HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

5  RA Injection site discomfort; increase in small infections (hang nails now get infected, inside my nose when I have allergy problems. Biggest issue I have noticed is that it takes a long time to heal any cut, infection, etc. I have been on Humira for over eight years. Joined a drug study three years before it was approved by FDA. My RA pain went away in less than 48 hours and has never returned. Joint swelling disappeared and damage came to a screaching halt. It has been amazing!! It took me three years to get the courage to self-inject - I had to have medical professional friends do the injection. Although the injection hurts to this day, I would not trade it for anything. It is a small price to pay for the relief I have received! F 49 8 years

3  Crohns Extreme tiredness, nausea, fungal infections, loss of appetite, headaches & muscle pain. Reaction to Infliximab led to me being given Humira - preferred the Infliximab, hardly any side effects. Bad seems to outweigh the good, can cope with the Crohns symptoms but not the added side effects making me feel a lot worse. After over 30 ops it was hoped this would be the one as i can't tolerate any of the other drugs anymore. F 37 4 months

3  Behcet's Disease This is my first day on Humira. I switched from Enbrel because within a span of 7 months, I had 3 major infections and every cut scrape or bruise would take 4 times as long to heal as what is normal and often leave scars. It reduced my ulcers by about 80%, but wasn't worth it. So my initial response to Humira, owwwww. The injection was worse than Enbrel and the site is still sore to the touch and tender all over the area. All of a sudden I have circulatory issues in my fingers, tingles and pins and needles, has anyone else had this? F 33 1 days

4  Crohn's I have been on Humira now for 3 years, i take the drug once a week and recently tried to skip a week and go once every two weeks, bad idea, after 12 days (waiting for a shot into second week) i had to leave work with a nasty, nasty headache, blurred vision and upset stomach. I went to the hospital and got a shot for the headache and was sent home to rest, thought it was fine after a couple hours and ended up coming back, so i have missed another days work and the research team are checking to see what they should do now. Have to go back to once a week as well. overall, this drug saved my life. With so many crohn's disease drugs, i've had to try them all and nearly died with Remicade shots, but got into a study group for Humira and after the initial shots i started to feel great and finally returned to work after a 18 month abscence. Then i had to conquer a narcotic drug addiction because of all those pills i took to get through my pain, Humira has helped me live a normal life, since the beginning week, i now have two children with my beautiful fiance and we are living great knowing that a shot once a week saved my life and we can live normally now.  4  Psoriatic Arthritis Major fatigue and a bit of depression the first two months. Also got a cold that wouldnt go away the first 3 months and then one after my sixth month. It was really hard to get over the cold but now Im much better. I still feel fatigue (I've been on HUmira 11 months now) The psoriasis cleared up almost 100% withing the first 3 months (i had severe leg, arm, forehead and hands psoriasis). I didnt take it for one month (missed two shots) when I got the second cold (month six) and the psoriasis began to come back...:( I don't ever want to stop taking it now because of that! As per the arthritis, I feel better temporarily but I start to feel discomfort in my joints around 2 days before I have to inject myself.....makes me feel bad, like a junkie :( F 26 11 months

5  RA slight pain during injection, but after reading others comments, will try leaving at room temperature for 20 mins prior to injecting.I am one of the lucky ones, no side effects. Have RA for 10 years. Suddenly 3.5 years ago, RA not able to respond to combination of drugs. 24/7 of pain and depression for 11 months until I commenced on Humira. Combined with methotrexate injection, I am pain free and not depressed. Glad to be off predisone and not looking like the 'Hulk'. F 52 2.3 years

5  Rheumatoid Arthritis I haven't had any side effects, except occasional itchiness at the injection site. That's rare, though. I have had RA for 24 years and been on many different drugs. I am on Methotrexate, Prednisone and Humira now. I was on Humira for about a year and a half. I quit taking it, due to a switch in insurance. Three months later, I experienced the worse flare I've had in over 15 years. After fighting with the insurance comapny, I am back on Humira and felt immediate relief after the first injection.  3  Moderate Chrons Disease I started using Humira after trying everything else out there. Remicade worked for a bit, but then I developed a reaction in dosage 4. Humira has literally eliminated most noticeable symptoms. However, I've gotten sinus infections every two weeks like clockwork. At the beginning of the year I had a cold for over 4 months. I've experienced injection site redness and sometimes bruising. After six months taking the drug I developed moderate joint pain - the Dr. told me it was another manifestation of the Chrons, and decided to increase the dosage to weekly. I've been on 4XMo for over 5 months. Some Joint pain has gotten better (and in between dosages as we get closer to the next one, it gets worse), but the joint pain has not totally subsided. In the morning I feel like a train wreck - specially my feet and ankles. The Dr. decided to experiment with adding Sulfasalazine for a month to see if it helped - it didn't. Took me off the Sulfasalazine and put me back on Flagyl for a mont Injecting at night usually helps. Applying cold pack after injection also helps. M 38 11 months

