FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  osteopenia jaw stiffness, irregular heart beats, these are the things I noticed which did not exist before taking fosamax. I'm taking the 70mg plus D by weekly. Not sure it helped my bone density or not. F 51 9 months

1  A TD score of - 4.2 Indigestion, weight gain, breathlessness I was concerned about osteonecrosis but did not know about possible weight gain. There's no other change I've made this year which accounts for gaining 16 pounds and I now have chronic indigestion which I'd neve had before. Because I have a low TD score of - 4.2 following 11 years post hysterectomy without HRT, last year I was placed on both medications after breaking my leg. I've taken myself off Fosamax and will stay on HRT to protect the bone I do have. I'll have a scan shortly and I hope the year's intake of Fosamax has given me more bone. F 51 365 days

1  Osteopedia After 4 months on drug (35ml once a week) started to experience change in taste, certain foods where making me sick that never effected me before, tooth pain, flu like symptons that come and go. Fatique even after a good night sleep. I took myself off the drug a week ago, hoping to see improvement soon, I am starting to get back to the foods that made me sick before - still trying to stick to exercise routine even though it is tough to motivate myself though the fatique after being active all my life. Now looking into healthy alternatives to deal with building my bone mass back to normal. F 50 4 months

1  osteoporosis/osteopenia I'm a 78 yr. old woman with diagnosed osteoporosis/osteopenia. I was put on fosamax three yrs. ago and have had nothing but pain everywhere to the point of having to use a cane to walk. Could not put on shoes because of the swelling. Could not get out of bed half the time and the pain in back caused me to go to a pain clinic for epidurals. The shots didn't work after a short time so turned to accupuncture. Was OK but was told not to exercise. My friend showed me copies of your responses to this website and took the chance that my problems were related to fosamax. My doctor told me not to go off the fosamax. After only a few days I noticed a huge difference in my condition. Now after two months off fosamax I have returned to my old self. I do worry that the debilitating condition I've been subjected to will cause me further harm...back problems from walking funny due to pain, hip problems, knee, overall joint deformity. This is some bad stuff. I write this for my friend who does not have a computer but I showed her excerpts from this website and wanted to respond too. F 78 3 years

1  Dr prescribed fosamax I Was prescribed Fosamax by my Dr because my bone density test showed the start of bone thinning. I took ONE pill and followed the directions completely. Well I didn't get acid reflux, but I have never been so miserable accept when I had kidney stones. I got acid diarrea so bad that I actually bled from my bowels. My joints were aching terribly and I became violently sick to my stomach. I knew it had to be the fosamax. It hit me that my symptoms were exactly like that of someone who had food poison or had injested some toxic chemical. I'll never take another pill without checking it out on the net again. I'm convinced that FOSAMAX will probably kill more people than it will help, and that we will certainly hear a lot about the long term effects of this drug in the near future. I'm going to take my four left-over pills and use them to clean out my sink drains. F 64 1 days

1  Osteopenia After taking two doses of once a week Fosamax (70mg), I started having severe joint pain in my neck and shoulders, kness, thumbs, toes, and bottoms of my feet. I felt horrible! I felt much better before taking Fosamax which was the only drug I ever took. I will be taking a more natural approach in the future and told my doctor that I'm quitting Fosamax! I thought I was doing the right thing but when the symptoms appeared, I did some research and found out more about the drug. Get yourself educated about your health and listen to your body!  1  osteoporosis Took for 1 year. Initially no side effects. At about 6 months, sudden sharp pains in epigastric area but infrequent. At 9 months, almost constant dull epigastric pain and burning up the esophagus and into the throat. Also bilateral hip pain and stiffness esp. after sitting. I was only 46 when started and have been very athletic all my life. My mother has been on Fosamax now 10 years. She has had upper back pain, hip pain, insomnia, horrible esophageal reflux with frequent, prolonged laryngitis, and frequent flu-like symptoms. None of her doctors ever admitted that any of this was from the fosamax, nor did they tell her to stop. My grandmother also had osteoporosis but lived till age 90 with osteoporotic fractures only in her last years of life. LET'S WAKE UP SISTERS! Taking this is ridiculous! F 47 1 days

4  DEXA Scan -2.5 I had heartburn/reflux for a few years before starting Fosamax. I quit coffee all together for the GIRD. I was on 70mg Fosamax for a year and complained about 2 days of GIRD with every dose, despite changing my diet and a proton pump inhibitor (acid pump plugger)Now I'm on Actonel, 35mg. Same molecule, but 50% lower dose, Less GIRD. No new DEXA yet and its two years. I had to find a female GYN before I could get a DEXA scan. I challenged my doc about why take this heartburn provolker, then he showed me the graph about just what -2.5 means. I started periods when I was 10 and stopped when I was 45. The early start and early stop is a bone loss risk factor. F 50 2 years

3  OSTEPOROSIS I have felt the last year that I was aging with stiffness and pain in my knees, hips and ankles and bottoms of my feet. My mother who is 87 says she has no pain, and I can't understand what is wrong with me. I complained to my doctor about my knee aches and we did a MRI to see what was wrong, the result was slight detereration. Then I discovered this web-sit and see stiffness is a side affect, why didn't I check sooner. I stopped playing tennis most of the time, thinking maybe that was it. I had slight bone lose so stared Fosamax. I am calling my doctor tomorrow for another bone scan, and going to stop the drug and see if I feel, OH I WILL BE HAPPY. I don't take any other drugs. I now take 1200 mg of calicum and vitamin D, which I wasn't doing before which mayb be the cause of bone loss. I also am taking MSM for aches. If I feel better off the drug, I'll know it was FOSAMAX causing my sudden old age body, stiff getting out of my car and chairs. F 64 1 days

