HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Crohns Red, swollen injection site (size of a golf ball), migraine headache within 24 hours of injection then it goes away within a day after taking migraine medication and with sleeping (not good when you have a job and kids), dizziness/vision issues within a day and then go away, general fatigue and weight gain I started Humira after stopping Cimzia after 2 years because of a bad fungal infection. I switched doctors too because I felt my GI wasn't proactive and experienced with IBD. After taking a break for a few months, my new doctor prescribed Humira and it's worked well for me, keeping a fistula at bay and also no bowel issues other than gas. That's a huge improvement. No doubt better than anything I've ever taken. I did end up getting resection surgery last year for a stricture but that was a long time coming. Years of damage prior to effective medications we have today. So after 3 years the side effects of Humira are worrisome and have gotten worse over time. The migraine headache for instance is dreadful. I dread taking my medication. They didn't start until I was on the drug over a year so it concerns my doctor that it didn't happen right away like a side effect should. I think you can develop worsening side effects over time with biologics. Either way, it's never simple. Always reminded of the risks vs benefits. My observation is that even the best doctors are overwhelmed with so many patients. It's worrisome that complications from biologics can be life threatening. I have young children so I am busy and I tend to minimize my side effects which isn't ideal when taking a strong medication like Humira. I don't feel like I have any other options because of the severity of my IBD. F 45 3 years

4  Remicade did not work, 6mp did not When i give the injection I literally have to numb my leg where im doing it with ice I been doing it for 2 years now and it works way better than any medications ive taken and this works best but the liquid inside the needle itself burns when going in so I have to numb my leg and it helps for first 5 seconds which makes a hige difference, but it makes me like dizzy and feel like throwing up once its done for first 5 minutes it’s a pretty bad feelint but better than going in and out the hospital since I was 5 years old. I also had like 5 surgeries now I feel almost close enough to a normal person, one thing though, some times I miss like 2-3 days of an injection and then once I do the injection I go back to stomach pains and diahreah for a few days :/ F 17 2 weeks

5  AS, crohns, UC Red patch and injection site but that only happened a few times then stopped I was having one injection every other week, didn't take long for it to start working, it changed my life. I become normal again I could walk to the shop, get out of bed in the morning without bursting into tears, get dressed on my own without pain, go back to work, I am a chef so its not easy work. Been taking it 2yrs and its starting to stop working, I hope that others will benefit from Humira like I did but for alot longer. It really changed my life. F 27 2 years

5  Crohns No Side Effects! Just my wallet :) After years in and out of the hospital from age 13-26 I finally tried Humira after using Prednisone, 6MP, and Remicade injections - none of which worked except Humira. It is wildly expensive, but it is the only thing that makes me feel 100%. It's like I don't even have Crohn's anymore - truly incredible. I am scared of future complications but it is worth it to have a life and enjoy living without the terrible symptoms of Crohns. Put me in remission for 21 months of the 21 months on it so far...  4  Ulcerative Colitis Swollen ankles, pain in feet, especially when going from sitting to standing, facial breakouts, headache, fatigue. Went from bi-monthly injections to once a week to help keep me in remission. So far it has worked. The side effects are a pain (literally) but after having several flares with one being uncontrolled for 2 years it's nice to once again be able to feel like I belong in the human race. I'm still careful about food choices but have been slowly able to add foods back in that I haven't had in a while. F 41 8 months

1  Crohns At about 8 weeks taking it, I started to get little red dots look like pimples on my stomach and then it kind of spread All over. Called the doc, told me to take my next dose anyways and go see my dermatologist. Well a day after taking my dose, I developed a severe rash all over my fave and body. I am covered in a rash. It's so embarrassing. My dermatologist thinks it's most definitely from humira. And I called doc and said I will not take my next dose until you see me. My crohns has subsided but I can't keep taking this drug. Also I've felt depressed anxiety sad crying all of these things and anger. I'm angry all the time....this is not me. I have two kids 3 and 2 and I'm yelling at them all day...I hate who I've become F 27 8 weeks

1  UC First few months was only flu like symptoms after my shots; now however I have shooting like pain throughout my joints, headaches, nausea, vomiting, lack of labito, depression, forgetfulness, scab like sores on the back of my head simple cuts/scapes & burns take 2 to 3 WEEKS to heal.....and on and on My doctors don't seem to believe me, my husband hasn't a clue and I have a seven year old that pretty much can't touch me because I hurt all the time, I don't want to go any where because it is so physically exhausting. I have also put 20 lbs on. Is humira to blame? I went off of it for one month = joint pain eased, headaches eased, energy increased......but so did my UC symptoms..... back to the doctors to try and convince them humira is NOT working for this body.....please be careful and study before you accept this drug for treatment.....our bodies are different, what works for some can HURT others....be informed!!!!  1  Crohn disease Facial skin rash, hair thinning, severe joint pain. Very dissatisfied with this product. Have experienced 2 bowel resections prior to starting humira. Since starting the drug I've experience blood in stools ( never experienced this until taking the drug) also no improvement with bowel habits. Still having nocturnal bathroom runs. Can still have more than 8 BM's per day with chills and pain. Don't even want to talk about the moments of not making it to a bathroom. Those are just to embarrassing. Just so disappointment. Frustrated. Have repeatedly reported to my GI specialist the lack of improvement. Does anyone listen. F 59 2.5 years

4  PsA Using syringe; a lot of pain as medicine was injected, however the pain subsided minutes later. Little, to no side effects. Light headache day after 1st injection. I was diagnosed with PsA a few months after having my first baby. I'd been treating my arthritis pain with NSAIDS for 6 months. I then started Humira 3 days ago and am completely floored by how much better I am feeling in such little time. I'm able to move around like a normal person! I can flex my fingers and toes, walk without much pain, stand up from sitting quickly without much pain, etc. Basically, most of the normal functions of my day, I feel have improved over the weekend! I also have moderate plaque psoriasis and am hoping to clear some patches as my treatment goes on. I will post an update in a couple months... Thumbs up, so far! F 28 4 days

3  RA PsA None After a year and a half, I have reached a plateau and am currently awaiting insurance approval to switch to Enbrel. I leave out my pen for a good 45 minutes to warm to room temp while I soak in the tub. The mental torture of holding the pen and pressing the button is far worse than the sting of the needle/medication. I saw a dramatic difference within a few months upon beginning Humira, and given the turnaround in my quality of life, I kick myself for not trying it sooner. I was diagnosed at 26 years old, and could barely walk to the back of the store for a gallon of milk. I had to learn to brush my teeth with my non-dominant hand due to wrist pain. Fastening my bra was impossible. The list goes on. I was able to go on hikes and chase my young child through the zoo, and best of all reenter the work force and start college for a new career. Now, just a few months into the busiest part of my new life, Humira isn't working. I am allergic to methotrexate, so I have taken naproxen along side the Humira. I am on a prednisone taper until I am over this flare-up, and will be switching to Enbrel asap. The goal will be to take leflunomide with the enbrel but that causes all sorts of birth defects and since I am unsure about another child, I am stuck. I have to say, Humira was a great drug for me, and I feel that it may have continued to work had I been on the methotrexate also. My other complaint is that I saw ZERO improvement in my psoriasis. It literally did not change F 28 1 years
