HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

4  Crohn's Weight gain. Distended stomach. Uncontrollable itching at injection site for up to a week after with large, raised, red bump (itching so bad the skin breaks). Pain in joints. Feet HURT most in the morning and quite a bit during the day. I have to have Crocs on before I can walk to my bathroom in the morning. Scaly patches skin. Headaches. Constipation. Extreme fatigue for a day or so after the injection. Humira has pretty much eradicated my Crohn's, but now I have a bunch of other unpleasant side effects. The Crohn's was much worse though. The itching/rash has improved now that I take Benadryl and 650mg Tylenol about 1.5 hours before the injection and ice the injection area for 20 minutes prior. I still get it, but it's not as bad now.  5  spondylitis The injection really stings, and for the first six months I had a pretty large site reaction to the injection that lasted several days (the area would be hot, red, swollen). Now the reaction is much less as my body has gotten used to it. I also get sick (bronchitis, sinus infections) very frequently. Humira took a full 3 months of use for me before I got relief. Although, now, I feel incredible. I am running again, and experience no pain. I have needed to be hypervigilant about getting to the doctor as soon as I start to get sick because viruses just take right off into infections within a day or two. F 34 11 months

2  Inflammatory Arthritis My blood pressure is much higher than pre-Humira; I am short of breath and exhausted all day; I now have psoriasis in both ears; I feel some tingling in my face; my memory seems to be shorting out from time to time. Frequent headaches. I have yet to feel any significant improvement in my leg pain or shoulders and hands. My mood is pretty low. I have been on prednisone for a couple of years, and now with the addition of Humira, I feel pretty bad. I'm going to see my internist before I return to the rheumatologist to see if I can make some improvements to my condition. I'm really tired of all the meds. F 71 7 weeks

5  Crohn's Occasional sore throat and general feeling as if I'm starting to get a cold, but this usually only lasts a day or two and no cold develops. Bruise more easily. Some injection site pain after injection, but ice and Tylenol help and its nothing unbearable (completely worth it for results and not having to take tons of pills each day). Bloated feeling the day after injection. Amazing treatment! It took me a long time to get comfortable with the idea of taking a biologic, but the results have been amazing. I feel better than I have felt in over 10 years and my symptoms are finally under control (had NO relief/results with prednisone, Asacol, Pentasa...). I began to see/feel results within 5 days of the initial dose (4 injections) and have gotten increasingly better ever since. I am not 100% better after 5 months, but I would say 85%, which is amazing to me. I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel and have started to think that maybe I won't be sick forever. Benefits FAR outweigh any minor side effect annoyances I have had. Every time I go on a trip I am so amazed and grateful that I don't have to haul along an extra bag for all my meds! Its a serious drug, so do your own research before you decide to go on it, but my experience has been very positive. F 32 5 months

5  Plaque Psoriasis Absolutely None Ive had moderate to severe Plaque Psoriasis for just over 7 years now, after 4 years of different teatments including UV, Oral and topical, nothing was working, nothing would even put a dent in the plaques, finally my dermatologist suggested Humira, afer weighing the pro's and con's I decided to give it a try and boy am I glad, Humira has given me a new lease on life, I recently moved and needed a new prescription for it, afraid of the plaques returning, I was frantically trying to get in to see a new doctor for the prescription (like a crackhead looking for a fix) That is the only concern I have, is that when you stop taking the injections, the plaques return.. Have been plaque free for 3 years and it has indeed changed my life. no more long sleeve shirts and pants in summertime!! If you have any questions about this drug, feel free to email me, I will naswer anything I can.. M 30 3 years

3  Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus Injection site pain and bruising (lasts about a week), drug causes a lump under my skin that goes away quickly, sometimes I bleed (usually just a drop of blood), frequently aware of nasal draining (by smell, taste), sore throat when waking that goes away. I've always had a bad memory, but it is pretty terrible now (I believe due to pain meds, but I can't tell if Humira has made it worse or not) and I only mention it because so many others have on this website. I also am very tired all the time, but that's probably due to my severe sleep apnea and pain meds. I believe that Humira has worked for me, so far. Either that, or it is possible that my (severe) RA could be mostly in remission. Two months after starting Humira, I've had another issue with my ring finger where it locks in the position it was in when I went to sleep. In the beginning, it will open up during the day, but gets worse over 1-2 weeks until it doesn't release at all. I had to go to my doctor to get an injection in the joint to release it. This happens to both ring fingers and they alternate every few months. Before I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis and Lupus, I had really bad pain and stiffness in my fingers, wrists, ankles, and knees. I'd wear braces wherever I went and the pain was severe when I'd move the "wrong" way. That stopped almost completely a few months after taking Plaquenil & Meloxicam, but my damage hadn't slowed enough, so my doc stopped Meloxicam and started a replacement drug (either Etodolac or Venlafaxine) and then Humira a few months after that. Luckily, I qualify for the $5/mo program. SIDE EFFECTS NOTE: I have other conditions and take other drugs, so the nasal draining and sore throat could be caused by the other drugs or could have something to do with my lowered immune system (is it lowered in only 4 months of taking the drug?). I have severe central sleep apnea, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Degenerative Disc Disease, Stenosis (disc narrowing), Osteoarthritis, Bone Spurs, Herniated discs in my back and neck, and S F 31 4 months

5  Psoriatic Arthritis Injection itself extremely painful, and causes worse than usual sickness when alcohol is drunk. Lately experiencing mood swings although not 100% whether this is the humira or not. Otherwise the benefit greatly outweighs any side effects, I would definitely recommend it to those suffering from extremely bad arthritis. F 21 3 years

