FOSAMAX  (ALENDRONATE SODIUM):  Alendronate is used to prevent and treat certain types of bone loss (osteoporosis) in adults. Osteoporosis causes bones to become thinner and break more easily. Your chance of developing osteoporosis increases as you age, after menopause, or if you are taking corticosteroid medications (such as prednisone) for a long time. This medication works by slowing bone loss. This effect helps maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Alendronate belongs to a class of drugs called bisphosphonates.   FDA Approval Date: 2000-10-20 (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  osteopenia Steadily increasing pain from my waist down: lower back, hips, and all of my legs and feet. My skin hurt, my muscles hurt, and my bones hurt. Had to sleep with a pillow between my knees and I couldn't stand for them to touch each other. I used to walk about 2 or 3 miles every other day, and I could barely walk around the block every few days. Going up and down stairs was almost impossible. I have 2 parrots, and I line their cages with newspaper, or I probably wouldn't have seen an article in my local newspaper about the bad side effects of Fosamax. I hadn't read the paper that day. I had been taking Fosamax for a year, and I can't believe that I NEVER ASSOCIATED the problems I had with Fosamax. I started taking Fosamax right after my 60th birthday, and somehow associated the increase in aches and pains to my age. My family doctor, who prescribed Fosamax said it couldn't possibly be the medicine, and she sent me to an orthopedic, who gave me Kenalog shots in my knees and prescribed physical therapy. Neither of which helped. My doctor suggested glucosamine and MSM, and also gave me a prescription for prednisone, which I threw up right after taking. Bottom line: after reading the article, I skipped the next dose of Fosamax, which was supposed to be taken the next morning. It has been ONE WEEK, and already I feel at least 90% better. Knees are slightly achey, and F 61 13 months

1  osteopenia Within twelve hours of taking the 70mg. once weekly tablet I began to experience general aches and pains. Within twenty four hours I experienced severe bone, muscle and skin pain. I had a hard time sleeping and was tired. Not sure if it was Fosamax I waited one and a half months and took another 70mg. tablet this past Wednesday. It is definately the Fosamax. The pain is worse this time around.I am also experiencing pain for hours on my skin if pessure is applied on my body.. I will take my chances with fractures before I take another tablet of Fosamax.  1  Osteoporosis Headaches, Stiff neck, Burning & Blurring eyes, Left jaw pain, Bloating, Unexplained Gas, Painful & Swollen Thumb joints, Fatigue Having gone to the Dr. with my husband regading his blurred vision I was made aware of the side effects of Fosamax. My husband had been & had all the necessary eye checks but was told his sight vision had not changed. Then to our Dr.& after consutation was told to stop taking Fosamax for a month. I then found your website for which I am very grateful. I have been on Fosamax for 3yrs now & slowly my health seems to be deteriating. Having had all checks possible I am told I am fit and healthy person & I have always felt & looked much younger than my age. I then started putting my symptoms down to my age. At present I sometimes feel at least 10 yrs older than I am which in turn starts to get a person down. These symptoms all came on slowly so was harder to detect. My Optometrist has now told me I have premature ageing in one of my eyes. I have worn glasses for about 15yrs for reading but only needig them adjusted about every 5 yrs. 2 1/2 yrs ago there was no change, th F 74 3 years

1  osteoporosis I have been on this medication for just nine weeks and didn't realize that all these side effects were all connected. I just never thought that they were from the fosamax. I have severe pain on the bottom on my feet when getting out of bed in the morning, eye twitching and tremors, dry eyes, runny nose, toe joint pain and wrist pain. This medication has many side effects. I did not realize that all these strange new changes were from the medication, I just thought it was just part of being 52. I am very active and never had these problems. These side effects happened over a few weeks and I just didn't put it together. I am stopping this medication today. I am so happy I found this sight. My doctor should have spoken to me about the possible side effects and I should have done my homework. F 52 12 weeks

2  Osteopenia Within 24 hours of taking Fosamax, I experienced sternum pain and low back pain. Typically subsided within 48 hours I was originally prescribed Boniva. I took one dose and had horrible side effects (severe sternum pain [thought I was having heart trouble], diarrhea, low back pain, upper pain pain). My doctor discontinued Boniva and started me on Fosamx. My side effects are much more tolerable, but I still have sternum pain, foot cramps and back pain. I am most concerned that if I have any negative symptoms, this stuff stays in your system for over 10 years (if I am understanding correctly). I don't believe that these medications were intended for us to take over decades. Therefore, I discontinued this medication and am doing research. I don't know which direction to go. I have had 4 DexaScans over 6 years, with each one showing more osteopenia. I exercise, eat the right foods etc. However, my doctor wants to me be proactive and that is why he started me on the biophosphonates. Should I try Actenol?? How long does that stay in your system if you have adverse side effects? Any suggestions/ F 45 7 weeks