3  Chron's This is an update to my previous posting My doc has taken me off of the Humira. I've been sick almost daily since the last dosage experiencing flu, headache, chest pains, joint pains, fever and night sweats. It has really been had to deal with. It has actually worked better for the Chron's than anything I've taken I really hate that it's not going to work. F 36 1.5 months

4  Psoriatic Arthritis I started taking this drug 6 months ago for psariatic arthritis, I thought it was the mirricle drug. My psoriasis cleared up in about 6 weeks and my infamation went down considerably. I didn't know the side effects of this drug and at the time did not care because I am 29 years old and just wanted to look and feel my age. I suffered 2 strokes due to Humira. If you read the possible side effects it clearly states you can have all the symptoms of a stroke but does not clearly state it can cause a STROKE. I am 29 years old, I am now off of work and doing physical therapy to learn how to walk again, my 8 year old daughter doesn't understand why this happened to her mommy. Neither do I. Had I known this could have been a side effect I would have been more cautious. Now I am sicker than ever and my psoriasis is coming back. Read the fine print, know the possible side effects F 29 6 months

4  psoratic arthritis, crohn's possibly lowered B12, I have neuropathy which is worse, also ringing in my ears (started 2 mos after humira) but not sure if from humira. I also get a lg welt at site but goes away in 2 days. I had some blockage in my common bile duct also since starting this. I was on a high dose of prednisone, and entocort and after a few months starting this I am down to 5 mg. I tried remicade and had a reaction after 2nd and 3rd dose. I was having many joint problems and am now much improved. I also worry about any long term effects, since if I am even late a few days I can feel it. This is truly a miracle drug for those that need it. I also have been very healthy virus-wise since starting. F 60 8 months

5  CROHN'S This is a follow-up to my 10/27/07 and 02/25/08 postings. I have been using Humira for one year and currently have no significant side effects. I experience headaches and occasionally slight nausea immediately following injections, but taking the shot just before bedtime solves the problem. I’ve have zero Chron’s symptoms and have been free of Prednisone/Entocort since the initial 4-shot starter dose. I initially experienced minor hair loss 6-8 weeks after the 4-shot starter, but it was only noticeable to me; and it grew back. This is the first drug that has worked for me . . . I had catastrophic reactions to Sulfasalazine, Asacol, Dipentum and Imuran before finding Humira. M 49 12 months

3  Sever psoriasis/possible arthritis In first 2 doses full healing of symptoms but when skipped a week the psoriasis came back and spread over the palms of both of my hands keeping me from using my left hand completely. My doc placed me on cyclosporine diversified as well, I have been on cyclosporine diversified for 2 weeks with the Humira and it worked until my last humira shot. Rash is returning on hands and other spots and now have severe joint pain. Humira did seem to work weekly for me, doubt I could get insurance to cover me for more than the every other week shot. Know a person on weekly shots of humira and is successful with the clearing of psoraisis symptoms. F 33 3 months

4  Rheumatoid arthristis 14 months after humira injection (once every 2 weeks), I developed bad rash like chicken pox. I took steriod orally and put on skin steriod cream to clear the rash. Injection site swelling and redness usually disappear within one day. I worry that the rash may come back in the future. It took about six month before my rheumatoid arthritis symptom went away. I had polio when I was very young. Before taking humira, rheumatoid arthritis made it painful to walk but my muscle strength remained good. I have had humira for 21 months now. Although join pain is gone, I feel very weak in leg and arm muscle strength. I need a walking cane to move around which I did not use before humira. M 54 21 months

5  Psoriatic Arthritis Only horrible burning pain when injecting the pen. Soreness at site for about 15 minutes. I had severe PA and only Prednisone at 30 mg. helped. I was on 1800 mg. Ibuprofin, 1000mg Naproxen per day with little relief and only after 3 hours would it allow me to move my neck. I had 6 children I couldn't care for. A newborn baby I couldn't hold or carry. I then went to Methotrexate. That took 3 months to become effective but still pain and stiffness. Then my dr. ordered Humira pen for me. I woke up the next day completely pain free and have been 100% pain free every day for almost 2 years. I garden, take 1 mile walks and even jog sometimes. I can cook, clean, and take care of my family. I don't have good or bad days, they are all good. I was taking 2 shots/month with 4 shots of Meth/month. Now I am off of every drug and taking Humira once every 4 weeks. I may get a little tired a few days before the injection. I don't get sick very often though the whole family can come down with something for days and weeks. I hope to one day completely wean off of Humira, but for now, God has F 37 2 years
