FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

2  Osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax for over 10 years. Everything was going fine until last Nov 5 2006 when I fell trying to roller skate and fractured my tibia and fibula and all the tendons in my right ankle. When my surgeon opened me up the bones completed shattered "like glass". My surgeon told me that this condition was probably brought on by the Fosamax. Today is Feb 19 2007 and I finally had the last of my stitches removed post op from the hardware removal. The 5 inch plate was left attached because of the severity of the fracure. I am 60 years old, healthy and energetic. I have been on Fosamax for so many years I'm not sure what I should think about what effect it had on my ankle bones. I understand the half-life of Fosamax is ~~ 8 years. So even if I changed to another medication the damage from Fosamax has already been done. F 60 10 years

1  Low Bone Density After taking Fosamax 70mg for about six months, I started experiencing severe sciatia. I asked my doctor if he thought it could be due to Fosamax, he said "oh, no, it wouldn't do that." Well, none of the routine treatments for sciatia have worked on me so, after reading the other comments at this website, I'm thinking it's time to stop doing Fosamax. Thanks to all of you. I appreciate the opportunity to hear others' experiences with this drug -- I'm now really convinced that Fosamax needs to be reevaluated by FDA. F 71 9 days

1  Ostiopenia Severe vertigo, floaters, flu-like symptoms, tinnitus accompanied by sudden hearing loss, flu-like symptoms, bone spur or ganglia on wrist, arms, shoulders and legs very painful and severe cramps. I was taking Fosamax with Arimidex for Stage I breast cancer. Many of the side effects of these two drugs are the same so I thought there might have been synergistic (additive) effects of the two drugs. I am very sorry I took the two drugs mentioned. My oncologist switched me back to Tamoxifen although this drug has many bad side effects also. F 67 2 years

1  Bone Density After 3-months on Fosamax,I experienced severe leg pain. I stopped taking Fosamax and 2-weeks later was pain free. The PA and the MD claimed I was the first patient who experienced leg pain from Fosamax! However, the MD listed "allergic to Fosamax" on a pre-surgery report to my surgeon. I spent two decades as an RN in an allergy clinic and never heard of leg muscle pain diagnosed as an allergic reaction. F 66 3 months

1  osteoprosis Stomach ulcers that eroded and caused severe bleeding from an artery close to stomach. Also severe swelling in both legs whic turned bright red and developed massive blisters that burst and drained for two weeks. I would never take this drug that almost killed me again. Very dangerous. I ended up in the intensive care unit at hospital from severe bleeding from stomach ulcers that eroded close to an artery. Blood prssure dropped so low that I flat-lined. Had to be given 6 pints of blood. Legs are still very painful from the huge blisters that they had on them. Unable even to stand up at the time and am still in the hospital and don't know for how long. This medicine is very dangerous and almost killed me.... F 69

1   I stumbled across this website and was reading the comments on Fosamax. I am writing to let everyone know of an article Ingerman & Horwitz, LLP wrote about Fosamax and its link to jaw decay.

1  Osteoporosis Severe bone pain, nausea, headaches, exhaustion This is an update to 2 earlier postings. It has been over 6 months since I quit taking Fosamax and I still suffer the effects, just to a lesser degree. I have an ocassional good day, but they are few and far between. If anyone can let me know if you are symptom free and how long it took you to get there, please write. I get very despondent sometimes, because it is taking so long to recover. I was on it for 6 months, off for almost 7. Thank you. F 67 6 months

2  osteopenia At this time I can't put a rating on Fosamax.(well, I can't submit my comment w/o a rating, so my rating at this time is a false one [I think!]. I went to the dentist the other day, on my way home it was like a light bulb went on or should I say, 'a spot light'! Having some problems with calcium build up in my gums. They protrude out the sides of the gums (inner & outer), & get quite sore (ugly looking, too.) They have a name, but not sure of it. Anyway, on the ride home I thought of Fosamax & wondered if maybe there was a connection, so I researched the drug. Wow!! Do I feel stupid. I didn't come across any info about my gum issue, but was in tears reading about others taking this drug. I've have increasing pain, stiffness, joint issues, bottom of feet pain, ringing in ears, positional virtigo, tiredness, just down right feeling like my body is failing me. I blam it all on menopause. Doc says arthritis. (I think that's just the Doc's opinion). Never considered the d Checked w/my Doc., says it's ok to not use Fosamax & keep track of things. Bone scan to follow in a few months. I will continue w/calcium citrate & add stretching w/ lite weights. Interesting site on the subject is womentowomen.com HOPE F 52 6 years

