FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  pre osteopenia leg & toe cramps, back and hip pain, and sore throat my doctor doesn't think there is a conection between my symptoms and the fosamax because I have been taking it for 2 yrs. After reading this web site and speaking to my niece who is a pharacist I decided to stop taking this drug. F 52 2 years

1  osteopenia I started out with a slight cough after taking Fosamax for about a month. It continued to get worse. It felt as if I had a severe chest cold and was trying to get over it but couldn't cough anything up. I got very hoarse. It hurt worse to sit than to stand. I had a barium swallow xray which showed I had decreased mobility in my swallowing which I've never had a problem before. I didn't have acid reflux. My doctor finally gave me Protonix and told me to go off the Fosamax. After 1 1/2 months, I see slight improvement but it hasn't gone away yet. On certain days I cough a white phlegm which seems to temporarily make me feel better. I'm afraid it's done permanent damage to my esophagus and more. I think Fosamax might do some good things but it should be closely monitered. Actonel made me feel sick but didn't appear to do damage. Doctors don't seem to put two and two together until it's almost too late. I think before doctors precribe a medicine, they should be more knowledgable about the side effects rather than how much money they will make from the drug. F 52 6 months

1  slight bone loss bone aches, muscle aches, swollen painful hands and feet, can't totally close my fingers, had to stop wearing my rings, by evening my whole body aches, sitting and getting up is painful. feel 90 and am only 56. Thought I was just getting old and stiff, husband said it just didn't seem right the way I felt, encouraged me to do research, found this web site and was amazed that all had the same side effect that I had. What a relief, but now I am angry that no one warned me, especially the drug company. Don't take this and warn others! F 56 14 months

1  low bone density I began to feel heartburn. I felt nauseous, and I felt like my esophagus was burning. I was on for a year and a half. I went off and the heartburn continued so I had an upper GI done and sure enough, I have Barrett's esophagus and the opening to my stomach won't close. I am really upset, I am only 50 years old. I wouldn't reccommend this drug to anyone. Please read the book THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS. F 50 450 days

1  osteoporosis I had nausea, burning in my esophagus, leg and hip cramps. took fosomax for 1 and a half years. Went off on my own and the symptoms are still there. I had an upper GI done last week and sure enough, I have Barrett's esophagus, which is a thickening due to acid reflux. also my stomach opening will not close all the way, so that really hampers my diet and lifestyle as far as floor exercises. this drug should be banned, I am so upset as this condition could also lead to esophageal cancer, Also read the Book THE MYTH OF OSTEOPOROSIS, doctors cannot be trusted! After reading so many comments with the same symptoms, this is very upsetting, I am only 50 years old! F 50 450 days

1  Osteoperosis I have only been taking this for 4 weeks. I feel like I have mild flu all the time- aching. I also have very bad leg cramps for the day or two after taking the drug. I have become weak and have feet and ankle swelling. I have a call into the Dr re: what to do. There must be a med that doesn't have these side effects. Ugh! F 48 4 weeks

I often have bloated stomach, no matter what i eat . am taking calcium carbonate powder as well -daily except the day i take fosamax. often wonder if it all that calcium is really doing the job.  1  Osteoporosis Terrible stomach and bowel pain, contractions, and now constant nagging pain right through the colon, with milder contractions, for over one week. Noticable narrowing of the colon. I think this drug builds up calcium reserves, but not necessarily on the bone. In my case, possibly, it collected in my colon, with agonizing results. F 54 4 months

Currently, my left hip down tomyleg is practically immobilised I am positive that the doctors prescribing this drug have no idea as to the serious side effects.  4  osteoporosis of spine The only side effect I have is a change in taste. Since day one, my taste buds taste metallic! This is annoying but I can live with less good taste than to risk my health with not taking the drug. I witnessed a senior go downhill from osteoporosis and die from not taking medication and it scares me to know this. F 60 11 weeks

2  osteopenia The next day I could not move at all, my chest ribs all over my back hurt. My muscles felt like I had a charlie horse over my whole body.I could not get out of bed or flex a muscle. Could not go to the bath room in time. After two days of this I went to the emergency room. I was told to take a mustle relaxant, but it did not work. I was told to take Motrin, and it worked for a while. I had that pain for a week and a half. I did not know if it was the Fosamax, because I had been bending down for hours putting in flower in the garden. The Dr. told me to skip a week. I did that and the pain came back , but not as severe. My pain comes in all my joints and all over my back. I never had pain like that in my life, I could not talk because I was in so much pain. F 67 2 weeks

1  bone density There is a woman on this board with whom I exchanged emails who I am trying to contact again. I think her name is Judy. She was sending around a letter about complaints people have with Fosamax. I lost her email address and I couldn't access this letter. I want her to contact me again.  3  Osteopenia I can't say for sure that these side effects are related to Fosamax, but there seems to be a correlation. I get headaches on the day i take it lasting 24-36 hours. Nothing seems to stop the pain. I also have a lot of joint pain. Some days I feel like I'm 84 rather than 54. I saw my Mother and Aunt suffer from severe osteoporosis and I don't want that to happen to me, but I am concerned about what this drug is doing to me. I'd like to find a natural alternative.  1  osteoporosis Dr. Says my side effects are not related to the drug, but ?????????????????? I started taking Fosamax to counter the bone loss I'm experiencing. The first week I took it I was fine the first day but then for the next 4 days I experienced increasing stomach pain that subsided. I took it the second week and started again to experience stomach pain to the point where I admitted myself to the hospital at 10 pm 4 days later. I was diagonsed with irritable bowel and took steps to alleviate the problem. I stopped taking the Fosamax during that time even though the Dr. said it's not related. I've started taking Fosamex again and 4 days later I started exeriencing ringing in my ears, headache and dizzyness to the point where I vomited. Again the Dr. says it's not related. If you say so but I'm not so sure. This hasn't happened to me before. M 60 2 weeks

2  Osteogenesis Imperfecta Type 1 My 8 yr. old daughter takes Fosamax for 3 years. After 1 1/2 years we noticed a considerable amount of weight gain. During the last 2 months her hair is now falling out in the hairline area and some patches on the top center of her head. We are concerned as doctors continue to tell me that this is not a side effect. That it is something else. I really do not believe this. I would like for anyone reading the materials on this and if they have any side effects that are not listed on the F 8 3 years
