HUMIRA  (ADALIMUMAB):  Adalimumab is used to reduce pain and swelling due to certain types of arthritis (such as rheumatoid, psoriatic, juvenile idiopathic, ankylosing spondylitis). This medication is also used to treat certain skin disorders (such as plaque-type psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa). It works by blocking a protein (tumor necrosis factor or TNF) found in the body's immune system that causes joint swelling and damage in arthritis as well as red scaly patches in psoriasis. Adalimumab belongs to a class of drugs known as TNF blockers. By reducing joint swelling, this medication helps to reduce further joint damage and preserve joint function. Adalimumab is also used to treat certain bowel conditions (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis) and a certain eye disease (uveitis).    (Sources: U.S. Centers for Medicare Services, FDA)

1  Crohns/arthritis I have been having a lot of little infections. Then this past month I couldn't breathe and found out that I had several large masses in my lungs. I got a life threatening strep infection in the lungs. I then pushed the docs to look at my port and that had a staf infection. Both almost killed me. Watch the Humira commercials and really listen to the side effects. I had to be in the Hosptial for 2 months getting high powered antibiotics so we could stop the infections. If I didn't push the docs and nurses they were never going to test for the staf. I actually tested positive for the staf back in April of 2008 when I had to go to the ER with a 105 temp. Make sure you question your treatment and always review your medical records. According to several docs, this medicine is poison. I have decided not to take the medicine even though I have had 10 surgeries for the crohns and severe pain with the arthritis. Hopefully I can find other relief. It seems you can die faster from these terible infections more than from crohns. M 34 2 years

3  plaque psoriasis Had been on Raptiva for 2 yr.with some improvement.Started Humira 6 weeks ago and until last week would have given it a 5.Little red spots started appearing all over my arm. It almost looked like measles and has now spread to my other arm and my legs. However my scalp and fingers are in complete remission after the 1st 3 wk. Initially my legs improved as well but in the past couple of days are "plaquing" up again. Will see my doc on Monday and decide what to do. Hope this is a temporary side effect. Anyone with similar problem please advise. M 62 6 weeks

3  RA I was on Enbrel for several years and it lost its effectiveness. I have been on Humira for 1 month. It helped with stiffness and achiness within 48 hours but I have trouble sleeping. I have never had trouble with my right hip but now it aches all the way down my leg. this started when I took the Humira. I have had RA for 32 years and have been on many drugs. I also take Mobic and oral Methothrexate. I was on Enbrel and have had to be careful with infections. I hope that Humira is not going to increase the chance of infections. F 49 2 times

4  Crohn's Disease Fatigue, Elevated HR, dizziness, edema, flu-like symptoms, Pain at injection site if I inject the meds too quickly (does not hurt when you push it in slowly)... But my Crohn's symptoms are almost non-existent... could be other meds causing some symptoms (still under investigation) Humira has "cured" me of my Crohn's symptoms however I am unsure if it may be causing all of these side effects, will update when I find out. Overall I would recommend trying it if nothing else seems to be working... I've tried Entocort, Imuran, Pentasa, etc all before Humira and was on Prednisone for almost a year before being able to come off it (started Humira after 6 months of Prednisone without being able to completely come off them).  1  Severe Plaque Psoriasis I started taking Humira last year in February. At first it seemed terrific. It clear my Psoriasis better then anything and I've had it all. I've taken Methotrexate, Cyclosporin, Embrel just to name a few and have been in Univ. or Penns daycare program 4 hours daily for 3 weeks (tar, lights, anthralin, etc). After about 8-9 months of being on it I developed severe chest pains. I stopped the injections for fear it was damaging my heart. Had multiple tests nuclear stress, echo cardiogram, and even a cardiac catheterization. My arteries were clear but I feel like my whole pectoral area was reacting with inflammation to the Humira. It took 6 months to settle down. I went back on Enbrel which wasn't working and finally after discussing the whole chest pain issue with my Dr. she convinced me that the chest pain was not due to the Humira. I started using Humira again in the middle of this year and within 2 weeks my testicles hurt so bad I couldn't sleep on my side. I believe my immune system response to this drug is causing an inflammation in my pelvic area and suspect my bladder and urethra are ulcerated. Note: Although Humira cleared my yskin up quickly the 1st time I was on it the second time it was much less effective. My dermatologist states that they are now finding out that for some people who have interrupted treatment the drug seems less effective on future regimens. M 48 11 months

