FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia none -- stopped after 3 doses due to risks. It is another lawsuit waiting to happen due to the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. After hearing 2 oral surgeons discussing the patients they are personally seeing with this irreversable condition, I researched it myself. There is no way I will risk ths condition. F 60 3 weeks

1  low bone density Horrible! - severe neck pain/headache, indigestion, severe leg aches/cramps(especially at night), insomnia, depression, persistent gastric "full" feeling, generalized body pain, stiffness, low energy/malaise Side effects started within a week of starting "the F word".I expected to have no S/E and hadn't even read any literature on the drug. Took me 4 weeks (of hell)before I realized that it was the Fosamax. Side effects resolved within 5-6 days off the drug. F 50 5 weeks

1  osteopenia Terrible jaw pain, TMJ, Osteoarthritis recently diagnosed, lower back and hip pain, neck pain, terrible stomach pain, rapid pulse (160 beats a minute at rest), chest pain My first issues were the tachicardia and stomach pain. Now, have ostseoarthritis in hand and lower back and neck pain. The new thing that's happened now is terrible pain in my jaw and headaches. My Dr. has now advised me to stop taking Fosamax immediatly due to some "scattered reports"of these side effects from Fosamax. F 42 6 days

3  Thin bones I have been taking Fosamax for only 2 months. Everything has gone fine except about a month after taking it, my hair stopped growing in. It isn't falling out, it just isn't growing back in places and I am getting bald spots. I have decided to stop the medicine for 3 months and see if it makes a difference. Has anyone else had this problem? F 58 2 days

5  Fibrous Dysplasia Occcasional heartburn and acid reflux - related to Fosamax?? This medication was the best thing that happened to me since I was diagnosed with this rare disease at age 18. The pain is GONE and I can have a normal active life. I have some of the problems mentioned in other posts, but don't we all? I can't really lay the blame on Fosamax. And I take 40 mg daily!! My insurance company has a fit but my doctor makes a personal appeal on my behalf. He is worried how long-term use at this high dosage may affect my liver. I go for annual check-ups and things are good after 7+ years at this dosage. F 42 7 years

1  Osteoperosis All I can say is that everyone out there needs to wake up and realize that Fosamax is deadly. I have witnessed two of my friends go from the picture of health to the picture of death after taking Fosamax. The side effects cannot be overlooked. If you want more information you can e-mail me. Fosamax is recommended for Osteoperosis, bone loss, etc. But what the drug company Merck does not tell you is that the side effects are severe, not only esophagus problems, but severe pain, neck problems, and many, many more problems. Please read this message board and get educated. It is your life! F 64

2  osteoporosis I have been feeling progressively more fatigued, with many muscle and joint pains, especially hip pain and stiffness. It had gotten so bad that I couldn't get out of a chair after sitting for 30 minutes without difficulty.I had a lot of muscle aches at especially at night.I also had mild nausea and eye dryness and irritation. It might have helped my osteoporosis, but my quality of life has deteriorated to the point that it is not worth staying on it. I am 55 years old and felt like I was 80! I have been off of Fosamax for 2 weeks and can already tell a big difference in how I feel. I am going to try to exercise more and increase my calcium intake and take my chances. These symptoms developed so gradually that I am sure many other people taking fosamax might have them too and just attribute them to just getting older. F 55 1 years

3  bone loss After taking the 70mg/wk tablet for 1 month I began having mild left hip pain. After 2 years on this drug I still have hip pain and developed severe bone and muscle pain in my lower left leg. Why even go to doctors! I have never hurt so much in all of my life. I used to be a young healthy male, but now I feel like a 100yr old grouch. This crap should be pulled from the shelf. Every doctor I've seen and mentioned that I am on fosomax just pooh-pooh's me off and says It ain't the drug. Well I think it is since all these symptoms started after I was prescribed Fosomax.  1  Osteoporosis Severe chest pain, muscle spasms, abdominal bloating and pain, flu-like symptoms. I took one dose of the weekly (70mg). Later that same day I had severe pain across my chest (like they describe a heart attack), muscle spasms in the back of my legs, arms ached. The next day the chest pain was gone but I had abdominal pain and bloating, diarreha and flu-like symptoms. These lessened as the week wore on. It took another week (without taking Fosamax) before I felt like myself again. My doctor does not want to me try that again. He has offered several other alternatives. I haven't made up my mind which way to go since that was such a bad experience. I had taken to daily (10 mg) dose several years ago and the only side effect I felt was mild muscle pain and stiffness. Also for some unknown reason my fingernails broke off to the cuticle. After stopping the medicine by fingernails became normal again. Has anyone had chest pain when taking this medicine? It seems to to attack all my muscles, including my heart. I haven't heard of this before. F 67 1 days

