FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1   I have been on fosamax for 3 months, and noticed that my voice became hoarse, and I felt conjested most of the time. I saw a specialist who diagnosed me with GERD, but prilosec, which he prescribed, did not clear my symptoms. Later I started having chills on the weekends when I took my weekly dose, and also felt dizzy and tired. Last two weeks, I developed terrible heartburn, mettalic taste in my mouth, as well as severe lower back pain. I also was diagnosed with carpal boss, a bone spur on my wrist, which grew last month and may or may not be related to taking fosamax. I have not had any of these symptoms prior to taking fosomax, except for the back pain, which I last had a few years ago. I am 54 and used to be healthy. It took me three months to suspect fosamax as the cause of my ailments. My gp just took me off the drug, so we can see if the symptoms clear out. It is too bad, doctors were not suspecting anything and I had to figure it out myself. Obviously, there is not enough infor 54 3 years

5  osteoporosis I used the 5 rating so you all will see this. My first rating is buried somewhere - it was a 2. See an endocrinologist and have your parathyroid checked. Go to www.parathyroid.com. You will learn so much and posiblly find the cure, not a band aid for the problem of osteoporosis. I did. F 51 10 years

2  osteoporosis After taking Fosamas for close to 10 years, I am now wondering if the development of fibromyalgia and a pain in my hip that just won't go away were caused from this drug. The drug kept my osteoporosis in check but did not cure me. I discontinued use when I heard about the jaw bone issue and after taking care of the root problem which was my parathyroid. I began taking it for osteoporosis around the age of 40. Several years ago I had a parathyroidectomy - the root cause of the osteoporosis was parathyroid hyperplasia. Please check out www.parathyroid.com - it may be your problem as well. F 51 10 years

1  Osteopenia Constipation. Having always had achy joints/muscles, probably didn't relate this to the drug. Initially started drug about 3 yrs ago. Took for a few months and quit due to constipation issues. Next annual physical, doc says you really need to be on this, started again, but quit because same reason. Developed huskiness in my voice, cough at night when I'm on my back, etc. Dx with GERD. I've taken Prevacid 2x day for the past 18 months. Just had my second EGD because I'm scared I'll end up with esophageal ca. I'll get results next week. I convenced my GYN that I wanted to resolve my digestive issues before trying any other drug. These testimonials give me the ammunition to push my physicians for answers. What has to happen before we can be part of a class action lawsuit? F 50 8 months

1  Osteoporosis Bone pain, jaw pain, cramps in my feet and abdominal cramps, fatigue, knee pain I took Depo Provera for 5 years which caused the osteoporosis. My Dr. told me that I would have to take Fosamax for life. I took it for 15 months until I read about ONJ. I'm terrified. I've had 2 crowns and 1 root canal this year. I've been off of Fosamax now for 5 months... some symptoms still remain others have gone. I'm 27 and I feel 80. I used to be healthy, but the prescription drugs have poisoned my body. I hope I haven't done permanent damage to myself. I will never take another prescription drug again. F 27 15 months

1  osteopenia SEvere low back pain. Difficult to get out of a car, chair or bed. Tried physical therapy and acupuncture. Nothing helped. Took for 2 1/2 years. NEVER AGAIN From what I have read, this should be used for people with cancer in the bones, not mild osteopenia. F 59

1  Osteoporosis Began with Actonel. Felt poisoned. Doctor switched me to Fosamax. Still felt poisoned only started having acid reflux, difficulty swallowing. Stopped Fosamax. Doctor said try Boniva. Are you kidding? Did not tell him I had stopped Fosamax and never filled Boniva. Probably will not tell him I am not taking these meds as he intimidates me. Do not take this drug. Not proven safe. None proven safe. We are drug companies guinea pigs. F 59 12 months

1  Second try, after Actonel. I posted today, this is second posting 9/22/06. Will post again after doctor visit 9/25/06 when I drop bombshell that I will not take these drugs. As a postscript, I am not sure if I still am having side effects. I quit taking the drugs probably 6 months ago and still have occasional acid reflux and occasional flu like symptoms. I wonder if they will go away and if they are because the drugs are still in my system. F 59 12 months