1  Osteoporosis After several years on Fosamax I started to experience extensive throat spasms, where I couldn't swallow and felt that I couldn't catch my breath. This problem would pass after a few minutes however was very frightening. On the advice of my doctor, I discontinued taking the Fosamax and the symptoms have cleared. However, now for the first time I have slight problem with acid reflux. F 59 5 years

1  osteopenia Flu like symptoms - shivering, weakness, dizziness, bone and muscle pain, and no energy on the day after dose was taken (couldn't do anything but lie around). Was prescribed 70 mg once a week, and took for three months. I felt like I was being poisoned, had less and less energy and more and more joint and muscle pain. It got harder to function in everyday tasks because of lack of energy and pain. Finally stopped taking this medication, and after two weeks, am finally feeling almost back to normal, but still have leg pains during the night while trying to sleep. Will tell my physician that I cannot continue with this and will try to increase my physical activity and calcium intake, and hope for the best. Possible side effects should be better explained by your doctor! This was not good for me, and might not be good for you. Beware! F 65 3 months

1  osteoporosis Taking it since April 2006. Gradually joints and muscles ache to the extent that I can just about function. This from a regular gym user who was very fit. I believe it is a dangerous drug and that because many people dont get immediate symptoms they do not make the association and believe that because of their age it must be arthritis. My advise is pay more heed to the side effects mentioned. F 58 9 months

2  osteopenia I have been taking Fosamax 70ml once week for 6 weeks and I've suddenly developed TMJ. I did some research and found that TMJ is now recognized as a side effect of Fosamax. I would go to and read about Fosamax. This is a very informative site. F 59 6 weeks

1  osteoporis After waiting for 2 yrs for another density scan there was no statistically significant improvement, even loss some bone mass on one side gained very little on the other. This drug did not prove to be doing its job for me. I called Coctor and told her I want off it. She said ok. Now I am supplementing with Calcium Carbonate/D. I never had osteoporosis pain to begin with, found out through Bone Density Scan. F 63 3 years

1  Osteoporosis I have been taking Fosamax for 3 yrs 70mg. I have read material about Fosamax and ONJ. Now I afraid to take it that it may cause problems down the road. I don't think enough research goes into medications before they are marketed. Helps one thing, and kills another. More cases are of dental procedure problems being reported due to the use of Fosamax and the like. Who knows as time goes on there may be many more side affects. F 63 3 years

4  osteoporosis Bloating, constipation, pelvic pain after bowel movement, mild short term memory loss, increased muscle stiffness. (I have fibromyalgia). Fosamax increased my bladder's sensitivity to diet ( I have interstitial cystitis which I control with diet, a heparinoid (Elmiron), and Tofranil (a tricyclic antidepressant). Fosamax caused colon cramping, gas, and pain every day for 2 yrs I've taken it. However, it did improve my bone density in femur about 2% and hip 33% in that time period (lumbar vert. L4 and L5 showed no improvement). Finally, at long last, I've found what ameliorates or eliminates the side effects: 1) Levsin, extended release. Take 1/2 dose in morn when I get up, half dose later in day. (Enablex works too). 2) Another approach is even better and enables me to avoid the Levsin too, on most days. I avoid eating anything with wheat. (Now this is strange considering I've been allergy tested and have no wheat allergy, nor do I have celiac disease or a gluten intolerance. I also never had any intestinal or other problems with wheat before I took the Fosamax.) Avoiding wheat is hard to do in America. So, I tried quitting the Fosamax and waiting to see how long it was before the daily pelvic pain was completely gone. It took 5 weeks off the drug for the pelvic symptoms to subside.