1  ostepenia first I had sciatica in muy left leg, then it moved into my hip and became trochanteric bursitis, which my dr gave me a cortisone shot for (didn't help) I also had tennis elbow at the same time and tinnitis, all on my left side. I've been on it for a year, and had these symptoms for 7 months. today i went to the dr and told her about this website, and she agreed i should go off the fosamax just to see if my symptoms dissapear. she seemed to think that it would take a couple of weeks for any residue to leave my body (but I wonder how long) I've been sleeping on my back with a pillow under my knees, because I cant sleep on either side, it's too painful and my legs go numb. I also had a thin pillow under my left arm that seemed to ease it a bit. sitting makes it much worse, have been putting icepacks on my hip and taking ibroprophin, and i read today in the pharmacist handout that iboprophin is not a good thing to take with fosamax. (it says additional monitoring of your dose or condition may be needed if you are taking nonsteroidal anti inflammatory medicines such as ibuprofen or naproxen. F 59 1 years

1  Osteoporosis Within 2 days of taking a once per week dose of 70 mg I experienced aches and pains in my bones, weakness and cramping in my arms and hands. My bones and joints feel like they are 30 years older! I will not continue using this drug, I will self-treat with vitamins, diet, exercise and natural progesterone cream (ProGest) which has been shown to build healthy bone. F 49 5 days

1  Osteoperosis Two friends took Fosamax. One friend was a runner, did weight lifting, ate properly, etc., the picture of health. She started taking Fosamax and got where she could not get out of bed, had muscle pain, and started deteriorating. It was Fosamax that did this to her. Finally, she got off of it, but the damage is irreversible. She is never pain free now. Before Fosamax she had no pain. My other friend Londa was taking Fosamax, developed acid reflux disease, esophagus problems, and could not move her neck. A physician told her to get off Fosamax which she did. She can move her neck and feels better. This drug is deadly. Please listen. 65 6 months

1  Osteoporosis After approximately 6 weeks on Fosamax I started to feel a stiffness when getting up from a sitting position. By the time I had been on it 3 1/2 months, I was so stiff I could hardly walk upon getting out of bed in the mornings, I tossed and turned all night. If I layed in one position too long my legs/sides would start to ache. If I sat for more than a few minutes my butt/legs/hips would ache and be so stiff and sore I could hardly get up from my chair. HUGE PAIN and I have NEVER had any muscle or joint/bone stiffness in my life prior to this. I am a secretary and this has posed a huge problem with my work. I have not taken any Fosamax now for approximately 5-6 weeks and I have had improvement but still suffer. I spoke to a pharmacist who told me it will likely stay in my system for a long time. I plan to see my doctor next week to let him know of the adverse reaction I have had. Also, on their website, Merck warns against taking the drug if you suffer any severe joint/bone pain. I will NEVER take another drug on my doctor's word alone, and will do my research! This has nearly crippled me. F 52 3 months

3  broke a femur by falling tested ok I went down your list and found one that matched my problem. I have been on 35 mgs fosamax for just over a year and have since developed a boney growth on my wrist (ganglia or bone spur). Checked with my doctor and she put me on meds for arthritis. I soon rejected the meds due to intestinal problems. That's ok now with an occasional motrin for pain, but the boney growth is ugly and painful. I think it is time to back away from fosamax for a few months and see what happens. I think this is a mixture of good and bad, and I am concerned about bone loss. However,I would like to know more about it's retention abilities after you stop taking it. F 61 1 years