1  osteopenia I took it for 4 years before I figured out it might be related to hair loss, shoulder pain, and tinnitis. I finally stopped taking it last year because I had esophageal reflux, which got better as soon as I stopped taking the drug. I believe there will be many law suits in the future relating fosamax to esophogeal cancer - I would never take it again, and I'm sorry I ever did. F 63 4 days

5  Signs of osteopenia None. Fosamax was prescribed because my bone density showed a weakness in one area and was considered osteopenic. My bone density has improved and shows all areas to be in the normal range now. My doctor recommended that I go off the drug for a year because of the possible side effects and then reevaluate a year from now. F 66 4 years

2  osteoporosis and osteopenia Taken Fosamax 70mg for about 1 1/2 years. For the last month and a half noticed I can not sleep on my right side. My jaw starts to ache to the point where I got headaches and also my whole left side was sore (felt as if it was inflamed). Also noticed extreme tiredness and exhausted feeling. About a month ago I felt pain on my right wrist. I am planning to see my doctor and want to quit this Fosamax. Am afraid of the jaw side effects. I do not know if my bone problem has improved as I am also taking a lot of other bone supplements (vitamins). F 56

5  Osteoporosis When I first started talking the pills I had Flu like symptoms and joint pain. I would take the pill on Sundays so that I had the whole day to relax at home to deal with the symptoms. After several months those symptoms went away. Now it have been three years and I am having stomach issues. I take Protonix 40mg to help deal with the upset stomachs. While this pill does have some bad side effects I would not stop taking it. When I was 19 years old the doctors found sever osteoporosis. My Bone density was at -2.51. For years my doctors tested me for every strange diease and tried several drugs to increase my bone density. Nothing worked. After just two year on Fosamax weekly my bones went from -2.51 to -1.9. I am due for another yearly bone density scan in a month and I can't wait. There is a good change that by now my osteoprosis is gone. The effects are worth being cured from osteoprosis. F 28 3 years

1  osteopenia Have been taking fosamax about 12 weeks and sought this site out because of my suspicions about this drug; surely my 56 year old body was not going downhill this fast on its own! I am almost unable to wear my contacts due to dry eyes. While I have gone through spells of not being able to go to sleep in the past, lately, it has been just about impossible to fall asleep until about an hour or more has passed--- man, I am tired of being tired! I woke up at 2:30 the other morning with terrible pain in my right thigh-- I have had sciatic problems in the past before fosamax, but this was totally different. I seem to keep a stiff, uncomfortable neck. Today, I tuned into some general stiffness and uncomfortableness in my legs when starting to walk after getting up and today, I found myself rubbing and massaging my hands and fingers because things just did not feel right. After reading this, I am going to STOP before something worse happens. I want my eyes back and my neck to feel normal and F 56 12 weeks

2  Osteoporosis Took weekly Fosamax for 3 years. During that time my T scores went down but my Endo said to keep taking it. Over the last 2 years I have experienced extreme neck and shoulder pain. In the morning it was so bad I'd almost be in tears. Then I researched the side effects and neck and shoulder pain was one of them. I discontinued the drug and 6 weeks later the pain is GONE. Since it wasn't helping anyway and making me miserable I have stopped the drug for good. I work in the medical field and most drugs have side effects with some worse than the condition they are supposed to help. I have never had a FX and have always had strong bones. I am now doing weight training, taking calcium, magnesium and vitamin D. M 61 3 days

1  Recommended by doctor Extreme hip and knee pain on right side; leg weakness; extreme stiffness after sitting or lying down; having trouble walking; fatigue; having trouble making it through the day at work; recently have a strep infection, but no sore throat. I have never felt so bad from something that was supposed to help me! Merck should do the responsible thing and take this drug off the market. I'm fed up with the drug companies trying to give us a pill for everything. I'm really glad I never took hormones! Wish the doctors would be more open-minded to their patients and stop believing all the propaganda the drug companies produce! F 60 3 months

1  Osteoporosis Severe bone pain in feet, hands, fingers, wrists, elbows, lower back, nausea, bad taste in mouth, creepy crawly feeling under the skin, overall exhaustion and some depression. I previously posted my problems as female, age 67, email: [email protected] I have been off this stuff since July 2nd, 2006 and have had no let up of symptoms. I know it takes a long time to subside, but is there anyone out there who is now symptom free and if so, how long did it take. I am beginning to get desparate, as I have been living with the pain for 6 months now. Thank you. F 67 6 months