1  to improve bone density as prescrib Started with lower abdominal pain. Went on to nausea and muscle weakness. Transient flu like symptoms. Off and on for 2 weeks. Sometimes I feel normal and then it hits me again. Tingling sensation in forearms. Inability to focus. I only took one weekly dose of 35 mg, but the symptoms came on almost immediately. Does anyone know how long it takes for the drug to leave your system? F 60 1 weeks

2  osteoporosis I had taken two Boniva tablets prior to taking Fosamax. They really bothered me with severe pain like heart attack. Fosamax made my jaw feel like I couldn't close it and it was king of hanging loose. I've had a constant sore throat since taking it three months ago. I constantly have to clear my throat and it feels like something is pressing against my Adam's apple area. I had ultrasound scan for thyroid problem but there is no indication of that. Throat is still sore and I worry about esophogeal problems and I will go for endoscopy. I seem to be constantly clearing my throat. In my opinion it may be being prescribed to people with osteopenia and perhaps should not because that is an early sign that comes with most people who are aging. I have osteoporosis which has progressed as side effect from chemotherapy for breast cancer. I'm really not sure what to do next. F 65 1 days

3  osteopenia I have been taking Fosomax for over three years. I have experienced knee and hip pain as well as serious joint stiffness. I stopped taking it for two weeks, and the pain subsided somewhat. I resumed the 70 mg, anf lo, pain recurred. I am off of it. I have to take aspirin for the pain. It keeps me from sleeping at night, and I am so tired during the day. I am going to increase my calcium and Take more vit D. This isn't worth the pain, and I am only 65. I have read other comments, and it substantiates that Fosamax comes with risks. F 65 3 years

1  osteoporosis Moderate joint and muscle pain on getting up from couch;pain in calf muscles for several steps. Seemed to get worse when I had to begin Tamoxifen. Have changed to Boniva and joint and muscle pain has almost disappeared. Had no GI symptoms. No jaw bone destruction. I believe Boniva (once a month) is a better choice for osteoporosis and the monthly dose being spread out probably helps with GI symptoms. I would not recommend Fosamax as it has bad side effects and seems to react adversely with Tamoxifen in causing joint and muscle pain. F 68 7 years

1  osteopenia after two years on fosamax, and an increase in bone mass that was pleasing, i began having symptoms that i attributed to the development of perhaps rheumatoid arthritis or fibromyalgia. i'm a nurse of many years experience and am on several different medications and didn't connect the severe hip, foot, hand and muscle pain i have been having to fosamax until yesterday when i read jane brody's column in the new york times. she mentioned the (allegedly) low incidence of muscle and joint pain, which i had never heard of. but suddenly everything connected, and as i read through these comments i'm stunned to hear that so many people have been so adversely affected, as i have been. for the past few months i have been unable to climb stairs in the normal way--i have to take them one at a time due to weakness of my leg muscles and hip pain. i am fatigued and feel like i have the flu and the muscles on the side of my legs are very, very tender to the touch. i don't even want to talk about my no more fosamax for me. appointment with my gyn next week.  1  No, Actonel The morning following my first Actonel dose, I awoke with severe chest pain and difficulty in breathing. A trip to Patient First indicated the problem was not associated with any heart problem. Because the reaction was listed as a possible side effect of the medication, I will go another route - not Fosamax either. F 77 1 days

2  osteoporosis I took fosamax once a day for 3 years and had one experience with burning in my esophagus. My doctor said stop fosamax for a week and take mylanta. I started taking fosamax again and after 3 years I started taking it once a week and experienced bloating. After 10 months of taking fosamax once a week, I started having problems with acid reflux and then one doctor finally told me to stop taking fosamax. The acid reflux problem and the medications the doctors were giving me sent me in a tail spin of complications which took me over 2 years to get myself off all prescription medicine and to begin to feel like a normal person again. I had never had an acid reflux problem before and could eat whatever I wanted to eat. Now, I have to watch my diet. I also started having joint pain in my hips after I started taking fosamax. I can't say this pain was from the fosamax, but it has come and gone over the years. It would be severe pain that hit in the early morning before I got out of bed and then F 67 4 years

1  Osteopenia I had a BMD in early 2005 and had a T score in my spine of -1.8. I have taken Fosamax (35 mg) in 2005 for 11 months but the side effects especially an upset stomach caused me to stop. Since I had a recent ulcer, I was worried that continuing with Fosamax could bring back the ulcer. In May, 2006 doctor then prescribed Actonel which I stopped after one month because I was dizzy, nauseated and had a stomach ache. In October I had a BMD and the T score in my spine is now -2.3. In October, 2006 doctor persuaded me to take Fosamax 70 mg. In the past month I have had the worse side effects yet i.e. every part of my body hurts, my legs hurt, tingling sensation in legs, joint and knee pain, back pain is worse and pain in my leg when I am trying to sleep. Doctor has taken me off Fosamax and told me to continue taking Calcium and Vitamin D and thats it. I am only 53, have a T score of -2.3 in my spine and have two significant risk factors i.e. my mom has osteoporosis and my weight is 110 lbs. I have osteoarthritis in my collar bone, neck and back and am unable to do weight bearing/lifting exercises other than walking and running. For those that have gone off Fosamax, what credible alternatives are there out there that increase bone density. F 53 12 months