1  Bone density test Symptoms are bluring eyes, tiredness, not sleeping, terrible fatigue, hip pain, severe bone and muscle pain even in my back and rib cage. Did not have any before taking Fosamax. I am very active but after taking Fosamax I feel like I am 100 years old and can no longer do any of the exercises that I did on a daily basic before Fosamax. Every bone and muscle in my body hurts all the time and fatigue all day the day that I take the pill. I thought that this drug was suppose to help me and all it has done is make me feel bad. So I think I will take my chances and stop taking. I hope I will feel better soon. If anyone can help please e-mail me back. F 54 1 months

1  Insisted on by my doctor Varying degrees of pain in the esophyagus; hard to swallow. Bone exposure in lower right jaw which took three months to heal over. Continue to have gnawing pain in the lower jaw and general feeling of dissipation. Should never have taken it. Stopped taking it in Jan 2007. No improvement in hip or spine. Doctors prescibing it are negligent (or motivated by drug companies) and it is criminal to continue to the use of it. Are there any studies being done on followups? F 71 6 years

1  osteoporosis After only 2 doses, I suffered severe muscle and joint pain in hands, arms, legs and ankles on the day that I take the medication and for several days after. Thumb joints are so swollen that I have not been able to use my hands for anything that involves thumb use. Exercise is supposed to help osteoporosis, but after taking fosamax, I hurt so bad that exercise is out of the question. Nothing this bad can be good for you! With all of the pain I am going through, I decided to check out side effects on the internet - and I see I am not the only one. Will not be taking this awful stuff any more. F 60 2 weeks

1  osteopenia Joint pain and constant heartburn- two conditions that I hadn't experienced prior to taking Fosamax. My doctor wanted me to take other medications to treat those symptoms. Instead I stopped taking the Fosamax. I'm starting to feel a lot better. The heartburn is completely gone. Anyone experiencing adverse reactions to Fosamax should contact the doctor so that doctors become aware of the prevalence of these complaints. F 60 10 months

1  dx. with osteopenia Swelling and pain in joints. Particularly hands, wrist, fingers, and toe. Heart burn and indigestion for first day or two after taking each week. Had none of these symptons prior to taking foxamax. Took it for a little over 2 years and had repeat bone scan which showed only a "slight" improvement. Therefore, decided it wasn't worth the aches and pains for only a "slight" improvement. I decided to just keep taking my calcium 1200 W/ Vit. D, which I have been doing for years, and joined a fitness club and have been exercising regularly 4 - 5 times per week. F 53 2 years

1  bone loss After being on it over a month, my teeth started bothering me. I quit taking it after two and a half months. My teeth got to hurting me worse. Two months later, I could hardly eat my teeth hurt so bad. Eight months after being off of it, my teeth and gums still hurt some. My dentist said that I didn't show any loss of bone. Taking bone meal with vitamin D has helped me a lot. I am also going to take strontium and magnesium. I haven't had this problem before so Fosamax is the only thing that I feel could have done it. She had given me Celebrex and Elavil too. I don't think they hurt me but I quit taking them too. I would give anything if I had not taken it. I am scared that I will keep having problems with my teeth hurting. I have got to have a root canal done and am afraid to have it. From reading some of these letters, I am afraid to have it pulled.  5  osteopoena None. Because my mother's spine had literally crumbled in her late eighties my doctor sent me to a university program where the treating physician did nothing but treat and research bone loss. My initial DEXA T-score was -2.5 after 2 years and 3 measurements on the same machine, by the same technician, read by the same doctor, my T-score was -0.4, a staggering improvement. If you are lucky enough to have no side effects this is an effective drug. If you can't take it and have osteoporosis I urge you to seek another solution. My mother suffered excruciating pain, she was on morphine for 8 years and this was her only relief. M 70 6 years

1  osteoporosis Nausea, elbow pain, swollen and painful finger joints, foot cramps, fatigue, generally feel awful. I was afraid to take Actonel, so did not get the prescription filled for 4 months. I joined a gym, and did weight lifting machines. I felt great. Then I decided I had better try the medication, because of my bad bone scan. Two weeks later, I developed elbow pain, became extremely fatigued, and was no longer able to lift weights. I looked for side effects in the literature, but fatigue was not on the list. I did not associate these symptoms with Actonel, just thought I was just getting old(er). I found this posting, and will quit taking it immediately. This poison is the only prescription medicine I have ever taken routinely. F 70 3 days

2   Wondered why I developed TMJ, had no idea, dentist and doctor did not even suggest Fossamax was a culprit. After reading all these comments, I am going to cease this treatment and look for other options. I can hardly chew, can't open up my mouth, sometimes can't bring teeth together, have to puree my food. What do you think? Too many others with similar problems, might work for a few, not worth the risk, too many negatives. M 65 6 months