4  rheumatoid arthritis I am fairly new to Humira - I am getting ready to give myself my 6th pen, having started in September, 2008, using it every 2 weeks. It has helped tremendously with pain in my hands and joints, and I find my strength is back to levels I had prior to my first RA flare 8 1/2 years ago. I do have one disturbing thing happening which I believe to be a side effect. I have about a dozen red spots which have appeared on my legs. They range in size from 1/4" to 1/2", with the larger ones being somewhat flakey in the center. They do not itch. I appear to have more of them developing on the trunk of my body, but they are very light at this time. I hope that if some one has had this same side effect and found a way to stop it, you can let me know. I would hate to have to stop taking Humira, as I enjoy feeling pain free and "normal" again!  1  Severe UC/ Pancolitis Humira only seems to be working sporadically if at all- since starting Humira after some severe reactions to Remicade ( sever B/P spikes, tachycardia and difficulty breathing and severe hair loss) we started Humira. Immediately my 17 year old daughter started getting ill- high fevers, strep throat, mononucleosis, C. Difficle for 6 weeks, viral bronchitis, fevers greater than 101 for 4 weeks, resistant E.Coli in her bladder twice and severe HIP and joint pain- she can barely walk most days......as far as her UC symptoms- they are ususally 5-40 BM's a day never truly formed and very bloody sometimes. Her " doctor" at Vanderbilt( head of IBD) seems disinterested at best and is pushing for J pouch surgery. Whats the deal- does no one care about patients anymore? The more we call for help with her pain the more is is " away" from the office or BUSY. The more I push for someone to care about her pain and suffering the less they care.....and the more they push surgery....s I ALSO WANT YOU FOLKS TO KNOW THAT i AM THE MOM AND I AM A REGISTERED NURSE AND I KNOW HOW SERIOUS THESE HUMIRA REACTIONS ARE AND CAN BE ...BE CAREFUL......MY DAUGHTER NOW HAS " GROWTHS IN HER LUNGS" THAT THEY SAY MIGHT BE REALTED TO HER UC OR A FUNGAL INFECTION. SHE NEVER WAS SICK ON HER OTHER MEDICINES, EVEN THE REMICADE. WATCH YOUR BODY- WE EACH RESPOND DIFFERENTLY TO DRUGS....I HAVE PUSHED AND PUSHED TO GET GOOD CARE FOR MY CHILD- ITS THE BEST I CAN DO FOR HER...I AM HER ONLY DEFENSE IN A MEDICAL SYSTEM THAT IS FULL OR ERRORS AND PEOPLE WHO ARE HARDENED TO SUFFERING.  4  Crohn’s I have tolerated Humria quite well. I have been taking injections for the last 8 months (every 2 weeks). I did notice low energy and even slight depression the first month or two. I have also gained a significant amount of weight. I was under-weight due to a Crohn's flare-up last year, but am now 20 lbs over my normal weight. Overall, I am having good results wih Humira. I had success with Remicade over the years, but had a very bad reaction during a treatment earlier this year. My doctor suggested Humira as a safer alternative. I felt noticeably better after 3-4 weeks. With the exception of the weight gain, I am feeling great. M 38 8 months

4  crohn's Tired almost all the time. I find myself to be very moody for a few days after the shot. It is hard to focus and my mind is a little foggy. I have had weight gain but I think that is a good thing for someone with Crohns It has helped me quite well. The side effects are manageable as long as I have no flares I am happy M 34 9 months

