taking them thinking they are doing a good thing but in the long run they can be causing more harm. I am going to take my chances and take NOTHING before I put anymore of these meds into my body. F 58 20 months

2  osteopenia Extreme pain in my rib cage, pelvic joint pain, and now in my neck at the base of my skull I have a crackling noise and tinnuitis starting. After reading everything here I have stopped after 4 doses and hope that it wasn't enough to leave lasting affects. I plan to exercise and treat naturally -- I would encourage all of you to seek out natural therapy, I have found now (wish I had earlier) that there is much you can do. Good luck to all. F 51 4 weeks

1  osteoporosis After 6 mos.I loss 25% of body my weight and had sore spot in my stomach. Stopped taking it. Colonoscopy revealed inflamed area in colon. Resumed taking it. After 3 months back on it, I have pain in both hips and my right foot feels like I think a fallen arch might feel. Walking, sitting, and lying down is difficult. I'm not taking it! Why are the practicing physycians not monitoring these problems with this drug? Where is the FDA? We have to take responsibility for our health but we SHOULD be able to trust doctors and FDA.  1  osteopenia Back and Shoulder pain...heartburn, constipation... While I have had back pain, this is the first time I have had shoulder pain and heartburn. It has taken me 2 months to figure out why I feel like this....then I read this website and realized that the drug is to blame. I am stopping and contacting my doctor. My left shoulder and arm pain today is almost unbearable. If anyone experienced a side effect from stopping, please comment. F 61 12 weeks

1  OSTEOPENIA I took Fosamax for 20 weeks and I've been off of it for 30 weeks. Most of my symptoms have subsided, but some are growing worse. Has this happened to anyone else? My right thumb has been numb and stiff upon waking, and that has increased to both entire hands and it lingers throughout the day. Also my feet bottoms and toes are still achy in places. I don't know whether to be tested for something new--the hands--or if side effects can wax as well as wane after stopping the drug. F 57 20 weeks

1  osteoporosis Debillating knee joint pain, severe leg muscle pain and weakness After the 4th dose of Fosamax 70mg, I awoke and found that I couldn't stand up. My left knee was "locked up". The pain was so severe that I couldn't put any weight on it. Within two days, my right knee was also affected. I spent eight days where I had to rely on crutches. I stopped taking the medication a week ago. While the pain is somewhat better, I still "hobble" around and can only walk short distances. This medication should be banned!!! F 56 4 weeks

1  medium bone density loss I've been on 70 mg. for just about 3 years. There were no side effects that I was aware of until recently although I did have some bad burning of my stomache with no apparent reason. I just had my wisdom teeth extracted 11 weeks ago and had persistent pain on the side of my gum. The oral surgeon diagnosed it as osteonecrosis of the jaw. My jaw bone is exposed and they can't operate on it because I run the risk of having a large hole that will take a long time to heal. I'm now on 1000 mg of penicillin/day and a mouth rinse twice a day. The pain and discomfort will continue, possibly for months, until the area heals itself. I had no idea this could happen!I stopped taking it as soon as I found out that it's a side effect of Foxamax. I'm going with calcium pills. My second bone density test was normal so it must have helped but had I known about ONJ I might have chosen another route. F 59 3 years

1  osteoporosis extreme nausea and vomiting with dehydration and total loss of appetite, headaches, dizziness, blurred vision Had to make several visits to the optometrist, and 2 visits to the emergency room, where I was admitted to the hospital on one of those visits, before the cause of all the symptoms was discovered F 72 5 weeks

3  osteopenia back/osteoporosis in hip none Initially did not want to try because of comments here. However, I went ahead and have had no problems. My hope is that when I get another bone scan after two years it will have helped enough that I can discontinue the drug for awhile. Therefore the 3 rating -- don't know the results yet or it would be higher. F 57 9 months
