HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Severe Psoriatic & Rhuem Arthritis Due to insurance issues (lack of) this is my second round of Humira. I am on it and Methotrexate after being on MTX alone. Side effects seem to be brain fog like that from Fibromyalgia. I have also had severe gasto issues from time to time even when taking Humira alone. When taking Humira it seems to make Psoriatic Blistering much worse for a few days after the injection. In time it will clear the blistering. I do not have issues with psoriatic plaques but assume it would benifit there as well. I take it weekly and this round I am at about week #5. I have found that the pre loaded dose pack burns very bad. When I change it to a 1cc sub q needle it is easier to inject but still burns as it is just part of the medication. When on it before it helped with mobility after 8 - 12 weeks. I believe it would have helped with pain beyond that had I not lost insurance. Feel free to email. I am 33 and retired because of this disease with nothing much to do anyway. M 6 weeks

2  Rheumatoid Arthritis None The shot is a real stinger. Even so, it would have been worth it had it worked, but Humira did nothing for me. F 38 6 months

3  Psoriatic Arthritis Side effects include: injection site bump, itching, redness, (last injection created a bruise on my stomache for a week). Mental confusion at times, most notably when typing or reading, mental accuity seems reduced. Cant seem to kick this chest cold either. After 8 weeks, Doc decided to try it weekly instead of every other week. Joint pain exists in ankle an knee, along with swelling and tenderness. This is the first drug ive ever tried for the PA. Seems to have improved, slowly, but some improvement seen. The Psoriatic Arthritis seems to come in waves, attacking every few days, then recedes, then im back to limping again. Very frustrating.  3  rheumatoid arthritis (13 years) drug site reaction (rash, itching), random aches in bones (not necessarily joints) all over my body, fluish symptoms after injection. After 5 weeks, I noticed some improvement in my joint pain. HOWEVER, I've been taking Humira for 6 weeks now, have had 3 colds, 1 sinus infection. On Enbrel, which I took for 20 months, I didn't have one cold or flu. Humira really seems to knock one's immunal defenses down. My doctor's considering putting me back on Enbrel. F 43 6 weeks

4  Arthritis Nasuea and Headache--Little tired the day following injection! After nine weeks, I am feeling better. The first few injections were really tough; however, it definitely gets easier! The side effects verses other TNF blockers seem mild. Give it a try! F 29

4  psoriatic arthritis No side effects other than mild injection site redness and itch. Dose escalated to weekly injections. Helps but still doesn't take all the pain away. Good control of skin lesions, arthritc pain better but not gone. I will continue as the benefit seems to get better the longer I take it. Been in the clinical trial for about a year now. F 51 1 years

2  rheumatoid arthritis 13 days after first and only injection, developed red rash all over, starting at the injection site. Will see my doctor to determine whether to continue injections.. I only had one injection, and I can't really tell if it helped or not. I was diagnosed 1 1/2 years ago and Plaquenil keeps me virtually pain-free. F 50

1  severe Rheumatoid arthritis Eleven [11] days after my first injection of humira I developed a huge swelling at the injection site, and a full body very itchy rash which took me to the ER, i had to take a lot od steroids for a long time [3 months], as well as Tagamet and Benedryl. It took two weeks for the rash to clear up but as the drug is long lasting in your system I was in steroids for 3 months. Not enough data, not enough testing and info. I subsequently developed diabetes from the steroids and NO ONE can tell me why the reaction began 11 days post injection. F 61 1 days

5  autoimmune reaction disorder I was on Enbrel, which does the same thing: suppresses immune system. In my case autoimmune overreacts to foods (gluten/casseinate mostly). It works very well. I don't hardly notice a reaction to foods. I'm not supposed to be eating those foods, & that's the bad part...I've been slipping & eating those foods again b/c I can get away with it without pain. Today, in the news there was a new study that says Humira causes 3 times cancer than placebo. Great. I'm not happy about being on the drug, but it does make it so I don't feel bad... and I was feeling bad even when my diet was clean. There's a new drug that is supposed to be on the way called Zonulin. Going thru another human trial now. Alba Pharmaceuticals in MD. Sposed to work differently for this sort of problem. Sposed to stop the gluten from getting thru spaces in mucosal intestinal wall. It sounds very promising!! Apparently, this is related to just about all auto immune issues. F 48 1 months