3  crohn's I believe Humira has helped my crohn's symptoms after a bad flare in the summer of "08"; however since taking the shots for the past 4 mos. am having the following side effects: short term memory, hair loss, lack of concentration and foggy head. I have had chronic fatigue since "05" when my first flare occurred, but it has worsened since this last one. Would like to know if anyone else has had the short term memory problems? I have little choice for meds. currently due to bad side effects from other meds tried in the past 3 yrs., like the ease of having the shot bi-weekly, but am feeling that Humira may be causing my side effects since previous meds didn't give me the short term memory.  5  RA Bruising on injection site. Have little zit looking deals on my chest and back that won't go away...frustrating, but getting rid of the pain is worth having the zit looking deals. I need to get them checked out because they don't form white heads like normal zits, just raised bumps. Weird?? :-/ This drug has worked awesome so far. I am off predisone completely after being on the drug for a month and a half. I am taking a lot of vitamins and trying to eat well to keep up my immune system. Taking good multi-vitamin, probiotics, fish oil, and vitamin d drops. M 30 7 weeks

5  Chron's The only side effect I have is that I am always cold. The house can be 25 degrees and I am bundled up in a hoodie. I guess that it is better then sweating all the time though After delivering my second son my Chrons kicked in full time. I was scheduled for a colostomy but the surgeon sent me to a new doctor and she put me on Humira every two weeks and it has been working out perfectly. I can never thank the surgeon enough for going above and beyond to help me. That I thank him for, he gave me my life back with my husband and two boys. F 31 3 months

5  Psoriatic arthritis injection site reaction occasionally(raised welt-like)a day or two--no other side effects Wonderful for me - cleared up my plaque psoriasis for the first time since I was 20. So nice to get my scalp normal--knees elbows etc...but having normal nails again--wow! Unfortunately after 2 yrs I have to inject every 10 days now and I am getting flare-ups on the arthritis side of this but it still works just not as effective as before--they want to put me on methotrexate and humira--am afraid of the methotrexate though--we'll see if I pick it up from the pharmacy today F 42 2.5 years

3  RA After injection I experienced a pretty bad headache. The following day the headache was gone and so was all my engery. I am very fatigue and feel like my chest is heavy and my body is ache. I guess i could be experienceing the flu like symtoms that they describe. I understand that all medications have side effects and I have comitted to give myself another shot and see how my body responds before making and decisions to cont. with treatment. F 39 13 days

4  RA As others have mentioned, I also had fungus infection. (In my case it was ring worm). Doc said he'd never heard of Humira "causing" it before. Plus, had bladder infection, intestinal virus, and pink eye. All that and I've only been on Humira for about five months; very unusual for me to be so susceptable to annoying illnesses. Wish my rheumatologist also prescribed antibiotics, etc. for my side effects because I don't have a regular family doc, right now, and have to spend time fooling around trying to get the right treatment for these minor things while delaying my next Humira injection. Only thing I've tried that helps, and it helps a lot with pain and swelling, though not completely. At first scared of injections, but ultimately don't mind pen in abdomen. I ice the skin ahead of time in addition to taking pen out of frig in advance. The injection feels a lot like an ice cube on the abdomen: both sting but not too much. No injection site reactions, surpriseingly enough. F 55 5 months

3  psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis Increased fatigue and headaches after injection. Increased back pain and pain in fingers, as well as muscle aches. (No rashes, no nausea, nothing at injection sites.) It has significantly broken up the continents of my plaque psoriasis on both my lower legs and all but cleared up the psoriasis above my elbows and on my back and abdomen. I was not expecting it to clear up the plaques so quickly so I am pleased with that result. I am hoping the medicine will help the arthritis pains soon but so far they feel worse. I am hoping maybe it feels worse before it gets better. I have only been on Humira for about one month. It's the only thing that has worked on clearing up my legs so far--topical creams and steroids did nothing but make it itchy and red. I just hope the pains and aches dissipate. F 27 1 months