4  Ulcerative Colitis Very tired the day of the injection, slight headache for 1-2 days, some joint pain, weight gain My UC is under control, only had one minor flare up. Totally off Prednisone. I make sure I get rest the day of my injection and treat everything else symptomatically. Need to do something about the weight gain, that's a little worrisome. F 50 8 weeks

3  Crohn's Humira-induced psoriasis Humira controls my Crohn's 100%. I have had severe reactions to purinethol and 5-ASA, and Humira really changed my life. However, a month and a half into treatment, psoriasis appeared mostly in my hands, under my feet and on my scalp and eventually got pretty bad. I have loss a substential amount of hair, I have bald patches all over my scalp, not sure if it is from the psoriasis or Humira. As of this week, the doctor suggested spacing out the doses to once every three weeks. Hope it will allow psoriasis lesions to clear. I have topical corticosteroids and tar preparations to help with the psoriasis, but I am not impressed with their effectiveness. If anyone experienced something similar, please email me, I would be interested into reading about other options or on how to cope with all of this. F 32 4 months

5  Ulcerative colitis I had an infected mosquito bite. Turned into a real skin infection not really that bad but lasted 2 months. I am SUPER tired for 3-5 days after my injection. I have a life again. I can eat. I don't worry about what or where or if Im gonna have to have a BM. I cant even remember the last time I had pain. Which was a daily thing for years. I gained 35 lbs! I did remicade and had serum sickness. As I told my GI doc- yeah I only poop once a day- but I can't walk! Remicade didn't work nearly as well. So glad I got a reaction. I LOVE Humira. Hate to think that I will have to requalify every year (per my current insurance). Hate to think that I might flare again someday. This is the first respite I have had from my disease. F 44 3 months

5  plaque psoriasis Some hair loss, 15lbs. weight gain My head was covered in psoriasis. It covered approx. 30% of my body. It has cleared me 99%. I dont like to inject my legs as they are very sore for a couple of days and I walk alot. But for the most part.. I have done extremely well on this drug. Aside from the weight gain, I am very happy with my results. As another poster stated, not every drug is for everyone. It took me 4 years and many many many drugs to agree to inject myself. I am glad I made the decision to try it. F 42 2 years

4  plaque psoriasis injection site reaction, goes away within hours This medication has worked wonders and has eliminated my psoriasis completely. Though I did experience a brief outbreak of severe psoriasis while on medication, not sure quite why that happened. Humira says it could have been a bad batch (since it must be kept cold). This has improved my life 100% and I am no longer embarrassed about my skin!! When I go off it for as little as 2 weeks I notice some spots coming back. Otherwise no adverse side effects.  3  Crohn's Very tired all the time, achey all over, slight weight gain, irritable. Really have mixed feelings about this medication! My crohn's symptoms are totally under control for the first time in 3 yrs. I have had pretty bad reactions to other med, especially azathiaprin (that sent me into the hospital with pancreatitis). I feel better than I have in a long time....crohn's wise. The side effects are pretty exhausting, but I'm trying to wait it out! I have terrible leg, hip, hands and feet pain. The leg pain wakes me up at night and I can't seem to get relief. I don't know if the dosage can be cut down a bit or if there is a suggestion to counteract all this pain. I have a follow-up apt. with the doc in a week and will run it all by him. F 56

4  Crohn's Acne, weight gain (about 15 lbs in a month or so), arms and legs fall asleep easily, at first had swelling in my calves/ankles. I started Humira a few months ago bc Remicade stopped working. The Humira has controlled my Crohn's symptoms wonderfully, however it's brought on some side-effects that I didn't know about. I've never had an acne problem and now I consistently have 3+ pimples on my face at all times. I randomly gained 15 lbs very soon after starting Humira and my belly kind of sticks out more kind of like I'm slightly pregnant. Also, I've noticed that my arms and legs fall asleep and get tingly a lot easier now. And when I first started taking Humira, my lower legs felt swollen, but that went away after a week or so. So overall, I think Humira is good. Better than Prednisone that's for sure, but I wish the Remicade still worked - I never had any side effects with it... F 26 4 months

4  RA Burning when injecting med (however, I switched over to a pre-loaded SYRINGE and can now control the rate of the injection. It's MUCH better). I also get lots of sinus infections during the fall/winter because of the Humira and MTX surpressing my immune system. I did my injections at night and had no side effects other than the ones I've listed. I often felt relief the very next day and sometimes within and hour or 2 of injection. Humira has worked pretty darn well for me and my RA. I'd say I'm 75% better than I was before trying any treatment and I'm pretty happy with that. However, my doctor is switching me to Cimzia to see if we can get closer to 100% relief. If that doesn't work well, I'll be happy with the 75%. F 43 7 months

5  psoriatic arthritis Pain and swelling after injection. I have bruised badly in injection site. Painful to inject. Lower back tingles sometimes, not sure if it is related. No other issues. Before using Humira I could barely walk. I had poor quality of life for about four months due to the pain from arthritis in my left foot and neck. I developed psoriasis when I was nine on my scalp. When I was 22 I noticed my psoriasis was worsening, spreading to other areas, and I had foot and neck pain. The pain from the arthritis became so severe I don't know how I got out of bed everyday. I thought I was going to become disabled. It took 11 months to get diagnosed with PA. Since taking this medicine I do not have any symptoms of psoriasis or arthritis!!! No pain, no itchy scalp! The injections are difficult for me. I can not do it myself, I tried once and injected the air. It is painful for me as well. It is all very worth it for my results. I have had no illnesses. I did get a flu shot and swine flu shot, as it was recommended for people that take this med. This started to work the next day after taking! Within the first month I was 80% better...now at 100%.
